Best

We went to Virgilio’s with another couple for their New Year’s Eve winner pairing dinner. I have been to a few wine dinners but this was by far the best. We started with a aperi...

Worst

Service is not very well trained and seemed hurried at times. The food is on the average side, but WAY over priced. Might be worth trying again on a slow night, but I am not...

What a great little place, had a wonderful experience, great food, great service 1/27/2007

My first visit to Virgilio's was wonderful. We had to wait 15 minutes and then our feast began. The owner Virgilio came by and let us know they were making fresh homemade mozzarella as an appetizer. So we ordered that along with, spinach pinwheels, garlic, and the Verde salad. My God in heaven, the fresh mozz came out hot and stringy, they actually make it right before they serve it. The pinwheels were fantastic as were the garlic knots and the Verde salad. Wow and we did not even get dinner yet. Then Virgilio can by with a test pizza, white clam pie, fresh clams, bacon, garlic, onions on a alfredo sauce. Wow again, he said they trying to perfect it. Then came out our pizza margarita and the soprano. The crust, pizza sauce and cheese were the best I have had in Denver. The toppings were generous and fresh. (someone wrote about canned mushrooms, ours were fresh?) We also had some very nice wine that the owner recommended. We ended the night with a cannoli that was the real thing. I had so much fun because the food was so good and they playing Italian opera. The place is small so expect to wait on the weekends.\r \r Pros: homemade mozzerella, garlic knots, pinwheels, best pizza in denver Cons: small, more

Best in town even if the other pizza places write phony reviews 1/25/2007

I just read a review that is so phony you can smell lair or pizza shop owner down the street. I have been going to Virgilio's now for 3 months. This is no chain, just hard working people making the best pizza in town. It is a small place that has become so popular that sometimes they are overwhelmed. I stay away on Friday nights (crazy busy). The service has always been great and the pizza quality is always 1st class. Do not believe a bogus review by some other pizza place trying to make it. Read the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post, 5280, Westword and Citysearch. Virgilio's does not use canned mushrooms? I just had a slice yesterday. On a last note the owner Virgilio the chef Gabriel are awesome people who work harder then anyone I know. Best of luck to them. more

Pretty good but extremely overrated 1/23/2007

I've tried Virgilio's 3 times and each time I was underwhelmed considering the hype it gets. Of the 3 times twice I ordered to go and once I ate in. The time I ate in was the day after Xmas 2006 and the girl attending the counter marked our pizza to-go and forgot about us, the pizza sat in a box while we waited. When the mistake was realized no apology was offered and they just popped the pizza back in the oven for a reheat, not a huge sin since I like my pizza room temp anyway. It was the waiting that annoyed me. Also considering there wasn't much of a crowd, most tables were empty, that the tables next to us were dirty and in need of bussing was a bit of a drag. I know the young girls that attend the counter don't make much money but clean the table when the customers leave sheesh.\r \r My biggest complaint is the canned toppings, who uses canned mushrooms, no freakin way is that ""authentic Italian"" like they boast. However considering the alternatives the pizza is pretty good compared to chain delivery pizza. In my opinion the best pizza in Lakewood is served right across the street at Whole Foods Market. \r \r As far as Virgilio's goes, I'll eat there again as long as I don't have to wait. To fight the crowd on a Fri night and wait in that disorganized line thing they have going on at the pickup counter isn't worth it. But I'll choose Virgilio's over Pizza Hut or the like anyday. \r \r To sum it up with a final comment, it's good not great. Pros: cheap Cons: bad service more

St Louis Pizza? New York is New York, and Virgilio's Tops 1/16/2007

The last review talks about St Louis pizza? What the hell is St Louis pizza? Virgilio's Pizzeria is the pizza not only in Denver by probably this side of the Mississippi. I have been in there maybe 20 times now. The owner Virgilio and the Chef Gabriel have always been there making sure pies are always top notch. Not only is the pizza the best, the garlic knots, calzones, spinach pinwheels, stromboli and pasta's are all great. There is a reason why 5280 magazine gave them top 10 best new restaurant in Denver. I suggest if you want St Louis style pizza go St Louis because you know nothing about great NY Pizza. Pros: Best garlic knots, hard working staff Cons: small, one location more

Service Great, But Pizza really is no better than Tombstone Pizza from the Grocery Store. 1/14/2007

