Quality & Price not good! 10/17/2010

October 2 2010 My wife and I celebrated our wedding day. We looked so forward to eat at Strings after recommendations and after looking online at the menu it looked very nice. We arrive and I was reading the menu, but it is not the same as the one online:( I wanted to eat the Wild King Salmon Mushroom & Haricots Verts Succotash, Potatoes, Chervil, Corn Puree But it was not on the menu:( The waiter told me that I could get the salmon and choose vegetables since they just changed the menu. I asked what the word on the new salmon dish meant. And he told me it is a slow cooked long process with water and spinach. For starter I had the Ahi Tuna Tartare. Very Good but too much finger marks on the glass stone:( The King Salmon come and under it was suddenly a mashed potato square! Big surprise, since it did not tell me anything about mashed potatoes in the menu? And it was burned:( The haricots verts did not have the ends cutted off: ( This is basic cooking skills and for a kinda upscale restaurant should have cut the ends off! I even had to pay 10 dollars for the haricots verts! My daughters seafood dish did not came with chorizo as described in the meny. The dishes could be more nice with better representation. This evening was a disaster! more

WORST SERVICE EVER 4/13/2010

Saturday March 6th was my wife’s 33rd birthday party .I called String’ s and asked if they could accommodate a reservation for 20? I was told that it would be an hour or so wait. I agreed and called my party .We had people drive form all over Denver, Highlands Ranch, and Castle Pines. My wife and I personally drove in from Castle Pines a 40min drive. When I arrived I was told by the same person that I had spoken to on the telephone an hour before that String’s would not be able to host our party. I even included my telephone number. The staff was so incompetent and non apologetic that my phone number was written down wrong. Immediately she was to blame me for giving my own number wrong. I asked to speak with the manager and was told that “this situation had been discussed with one of the owners and that he did not have time for it” So while sitting at the bar trying to make sense of this awkward and embarrassing situation. What was I to do? 20 people at a venue that I set up for my wife’s Birthday. I was at the bar having a drink telling the group what was going on .While the bartender was ease dropping. She overheard that we were executives and attorneys at a fortune 500 company in Denver. The same owner that was to busy to discuss the situation came over and amazingly there was a table ready for us. Needless to say we did not give them our business. I feel that String’s has the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. How has this restaurant made it this far? These older generations need to realize that our blue jeans cost more that their suits there days. So don’t judge us! We went to Elway’s downtown and we had a great time. Strings surely can use some lessons from the wonderful staff at Elway’s. I would only recommend this “Denver Mile Stone” only if you want to be embarrassed and to have your night ruined. Cons: TOO MANY TO COUNT more

A tradition in Denver 5/15/2009

If you were around in the '80's, that is what the atmosphere is kind of like. It's just not all that modern but it does have a lush feel to it. The staff is attentive, the owner is usually present and the food and drinks are well-prepared. I enjoy the desserts and breadsticks in particular and the happy hour menu provides a lot of inexpensive options if you just need a snack. However, it is true that it is too pricey to go there with any regularity for a full dinner. It tends to draw an older crowd, which is perfect if you are looking for a quiet, unrushed evening out. Pros: Respectful, elegant service Cons: A tad too 1980's in certain ways more

great place for private parties 4/13/2009

We had my daughter's b-day party there in the back private room. At dessert time, they brought a platter full of miniature desserts for the entire table to enjoy. They allowed me to decorate ahead of time, provided a table for gifts, and were very attentive. My husband is a dessert chef and was VERY impressed. We are not easy to impress: he is originally from NY; I am originally from (downtown) Atlanta, GA: 2 meccas for fine food. However, we were very pleasantly impressed! We will return, Noah! Pros: great attentive staff more

Great Food 4/12/2009

I can only afford to go to Strings every now and again and it always exceeds my expectations and the wait staff is very attentive. But the last time I was in there I had a hard day at work and sat in the back for some privacy and relaxation. But the strange thing was that the owner ?or manager? was on the upper level staring down at me and that made me very uncomfortable and I just glared back at him but he never appologised or anything ,it was very strange??I felt like I was being spied on. Pros: Food and service Cons: peeping owner more

Not as expensive as it sounds 2/6/2009

I eat at Strings pretty regularly (and then head over to Dbar for desert). While the description says its expensive, its not really. There is a good choice of things on the menu that are really well priced and the starters are usually big enough to eat on their own. I highly recomend the beef carpaccio or during the summer they had a camembert with honey that was amazing. If your trying to reduce your soct try the 5280 ($26.40) 4 course menu every Sunday or a half order of the pasta. \r \r The wait staff is always friendly and the bussers are fast. Pros: Good food with a relaxing atmosphere more

