Not for groups 1/13/2007

I have wanted to try this place for some time and recently tried to make reservations for twelve people for a friend's birthday since they are supposed to be good for groups, but alas they would only put us in two tables of six instead of together. I suggest you try another place if you have a large group because Steuben's won't work! more

Serves standard American fare but is anything but standard 1/8/2007

I have been to Steubens a few times and each time, I have been impressed. The service was good and the decor was retro-trendy but what stands out most is the food. \r \r We ordered a number of items and shared around the table. I would recommend the fried chicken because it was not too heavily-coated with batter and had some unique herb flavors. The mashed potatoes and biscuits were not necessarily inventive but very tasty. \r \r The lobster roll, while pricey for a sandwich, was wonderful with large chunks of lobster and a simple mixture that really lets the lobster flavor dominate the dish. The chile rellano was different than any that I have had before- with creative spices and a rich red sauce. The mussel appetizer and the green chile were both typical but also very good. \r \r However the cheese-steak sandwich was fantastic. The beef was sliced very thin and the cheese was very creamy. This may be the best cheese-steak sandwich I have had in Denver. The vinegrette salad dressing on the side salad was also worth noting. Lastly, the vanilla cupcakes are great. Simple and clean. They taste like the kind my mother used to make and reminded me of my childhood. \r \r The menu is not outrageously creative but this upscale diner-type of restaurant serves feel-good food at reasonable prices. It is a hip take on classic American comfort food. Pros: Comfort food, decent for kids, retro ambience Cons: Parking, can be crowded more

We love Steuben's! 1/7/2007

We had such a good time at Steuben's, our server was very knowledgeble, from the drinks to the food to where to go listen to music afterwards. \r We drank Sidecars and Gin Rickeys (which is what my parents used to drink)! The food was outstanding. Our server suggested the Rhode Island Calamari. None of us had ever had calamari like this, it was delicious. We also tried the shrimp ceviche and gaspacho. Both of these items, too, were perfect for a warm summer night on the patio, cool and spicy.\r My husband had the shortrib for dinner...WOW! I had the Shrimp Po'Boy, fried shrimp, spicy remoulade...mmm...\r Our friends each had the Pulled Pork Sandwich, which they both raved on.\r We finished with the Truckstop Chocolate Cake, the best chocolate cake ever, and butterscothch pudding. Where can you get homemade buterscotch pudding?\r Shane was our server and did a fantastic job without being intrusive. He cracked jokes and made us feel like old friends.\r Even the manager stopped by to see how everything was!\r I would definately return and tell all of my friends, too! Pros: Food, service and design more

OK...BUT DISAPPOINTED!!!! 1/6/2007

They advertised the GREEN GODDESS dressing from the seasoned chef cooking school and on menu, went and they did not have anymore :( so bummed!!!\r Also only got the inbetween menu, which was a bummer, we have a child so we went early to not bother people and had barely any choices :(\r Stuff was good but limited :(\r Kind of dreary and dark, know they want the old feel, but a little bit overboard in that area, prefer a bright airy feel in any rest. seemed old and depressed kinda, not new and fresh!!! Pros: fr. onion soup-yum... Cons: depressed feel and no gr. goddess they advertised :( more

I just don't get what the buzz is about 1/3/2007

OK, I've eaten here twice. Everyone is acting like this restaurant is GREAT. 5280 Magazine called it one of the town's 10 best. I JUST DON'T GET IT. The emperor has no clothes -- the place is more about style than food, that's for sure. The owners must be paying someone off for the positive reviews! The place is way too pricey -- you really should get a better meal for the prices they are charging. The drinks are tiny and incredibly expensive. My well cocktail which might have cost $4-5 somewhere else was $8 here and VERY TINY. A basic sandwich is $15 or more. Although the staff is very nice and responsive, honestly, the only reason to go here is if you enjoy being in a trendy place. And even if that's your goal, you could do a lot better at just about any place along Broadway. Pros: Friendly staff, cool room. Cons: Prices, quality of food, over-hyped. more

