Excellent tasting menu, lovely decor, with room for a couple of improvements 9/19/2008

Wow, do I ever disagree with the last two reviews! Perhaps your palate needs a little refinement... My wife and I live around the corner from this place, and we are delighted to have discovered a place that is never noisy or overcrowded and serves exquisite food with friendly and competent wait staff. We always get the tasting menu and have loved it every time. The chef shines with his creative food compositions and artistic presentation. Dessert was delicious! tonight was a duet of creme brulee and coffee panna cotta. Pros: great food, artfully presented Cons: middle tables a little bit uncomfortable more

Atrocious would be the best word to describe this place! 9/18/2008

I should file suit this place for completely ruining my night. Went for what I thought would be a romantic evening with my boyfriend only to find both the service and the food appalling. The six course tasting menu was either bland or overly salted. The pork belly was simply a piece of fat, impossible to swallow. The fish tasted like a lake and the duck was of questionable grade. All together a horrible and overpriced experience. Our night would have been better spent at home with a frozen dinner. Pros: None. Cons: Everything. more

Disappointing, Bland and Gross 9/7/2008

We eat out quite a bit, but tend to go to the same solid places again and again. Now I know why. My boyfriend and I wanted to try somewhere new and, based on the reviews on citysearch (which we have used with success in the past), chose Knife and Fork. What a mistake. The place is quite cute and the setting is rustic and even romantic. But from the minute we walked through the door, the service was shoddy. Despite that the restaurant was only half full and we had a reservation, we were asked to wait at the bar. But no one at the bar asked us what we would like, so we just sat there, staring at all of the empty tables incredulously. There was no apology when we were finally seated. They were just inexplicably ready for us. We sat and then waited for about 15 minutes with our menus before we were even asked what we wanted to drink (by then, we knew our entire order). We ordered a bottle of the Magnet Pinot Noir, which was quite nice. We also shared the Pork Belly appetizer, which was terrible. We've had excellent pork belly at Aurora in Brooklyn and elsewhere in the city and normally like the dish. This, though, was a thick chunk of charred fat. It was tasteless, it was chewy and it was just...burned. Not even charred in a pleasant way, just burned. I mean, I've had big pieces of pork belly before and it's not a healthy food - it is largely fat. But this was gross. For dinner, I had the duck and my boyfriend had the cod. Both were tasteless and mediocre. In fact, my duck was pretty uncooked and I felt really ill when I got home. His cod was just oddly tasteless, even despite the addition of oysters and some unidentifiable light sauce. Needless to say, we didn't order dessert. There are a lot of great restaurants in the East Village, but this just isn't one of them. Pros: Nice setting, romantic seating Cons: Terrible food and poor service more

great value on the prix fixe 8/18/2008

Nice, but somewhat uninspired atmosphere. Pros: prix fixe menu Cons: service more

Amazing Adventure! 5/29/2008

I am usually not very adventurous with my dining, but my sister took me to this restaurant on my last visit to NY and I was blown away. I tried so many new things on the tasting menu that I could not believe I was eating, but LOVED. This chef has opened my eyes to so many new flavors and ingredients! The seared ahi tuna was amazing, as was the duck breast and the foie gras. I would not only recommend this to people who normally like fine cuisine, but also to those who are willing to try something new. The 6 course tasting menu at $45 is a steal and a great way to try new things! Pros: $45 6 course tasting menu! Cons: Can't think of any! more

MMMMM... This is what dining is all about! 5/24/2008

I do not usually write this sort of thing, but I felt compelled to after last Friday. The food was top notch and the service was good. The berkshire pork belly was delectable and the wine was skillfully paired. Highly recommended. more

Awful service with a conceited attitude and horrible attempts at sophistication in the food. 5/17/2008

