Unimpressed 4/16/2007

I just went here with 2 friends on a Saturday night. We ordered the $45 tasting menu which seemed to be a good deal. However, we found the three starters to be either not flavorful enough or overly flavorful (i.e., too fatty and/or salty). The 2 main courses and dessert were ""just alright."" I suppose for $45 it is still a good deal for a 6 course meal, but I would rather pay an extra $20 and go to a restaurant like Blue Hill for a much more satisfactory and enjoyable meal and dining experience. Pros: Ambience, restaurant is small and cozy Cons: Service, bathroom door was left open often and strong lysol scent would invade dining room more

Great place to take a date! 2/12/2007

My girlfriend recently took me here on a romantic date. We try to choose different restaurants to surprise each other with each week and this one is one of the most memorable experiences I?ve had so far. We were seated on time in a corner table and the server was very friendly. We tried the Chef?s tasting menu and it was simply one of the best dinners I?ve had in a while. I?ve been to a few of these pre-fix menu places and usually, if it?s 5 or more courses, they try to through in a one or two lame dishes to make up on of the courses. At this place, every single dish that came out was unique and tasty. The wine was great. Best of all, I was pleasantly surprised looking at the total when the check arrived (unfortunately, I have to foot the bill irrespective of who picks the restaurant). Overall, the food is fantastic and the ambiance is a little dark and mellow, but perfect for a romantic date. I will definitely go back to this place sometime. Pros: The Chef's tasting menu is delicious (and doesn't hurt the wallet) Cons: A little dimly lit but perfect for a date. Wouldn't really take kids/family here. more

Tasting menu was fun! 1/25/2007

My finace and I had a bit of trouble making and confirming a reservation which was originally made at 8pm for a Saturday night. The night before we dined, we got two phone calls confirming a 7:30 pm reservation. It wasnt what we wanted but we are flexible so we went with the flow. We arrived to an almost empty room and was asked to have a drink at the bar until our table was ready?. Again, had a little trouble with being seated, but the Chef poured us each a comp glass of bubbly to ease our wait time...it was fine with us!!! We also participated in the chefs tasting menu and was very happy. There was a lot of food and the bread is outstanding!!! Loved the goat cheese and polenta ap and LOOOVED the Skate with Green Curry and green apple shavings....didnt like the rubbery lamb shoulder with an array of flavored sauces smudged on the plate that didnt mix well together...BUT who cared..we were full at that point anyways and what a warming atmosphere for a cold night out. All and all, LOVED the food and would go back for sure! more

Just lucky? 1/19/2007

We decided to visit Knife and Fork with very low expectations, just as we have with other restaurants that have mixed citysearch reviews. We are sometimes dissapointed as was the case with ""L----- G----"" another East Village restaurant and sometimes, pleasantly suprised. In Knife and Fork's case, I was blown away. They seemed to favor the tasting menu, so we went with it, thinking ""if this is horrible, then it's only $45 for 6 courses."" Every course was amazing, though it did border on too much food by the 6th course. The bread lived up to what other citysearchers wrote about it. We even bought a loaf before we left! The service I can understand some people not liking, that's if you love constant attention - I don't like being ""over-serviced"", as most of the time I find it insincere. We'll definetly go back, just to try the delicious looking cheese plate which I couldn't manage after that tasting menu. I'd recommend you try this place. I think the reviews overall end up painting a deceiving picture. Pros: ingridient combinations I've never seen before Cons: no liquor more

Best bread 1/2/2007

I have visited K&F many times since it opened in the spring. I have been very pleased with the service and the food is exceptional. Chef Damien Brassel is very talented. It is a small start-up restaurant that has withstood the challenges of opening in NYC very well. You would do well to visit this gem of a restaurant in the East Village. And the bread is to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: the location and the vibe Cons: no hard liquor more

