There is usually a long wait, but it is well worth it. Simple as that.

Shively Animal Hospital 7/21/2011

Thank Goodness someone recommended Shivelyl Animal Hospital to me. I took my kitten to be spayed at Dr Davis on Preston Hwy and was quoted a price of $365 and maybe more depending on what he found when he did surgery they were insinuating was something wrong with my kitten by telling me she had fluid in her uterus and they were not sure why it was there I ask if they could just drain the fluid since they were taking it out anyway and was told Oh no it might be malignant!.I told them I could not afford the $365+. They had already given her her shots and charged me for an office visit which was a total of $60 dollars.I paid this and took her to Shively and was charged $70 total. this included the first visit and surgery, her staying overnight and her stitches removed. Shively did not mention any fluid or insinuate anything was wrong with her .Needless to say, I will never take my animals anywhere else. The price can't be beat. There is a wait but it is well worth it. I believe they are honest and trustworthy. more

Shively is the best by far! 7/16/2011

I have gone to Shively Animal Clinic for over 30 years. Even when I moved to the east end of Louisville, heck .. even when I moved to Central Indiana...I still continued to take my pets to Shively. They have saved several of my dogs that other vets could not even diagnose. Yes, the place is busy. It's definitely not a spa type atmosphere... But stop to consider why it is so busy!! Because so many people know they are the best in town. That is why they take care of all of the Greyhound rescue dogs and all dogs who are part of the Metro Louisville Police force. They will even take in wild animals who have been injured or abandoned for no charge. I took a nest of baby birds that had fallen out a tree several summers ago and they took them right in. They take many 'messy' cases that other vets will not touch. So..if you are looking for calm, quiet atmosphere where everything is automated, you may look elsewhere. But if you are looking for the best medical care for your pet..go more

Worst Vet... 7/7/2011

Do not take your pets to this place. You will get nothing but disrespected while here. This place is so slow and take hours to be seen. When you finally do see a vet they are usually nasty to you and quick to get things done without even listening to you. Dr. Mary Jane is the worst. She is also VERY VERY rude and seems to be like that to her employees as well. Would not suggest going here unless the father Dr. Fuchs takes care of you. However I dont think he is even in the office anymore. more

Never again. 6/19/2011

Shively Animal Clinc is not a place I would recommend to anyone. In a nutshell I called ahead to see if I needed to sign in and come back when they were close to seeing me. My 2 puppies needed an allergy shot and or rabies shot. The man on the phone said to come in now with my puppies because they were very slow and I should not have a long wait. This was this past friday. I was at the clinic quickly. I sat there for an hour and 45 minutes for a walk back but numerous people with my similar situation and a walk back were seen quickly. That was the first problem. Secondly, the Dr. gave my pets some allergy pills for my pets in a thin paper envelope. The envelope accidently was touched by a puppy wipe . By the time I noticed this I was at home which was 15 minutes after leaving the clinic. I called the clinic and explained my situation and asked could I get theTemaril P pills replaced because they had dissovled. The lady asked Dr. Mary Jane could they replace them and she said she would replace them but I had to pay for them. I explained about the thin package and etc. The lady told me I could have asked for a plastic bottle. I informed her I had never been in this situation before as I am not a doctor or a pharmacist because as a human all of my presciptions have come in bottles or individual sealed packs for protection. She talked to the Dr. again. The Dr. said they did not give them to me wet. The lady on the phone said they put a note in my chart to always put pills in a plastic bottle from this point. Anyway, I went back to the clinic the next day with the envelope and the pill powder/residue in a plastice baggie and once again I asked could I talk to a supervisor. Again one of the front desk workers went to talk to Dr. Mary Jane and I was told nobody else had that problem, which I highly doubt. The worker came back with 20 pills and I had to pay $15.00. When I got home I noticed a difference in the pill prices as I was billed 30 dollars for the pills on my first visit. I called the clinic asked about the price difference and they said I was given 40 pills the first time. I explained they were wrong the doctor gave me 10 pills for each puppy and placed all 20 of them in an envelope and he wrote 20 on the evelope. Again this Dr. Mary Jane whom I have never seen or talked with face to face said she called the Dr who saw my puppies and he said he gave me 40 although he speciafically wrote 20 on the envelope. I said even though he wrote 20 on the envelpoe with no directions at all. She said they had to go with what the Dr. said, so now I am telling a lie. In short I think Shively Animal Clinic could have done a much better job at the prescription process, they are supposed to be the experts not me. Then they talked to me as if I had stole something from them. My family has been taking our pets there for the last 20 years are more and I thought since this was the only incident that has been a problem that they would work with the customer. If 30 or 15 dollars is worth losing a long time client then this is not a place I want to patronize. I just feel sorry for the people who do not have much of an option due to transportation issues etc. I tried to talk to the clinic in a civil matter but this Dr. Mary Jane was very rude and I think she can be more respectful in her responses to people and she needs to teach her staff some better procedures so that these uneccesary things do not happen. more

