Fantastic comfort food with a retro scene! 7/29/2007

I have such a hard time going here without ordering the fried chicken! I consider myself to have a sophisticated palate but the good home cooking here is hard to resist! \r \r Just about everything we have ordered here has been outstanding! The fried chicken is to die for, the mac and cheese is just like my grandmother makes, and the biscuits and gravy tops it off. If you are looking for something a little lighter you can order an awesome trout almondine or baked chicken. \r \r the atmosphere is a charming retro diner. The building used to be a garage so the entire street front can be opened up during good weather. The little porch outside is a great place to dine on a nice day also. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the steak and that was mainly because it was so thin they couldn't cook it as rare as I like it even after 2 tries. The steak was a daily special and I noticed they had taken it off the menu last time I was there. \r \r We have eaten here a half dozen times and every experience has been great! Even when my steak was overcooked they had no objection to bringing me a new one. I have seen a few reviews about the price but we have never found our meal to be expensive. Fantastic restaurant right downtown, give it a try! Pros: Fantastic food! Cons: Parking is limited but there are parking lots for a small fee. more

An Amazing Friday Night! 7/21/2007

It is difficult for me to dine out. Having a pretty bad gluten allergy kind of makes me hesitant to put my health in other people?s hands. But last evening a friend of mine pleaded with me to join him for a late dinner to celebrate his promotion. He suggested Steubens. I had never heard of the place before and when I walked in I instantly liked the place. The place has a chic design and pulls it off without being too ?young? feeling. The menu is awesome too -- all down-home good ol? American grub. Probably the best part of the night was our service though. When I started inquiring about which dishes might be gluten-free, my server actually took my menu away from me (which seemed weird at first) and returned with a gluten-free menu. He explained that the chef created allergy-free menus for nearly ten different common allergies. This really impressed me. And the rest of the night went on like this. The patio was lovely, the food unbelievable (try the skirt steak!), and the service impeccable. It seems that there is finally a place in Denver that knows that dinner is more then just food and service is more than just a full glass of water. Pros: The patio, the food, the service Cons: Drinks are okay priced, but come in small glasses with lots of ice. more

Good food, so-so service 7/12/2007

Having just moved to Denver, my friends recommended Steuben's as a great place to get a drink and some good food. Stopped in for some appetizers and a few drinks and was generally treated like an alien.\r \r When we asked for a table, mentioned we were there for the beans (which came highly recommended), we were practically scoffed at and given rude, bewildered looks. Seated near the back, our server continued to talk down to us and treat us as if we had the plague the entire time. From the sarcastic tone of voice, rude looks, and sideways glances from across the restaurant, I've never felt more unwelcome in any place before. If we'd merely occupied a table for a side dish or two and spent an undue amount of time there I could understand, but we ran up a fairly good check, especially for a slow afternoon.\r \r Despite the service, the food was quite good. A couple things really stood out: the smoky pork and beans are some of the best I've had; the fries were crisp and tasty, along the lines of good pomme frites, especially with a side of gravy. \r \r Drinks were interesting and, in some cases, original. Try the Cherry Cola.\r \r Would I recommend it to other people new to the area? No, probably not, unless there was nowhere else to go. Pros: Good food, good drinks, good music and noise levels Cons: Rude server(s) more

Not too shabby 5/26/2007

We went here on a whim and were surprised there was no wait. As others have mentioned, the parking situation is not too good. The menu is very unique, which I liked. Although, there is no trend to their food. It's almost as if you've raided someone's pantry, and you make dinner with what they have. The fries as an appetizer are awesome. I had the etouffee, which was fair. The root beer float is great, one because they actually have one, and two because it comes with premium root beer. Service was pretty good, although it became difficult to keep our water glasses full. I would return. Pros: Unique menu, great root beer float Cons: Parking, pricey for size of portions more

lobster rolls; happy they are back!!! 5/24/2007

I don't mean to cause a fight, but the last review was WAY OFF!!! Lets break this down...I went to Marczyx, the great grocery store in my neighborhood and a block down from Steuben's, sells live Maine Lobsters for $13 a pound. I asked how much actual meat you get out of a one pound lobster and they told me MAYBE 4 oz. On my last visit to Steuben's, I asked and they get in 1 and 1/4 pound lobsters to make the lobster rolls and put 4 to 5 oz of meat in them. Lets do the math... 1 and 1/4 pound lobster is around $17.60. I also know that Steuben's has to import in the correct roll from the eastcoast (anyone who knows, knows you have to get the right roll or it just lobster on a hot dog bun). I'm no restaurant person, but I can guess that is not cheap to do, we'll say a dollar a bun. Now someone has to cook, and de-shell those lobsters, I know that is not cheap, we'll say 15 minutes of time and effort at $8 an hour, so that $2.10. Lets add that up; 17.60 + 1.00 + 2.10 = $20.70. That dose not include the sauce they put on it or ANY sort of profit. Basically, they are not making any money to serve you the only good lobster dish in Colorado (in my opinion). The menu price of the lobster roll is $18 and the fries which are al carte are $3. This place is the best and I am very excited to have the lobster roll back after the management took it off because the price for lobsters was way to high, but I still would have paid more a this wonderful taste of the east coast. Pros: Lobster Rolls Cons: colorados cold weather so I can not sit outside all the time more

