Stay away 4/16/2007

I tried the new downtown location for lunch. I will not be a returning customer. Service was poor. The wait was way too long for a simple BLT sandwich that somehow they managed to screw up. The sandwich fell apart when you picked it up, it was slathered in mayo, and the tomato slices were so thick, etc. Looking back on the experience I am not even sure it had lettuce on it. How hard is it to make a BLT? I guess my biggest pet peeve was they didn?t serve unsweetened tea. That?s like serving coffee with cream and sugar already in it. What if I don?t want cream & sugar in my coffee? I should have known when I walked in the door and only saw two people in the place during peak lunchtime. I know why now. more

Worst service and bad rice 4/3/2007

I was very disappointed at their service at the new downtown location. Once the orders came, we were told they were out of mash potatoes. Instead, I had to order rice. When it finally came, the rice was more like rice pudding. It was all wet and tasteless. I ordered fillet mignon. The meat was good, but the asparagus were overcooked. Needless to say, it was really a bad experience for my co-workers and me. I am glad I got to know the place so next time I wont take a date. Pros: ambience Cons: service, food more

Fool me once... 11/11/2006

My husband and I attended their brunch on Sunday. The nicest part of it was the live music. We walked in and waited for nearly five minutes before we were told (once I asked) that we had to seat ourselves. The food wasn't great at all...the grits looked more like runny mashed potatoes...disgusting. We ordered waffles and pancakes which were forgotten about. We had to remind the waiter after about 12 minutes and waited another 10 minutes before we got it. I couldn't believe the waffle when I saw it...it was flat and crunchy...I don't think they make waffles like that in Louisiana. We told the waiter about it...he returned it and brought back another one with the same qualities...just not as hard as the first one. The potatoes, sausage and pastries were the best things that I had. To wrap this up...when we asked what the problem was the waiter said that they had a new cook. That really wasn't an excuse to me...why would anyone hire a cook that can't even make a descent waffle. We were so dissapointed...maybe the lunch/dinner service and food is better but we'll never know...they've already fooled us once...we're not going to give them the opportunity to do it again. Pros: Live Music Cons: Service, Brunch Menu and Food Quality more

A Touch of Class! 10/4/2006

I first heard about the Sugar Shack from Beyonce's birthday bash. Sugar Shack was the catering for the entire event. The food and service at the catering along with the lifesize ice sculptor of beyonce was simply over the top nice. I went for my anniversary and the food was still great, the service was awesome and the band was a delight. I heard through the grapevine that Sugar Shack is doing a big VIp party downtown with courvoiuser... This is not your traditional dinner location, it is an upscale live music experience... I Also heard through the grapevine that Sugar Shack is opening in DT Houston in the next few weeks. I am proud to see the Sugar Shack on the Southwest side, for we needed a place like the Sugar Shack. iF YOU ARE NOT A MUSIC LOVER OR HAVE AN APPRECIATION FOR TRUE SOUTHERN CUISINE, YOU MAY NOT ENJOT THE sUGAR sHACK Pros: Everything was great Cons: The Price Tag more

Great Music And The Roses Was A Bonus. 9/27/2006

Tonight I went to Sugar Shack. The music was great. Barry Golden song "Slow Jam" and passed out roses while Carl Marshall entertained the crowd with the great sound of blues. I was seated very fast. It took 15 minutes before my order was taken and 45 minutes before I received my food. The food did not taste good and the coke drink was awful (flat and warm). The employees were very friendly. more

Famous People & Stars! 9/14/2006

I went on last evening, Thursday night, and they had a living blues legend playing- Mr. Carl Marshall. I have purchased all of Carl's albums and it was a great feeling to have the opportunity to hear him in an intimate setting. My friends and I were seated in the piano lounge, which is probably 3 feet away from the band. Carl played some of BB king's hits, Muddy Waters and others, he played my favorites "Groove Me" and "The Down home Blues". It was a real treat to see all the famous musicians playing on the jam session. There was a popular jazz singer fron Denver and a great host of other musicians from the region. There was a guy name "tricky fingers" that played the guitar like I have never heard before. It was a one of a kind "free concert". I have already made my reservations for next week's jam session. Carl thanks for keeping it real down home. Also the food was the best in the entire world. The chef's filet mignon was mouth watering good along with the fried asparagus. This is by far the best restaurant in Houston. Pros: Famous Musicians & Superstars more

Try The Lagniappe! 9/13/2006

My meal started with what Sugar Shack calls lagniappe, which is translated free pre dinner food or rather as the manager stated "A Palatte Starter". The pre dinner goodies were awesome and great portions. We recieved water, "hot water cornbread" and soul rolls which were egg rolls stuffed with southern ingredients served with their sweet potato sauce called "southern soul sauce". We recieved all this food within 3 minutes of our arrival. I must admit this was truly a great surprise... My friends and I went back on the following evening and the chef's lagniappe was southern wontons made with Jimmy Dean sausage presented on a bed of warm spinach leaves. Although I can't go everynight, I want to go and see the new nightly lagniappe. I advise all to go and have martini's and enjoy the Chef's nightly lagniappe. This is one of the hottest concepts to arrive in Houston! Pros: The Lagniappe Cons: the crowded parking lot more