I honestly cannot understand how anyone can willing take their animals here 2/17/2011

I went to this vet for a year per a recommendation and it was the worst experience I have ever had with a vet. In my years time taking my pets to Shively I never encountered a single courteous Dr. or employee. Everyone is extremely stuck up and incredibly rude. I have worked with animals, in rescue and clinical settings, for a number of years so I have amassed a decent amount of knowledge so for the most part when I say something I know what I'm talking about and I won't say anything unless I'm confident in what I'm saying.\r I finally stopped going to Shively on the day I brought a rescue dog there for vaccinations and a general check up. When asked what my dog was eating I told them Orijen which is a high protein, grain free dog food that isn't packed full of the fillers, preservatives, carcinogens and fatty substances that most dog foods like Iams, Purina, Science Diet, etc are. When I explained it has been through my own personal study and experience that dogs respond better to grai more

DO NOT WORK FOR OR TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE PART 2 2/17/2011

One night I had to bring in my dog after hours for an emergency. Unfortunately I was stuck with Dr. Mary Jane who gave my dog sub par care at best and was extremely rude and unhelpful. That night when she came in she brought in her younger brother who is quite clearly mentally disabled (possibly Down Syndrome) and I heard her tell him to shut the f*** and stop being a dumba**. Then proceeded to same some other hushed things to the young man. The tone of her voice and her entire manner was disgusting. I couldn't believe she would talk to her own family that way especially a family member who clearly has special needs and considerations. \r \r When I spoke to my friend about it she said it wasn't uncommon for Dr. Mary Jane to speak to him this way and it's common knowledge in the clinic the Fuchs parents have said they wish this mentally disabled son would have died instead of their other son, which is a horrible thing to say in my opinion. \r \r If this woman (and possibly the other sibling more

DO NOT EVER WORK AT OR TAKE YOUR ANIMALS TO THIS CLINIC! 2/17/2011

One of the most unorganized and unprofessional places I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. They have no computer system in which they can accurately keep and maintain patient files. They do not accept care credit or any type of card for that matter. They are unorganized. Employees run to and fro, running into each other, knocking things other. Their waiting room is too small. The clinic constantly smells and considering they spend hours cleaning at night it should not smell as badly as it does. The front desk stuff is completely rude and it's quite apparent they hate their job and do not care for your animal or to even be there. Everyone I've come in contact with just looks and seems absolutely miserable. \r I started bringing my pets there nearly three years ago because a friend of mine had acquired a tech position there. I expected a wait and it was quite long (nearly 4 hours) but the overall care given by Dr. Heather(who no longer works for this company) was outstanding. N more

If you love your pet stay away from Shively Animal Clinic 12/31/2010

Shively Animal Clinic is a joke...they have RUDE, RUDE, RUDE biotches that work at the front desk (Becky)!!!!! My dog has been going their for 11 1/2 years (11 1/2 years too long)! Keeps having the same problem over and over with his ear...last surgery he had there was on November 10, 2010...once again another hematoma on same ear that they had worked on before! I was told when I picked him up after surgery that all went well, he would need to come back in a few days to have ear checked and bandage changed and that he (my dog) had about 40 stitches in his ear and they would come out theirselves! My husband took Tye (dog) back as told we needed to do to have ear checked and bandage changed! Tye saw Dr. Mary Jane (which by the way I think she smokes to much Mary Jane :) and she said ear looked great re-bandaged ear gave him more meds said stitches would come out on own and that Tye was good to go! 12/30/10 I realize Tye not only has another hematoma but also still has stitches in his ear more