Horrible food and service--Owner should be embarrassed 12/18/2006

I have had the pleasure of eating at many of the world?s finest restaurants and food at various culinary levels. Yet, I have never in my life experienced a more unpleasant and disappointing experience than I did at Knife + Fork. The evening started well enough with an Amuse Bouche that was quite flavorful and the restaurant itself had a pleasant decor. However?those were the only highlights of a disappointing and horrific meal. First, the waiter was rude and inattentive. With only three tables in the restaurant?he could not manage to check on us once for more wine or about the quality of the meal. More so, he refused to address the woman at the table?who was our host and who ordered the wine and meal. If the waiter was not awful enough, the meal was so inedible that the chef should have been ashamed to send it to the dining room. It was disappointingly evident that the chef had not tasted a single dish he had prepared. The foie gras was sub par and was more like fat off a ham hock. The squid stuffed with duck confit was so improperly cooked that the squid had the consistency of a tire and the duck was so dry and poorly prepared that it tasted like and had the consistency of canned tuna. The entree was simply the breaking point?the lamb shank with lentils on a bed of cheese was served with uncooked lentils---it does not take a culinary genius to know that lentils should never be served at the consistency of a pill. When the problem was described to the waiter?he unhappily took the plate back and after 15 minutes bought out the same piece of meat with the lentils scraped off and no sauce. Reheating an already dry piece of lamb shank does not improve the meat?and with no sauce?it had the consistency sawdust. This was a horrible dining experience?and the owner of the restaurant should send his chef back to culinary school and the waiter to finishing school. Pros: There is nothing positive about this restaurant. Cons: Stay away at all costs. more

At least they provided knives and forks 12/11/2006

Expereince was ok -= food was good, service was severly lacking, strange, and bordering on rude, even though we kept taking everything in stride. decor was cool (we went to enjoy the good food under rustic vibe), but dinnerware did not match the vibe at all (they were eastern/japenese sleek) and was a bit confusing as to what they wanted to be. Food was good, but good service to honor that good food was not present. don't mind laid-back, but basic measures of restaurant behavior were not met. Making reservations was equal to another reviewer's experience, so i'm glad to know it wasn't us. Made reservations for a birthday dinner for 2 sat nt, requesting specific table, with plenty of advanced notice. called few days before to slightly adjust time, and you'd think i was calling Lutece, as i was emphatically refused my slight change. showed up on time, no clue who we were, nor of our table request. rest of the nt was spent in nearly empty restaurant (so much for unchangabley tight reservations) and quite uncomfortable on the bench of the banquette, the seats oddly halfway facing each other, but not really. we were also disappointed by the lack of any real presence of vegetables, other than a garnish. dessert was fantastic tasting (pear/red wine sauce), fortunately i was able to get passed the presentation: it looked like a giant cow patty, fresh from the field! is that what was meant by ""Fresh Green Market Ingredients""? after having this regrettable experience, came to find a message left late friday nt at my work number (they had my personal too) confirming the wrong time, which was the exact time i wanted, that they refused to give me. ironic. Pros: food Cons: service more

excellent food for small intimate dinner 12/10/2006

Knife & Fork definitely needs to be more organized regarding reservations and better service, but the food is excellent. They had no record of our reservation despite my calling twice to confirm, as a result we had to wait. But they accommodated us fairly quickly. The service was not attentive, we had to keep topping up our own wine glasses and asking for water. The food however was excellent, from the starters to the bread [which no one brought to our table till we asked for it] and desserts. Its a small restaurant so dont go there if you are a big group, its perfect for 2-4 friends looking to catch up over a nice slow meal. Pros: intimate setting, great food Cons: slow service more

Great atmosphere and incredibly delicious food! 12/4/2006

I had a great evening at the Knife+Fork dinging there with some friends. The atmosphere is cosy - dimmed light, wooden tables, super-friendly staff and a stunning painting from a Spanish artist - the food is incredibly tasty and the wines just delicious - fitting perfectly well with the food. This is now definitely one of my favorite restaurants in NY! Pros: ambience, food, wine, service more

Writing their own reviews 11/16/2006

service is lacking and could mar your dining experience 11/13/2006

my friends and i were on a girls trip to new york and decided to dine here (we made reservations in advance). when we got there, we were told that we made reservations for three (which was wrong - we made reservations for 4) and that they tried to confirm our reservation but received no response (which was also wrong because we did not receive such a call). the hostess/server was rude especially because such attitude was unnecessary -- they had a table that fits 4 people and acknowledged that they received our reservation. anyhow, the introductory experience marred my dining experience a bit. to be fair, the place is small but has a nice charm and coziness. we all tried the tasting menu. the food was good but not spectacular. the soup was a bit bland. the scallops over seaweed salad was very good and tasty (which had a nice spicy kick to it once a soup was poured over it). the salmon over seaweed salad was also very good - not fishy and tasted fresh. the cod was average. the venison with thai cury sauce was not good -- it was too salty and ruined the meat. all 4 of us had 2 bites (to give the entree a second chance) and that was all we were willing to eat. the bread was fresh, home made and heavy. if i ever visit new york again, i would not go back -- there are other places around with better food and service. Cons: hostess/server with a bad attitude more