I saw Virgilios was rated so high on CitySearch and has won so many awards. I feel bad saying this, but their pizza is okay, but nothing spectacular. Colorado natives just do not know what good pizza is. \r \r Being from St. Louis - I'm always on the lookout for pizza that can rate as high as many of the mom and pop pizzerias do in St. Louis. Ultra - cracker, thin crust, floury on the bottom with excessively juicy sauce and cheese topped with numerous spices. But here in Denver, I have yet to find anything remotely close to that. All pizza here is thick, doughy crust. Too much bread. And the pizza is too dry! Not enough sauce. Or the sauce is too pasty, not thin enough.\r \r When I saw the ratings and awards on City Search for Virgilios - I went and ordered a Cheese and Mushroom and Tomato Pizza, the pizza is very dry, not juicy at all, the crust is thicker (not cracker thin) (I guess this is what New York style pizza is??? (ick) and all in all, it tasted like a tombstone pizza from Safeway.\r \r I know Virgilios uses very fresh ingredients and I guess this is NY style pizza so maybe this isn't an honest comparison, but coming from St. Louis, where cracker thin, floury crust and super juicy, spicy tasting pizzas is what it is all about, this pizza just left me looking for something better.\r \r On the other hand, the service was great and other people seem to like them. I guess I just despise New York style Pizza. Pros: Inexpensive, Great Service Cons: No thin crust, pizza is very dry, sauce is very pasty, not juicy. more

Great Great Pizza!!! Garlic Knots, Spinach Pinwheels Amazing 1/10/2007

We read about Virgilio's Pizzeria in 5280 Magazine as one of the top 10 best restaurants in Denver. They recommended and we tried the Garlic Knots, Spinach Pinwheels, Mixed Green Salad and the House Favorite Pizza along with the LaRossa beer. What a meal!! The food was amazing the place was jam packed but the service was great. I just love it!! We will be back with more friends. (The place is very nice but small. I suggest going during the week or early on the weekends.)\r Pros: Best Pizza, Garlic Knots, Spinach Pinwheels, HDTV Cons: Small, one location more

Great Pizza, Great Service GLAD It's Around The Corner From My House! 12/29/2006

Virgilio's is AWESOME!! We moved to the Belmar neighborhood about a year ago and found Virgilios shortly after. We try to get there at least every other week now for a take & bake or just have have a glass of wine, appetizers and a chat with the owner Virgilio who is very personable. Being an amature ""foodie"" and wanna be wine expert, it's fun talking to Virgilio about the different wines he tries on his menu. We've tried several different types of pizzas, the garlic knots, spinich pinwheels, and more, everything we've had has been DELICIOUS!!! We never ever order from the chain pizza joints and always try to find a local place near our house with really great pizza, nothing we have tried in Colorado so far compares to Virgilios, in fact I haven't had such good pizza since I lived in Boston near the North End! We HIGHLY reccomend Virgilios, but be warned, they are almost always busy! Pros: Everything is delicious! Cons: Small, always busy more

The sromboli is fantastic 12/8/2006

Virgilio's has been open for business one year and I have had the pleasure to enjoy their fare on several occasions, the location is fantastic located next to the Lakewood Commons park-n-Ride. After a long week it is great to stop in have a glass of wine or beer and watch them prepare the stromboli. The food and atmosphere are great, and the prices are reasonable. I am so pleased they are located near my daily commute, but I would drive out of my way to get their pizza. Pros: Close free parking Cons: limited eating space more

Denver's Hottest and Best New Pizza 11/18/2006

I go everywhere for great pizza, I found Virgilio's about 6 months ago when they were pretty new. I knew that this place was going to be the place for the best pie. I told the owner, in a few months there will be lines out the door because the pizza and food was the best in town. I finally made it back (I live 30 miles away) on Friday night. The place was packed! We waited about 30 minutes to sit. Smelling that pizza and watching fresh pies come out of the oven made me twice as hungry. Maybe that is why it was THE BEST FREAKING PIZZA I have ever had anywhere! If you have not tried this place you are missing out on truely the best pizza in town. Musts, Cheese Pie, Garlic Knots, Spinach Pinwheels, Margertia Pizza Pros: Great Prices, Great Service, Clean Bathrooms Cons: Small, only one more

best meatball grinder in colorado 10/21/2006

Grew up in Mass. and have yet to have a meatball sub in Colorado that compares to back home until now. THis one is probably better than most of those too. Ask to add pepperoni to it, makes it spectacular. The great bread (toasted) and the melted cheese make this sub the bomb. more

Best pizza in the Denver and surrounding areas, You will not be disappointed 10/20/2006

My Grandfather was from Sicily, Italy and he made the best pizza ever. He move the New York City where I grew up as his grandson and know what good pizza taste like. I have tried more pizza places the this town has to offer and found Virgilio's Pizzeria Napoletana as close to New York as you can get without being in New York. The only thing I missing, is the tossing the dough in the air to get the right size. That always impress me on how they can do that. The service is very friendly and prompt and all the food is to die for. I have never been disappointed yet. Virgilio comes out and talks with the customers when he's not preparing food behind the line. He reminds me of what good friendly service is all about. I know you will not be disappointed. Pros: The food is the best Cons: Restaurant is a little small more

best pizza denver 10/15/2006

I grew up in the bronx, most of the pizza in this town is just OK, this one is as close to new york as you can get ,superb. Pros: very friendly, like being among friends, dont miss it! more