The Best Fried Chops in the World 9/13/2006

I loved the size, taste, presentation and quality of the Chops served. The meal was joined by old fashioned skillet fried corn. The corn was truly differently pleasant. I will encourage all to order the Twin Fried Chops. Great Chops! Pros: Great Chops! Cons: The Crowd more

Not What I Expected 9/10/2006

I was disappointed in the Sugar Shack. I had dinner with 4 friends on a Saturday night and the experience was below average. The restaurant staff did not appear to be in tune with one another. The owner of the restaruant had to make 4 or 5 appearances at our table to apologize for one thing or another related to service. The bar was not properly stocked...go figure for a Saturday night to make half of the 100 martini's they advertise (we had to change our order 2 times because they did not have the ingredients to make our drinks). The waitress got our order wrong and the food was not seasoned at all for Creole or Louisiana style cooking. The one thing that was very nice, was the music. If you go to sit at the bar and listen to some live jazz you want be dissapointed. I would suggest you eat elsewhere. Pros: Great Music Cons: Food was average and Poor Service more

Best Bread pudding in town 9/8/2006

This is a one of a kind restaurant that is perfect for a romantic evening. We visited the Sugar Shack on Friday night September 8, 2005. The atmosphere was great. Whoever did the decorating gets an A+++. The music and the food were both off of the charts. I had the crusted the Red Fish and my husband had the 22 oz bone in Ribeye. The food was both tasty as well as presented in a cosmopolitan manner. I would recommend this restaurant to someone that is interested in experiencing fine dining at its best. Please get a piece of their chocolate bread pudding. This dessert alone is enough to bring you back to the Sugar Shack. I must tell you I went to the ladies restroom and there was a flat screen television and fresh flowers inside for your enjoyment! This is now my favorite restaurant. Needless to say, my husband and I danced the night away to the wonderful band after our meal. Everyone needs to visist the Sugar Shack I am sure you will return.... Pros: Excellent food and good service Cons: there were not any more

Too 9/3/2006

we arrived at sugar shack hoping for some good down home cooking. but when we got there, we were seated within 10 minutes, although the restaurant was half empty. we waited 45 min. for a waiter to come to our table. that was too long. a manager walked right past our table 6 times, we were trying to figure out what was going on. we ended up leaving without even anyone saying a word to us. its too bad because i wanted to try the food but we waited too long. Pros: unique food Cons: overpriced food and no customer service more

Very poor service and customer service 8/30/2006

My wife and went twice. The first time it was perhaps the best food we ever ate of course it took 50 minutes to get dinner. We went back on a Sunday and it wasn't a large crowd it took 30 minutes to get drinks, 30minutes to get our check and the owner constantly apoligized about not being able to find good help. My wife went back with a friend and was told it would take an hour to get seated but the resturant wasn't half full. The food is great, the entertainment is great, but the service and customer service is horrible. The owner didn't even comp our drinks (which was just tea) when we complained about the service. We don't plan on going back. Pros: southern style menu was great Cons: too long to get your food order and check or drink order more

The Greens are the Bomb 8/22/2006

The Collard Greens will make you mother enviuos. The chicken was good, the cornbread was ok and the sweet tea was average; however, the collard greens were the best in the world. I can't believe that they make collards the old fashioned way. It is obviuos they use fresh greens, ham hocks- yes smoked ham hocks! (I had some in my serving), bacon grease and whatever else you put in greens. It is not simply the taste, but rather the presentation is off the hooK. The greens are served in a minature calphalon pt with handles filled with piping hot greens. A minature pt of greens cost $4 and I would have paid $8. Go for lunch and order greens with a side of cornbread...it will be a real pleasure and a $4 lunch. Pros: The Collard Greens Cons: The location, I live in Galveston more

The Band is Bad! 8/21/2006

The cozy atmosphere and romantic charm reminds me of the Blue Note, the worlds finest jazz club, located in the heart of New Yorks Greenwich Village. Upon entering the facility, you become part of the exciting and spirited atmosphere. Enjoy one of the many martini's, feast on fine dining plate presentations and sit back and rock with the Band. The Band is called BAD and they really are BAD. The guy on the piano made me think little richard walked in the building and the saxophone player made me forget about kenny G. The music alone is worth the trip to the Sugar Shack. I ordered the Lobster Flambee which accented the atmosphere, yet I spent most of my night tasting martini's... The shacktini made with watermelon was good and the chocolate martini was great; however, they pale in comparison to the "Hip-Hop" martini made with hypnotiq, patron and something else they did not share. Do not drive to the sugar shack because the martini's will have you ordering more and more... This place has already become the best music location for live music in Houston (just my opinion). Pros: The Live Music and Great Martini Bar Cons: zero cons more