Best Vet care, by far, I have ever had 12/30/2010

I love Shively Animal Clinic! While I am never thrilled with the wait, I know it is worth the wait in both quality of care and finances. As the owner of 4 older dogs, there is no way I could afford to keep my eldest(18 + y/o) if I were visiting a traditional vet. His mind, spunk, general health and playfulness are all still very evident, though his older body is giving out on him. I absolutely could not keep his aches and pains manageable were it not for Shively and there affordability.\r \r As far as care and compassion, they are top notch! After every visit I get a call a day or two later to see how my baby(ies) is doing. They know and understand that our pets are like our children, and every doctor I have seen has given me and my babies all the time and attention we have needed. Never have I felt rushed, an inconvenience, a burden, etc. Dr. Joyce specifically has been wonderful with my 18 y/o corgi. \r \r With the sheer volume of people they see on a daily basis, I am sure more

before they were 5 stars, lost their touch, awful customer service :( 12/27/2010

For those of you who are loyal and have read only positive reviews, I would have had one to give you a month ago. The staff and the service have tumbled terribly downhill; it is no longer the compassionate care it used to be. I would not advise anyone to risk going there any more. I miss the old Shively Animal Clinic!\r \r My family has loyally taken our pets to Shively Animal Clinic & refused all other vets for three generations, and I don't even live in the neighborhood. No longer. The caring touch of the elder Dr. Fuchs has apparently departed from the office, leaving exceptionally rude and unintelligent receptionists, Drs. who once cared deeply & are now almost never seen, & nurses who love your pet & may or may not treat you with courtesy, but who lack the power to sway harsh vet decisions.\r \r I rescued a pit bull from my neighborhood knowing I couldn't keep him but wanting to keep him off the streets. What was the thanks I got for rehoming a sweet stray to a new loving owner? Shive more

unprofessional 12/11/2010

I am not a client there, I don't even live in the same state. I work at another veterinary hospital and called to request patient records. In the 5 years that I have worked in this field I have spoken to some very rude people, but never from another hospital. I simply requested medical records be faxed at their earliest convenience and was told that someone else does that and she wasn't there. OK can I leave a message? NO call back Sunday, my hospital is closed Sunday and I'm not calling back, she should have left a simple message with owners name, pets name and our fax number... simple right? I cannot believe how I was treated, never have I delt with a receptionist that rude over simple medical records. I wish that they had a website so that I could e-mail the office manager directly and let them know how unprofessional their staff is, this person has no business dealing with the public. I fear for the quality of care that they give their patients if they can't perform simple tasks. I more

Great Service at a Great Price 12/6/2010

I had quite a difficult time finding a vet to look at my sick, 6 year old ferret. I was referred to Shively Animal Clinic and Hospital by another veterinarian who wasn't interested in dealing with animals other than cats and dogs. Shively Animal Clinic sees not just cats and dogs, but other animals that people would have in their home. The wait was lengthy but they checked my ferret first to determine if it was an emergency (which would bump her up to the front of the line) and thankfully, it wasn't. Dr. Marsha was very professional and knowledgable. She took excellent care of my ferret and the visit included examining a stool sample for parasites, blood work, a small IV, prescribing medications, high calorie food and carnivore-specific food. Dr. Marsha even called back that same night to share the results of the blood work with me. Imagine my surprise when the bill came out to less than $125! I feel that the peace of mind and the ease on the pocketbook is well worth the wait. Thank you so much for taking care of my ferret! more