Good food but a ripoff 5/17/2007

The food and service was good. However $21 for a TINY lobster roll and fries, come on. This place is way overrated, overhyped and overpriced. Pros: Food, Service, Simple Cons: Small portions, Overpriced more

i great addition to the hood 5/10/2007

I disagree with uncledave 100%. Both Steubens as well as Vesta are great. Like every restaurant it has its ups and downs but what else do you expect from a place that has been open for less than a year. The food is great and done soild. The wine glasses.... oh well request a regular one, you can see them lined up behind the bar. I go to steubens pretty often and I have always left happy (and a little full). I recommend the place to everyone I talk to. Not just for the scene or its vibe but for the food. I only wish I got to Vesta more often. Pros: happy hour, prices, hot chicks Cons: ? more

ok sometimes 5/10/2007

Ok, I've been here several times. Only once was my idea. After that I was dragged along kicking and screaming by people who think this is the greatest place in town. Well, I agree with a lot of other reviewers who don't get it. I have never had a meal that was anything better than just ok and several that had to be sent back - nothing like ice cold mashed potatoes and glue gravy. Service can be really iffy when they're busy, and the prices are certainly not like the ""diner"" they're supposed to be. I'm also in the camp of not wanting my wine served in a kid's juice glass. Probably should have known better than ordering a bottle of wine in a place like this anyway - shame on me. This place, like the owners' other restaurant Vesta Dipping Grill, seems to survive on their ""cool/hip"" vibe. It sure as heck isn't the food at either place. more

Yummy fried chicken 4/14/2007

Steuben's has some rockin' fried chicken and the Eggs Benedict is good for brunch- also check out the fried corn on the cob - YUM! Great atmosphere and service. The patio is large and heated, too. Pros: Fried chicken, drinks, ambience Cons: Parking can be tricky if the lot is full more

Awesome food experience 4/2/2007

I had heard a lot of good things about Steuben's but my husband and I live in the 'burbs and just don't make it downtown too often, however we recently went downtown on a Friday morning for business and decided to check out Steuben's and I' m so glad we did!!! The food is fantastic and I love the retro diner feel. We were seated immediately and we were served promptly and the server was very friendly and attentive. I had the pulled pork sandwich (Yum!) and fries and my husband had the fried chicken which I tasted. The food was excellent. I dipped my fries in his gravy, to die for!!! You can order gravy fries as an appetizer but we chose the deviled eggs and they were delicious!!! This is comfort food to the max!!! I have not been there in the evening but I am hoping to come back for dinner sometime in the near future. The only downside was I had a Mimosa and it was pretty expensive for the size of the drink. Also I can see where parking could be a major issue here. We got a parking place just fine, but it wasn't that busy when we got there. When we left the parking lot was full. Otherwise, I hope Steuben's will be around for a long time to come. It is awesome! Pros: Awesome comfort food, great ambience, attentive waitstaff Cons: Parking and drinks a little pricey more

great appetizers 4/1/2007

My boyfriend and I went here for drinks late one night and it was very nice. It just has a great feel to it and the sevice was wonderful! We ended up getting some appetizers which were in very large portions so we even had enough to bring some home for our little pugsly. Pros: Serve food until 11 more

First time was not the charm..maybe the second will be?!?!?!?!?! 3/28/2007

I arrived first out of the three of us and was sat right away in a back booth. It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to arrive to ask me if I wanted a beverage. After my other girlfriends arrived the service improved. She went through the whole menu while we fired questions. Very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us personal favorites of hers. We ordered the fried corn appetizer which was good, but should have come with four limes for each peice of corn. Deviled eggs were okay, a little to creamy for our liking. We split the wedge salad which was great-all wedge salad are the same though no matter where you go. Vegetarian chile entree was great; tons of flavor and spice for a veggie dish. Pan Roast Chicken was okay. There was a lot of broth surounding the mash potatoes that tasted like they came from a box. The chicken was very moist which was good..veggies were overcooked. Beef Brisket entree didn't have a lot of flavor. Beans and coleslaw were good. Could have used more sauce on the brisket meat. Cupcake's were good but the icing was pretty hard and tasted like it came from Safeway..maybe try putting the icing on fresh when they are ordered??? Please add Peanut butter milkshakes and we will come all the time :) This place was packed on a Tuesday night at 7...they must be doing something right. We will try again when the weather is warmer so we can sit outside on the patio. more

all good schtuff 3/20/2007

my husband and i were told about this place by a friend of ours who is a personal chef so we went expecting the best and it was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. my husband ordered the ciopinno (plenty of seafood) and i ordered the fried chicken which were both splendid (and i had plenty of chicken to take home). our server (allisa?) was very friendly and knowledgeable, it was a packed thursday night but she did not rush us. being from the restaurant industry myself i understand how it can get! the hostess was personable and chatted it up with us to see how everything was (dimple pierced, glasses?) the energy from the staff was great, we will definitely be back soon for lunch and drinks at the bar next! more

