Foul Food and Bad Service - Don't eat here 8/17/2006

I walked by Knife and Fork when they first opened and make a reservation without reading reviews -> bad mistake. I was there with my girlfriend on a Thursday when the place was medium-busy. At the waitresses recommendation we had the tasting menu. Pros: Nice Space, good wine by the glass Cons: Bad Food, Bad Service more

Great atmosphere, amazing appetizers BUT the entrees sucked. 8/17/2006

We were excited to try this place and took our out of town guests for an early dinner. The service was great, but plates were delivered very slowly. The appetizers (scallops, tuna sashimi, foie gras) were all great and everyone was raving about them. The amuse before the meal was exotic and delicious and kept us craving more. However, when our entrees arrived we were all severly disappointed. Two of us had the bass which was extraordinarily bland. Two people had the duck, which was tough and dry. One had the lamb, which was the best dish but nowhere near the same quality or deliciousness of the appetizers. It was disappointing to have such a great start be followed by such a bad ending. We nicely mentioned to the waitress our opinions, which she seemed to appreciate and absorb . Hopefully they will work in improving the entress so it can be an all around great place. Pros: Appetizers, Atmosphere Cons: Entrees more

What a Chef! 7/24/2006

The food was great, the staff was so much fun and the flavours! where does he come up with these?! This resturant is for foodies - coffee with duck, star anised vension, and the cheese plate was to die for!! We did the tasting menu - man thats lot of food... I had to run around the block a few times! The portions were great, hotel coste was the music when I was there, not the chef like some peolpe say. He even came to my table checked if everything was ok. I am a bucther and his cooking was just right the meat was nice and tender and full of flavour. He's just a kid but this kid can cook! Well knife and fork, can't wait till we're back down here Pros: the food is just amazing and fresh Cons: its abit different, not for everyone more

The worst I've ever had 7/23/2006

I went to Knife and Fork recently. My friend and I had been trying to a get reservation on the weekend but could not due to it's popularity. We finally got a table at 6:00pm on a Monday night and thought we'd enjoy a early dinner. Of course the place was empty but that I didn't mind. Pros: Small Portions Cons: The food more

Great dining experience 7/22/2006

I took my date here for his birthday, and the ambiance is very intimate and relaxing. We sat at the highly recommended corner booth, and had a nice view of the restaurant, kitchen, bar, and the street. Our waitress was so friendly and welcoming, and took the time to explain each dish that was served. We got the prix fixed menu, and the chef created tasty and diverse dishes for us with all sorts of meats and veggies. We had a lovely dining experience, were treated very warmly, and I felt that the high bill was well worth it! Pros: fine dining, friendly waitress, good wine more

food suffers because chef is overwhelmed 7/19/2006

We had the tasting menu which sounded delightful on paper but fell short on execution. The food was actually pretty tasty but most dishes were cold. Wait time for food was VERY LONG and I had lots of chances to observe why as I waited and waited....there is ONE chef preparing ALL OF THE DISHES from start to finish. Prep, cooking and plating. ONE other guy in the kitchen who ONLY washes dishes. RIDICULOUS!!! This is why --yes, it is true -- you CAN hear the chef swearing on many an occasion (as many others here have noted.) If they get some HELP IN THERE this place would have a chance. Otherwise, NO WAY. NY'ers NOT gonna tolerate this kind of service. Pros: lovely, relaxed space Cons: loooooooooong waits for food, food overwhelmingly cold more

European style dining 7/18/2006

This was a delightful little restaurant. It reminds me of leisurely dining in France where the menus are always seasonal. The freshness of the ingredients came out in the flavors. Vegtables actually tasted like the vegtables they are instead of bland preservative mush. The chef does have some ""crutch"" flavors that show up in all the dishes so it's not the kind of place you will want to eat everyday. My friend felt the flavors were over-layered, perhaps due to the french/morrocan/eastern european influences. The portions are correctly sized for multi-course dining so you should expect indulge in more than one course. They don't rush your meal, but let you linger for wine and conversation. If you're a beer belly-type guy who normally inhales their dinner in 5 minutes at TGIFridays, this isn't your place. And it's not appropriate for families, (but then, maybe folks with kids would be happier in the suburbs or Brooklyn). In all, I found it an enjoyable spot, but only for folks with a european frame of mind towards dining. Pros: Fresh tastes, chef's menu, atmosphere Cons: uneven service, overly complex flavors more