Dr. Joe rocks 10/6/2010

This was a necessity. I always counted on the best service, recommendations and care. I never thought about the money, this was medical care for family- We moved away due to the job, however recently we decided to start our family again, this time with dobermans. Every time I go to the vet, my first dobe decided not to like the first 4 I took him to, I wish to meet a Fuchs' Dr. , it is so not about the money. I don't remember getting calls later, however i ALWAYS received proper care while I was there. I never had a kid that didn't like the good Dr. and I believe they were seen by Father, brother, sister to end up a regular of Dr Joe. My husband and I decided we would feel better about taking a road trip to Shively from mid-michigan for regular service for these kids than to continue with the lack of care to date. I never had my dog taken away from me for a vaccination at shively. I was never treated odd for requesting a blood panel for a baseline in case of illness later. Shi more

Best Vets Out There 7/15/2010

Its a shame people have such hateful things to say about Shively. As with any business the distributors they use are different from others and their pricing is dependent upon that especially when it comes to medication. I used Shively for over 10 years until I had to move. I have been to 5 other vets and only wish to have the caring vets and inexpensive visits that Shively provided. Every vet has a different way of approaching a particular situation and that also affects the cost. I made visits to Shively every 2 weeks with my older dogs and I'll never forget the day I had to put one of my babies to sleep. As I cried the vet put an arm around me and gave me all the time I needed and even let me go out a back door to avoid the crowd of people out front. They were always compassionate and were wonderful to work with. Wish I had a Shively near me now!!!! Thank you Shively for all your care you showed my babies through the years! more

No longer the Shively I once loved. 6/24/2010

I have been taking my pets to Shively for many years now. When I moved to the area a friend suggested them to me. She said that they were caring, inexpensive and well worth the drive and the 2-3 hr wait you can expect once there. They are approx 45 minutes from my home. Initially, I completely agreed with my friend. In fact, I also suggested them to many other friends. However, as of late, I find myself thinking much differently. I recently took 2 pets to see them. One was a kitten a friend had found on the side of the road and had thought dead. Another being my beloved dog. Long story short...the kitten got a shot of vit B and a worming and my dog got his regular shots, a heartworm test, and some blood work. (Due to having some light seizure activity.) I had taken almost $200 with me and prayed that it wouldn't be that much since my husband had just lost his job. Regardless, I couldn't ignore the care of my babies. When I was told that the bill came to $275 I almost sta more

Shively Animal Clinic takes advantage of special needs pet owners. 5/21/2010

Highway robbery is what I have experienced with Shively Animal Clinic. I have a Doberman with severe epilepsy. He is on a large amount of phenobarbital twice daily which my regular vet writes a script for that I get filled for $20 at Kroger but Shively will only dispense through THEIR pharmacy which costs $140 for a lesser amount of medicine. He is also on Potassium Bromide which my vet gets for me through Wycliff in Lexington and charges me $160 for 500 capsules. \r Shively charges me $460 for the same amount of medicine.\r When I made comment that at those prices I would have to continue care with my regular vet and only use them for emergency services the office manager got real pissy and said I had to make a decision between my regular vet and Shively Animal Clinic and that they would NOT see me if I continued care with my regular vet.\r So to sum it all up, if you have a special needs pet that will require serious medicine Shively will take serious advantage of you.\r I have lost more

They Have My Vote 4/27/2010

I have been taking my cats there for quite a few years now. It started with my first two that I had to put down and they were very compassionate. I have had to put down two other cats and have adopted two others and I have always gotten great treatment and quite frankly I don't think I could take them anywhere else. They are very busy, but I go by and put my name on the list and they will call me when I am next on the list. The times I had to put my babies down, they let me go right back then and once when I had an emergency they went ahead and took him right off the bat. I always get a call a couple of days later to see how they are doing. I would highly recomment Shively Animal Clinic. more

Great care for small animals at low cost. 3/6/2010

I can't recommend this clinic enough for anyone who owns small animals and needs to see a kind and knowledgeable veterinarian who handles the animals with care. There are no vets within my area who care for small animals or exotics and if they do then they charge an extremely high fee compared to others such as cats and dogs. I drive all the way out from Mt. Washington to patronize this clinic as they've impressed me with how they've handled the care of my pet rat and with the low cost of the services provided. Pros: Great small animal vet, kind and courteous service Cons: Possible wait time if non-emergency more
