Based on the review by local review critic Jason Sheehan of the Westword I looked forward to going to Strings. The restaurant does have its followers which I won't be a part of nor will I refer anyone to this restaurant based on my experience. I did have high hopes on this restaurant ; it has been a staple of the 17th Street scene and it's locally owned. The menu was heavy on the seafood although Colorado is landlocked, as we all know, oddly all but one of the appetizers on the Winter 2008 menu were seafood based. I didn't think it was price effective to get seafood out of season, but they seem to think differently. The service was non-existent besides when she took our order, dropped our food, and dropped our check and this was a slow night. I did have to hold her at the table so I could get my credit card out, I didn't know if she was ever going to come back. I ordered the Filet mignon, medium, can't go wrong their and the damn thing was burnt on the outside and the better part of well done on the inside. It was dry as a piece of leather and for $32 bucks. The white wine risotto it came with lacked cream, butter, cheese, seasoning and talent. It tasted more like mushy watered down rice pilaf . Redbird Chicken was ordered too, but it also was lacking salt and the accompaniments were many and over the top: dry corn bread, swiss chard and a sunny side up egg, nothing went together on that plate, tastes included. At the conclusion, I told the server that when guests leave half of their entrees on the plate it should tell you something was wrong. She was indifferent and insulted me by calling me cheap when she immediately offered to have them taken off. She didn't even want to listen to why it was a bad experience. Money wasn't the issue and she could have offered a multitude of things: attention to detail being one of them or a choice of different entrees. Instead she offered us no reason to return unless I wanted to be insulted.
Pros: free parking on street, local restaurant
Cons: Non-existent server, don't order steak, indifferent staff