It is always great going to this little gem 7/18/2006

This is one of my favorite spots! I have been several times with different friends and always had a great time. The menu changes everytime we go and always has something interesting and inventive on it. The 6 course tasting menu for $45 is a bargain by any standards! The wine list is diverse with several excellent options under $50. the staff is warm and welcoming, combined with the cozy atmosphere it is a refreshing change from the pretentious environments that usually serve this quality food. As the chef is alone in the kitchen, there sometimes can be a wait, but if you like the people you are with and don't have anywhere you need to be it is a great atmosphere for a long, relaxing meal taking in all of the flavors and nicely pacing the 6 courses so you don't get too full and can enjoy the food! I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone, but if you want something different with exceptional quality and a comfortable friendly atmosphere, this place is a must try! Pros: Food is excellent and fresh Cons: Can be a bit of a wait sometimes more

Cursing is the music in this place 6/22/2006

Please don't bring any date nor children because there is bad energy and the chef is cursing loud like he doesn't care if the dinning room hears it. more

Friendly, exceptionally thoughtful staff & chef 6/22/2006

In this tiny, but airy place, I had a memorable birthday dinner. Some of the dishes were exceptional, but what really made the place stand out was the vibe and friendliness of the staff. The table next to us was getting ready to leave, and offered us their unfinished bottle of wine. We started chatting with them, and told them it was my birthday. The server overheard this, and immediately produced four glasses of champagne - for me, my boyfriend, and for the table next to us! He said it was compliments of the chef to celebrate my birthday. Amazing! We did not do the tasting menu, but ordered starters and mains. The cured salmon starter was the standandout, as was the tomato tea consume (a complimentary amuse bouche). The menu and food was more gamey than I had hoped (menu for the night had venison, duck, lamb) - this isn't a disparagement, I just happen to not gravitate towards gamey food. But the night was completely fun and memorable!! more

great overall 6/19/2006

The week's wait for a table was well worth it. The presentation was seamless and steady; we were fawned on by two waitresses who seemed genuinely interested in ensuring the experience was engaging and enjoyable. Each dish on the tasting menu was delicious, including the rich and buttery foie gras, which we were unable to finish due to the surfacing of conscience mid-course (google 'Foie gras: Delicacy of Despair' for more details). Seconds after we permitted our half-eaten fattened goose livers to be whisked away, our waitress materialized, bearing two cold drinks and the chef's profound apologies for the dish - a completely unneccessary but vastly appreciated gesture. The dessert, a mint chocolate mousse, would have been the perfect countermeasure for the summer heat, but we were allowed to linger so long over our courtesy cocktails that by the time we sailed out the door with stomachs pleasingly full, the temperature had fallen drastically and our dinner was a distant but lovely memory. Pros: atmosphere more

Tap water is the best thing on the menu 6/17/2006

My experience at Knife & Fork was one that I will never forget. The nightmare began with the bewildered look on the hostess' face when we asked about our confirmed reservation. ""Huh, um, & um"" was their witty response. Right then and there, I should have known this was a prelude of what's to come. As we waited patiently, the staff assembled our tables. The space that was provided was extremely inadequate. In fact, my friend had to stand up every time staff members needed to pass by in order to perform their duties. Cons: Small portions, overpriced, long wait time more

Good Food, Small Portions 6/15/2006

Space was not particularly impressive but the staff is friendly and the menu selection, while small, does have several good choices. I ordered the foie gras appetizer and the Chilean sea bass and both were very good and had unique tastes, but extremely small portions (set on large plates). Even after an appetizer, entree and dessert (strawberries balsamic), I still left hungry. And at $75 for my dinner, I thought it was a bit of a stretch. Some updated decor could really add to the appeal of this place. The restaurant Euzkadi located next door is a little more of a good time in my opinion. Pros: Food, Menu, Service Cons: Small Portions, Boring Decor more

aviod in general 6/11/2006

While trying to dine at the knife and fork, I could hear the chef cursing at and insulting the wait staff. It was very upsetting and ruined my appetite while trying to eat my food. The staff were very curtious and kind but it was obious they were stressed. The wait for the order to arrive was much too long and the food was not worth the wait. I would only reccomend going there if you want an experiment in observing a high-minded restaurant with a toxic atmosphere. Pros: looks good on the surface level Cons: bad energy more