Best New York Pizza in Town 10/4/2006

I came by Virgilio's Pizzeria at Festival Italiano in Belmar last week. The line was 45 min for a slice? What gives I said. I asked people who eating was it worth the wait? 100% of the people said yes. So I waited as the help and the owner were working hard to feed the crowd. When I finally made to the front they just received a new batch. I tried the cheese, white with garlic and basil, meat lovers. WOW!!! I tried to talk to Virgilio to find out more info on his awesome pie, but he was way to busy. I finally made it over to the store and had a fresh pie. My God in Heaven!! I finally found pizza in Denver I said to myself. The garlic knots are off the hook, along with the spinach pinwheels. If your a pizza junkie, this is the place for the best pizza in Denver. Pros: Clean, HDTV, Best Pizza Cons: One Location more

Yummy Garlic Knots! 9/1/2006

I was visiting friends last weekend and on my last night we went here... and it was really really good! Their Garlic Knots were absolutely delicious! I usually tend to go for the thick crust pizzas, but I am definitely now a fan of thin crusts! It was a very relaxed atmosphere and I look forward to going there on my next visit! Pros: Garlic knots, pizza, service Cons: Can't think of any more

Best Pizza In Denver By Far!!! Wait till you taste the crust! 8/22/2006

Like most New Yorker's we are always looking for a good pie in Colorado. Look no more, Virgilio's Pizzeria Napoletana in Lakewood is ""THE BOMB"". I cant say enough on how good this pizza is. Wait till you to taste the crust, the cheese, the sauce, WOW! I think they put something in there sauce because I have bad cravings after 3 days without a fix. Try just the cheese first then move up the the Soprano and Dean Martin. Don't forget the Garlic Knots!! Enjoy and say Armando sent you. Pros: Best pie in Denver, calzones, knots Cons: Small place tough to get in now, needs patio that owner says is coming in fall more

Wonderful pizza & meatballs 8/21/2006

I have been there twice. THe food both times was very good but I am still looking for the freindly staff that everyone else raves about. On my first visit the server was not very friendly & on my second visit Virgilio took my order at the cash register & made me feel like I was an inconvience. I will still return because I love the pizza & pasta & the garlic knots are a food group unto thenmselves. more

Good...........but !!!!! UPDATE 8/15/2006

Revisiting......... update........although the food here is very good...... the service flat stinks. 3 times in a row, ""kids"" dont have a clue how its done, and that only reflects in the training. I have nothing against kid servers, but they need to know the basics ! Couples like the salad at the same time. The main dish is not served with or before the salad. People like to eat together.....not sit and watch !!! Train these people. Until that happens, I will only get food to go........Previous review....>>>>>>As a budget ""Food Snob"", I am more delighted every time another one of these wonderful spots crop up. ""Back in the day"" the Mom N' Pops ruled and this is a perfect example of GREAT Specialty Foods in small, out of the way places, making a dramatic come back ! Pros: GREAT PIZZA !!! Just the PIZZA Cons: Busy parking lot. Service needs a lot of work !!!! more

Great to-go 8/10/2006

We ordered a couple pizzas to pick up. We were met with very prompt and friendly service, and the pizzas were excellent. more

Best pizza around, super-friendly staff! 8/5/2006

My husband and I found this place while driving through Lakewood Commons to see what was new. I am so glad we stopped! The pizza is divine - my husband, the purist, swears by their pepperoni. On several trips back, we've tried the pizza, pasta, salad - it's all fantastic! You have to try the garlic knots - the hubby can't seem to share when we go, but a hot dozen will make you contemplate a to-go box before your entree arrives. We can't say enough great things about Virgilio's. Virgilio comes out and talks with the customers when he's not preparing food behind the line. Jackie, our favorite server, is full of life and always good for a laugh. We highly recommend a drive to Lakewood for this restaurant. Even though it's small, it has a heart as big as Italy! Pros: food, clean restaurant, great ambiance more

Best New York style pizza and pasta around. Well worth the drive for take-out or service dinning. 7/25/2006

This is one Pizzeria that you can't pass up!! Virgilio's always has the friendliest service in a classical Italian style dinning room. With having a mouth watering Stone Brick New York style pizza keeping you coming back for more. I also enjoy his incredible pastas, like the Stuffed Shells and Garlic Knots. I can't wait to go back!! See ya there!! Pros: Great New York style pizza, Pastas, Salads more