One of a Kind 11/13/2006

Tired of the same old same old? This is the place for you. We tried the tasting menu, which was like a leisurely trip to exotic lands. My favorites were the snapper and dal beans and the escargot and pork belly (as tender a piece of pork as I've ever had). I was skeptical of the kangaroo, but it turned out to be reminiscent of steak but more tender. Fortunately, the staff was friendly and helpful in explaining the dishes. The space is intimate and pleasant. I recommend going on a Sunday night, which tends to be relatively sane, for a memorable evening with good friends. Pros: Food, service more

Simply great food and wine 11/13/2006

The menu was so different from anywhere we had been, we just had to wander in. The atmosphere was warm, yet lively with small groups of friends and romantic dates alike. The tasting menu was certainly a great value, both concerning quality and quantity of the food. The taste of each dish was simple yet uniquely and creatively combined on beautifully artistic plates. Our favorite was certainly the squid stuffed with duck confit and it was difficult not to fill up on the warm brown bread. Our waitress was busy, but never failed to ask how we enjoyed each dish; and what a relief to see that she actually cared if we were having a good experience! We opted for wines by the glass and were more than pleased with the results, from a Slovakian Riesling to Australian Cabernet. The entire experience was, in a word, lovely. Pros: Originality of Menu, Warm Service and Ambience more

Good Value but Slightly Disappointing 11/12/2006

I was very excited to try this place based on the reviews, but despite my desire to like it, I was a bit disappointed. The restaurant itself is very charming, warm wood, beatiful candles, etc. - but that was quickly tainted by the service. Although the waitresses acknowledged we made reservations 2 months in advance and there were actually tables available, they made a big deal about calling to confirm but not having received a return call. I advised them I never received a call but they kept insisting. My point is does it really matter in this case when they have a table available? It really gave us a bad impression from the start. Then we ordered the chef's tasting menu, and while some items were quite good (i.e., seared scallop in broth, braised pork belly), some were just plain awful (i.e., thai curry venison - so oversalted that the only things you tasted was salt and peppercorn; when the waitresses inquired why we barely touched it, we told them it was too salty and one waitress literally glared at us and the other just looked sad - but no one really apologized or acknowledged that it was pretty bad - this isn't a matter of subjective taste when a table of 4 people can't stomach the same entree..). The meal ended with a pumpkin tart-like dessert that only half the table enjoyed. Luckily it was only $45 for the tasting menu so it wasn't a huge loss. Based on the price and the few glimmers of good food, I would still recommend another try for people who live nearby - but this is definitely not a destination spot for people like me who travel to distant locations to try amazing food. Pros: Warm Interior Cons: Sour service; Inconsistent Food more

Passion as an ingredient 10/31/2006

As a self-professed foodie this is the type of place I love dining at. I thought I'd visit it a couple of times before forming an opinion or writing a review (judging by what others have said here). I have been back four times now...and I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend this to anyone and everyone. Yes, on one night the balance of flavors wasn't as spot on as I was used to but, hey, that's the exciting thing about a place where the chef is 'ballsy' enough to tweak the menu constantly according to the market or what wacked inspiration he had that day. And, he seems to run the kitchen on his own! How he pumps out that food on a busy night is astounding. The service? Well it was as refreshing as the food. You'd expect pretentious staff but what you get is a couple of very pleasant young ladies who add to the experience by being very well versed in what they put in front of you. Knife and Fork is one of the few fine dining places I'd return to regularly, on the basis that it will suprise and challenge my pallette on every visit. Pros: constantly testing your palette Cons: constantly testing your palette more

Not impressed 10/29/2006

We tried Knife and Fork this weekend. Nice atmosphere and great wine and beer lists. The food was just average, and if you factor in the price of the food, then I would say it was below average. There was complimentary bread, which I thought was horrible, dry tasteless bread. Perhaps it was some type of ethnic bread. I didn't care for it, nor did my date. We also received a small dish of complimentary soup/tea. It was some type of tea/tomato mix, I thought that was bad too. I could not even get it down, and I eat and usually enjoy everything. We started out with the Quail/date dish. I think it was $14 and it was about the size of a chicken wing. It was ok. Nothing special. I had the short ribs, which had the same sauce as the quail, and was at least half grizzle. I know short ribs are fatty, but it truly was excessive. My date had the Skate. Her dinner was better than mine, but very basic and bland. One app, two dinners, 2 beers, and 2 glasses of wine came to a hundred bucks. I'm don't mind spending that much on a meal, but I do get upset when the food is less than average. Atmosphere is nice and service was fine, I just think for the money (~$28 entree's), the food could be a lot better. Bottom line, the east village is full of great restaurants with better food at almost half the price. As quaint as it was, chances are slim that we will ever go back to this restaurant. I wouldn't recommend it. Pros: atmosphere, wine list Cons: food, bread, light from the kitchen more