The food and service were awful. The waitress had a horrible attitude and acted as though we were priviliged to be dining at the restaurant. They were very unaccomodating to a vegetarian in our group. The entrees were not seasoned properly, and out of the 4 we ordered only 1 was decent. The lime creme brulee dessert was disgusting, in both flavor and consistency. DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT there are far better options in the neighborhood at this price. Pros: Very cute decor, looks like a great little restaurant Cons: Everything else, from the service to the attitude of the server and the food more

Bad 5/13/2008

I usually only write good reviews, but this is the first review I have felt compelled to write about a bad restaurant. From the wine (we got an overpriced Gruner that was totally mediocre), to the service (waiter doubled as the bartender and wouldn't look us in the eye), to the food (scallops with a wasabi white chocolate sauce that was like cake icing) it was truly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Sorry. I was excited by the $45 tasting menu but you get what you pay for. However, with wine and service total bill was $195...very disappointing. Pros: Location Cons: Food, Price, Service more

The Bread is always Great! 3/28/2008

I really really love this place...the bread is amazing and the place always smell of it being baked everday...the tasting menu is always a surprise the mixture of seabass and bacon with mustard seed...the tender short ribs with chive mash potatoes...my husband and I always have an amazing time...enjoying each dish ...i finally thought i would come write a review...45 dollars is not at all bad for a 6 course tasting. i recommend this place to all of my friends and they always come back raving. more

Over-priced!!! 3/27/2008

What a disappointment - the location and ambience of this restaurant is SO casual, and I was so taken aback when we sat down and read the menus. This place is pseudo-pretentious - there are limitted options on the menu, and the prices are outrageous. Skip this one over!!!! Pros: The check arrived Cons: Only diners in the restaurant, way overpriced more

Nauseating... 3/24/2008

the worst dining experience i've had in years. Confrontational server. It was apparent he couldnt wait to go home. we had the tasteless tasting menu. The ambience was tacky and the flavor combinations dated. Cons: ..... more

an enjoyable experience 12/9/2007

I was surprised to read so many different opinions on this restaurant. I guess that's the reason why I love this place. I have been there several times and have enjoyed each of them. Always a different yet pleasurable experience. The chef pushes the limit, mixes ingredients, and challenges your senses. The ambiance is cozy, non pretentious, leaving you room to focus on the food and the conversation. The service is friendly. I agree that sometimes slow, but... who cares when you are enjoying a pleasant dinner with fine wine. The tasting menu is a must, especially when sharing a table with friends. Definitely worth a visit! more

Superb! 12/9/2007

I don't normally write reviews, but I was looking up the restaurant information to send a thank you note for the amazing experience I had here with a large group of friends last week and saw the most recent review and felt compelled. I don't know where this person came from but my experience was the complete opposite. We also had the tasting menu which was beautifully presented, perfectly portioned and delicious. Each course was a new experience and all wonderful. The food is different, and interesting so I guess it may not appeal to people who want the same thing they can find everywhere else, but it was definitely not unapproachable. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable explaining each course to us in detail. I am looking forward to my next chance to go back! Pros: $45 for an exceptional 6 course tasting menu Cons: Can be a little loud more

Why is this still open? 12/2/2007

I'm not spending too much time on this review because I'm in the process of forgetting I ever had this experience. The food was nothing short of nauseating. I did the tasting menu this past Saturday and I regretted it after the first course. I had a bite of every dish regardless of the presentation or the undesirable combination of certain ingredients so I'm qualified to give an accurate review. Please don't waste your time and evergy. Save yourself! more

check it out if you like to try new things... 7/23/2007

i recently went back and the menu was out of this world...my girlfriends mom was in town and she said she wanted to go to a place were she had to make little decisions...so on the day before she went home..i booked a table and told her to sit back and enjoy the ride...we did the 6 course tasting with the wine pairing ...85 bucks talk about worth it...we had truffle scallops with a wasabi cream that balanced the truffle out paired with an amazing french rose...a pork belly with an apricot puree and apple salad...and a roasted haddock with a thai three bean salad...the waiters were patient to repeat what we had infront of us even when my girl friends mom went out to smoke...can't wait to come back...my girlfriends mom was so pleased she's telling all her friends back home about this place...and bought a loaf of bread to take back ...the waiter says its great with nutella... Pros: All of the above Cons: when dessert hits the table...i want more... more