Why do I keep going back? It's still the same 3/12/2007

I asked for a real wine glass instead of the baby glasses. It took 5 minutes for the bartender to begrudgingly dust them, pass it through the dishwasher, and bring em to us --warm.\r \r The server was eternally on break, and as always, the busser was amazing! The hostesses are super sweet, too. Cheers to the support staff, the servers seem bored & preoccuppied.\r \r Pros: Neighborhood Cons: disenchanted service more

Listen to D' Jesus 3/12/2007

Listen to D' Jesus, this place is HOLY! Holy cow! Holy s@#t! Holy, don't touch my gravy fries or the wrath of God will come down from the heavens and hail upon you! I cannot get enough of this place. I sit at the bar a lot and Mark and Joe are the best, and they have a new cute blond bartender that I have been to shy to ask her name. The food is off the charts! I grew up all over the place (army brat) and they have something from every where I lived; green chili cheeseburgers (new mexico), lobster rolls (new england/maine), spaghetti and meatballs (everywhere!). If you haven't been, try it and maybe you'll run into D' Jesus! Pros: Bartenders are great! Cons: need more female bartenders more

Not All That and a Bag of Chips 3/5/2007

Okay- so you hear from dozens of reviewers and friends of friends that this is THE new great place for brunch- I don't see why- The service was okay- but not anything spectacular. The mimosa was overpriced and small compared to its cost. The eggs benedict were nice, but the bacon was undercooked. The potato pancakes were good, but again, nothing to rave about ... The ambience left me flat, but hey, maybe for a 4 star cost I would like a 4 star meal, service and a cloth napkin.... It just didn't impress me - maybe dinner is better... Cons: ambience more

Love Steuben's! 2/22/2007

I have been to Steuben's for brunch, lunch and dinner (multiple times!) Great tasting food, especially the Maine Lobster Roll and Philly Cheesesteak. Great atmosphere and service every time. It looks like they recently expanded their menu, and I can't wait to go try some of the new items. Great outdoor patio area when the weather is nice, cozy inside when it's not. Highly recommended! Pros: Food, drinks, service, scene Cons: Parking (to be expected at that location) more

Best relaxing meal in denver. Lively and tasty! 2/15/2007

If you want one ot the tastiest dishes in town, with rich, profound yet subtle flavor profiles, try the Lamb Shank. For something delicious but not as heavy, the Spaghetti and Meatballs will negate childhood memories of homecooked pasta with it's perfect red sauce. Try it with Old Style. \r Steuben's has a great selection of simple, blue collar beers as well as more nuanced wine pairings. \r Mac and Cheese is baked in a way you have to try to imagine. Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup, Cheesteak, Cheeseburgers, Fried Cheese and Fries in a can are all the best in town. \r And Tarrantino wishes that he could have ripped this place off for it's decor for use in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Despite the fact that Steuben's has only been open for eight months, it feels like generations of good times have seeped into the wood panelled floors and formica floor tiles. You can see your reflection in the chrome adorning every corner. Pros: Great Ambience, Kid Friendly, and Perfect Food. Cons: You might have to wait a little on a Saturday night, as this is the place to be. But Step right up to the leather trimmed bar. more

Over-rated, Overpriced 2/14/2007

What a let down. After reading roughly a million reviews about what a fantastic place this was (5280 included), I now no longer believe any of the reviewers in this town. They went on about the food and service. I disagree with everything but the ambiance. Here's my lsit of thoughts on the place:\r 1. SErvice: although the service was good, I saw no reason to have a lunch that took and hour and half. We waited almost 30 minutes for our food after we ordered it.\r 2. Prices: although the list here is for low prices, but good eats - I felt nickeled and dimed. I expect a diner sandwich to come with a side of cottage cheese, fires, etc. Instead I paid $9 for just a sandwich. In order to have anything other than jsut your average sized sandwich, you need to pay for a side as well, which is at least another $3. My friend ordered the jambalaya, and recieved what was essentially a bowl of soup with a piece of bread for $12-13.\r 3. Taste: The food itself was decent, but nothing you can't get anywhere else for a couple dollars less, or decently sized for the price.\r 4. Ambiance: the ambiance was nice, trendy but at the same time classic diner. I enjoyed that\r 5. Menu: the menu was short and to the point. we kept asking questions about what was meant by ""green chili burger"", or the entree sized ""mac and cheese"". If you have any dietery concerns - EXPECT that you need to ask questions. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Price, Food more

A great place 2/5/2007

I certainly enjoyed this place as much as I was expecting. The food was wonderful, I had the lobster sandwich and my friend had the BBQ sandwich and they were both very good. I recommend the shoestring fries, they were great. I loved the atmosphere in the place, the decoration was very cool. We had great service that never left a glass empty or a want in the world. Overall a very positive experience. Pros: food, service Cons: small parking lot more