Awesome food, awesome staff! 12/3/2006

Wow, I am glad I live close enough to be a regular at this restaurant! The hosts know me and my friends by name (the redhead one is awesome, she knows our favorite table and tries her best to give it to us, she always jokes around with me and my buddies while we are waiting to be sat, and last night she nearly made me choke I was laughing so hard at one of her witty comments! ).... The guy with the light brown hair hair is also hilarious and knows exactly were we like to sit.The bartenders are onto the game and are quick. Our usual waitress, Julie, is the queen of waitressing. Very knowledgable about the menu and very personable! The other waiters we have had are Randy, Alissa, Greg, and Sean, who all are so friendly, fast, knowledgable, and real - they aren't your typical hoity-toity ""I get paid nothing and hate my job"" waiters! Definatly engage your waiter in a conversation, Steuben's must hire on personality and thats what makes this restaurant awesome. I am pretty sure there is not a bad person anywhere on staff.\r \r The food is also top notch. The lobster roll is by far my favorite menu item, followed by the chicago dog and the fried chicken. I dont know what yall are complaning about (my god, if something is wrong, send your food back! It happens!) because the flavors of simple comfort food Steuben's provides is amazing. Brunch is so good, the perfect hangover breakfast (except there are a lot of children on brunch mornings). And the chocolate cake is enough to bring tears to my eyes. A+ for Denver's best restaurant! Pros: The staff personality and the food! Cons: Nothing really, a lot of kids for brunch! more

My favorite joint! 12/2/2006

i'm a regular at steuben's (i'm addicted and find myself there at least 3 times a week). i love the bar, the dining room and takeout (curbside when i'm felling lazy or want to drive up in sweat pants)! i've been going to steuben's since they opened last year and they don't have a server or bartender that i don't know by name or who doesn't know me by mine, so when i read the review by the person who had negative feelings about the service i could only wonder what could have gone wrong!?! steuben's floor staff is remarkable, because each server, bartender and manager that you may interact with brings a piece of their personality with them to work with them. not like most restaurants where your server interacts with you by corporate standards or answers your questions by rote! i've even seen chefs make table visits at steubens. i can only imagine if a person had such an ""off"" experience that it was the rarest of fluke or perhaps a misunderstanding because i have never heard from anyone i've turned on to steuben's even remotely a similar incident, and i know i haven't had one. there are a few servers and bartenders with dry senses of humor, which i suppose to a newcomer may seem sarcastic but they are all so good natured i'm certain it is all in good fun. as a regular who loves, loves, LOVES steuben's i beg you to try again. because the food is fantastic but the service is what i go back for time and again! Pros: awesome people, great food, lots of fun Cons: none! more

Great looking restaurant with poor foog 11/18/2006

When I first walked into Steuben's, I was so excited. Here was a hip restaurant on now trendy Colfax with an interesting spin on Americana food. We ordered mostly appetizers so that we could sample as much of the menu as possible. After tasting the wings, ribs, corn, black bean soup, fried chicken and cupcake, I have to say that all were uninspired and not particularly good. The wings and ribs were not particularly flavorful, the soup tasted as if a cup of salt had been added to it, the fried chicken was soggy and greasy and the cupcake tasted store bought. It saddens me to think that most of the reviewers think this restaurant has good food. I would not return and recommend others to avoid eating here. more

even my mine month old had a good time! 10/22/2006

my father, daughter and i decided to try out steubens on a cold and rainy tuesday night after a long grumpy day of packing up boxes. we hadn't planned to visit steubens ahead of time, we just ended up there, but i plan on planning many more visits in the future. my nine month old had been fussy all day, not wanting to take in anything but her bottle, but she couldn't get enough of the deviled eggs! i had the nightly special, meatloaf, and left my plate spottless embarassingly enough. my father and i split the pecan pie for desert and squabbled over who got to eat the last bite. it was a lovely experience. the combination of the food and the atmosphere and the lovely service we recieved warmed us up. the three of laughed the entire time. i can't wait to share it with my friends. Pros: family friendly Cons: parking lot a appreciated, but too small more