Daring that Delivers 6/10/2006

A friend of mine chanced upon this place while strolling the East Village. The ambiance looked charming and cozy. Especially loved the finish of the bar, very rustic feel to it. Since it was our first time, we opted for the tasting menu. A real bargain for what it includes ($45!!). Everything from the consomme to the ricotta was cooked to perfection. The marriage of flavors and spices, one would not imagine mixing well together, were excellent combinations. My pallette was no doubt entertained and left me wanting for more. K and F is a great culinary experience. I have been back twice since and the food is consistently top notch. Hurry and make your reservations, I think word has gotten around how good this place is that it's getting harder and harder to get a table. more

A LITTLE GEM 6/9/2006

What a charming, laid back at the same time romantic feel at home kind of place with impeccable food presentation and incredible adventurous combination of flavors..... from the appetizers to the deserts.... and lets not forget the excellent wine list !!!! more

shockingly horrendous 6/8/2006

i just joined citysearch to write this review, because this was the worst dinner i've eaten in my life...the menu looked great, it's a cozy space, and our bottle of rioja was nice, but that's where it ended...each dish got worse and worse until it became a joke at our table...the foie gras appetizer had no taste, the entrees were served on enormous white dishes with no sides, despite the fact the menu described the dishes with side items...the duck breast was charred and tasted like it had been marinating in Robitussin for weeks, the chicken was undercooked and just plain sucked - essentially, it's an ambitious menu that sounds delicious, but the combinations actually don't work at all or are completely tasteless; every dish could have been sent back, and finally the duck was - the chef offered a free dessert, which we took b/c we had wine to finish. expresso machines weren't working, the bathroom door didn't shut all the way or lock, and dishes were smashed twice in the kitchen throughout the night...i feel bad, the service was attentive and its a nice space, but it really was an absolutely horrible meal...looking around the room, it also seemed the people were politely just trying to finish and get out of there more

worst dinner in new york in 10 years 6/7/2006

don't go if you're hungry. it took 90 minutes for us to receive our dinner. the food was overpriced and undercooked. and to top it off, the chef refused to cook the food more thoroughly when we requested he do so. more

Just plain wonderful 5/20/2006

We went rather spontaneously on a Friday night and found a charming, wonderfully-athmosphered room with a long table that had been set for a group and a handful other patrons scattered within..giving us an immediate feel of intimacy and being welcome. Our hostess explained the dishes, recommended the tasting menu which already seemed like a ""bargain"" at under fifty dollars. We were served an exceptional Consommé made w Tomato and Green Tea, a seascallop w pickles, a cured salmon with dill, the ""adventurous"" duck-tongue and octopus salad (which was deliciously refined), a curried skate (my personal favorite) and a lavender rubbed duck breast, which was too fatty for us, but therefore only presented a bit of more labor by cutting it. desert consisted of a Thyma Panacotta...which left me begging for more (still is). All in all a harmonious dining experience, which makes me dream about it 'til next time. Pros: food, atmosphere, location more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Buzzing foodies with a panoply of accents fill the intimate space, which has been designed with cross-Atlantic flair. The kidney-shaped bar and thick wood tables proudly rep the nabe's bohemian history, while the thin, long-stemmed wine glasses and designer cutlery divulge posher tendencies. Finally, beaded candleholders, tall breeze-friendly windows and white stucco walls (with a rounded cutout leading to the kitchen) strike decidedly Mediterranean notes.

    The Food
Irish chef Damien Brassel trained in formidable kitchens across Europe and North America, and his eclectic menu ping-pongs vigorously between old and new world sensibilities. Fresh Greenmarket ingredients co-star in nearly every dish. Zaftig scallops get an earthy accompaniment of tangy citrus-accented couscous. Beef carpaccio nearly melts on the tongue before pointing the way to the tart surprise of its plate-mate, "overnight tomatoes." The showstopper: Tender venison with a gorgeous smear of parsnip puree and a smattering of edible orchid petals.