Clearing up mistake in other review 5/7/2008

Disappointed 4/17/2008

My first experience at Strings was disappointing. I went with two friends on a Monday night. The service was excellent, the bread was great, but the meal wasn't at all what I expected from the reputation or the price. I ordered the New York Strip steak, and asked that it be cooked rare. The steak was somewhat overcooked, but that wasn't so bad -- I expect that, honestly. The potatoes on the side were overly salty, and the side-dish of sauteed spinach was so salty as to be inedible. The dessert wasn't that great either -- the mousse cake had a flavorless, cakelike crust that didn't go at all well with the mousse. The coffee, however, was wonderful. \r \r Again, the service was great, but I won't be back, nor will I recommend the restaurant to friends. Pros: Great service, delicious bread, excellent martini Cons: The food wasn't good, was poorly seasoned and hadn't been tasted before leaving the kitchen. more

Last Restaurant Critic Review I Heed 2/15/2008

Based on the review by local review critic Jason Sheehan of the Westword I looked forward to going to Strings. The restaurant does have its followers which I won't be a part of nor will I refer anyone to this restaurant based on my experience. I did have high hopes on this restaurant ; it has been a staple of the 17th Street scene and it's locally owned. The menu was heavy on the seafood although Colorado is landlocked, as we all know, oddly all but one of the appetizers on the Winter 2008 menu were seafood based. I didn't think it was price effective to get seafood out of season, but they seem to think differently. The service was non-existent besides when she took our order, dropped our food, and dropped our check and this was a slow night. I did have to hold her at the table so I could get my credit card out, I didn't know if she was ever going to come back. I ordered the Filet mignon, medium, can't go wrong their and the damn thing was burnt on the outside and the better part of well done on the inside. It was dry as a piece of leather and for $32 bucks. The white wine risotto it came with lacked cream, butter, cheese, seasoning and talent. It tasted more like mushy watered down rice pilaf . Redbird Chicken was ordered too, but it also was lacking salt and the accompaniments were many and over the top: dry corn bread, swiss chard and a sunny side up egg, nothing went together on that plate, tastes included. At the conclusion, I told the server that when guests leave half of their entrees on the plate it should tell you something was wrong. She was indifferent and insulted me by calling me cheap when she immediately offered to have them taken off. She didn't even want to listen to why it was a bad experience. Money wasn't the issue and she could have offered a multitude of things: attention to detail being one of them or a choice of different entrees. Instead she offered us no reason to return unless I wanted to be insulted. Pros: free parking on street, local restaurant Cons: Non-existent server, don't order steak, indifferent staff more

Great bar menu 8/9/2007

Even though the Meal Price is listed as $$$$, you can eat at Strings on a regular basis by enjoying the bar menu. You can even order off this menu sitting outside on the patio while people watching, but we do enjoy sitting in the bar when Chris (or it could be Kris) is bartending. She is friendly, personable, and mixes great drinks. A personal favorite is the Beef Carpaccio, which is served on a chilled glass block. I don't know if it's the presentation or just a better cut of beef, but it's my favorite Carpaccio in Denver. There's also a tempura-battered chicken nugget that comes with a dipping sauce. It's a McDonald's McNugget that went to finishing school. It comes with a dipping sauce that seems to change seasonally. The only drawback to this is if you really liked the dipping sauce at one point and it changes, you can't ask for it. But that's not much of a flaw. I think I've only ever ordered off of the main menu one time, and I'm sure whatever it was was delicious, but that bar menu lets us order a lot of items to mix and match and is generally inexpensive. There is valet parking at the corner of Humboldt and 17th, but you can usually find parking within a block or two. All-in-all, I really enjoy Strings and have no real ""con"" to list. Pros: The Bar Menu, The Bartender, The homemade ice creams and sorbets Cons: I've never experienced a con more

Classic Denver Dining 5/11/2007

A nice dining experience starts with a well-made cocktail and Strings doesn't disappoint. Their bar staff know what they're doing, excellent drinks with a smile. The atmosphere is fun and lively with excellent food. Don't miss the carpaccio appetizer, both the presentation and the taste are fantastic. Service was smooth, timely and friendly with attentive bus staff supporting knowledgeable servers. Strings has been a fun place to go in Denver for literally decades and in the restaurant business that kind of logevity is almost a recommendation in itself. Enjoy. Pros: Lively fine dining in Denver classic Cons: Don't sit upstairs (low ceiling and noisy) more

A Valentine's Disappoinment 2/16/2007

My boyrfiend and I went to Strings on Valentine's Day based on a few recommendations. I'm thinking people who have enjoyed this restaurant have been here before when it was not a holiday. When we first got there we waited at the bar until our table was ready. The bartender said they would send a waitress over to serve us, but no one showed. The service the rest of the evening was similiar. We only saw our waitress twice, there was no overview of the menu, and our wine took almost as long as our appetizers to arrive. They had a set menu. My boyfriend ordered the venison, which appeared to only be raisons and sauce with no meat. My ravioli was borderline raw and just awful. We received the last of the lobster tail, which was overcooked and the butter sauce was extremely salty. The only positive outcome was that upon complaining, we were not charged and offered a free lunch. Pros: Good wine and we were compensated for our complaints Cons: poor service and food more