Always a Wonderful Experience! 9/27/2006

Last night we spent a wonderful evening with a group of friends at Knife & Fork. Everyone in our group chose to do the 6 course tasting menu, which we have had before and highly recommended. It is the ideal way to go at this intimate candlelit restaurant with attentive waiters and music playing softly in the background. The tasting menu gives everyone the opportunity to really experience the chef, Damien Brassel's excellent creations, each course is a delight to the taste buds and flow smoothly into one another with just the right portions. My personal favorites were the rock shrimp marinated in curry with grapefruit, apple and squid ink emulsion and the braised short ribs which are so tender and juicy the meat falls gently off the bone. The chef also makes his own Irish bread served with butter and sea salt, delicious! Not many places in New York give you enough time to enjoy an evening without feeling rushed like Knife & Fork, we had a wonderful time here with our friends and will definitely come back again and again! more

Decent Food, Slow Service, Not Worth The Trek 8/23/2006

The $45 six course prix fixe is a good deal but unless you have over 3 hours set aside, be prepared for a long wait. The place is obviously understaffed, there are 2 servers for the entire restaurant & 1 chef manning the kitchen. There is no way to speed up the order and when I asked nicely if it was possible, I was told that ""everything is made to order."" Is this not the case in most restaurants? Ironically, I tried to accommodate THEM by requesting for dessert after 3 dishes and was told off by the server for being impatient and that we had only been there for ""less than an hour."" Meanwhile we had been there for literally 1 & 1/2 hrs. Of course, no apologies whatsover when she was a**-ed out. The chef even came out to defend himself and telling us ""this is not fast food"" which I do realize and granted if the food was mind blowing I might feel slightly embarrassed. Unfortunately the food was barely above average and it was 11:30pm on a Wed night. Even a 7 course meal at Per Se does not take this long and the staff need to realize that they are NOT Per Se. Not a good idea to insinuate that the customer does not know how to appreciate fine dining. The chef clearly has high aspirations which is fine but there is no need to be so full of it and to insult your guests. Very disappointed with the service. Definitely will not be back. Pros: Good value, relaxing atmosphere Cons: Extremely slow service, arrogant staff more

3 words: excellent, excellent, and excellent. 8/18/2006

It seems I never have the time to sit down and write a review about my evening's experience but this is one occasion I could simply not pass up. While strolling through the East Village with a friend we happened upon a cozy and beautiful restaurant called Knife and Fork. My friend's complain about what a picky eater I am, in fact in drives my friend nuts, but what can I say? I love food and I want it to be pleasing on every level. Last night's experience at Knife and Fork was just that. We decided to go with the tasting menu so that we could try a little bit of everything. Usually in that kind of situation I would expect to enjoy maybe one of the dishes and probably dislike one and think the others were so so. This is the one and only occasion that I've tried so many different dishes and was blown away by every one of them. We started with a little tea cup of tomato soup to settle the stomach and then moved on to the scallops which were juicy and delicious. Then we moved on to the cured salmon which I believe had a cauliflower cream and was served with a little seaweed salad. That may have been my favorite of all the dishes but it's hard to say. Each plate was beautifully presented and even more delicious. We then moved on to the goat cheese and polenta. This dish was absolutely incredible. Rich, soft, melting goat cheese over juicy polenta. Lush. We finished off with a juicy quail wrapped in bacon. The thing that impressed me the most is how well balanced and sophisticated everything tasted. No fluff or filler or one ting taste (which is what I experience a lot of the time) just exquiste little specific dishes. Anyway I was just so thoroughly impressed I had to share, from one food obsessed maniac to hopefully another. Pros: Food, ambiance, wines more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Buzzing foodies with a panoply of accents fill the intimate space, which has been designed with cross-Atlantic flair. The kidney-shaped bar and thick wood tables proudly rep the nabe's bohemian history, while the thin, long-stemmed wine glasses and designer cutlery divulge posher tendencies. Finally, beaded candleholders, tall breeze-friendly windows and white stucco walls (with a rounded cutout leading to the kitchen) strike decidedly Mediterranean notes.

    The Food
Irish chef Damien Brassel trained in formidable kitchens across Europe and North America, and his eclectic menu ping-pongs vigorously between old and new world sensibilities. Fresh Greenmarket ingredients co-star in nearly every dish. Zaftig scallops get an earthy accompaniment of tangy citrus-accented couscous. Beef carpaccio nearly melts on the tongue before pointing the way to the tart surprise of its plate-mate, "overnight tomatoes." The showstopper: Tender venison with a gorgeous smear of parsnip puree and a smattering of edible orchid petals.