Don't bother 7/8/2007

Ambience: Yes, it's nice. Doors open for the summer. Vibe is good. Once you get your food, you'll probably wonder about the enourmous plates that emphasize the smallish food portions. It was amusing trying to make room on our medium-sized table. Even the waitstaff remarked how dumb the set-up is. Pros: Ambience Cons: Bland food, comical waitstaff, poor value more

Special adventure 6/24/2007

As I read the latest reviews I felt compelled to finally write my own. I have been to the restaurant several times since it has opened and have enjoyed each visit. There has definitely been some inconsistency when it comes to the staff, but the most important thing to me is the food and wine. The atmosphere is always comfortable and the food changes with every visit and has never disappointed. I personally found that the new wine pairing is an excellent option as you never know what is coming with the tasting menu and the chef has an excellent ability to pair wines to the flavors he uses. I will continue to go back and recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different offer at great value - $45 for 6 courses how can you go wrong! Pros: Value/Creativity Cons: Consistency of service more

A Disappointing Experience 6/18/2007

After hearing amazing things about this restaurant, we made reservations and went in on Saturday night. The restaurant is in a great neighborhood and has a very warm, inviting setting. Having heard so much about the prix fixe, we decided to do that with the wine pairing. Now, I have to admit, I really don't enjoy writing a poor review, but after having a wonderful dining experience the night after we ate here, I feel the need to warn people about Knife + Fork. The service was absolutely horrible - the gentleman serving us was blatantly rude and dismissing. I have also never been so appalled by the amount of wine poured. The server barely poured enough for us to take more than one sip of each wine - which completely ruins the idea of a wine pairing. The first three courses, ""the starters"", were cured salmon sashimi, foie gras and pumpkin risotto; each was average - good flavors and well prepared. However, the wines did not pair at all. The flavors, instead of highlighting each other, distracted. The next two courses, ""the main courses"", were a skate with a bean sauce and duck with red wine and licorice reduction; these were below average. The skate was topped by a thick bean sauce, while the duck was extremely bland. The dessert was the best part of the meal - a lime creme brulee served with a muscat. Pros: Good wine list, great ambience Cons: SERVICE, wine/food pairing more

Nefarious spell... 5/9/2007

I think it's important to say that I've never felt compelled to write about a restaurant experience although I've eaten at numerous restaurants in many major cities around the world. Tonight was worthy, however. The chef apparently rules the kitchen with no regard to the diners who innocently believe they will get what was ordered. The menu is subject to his whims and leaves the diner wholly unsatisfied. The servers seem to be under this spell as the diner eventually becomes the unfortunate subject of this despotism. A simple farewell is not even given as the check is taken for services barely rendered. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Buzzing foodies with a panoply of accents fill the intimate space, which has been designed with cross-Atlantic flair. The kidney-shaped bar and thick wood tables proudly rep the nabe's bohemian history, while the thin, long-stemmed wine glasses and designer cutlery divulge posher tendencies. Finally, beaded candleholders, tall breeze-friendly windows and white stucco walls (with a rounded cutout leading to the kitchen) strike decidedly Mediterranean notes.

    The Food
Irish chef Damien Brassel trained in formidable kitchens across Europe and North America, and his eclectic menu ping-pongs vigorously between old and new world sensibilities. Fresh Greenmarket ingredients co-star in nearly every dish. Zaftig scallops get an earthy accompaniment of tangy citrus-accented couscous. Beef carpaccio nearly melts on the tongue before pointing the way to the tart surprise of its plate-mate, "overnight tomatoes." The showstopper: Tender venison with a gorgeous smear of parsnip puree and a smattering of edible orchid petals.