Best Live Music in the Southwest, Awesome Food 8/21/2006

I think the facility as a music venue is one of the best dinner venues in Houston. The saxophonist I learned was a national artist- Mr. Dean James. I expected a down home deep southern cooking type of place. I was joyfully shocked to find Fried Lobster tail served with a flambéed mango chutney sauce prepared tableside. This appetizer had a very fine dining touch and the presentation created a lasting impact upon all at the table... My 17 year old daughter said "Wow"!. She now orders the Lobster as her entree each and every time she visits. My favorite entree is the crusted Redfish Sampler which offers three unique sauces and fish coated in crawfish, andouille and I think shrimp is the third coating... The taste and presentation is to die for. I would rate the music an A every day and the food and A all the timee and the service an A to C depending upon the crowd volume. My last visit was Saturday August 19, 2006. The valet parking attendant was great, the security guard opened the front entry door and then we had to wait over an hour for a seat because of the crowd. Although we hated waiting for an hour, the staff graciously gave all the waiting guest what they call lagniappe, which appears to mean free food and drink as you await a table. The server was new yet kind and professional. My daughter ordered her favorite Lobster, my husband the buttermilk fried chicken and I feasted on a new item "The Scorecard sampler", which offers three unique gumbo's. As usual, the music was an A and the food was an A and the service ranged from a C to a Bt. In the event the service rises to the level of an A, this will become one of the premier restaurants in Houston with I'm sure a 30 day reservation waiting list. PS: Blues Legend Carl Marshal was present on one visit basketball great Robert Horry was present on another... I don't know the music industry but my daughter always spots what she calls a star. Pros: Great Food, Ambience, Valet Parking Cons: reservations are a must to avoid the crowd more

Reservations Are A Must!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/21/2006

The Jazz Brunch on Sundays takes its name from the live music, which is in itself a point of distinction. Beyond that, you can really break out of your rut and have your eggs with salmon or smoked pork. The rolling omelet station is the absolute coolest- they cook the custom omelets table-side. The buffet includes collards, cornbread, fried chicken and this Sunday they even had old fashioned mac and cheese along with the traditional breakfast components such as grits, eggs, hash browns, pancakes and waffles. My personal favorite this week (because I visit every Sunday) was the 8 piece petite chicken and waffles. The Freshly prepared blueberry waffle was joined with eight pieces of fried Cornish game hen. This pairing seemed strange at first; however, after the first portion I was reminded why the Sugar Shack is the #1 southern specialist. Oh yeah and the homemade vanilla maple syrup reminded me of my days of living in West Virginia on the family farm. One of the best components of the brunch is the price. The brunch can be ordered for as little as $11. Any brunch that includes custom ice sculptors, live saute stations and live music for as little as $11 is a winner. The only down side to the brunch is the enormous crowd, so please arrive early or make reservations! Reservations are a must to avoid waiting over an hour for a table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a great after church destination It is convenient to Lakewood Church, Higher Dimension and Windsor Village. PS: I heard pastors eat free Monday-Friday (What a noble gesture, so surely the shack deserves our support). Pros: Great Price, Great Food, Great Gospel Jazz Cons: The Large Crowd more

One Time Is Enough 8/13/2006

Visited once and don't plan on going back. Went on a Sunday and it wasn't a large crowd so I couldn't understand why it took so long for the food to arrive. They were out of some of the items on the menu. The salmon was pretty tasteless but the greens were great. The band was really good. Customer service is important in any business, it is apparent that the manager and some of the staff haven't grasped this concept yet. The portion was small and not worth the price. I expected much more but after the poor service I will never return. The food was ok, I'm from LA and anticipated a better dining experience. Pros: Great band Cons: Bad service, Poor management, length of wait for food more

Lifted only to be Dropped! 8/10/2006

I was crushed! The menu did not offer enough variety, the wait for food was too long, although the waitress was helpful. Food was alright. Drinks are good. Management is in desperate need of customer service. Music excellent. Return visit .....NO, or until food and customer serivce improves. Pros: Ambience and Music was excellent Cons: Customer Service lacked a desire for return visits, food was alright. more

Be prepared to wait 8/9/2006

I expected to love the restaurant, but I must admit it was a let down. The wait for our food was very long. When we tried to order dessert they were out of EVERYTHING, and this was just a few weeks after they had opened. Management did not provide good customer service. The food was ok but for me nothing to rave about. There were jazz musicians performing which was about the best part of the visit. more

Wait to long 8/6/2006

Visited the Sugar Shack on (August 5) to celebrate my birthday with my fiance. The music was fabulous! The atmosphere was great. The bar was great the drinks was wonderful. But the wait was unacceptable we waited over hour for a table and then had to ask if it was ready. When we were finally seat the wait staff never acknowlege that we at the table after 15 minutes. So we never got to try the food because we did not want to wait another hour for food because the customers around us had been waiting also. The waitstaff was understaffed and unfriendly. I hope you get it together on your service because you lost a customer Pros: atmosphere/band Cons: service/wait more
