I was here one Thursday night for happy hour and had a couple drinks. The service was good for how crowded it was, but the people there were just awful. A bunch of poseurs with ...

Satisfied guest 5/25/2003

My wife and I ate here for the first time last Sunday and had a great meal. She had the chicken, I had NY, both were excellent plus Eric our waiter was fantastic, offered just the right amount of service without interupting us. View was spectacular. We're going to try the happy hour next time as it runs from 4pm on on Sundays! Pros: Free parking, Great Service, Great Food more

Happy Hour and user reviews 5/18/2003

There seems to be much slamming regarding the service, but I experienced a very prompt and friendly staff. However, I only went once and STOOD next the terminal where they input orders. The place is packed so I don't believe management is taking the service concerns seriously. I sampled many happy hour offerings, the $3.95 three steak bites on toast was the only one not up to par. The drinks were great. From what I hear through word-of-mouth, not reviews, is that dinner is certainly not worth it. Then again, how many great view - beautiful people - spots are? Pros: Happy Hour more

Great food/view 3/30/2003

Happy hour is great, but arrive early. The tuna appetizer and the tempura shrimp appetizers are really good. I had filet mignon for my entree and it was excellent. The view is fantastic. We will be back. Pros: View, Happy Hour Cons: Can get crowded, Parkingif the more

No Comfort Here 3/7/2003

I was looking forward to my dining experience at PCG. The food was just ""ok"", but for the prices charged, a bit unimaginative and nothing that special. What turned me off completely was how noisey it is. It was so noisey that I had difficulty hearing my dining partner. I won't return to PCG. I won't recomend it to friends/visitors. There are much better places to dine in downtown Portland that may be just as expensive, but a much more quality experience. Go for a drink to get the view. Just not dinner. Pros: View, Great drinks Cons: Unimaginative, Average food, Noisey more

Not Cheap but Great Service 2/12/2003

I went to this place by myself one night after. The drinks weren't cheap but the bar tender was great. He introduced himself and said he would take care of me. I was in the mood for mixed drinks so I told him to suprise me. This guy is a pro! Very freindly and a great mixologist. Classy atmosphere with an older crowd. Great view of the whole city! more

SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE! 1/16/2003

I used to frequent the PCG but in December I was meeting friends from out of town and had the worst experience. The bar was full so a bouncer stopped anyone from entering it and made us form a line outside. My friends were sitting a table inside waiting for me and the bouncer wouldn't let me in even to tell them that I had arrived. A woman next to me was there for her birthday and her friends were inside with the cake. There were about 10 people in line before her so even if a friend left to get her in, she didn't have first priority. I understand fire codes and needing to follow them but their system was ridiculous. They have now lost 4 customers, many of which conduct business dinners so the potential lost income is substantial. more

Fantastic Food and Service 1/10/2003

We took my mom to Portland City Grill this week for her 90th birthday. We had a table for 8 and everyone had a nice view of the city. The service was exceptional, great wine and food recommendations from the waiter, validated our parking, and was very attentive. We arrived at 5:45PM so recommend you get there early. All the food was excellent, especially the seafood. Pros: View, Service, Food Cons: Noisy more

Disappointing 12/31/2002

I recently had dinner with several friends at the Portland City Grill. The service was poor, prices were too high and the food was below average in quality, quantity and preparation. The entries ordered covered pasta, steaks, and seafood. The pasta was fair, the seafood dishes were over-cooked and dry, the steak's quality and quantity weren't in proportion to the price. Morton's definitely is a better choice for steaks. The server was horrible for a resturant with its reputation. Our server constantly delivered items (drinks or food) to the wrong person. In the short time we were there, the waiter at the next table spilled a glass of wine on their table and dropped (and broke) another glass at the same table. It was comforting to know we didn't have the only incompetent waiter. more

Bad Service 12/31/2002

The service at this restaurant was very disappointing, because the waitress was very rude and sarcastic to our inquiries. We were a large party of 16, and we never saw her jot down any of the orders. Just the bread took 30 minutes to get. The lighting was too low, and seating was uncomfortable. For a top quality restaurant, you would think they could hire good staff, because their service determines your recommendation and opinion to others of this restaurant. Very disappointing. Pros: Food Cons: Service, Lighting more

Cheese on the plate not the next table 12/11/2002

Yeah, the view is great. It's on the 30th floor and i'm no surgeon. I do know nice atmospheres though and the cheesy dudes and hoochie mama's at the PCG don't make one. Either raise your prices or take down the cougar crossing sign. Dinner is pretty spendy considering. Management seems a little too in control while not really knowing whats up. Good starch on their shirts though. The view is new but i've seen the rest before. The cologne dude in the john is cool. Pros: nice servers, parking validation Cons: management, happyhourmob more

Room with a View and then some... 12/6/2002

Portland City Grill makes one quickly forget Atwater's ever existed. The happy hour bar food is exceptional, and professionally served to boot. Live piano music is always a nice touch, and tables are spacious and comfortable. Plan to stay awhile! more

One of my favorite places! 11/30/2002

I try to go to here as often as possible. The food, drinks, service, and view are perfect. It is the perfect restraunt for a special occation or to just have a couple drinks. I also think they do a tremendous job of accomadating the wide variety of people. I've never seen such an upscale place be so polite and friendly to all people, without taking away from the ambiance. Pros: Ambience, View, Food Cons: Lots of people!!! more

Step UP! 11/27/2002

I think Portland City Grill should be rated higher! The steaks were wonderful and the view is incomparable. Great Lemon Drop and Dark Chocolate martinis. more

Bar good, restaurant not good 11/25/2002

Showed up without a reservation on Saturday night, so the 1.5 hour wait for a table was no surprise. Drinks in the bar weren't overly expensive and the sushi and crab cakes were very good and reasonably priced. Dinner was another matter, however. The sturgeon was served in a strangely unappealing sauce and the $32 filet was the driest medium cooked filet I have ever tasted. Stick to the bar and sushi. Pros: view, happy hour Cons: loud more

OVERATED 11/14/2002

We decided to take our largest client to dinner at the Portland City Grill. After all of the hype on this restuarant we had thought it would be a good choice. We were greatly disappointed. Everything was just OKAY. Very expensive for just OKAY. Pros: Location, View Cons: Expensive more

Wonderful 11/11/2002

It was a great experience, I will be back time and time again! more

Best in Portland, hands down! 11/5/2002

We ate at this restaurant last Friday, and were a little nervous, having read many negative reviews regarding service. However, we had a great experience there. Our server David was friendly and professional, and recommended some excellent dishes. This was by far the best dining experience we've had in Portland. The view is beautiful, the food was absolutely perfect, our service could not have been better. The drink menu is extensive and very good. The apple martini was to die for. A few minutes after we were seated at a booth, we noticed a couple leaving a window table and asked our server if we could move to that table. Immediately we had two other waiters at the table who took our drinks and coats over to our new table. I have nothing but good things to say about this restaurant; everyone in Portland should come here to experience it. Pros: Excellent service, Delicious menu, Great drinks more

Good food, cold service 10/30/2002

Server seemed to be unhappy to be at work. Loved the view, and the food was good. The group serving thing, where random people deliver your food, doesn't work very well. After our food dropped off, we needed wine, re-cooking on one entree, etc., but we couldn't find our server. Also, she never smiled once. Last time I was there, I had to go up to the bar for a beer. Pros: view, decor, entrees Cons: service more