Slow service, cold food, should've gone to KFC 10/17/2006

I've been to Steuben's several times and it was one of my favorite restaurants. But it is on a steady decline. My first couple times there were excellent; but the next two were awful! In one instance, my food came out cold (the cheese in my chile relleno was unmelted) and my boyfriend's fried chicken and mash potatoes looked and tasted like something from KFC, at best. We ordered apple pie for desert and it was luke warm in some parts cold in others! We hoped it was a fluke but the next time was no better than the one before. We were sad to drop this one off the list of our favs. bye steubens! Pros: great retro atmosphere Cons: food may have been left over from the 60s more

Great Lunch 10/17/2006

I went here yesterday with my boss and I was AMAZED. I had the Deviled eggs, Grilled Cheese, and a tomato soup. What a treat!!!!!\r more

Best Bloody Mary in Denver 10/16/2006

Steuben's is a welcome addition to my Uptown neighborhood (one which still featured the long-abandoned hull of Daunte Bichette's restaurant until recently). To me, the highlight is weekend brunch. There are certainly better ones in the Denver Metro area (The Kitchen and Lucille's in Boulder come to mind), but none are as comforting or convenient to me. There is nowhere on the breakfast menu one can go wrong, but the Bloody Marys are what I look forward to the most. more

heartfelt, hearty and heartening 9/26/2006

\r i've visited steuben's on several different occasions and am glad to report that it's both classy and classic. i've felt comfortable dining out here in a tee-shirt and jeans as well as when all dolled up for a proper night out on the town. \r the food is perfect in it's simplicity and presentation, the staff is lighthearted and professional and the atmosphere is sleek and timeless. \r 'they' seem to have thought of everything; a seperate gluten allergy menu for my sister visiting from out of town was new and noticed and appreciated. \r i recommend this place for those weekenders who are out to relax and have a good time without any time constraints. on busy nights you can expect to wait about half an hour for a table and the wait for food might be equivalent. my friends and i have found the 1940's inspired cocktail menu, the tatooed cuties at the bar and the bustling servers to be a lovely distraction inbetween. the dinner menu alone has sparked quite a few entertaining conversations about whose mom made the best meatloaf to first kisses and more.\r i hope you find this sparkley and new uptown venture to be as befitting of it's image and mission as i have.\r \r hints: we've always asked our server what they last ordered to eat here and have never been disappointed with their indirect recommendation. trust us, try it!\r \r Pros: a down home menu (no matter where in the US you may call 'home) Cons: due to popularity you might have to wait a while for a table and the food more

Great Food, Great People 9/21/2006

My wife and I have been to Steubens many times over the past few months, we've tried almost everything on the menu and have never been dissapointed. One of the many reasons that it has become our favorite restaurant is because of the warm, down to earth service we always receive. They probably have the most interesting (and tattooed) staff in Denver, all of them knowledgeable about the food, but they personalize their service as well. Sean and Joe behind the bar are great! We love to dine at the bar when they are there (many tattoos and many great stories). Randy and Laura are two of our favorite servers...ask Randy about his woodworking (he'll go on forever). The food, the Food, The food. I love the Etoufee, my wife is partial to the Tuesday Meatloaf (please put it on the regular menu). The butterscotch pudding and cupcakes are tasty desserts...and brunch is great as well. Any negatives? Free parking is sometimes difficult to find on weekend nights. Pros: All of the above Cons: Parking can be tough more

awesome service, awesome food! 9/16/2006

I'm guessing the reviewer jengrace has never worked in the restaurant industry by her judgement of service! I've been to Steuben's several times and when our server is taking a ""long time,"" I see him/her running around to other tables making sure everything is okay and taking care of business, not just standing around! They are working hard to take care of everyone, including your table. Understand that in a busy restaurant like this, they are not slacking off, they are trying to take care of several tables at once - especially on the patio, which is sat almost all at once!\r \r I find the service awesome - the servers are so helpful and have personality! The hosts are a pretty sight to the eyes, the bussers are prompt and courteous, and the barstaff is fabulous too! The food is awesome, to say it lightly. The Monte Cristo is one of the best in the city, and the Maine Lobster Roll cannot even be described in words. Mmm. You have to try this - but definatly make reservations for a larger party! Seating up front by 17th ave is my favorite, but every single place I've sat is perfectly comfortable. Pros: Service, food, music Cons: none! more