Boring and Over-priced 2/15/2007

Very boring food. VERY over-priced pre-fixed menu for holiday. I would not recommend it to anyone. Pros: good neighborhood with other choices Cons: very over-priced more

Liver & Onions, Penne Pasta, Salmon You name it! 8/13/2006

I have been going to Strings since it first opened. I have never, ever had anything that I wasn't absolutely 100% satisfied with. The food is wonderful, service top cabin and a charming atmosphere. It is one of the few places in the world where you can dress to the nines and feel comfortable, or simply be driving down the street wearing shorts and sandals and stop in and feel perfectly comfortable. While reservations are strongly advised, who wouldn't wait in the charming bar for a table should you have forgotten to call ahead. Noel and Tammy cunningham are two of the finest people you could ever meet. An absolute must for visiting friends and relatives. Whether it be a birthday, holiday, a special treat or simply stopping by for a light lunch, it is an institution in our beautiful city. I do wish, however, that they would bring back Saturday lunches. I do miss that, indeed. Pros: Food and service are 2nd to none. Simple and elegant, so you always feel comfortable and welcome. Cons: Honestly can't think of any except that I wish thet were still open for Saturday lunch. more

One of my favorite restaurants 6/24/2006

I just love dining at Strings. The food and service are always top notch. The owner, Noel Cunningham, is such a wonderful philanthropist and a terrific conversationalist. He always asks my children to go into the kitchen with him to make their own sundaes. My two kids adore Noel and my whole family loves going to Strings. Try the beef carpaccio and the drink specials. Pros: Great service and terrific food more

Just amazing! 12/22/2005

I went to Strings for the first time tonight, and was blown away by every aspect of my evening. Every staff member from the hostess to the wait staff and bussers, especially the manager, were concerned with everything being perfect, which it was. The service was outstanding, bread at the beginning was full of flavor, and everything on the menu looked great. I have the pasta special for the night and my date had Sea Bass, and both were out of this world. The prices are much lower than you would expect for being listed as a 4$ establishment, but the service and quality exceed that of restaurants where I would pay twice as much. I am mad I didn't find this place before. I will return and continue to spread the word about my new favorite restaurant. Pros: Wonderful Flavors, Outstanding Staff, Desserts! more

Declining service & food 9/8/2005

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Denver but not anymore. The last few times we have been here, service was awful. At different meals the staff was rude, the meals items were brought out cold or at different times, the wait times between courses was over an hour, etc. The only thing constant is the terrible service. Call me crazy but when you order port with dessert, you actually expect it to be brought out with dessert- not when you get the bill. \r \r The food is also declining but is still pretty good. I still love the carpaccio and tuna tartar but as an example, some of the grilled veggies on my salad were slimy and old- almost unedible. \r \r We won't be going back here anymore. I don't know what happened over the last few years but we have given it many chances in the hope that they were just having an off-night. It seems everyt time we go, they have an off night. There are plenty of other upscale restaurants that have great service and food for less than what you pay at Strings. \r \r MY OLD REVIEW FROM 2005: Carpaccio and Tuna Tartar To Die For: I am a bit biased because I love their sister restaurant, 240 Union, but Strings is delightful. Every course is well prepared and the appetizers are especially good. My favorites are the carpaccio and tuna tartar. Even the bread that is served is amazing! The wine can be a bit overpriced but it is well worth paying a bit more when it is accompanied by the delicious food. Pros: not many pros anymore Cons: poor service, average food more

The one. 8/29/2005

Strings is perfect for entertaining out of town guests, good friends, or just a special dinner for the two of you. The food is superb, the wine list is one of the best in denver, the desserts are perfectly paired with after-dinner cordials. The service is attentive, but not stuffy. The ambience suits shorts or, well, suits. Explore new restaurants, try the latest food craze, but you will come back here for reliably the best and most consistent dining experience. And Noel and Tammy do it all for the love of serving their guests and to support too many causes and people to count. Pros: Variety, Creativity, Service Cons: Any "cons" would be, someone else's pros. more

Best gets better... 8/21/2005

After so being open for so long you would think that Strings would be out of touch, not at all! I have not had such wonderfull food in so long. The Chicken sliders on the patio menu are heaven in my mouth! The Bartender is Cute as well as knowledgeable about the menu. I highly recomend this eatery to anyone who wants to see or be seen, or who wants just great food and service. more

They just about had to roll us out! 8/15/2005

Perfect! Everything we had was phenomenal. The ambiance was a little 80's old school with lots of black and white and less than spiffy bathrooms, but the food was so great that we'll be back! We are out-of- towners and don't even want to try something new. I know we'll leave comfortably full and completely satisfied again. The staff seemed to know a lot about wine and were very helpful. It felt like a great neighborhood retreat. The night we were there basketball celebs were in and no one made a fuss. NICE. Pros: food, menu, deals Cons: bathrooms, facade more