Decline Nothing! 9/14/2006

While I agree that Steubens is not flawless, I would hardly say that Steubens is on the decline. I have been in many times since my last review...I think that the only things that I have yet to try are some of the salads, and nightly specials. Guess what? I've ordered and received a cold relleno. Guess what? I sent it back! The waitress was apologetic, and more than happy to ask the kitchen to nuke it for me...Guess what ? The kitchen redid the entire dish...start to finish, piping hot and perfect. A server placed it in front of me, and sent apologies from the chef. The next time I came in, on a packed Friday night, my date and I waited for a table for about 45 minutes. We were starving. When we finally sat, our server could tell that we were a little edgy...we were quoted about 20 to 30 minutes you see. The waiter brought out some deviled eggs on the house...something to eat, and an apology for the misqoute. Isn't that what it's all about? A neighborhood joint that is not flawless, but strives to make people happy? A place that values it's customers, and one way or the other shows it? At any rate...the food continues to be outstanding, while the customer service is far and away the most comforting, and kind hearted in this city. Keep it up Steubens! Pros: food, decor, service Cons: it does get very busy more

I love this place! 9/14/2006

I live in the same neighborhood as Steuben's and go there all the time. I love how cool and comfortable it is inside and the staff is always great. My favorite is the Tuesday night meatloaf, you have to try it! more

love it! 9/13/2006

Steuben's is a great addition to the 17th Ave area. The food is great! Service is fun, and there is no over the top 'this and that'. They don't have 20 different types of flavored vodka. They don't have a large and confusing wine list, they don't serve every beer under the sun, but what they do have is straight forward, great, and perfect for the price. Although people keep trying to label it a diner, and yes there was some diner influences in the design, this is not a diner! If you want a diner, and pay diner prices (although this place is not expensive, name some places that serve the same quality for close to the same prices) I recommend Pete's kitchen, Mama's or my favorite (although not in the same neighborhood) Breakfast King.\r Steuben's brunch is the bomb too! Pros: hollindaise! nightly specials. service! Cons: no hollindaise during the week more

Horrible Service 9/10/2006

I went to Stueben's for brunch yesterday with high expectations. It took forever to put in our order. Then we didnt see him again until we were finished eating. It took 15 minutes to get our check, then our server never showed up to give us change, so we had to get change from the bar. And, it wasnt busy at all. The food was decent at best. I had the Monte Cristo with fries, and my friend had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were the worst things I have ever tasted in my life! We decided not to complain because we didnt want to be ""those people"", but looking back I wish we would have. Also, it was overpriced. $11 for a sandwich that was small and some fries? Pros: Ambience, Patio, Parking Cons: Service, Food more

Great place, great food, great atmosphere 8/11/2006

Wow! I went to Steuben's the other night with a group of friends and we had such a great time! We tried the raspberry lime rickey at the suggestion of our server and followed with quite a few more! We had a few appetizers to share including the crab cakes which were amazing, the mussels, which were awesome, and the habenero honey fried corn, which sounds kind of crazy but is actually the most perfect pairing of sweet and spicy! Our entrees were terrific as well. Their fried chicken is outstanding, the mac and cheese as well, and the lobster roll......all I can say about that is WOW! And I can see why their ""wacky apple"" dessert won the best dessert in Denver a few years back at their sister restaurant, Vesta, it's that great! The decor is a really cool, funky retro design that totally rocks and their patio is a great place to hang out on a nice summer evening with friends. And if all this wasn't great enough, they have a section of the restaurant dedicated to takeout, which I'm dying to check out. In fact, our server mentioned they do curb-side delivery out of the takeout area, with designated 5 minute parking set aside out front on 17th! I for one say welcome to the neighborhood Steuben's.....I know I'll be cooking less! Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Great Food more
