Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Worth the visit, certainly 1/9/2007

This is a man's steakhouse.\r No offense, ladies - but this was obviously made for men.\r Stand-up bar where I got a very nice Sazeracs Rye Manhattan.\r Cash only. \r All men waiters. Ours, Eli, was very good and had good suggestions.\r The portions are kingly.\r \r Yep, It's a man's place.\r My wife enjoyed it as well, however, and we really had a fun experience along with good food. It's not gourmet by any stretch, but it is very fresh and tasty and a unique blast from the past. \r \r We started out with the tomato and onions salad; thick slices of both meant for the special Luger sauce (which is like a shrimp cocktail sauce with A-1 added to it). Then we moved into the rest of the meal - a huge porterhouse for 2, sliced for us and served on a sizzling plate. It actually cooked while it was on the plate. A delicious creamed spinach and some hashbrowns served well as the side dishes. The steak was very good, if a bit pricey.\r \r We had a nice bottle of St. Emillion with the meal that complimented the meat nicely.\r We walked about 3/4s of a mile from there up Bedford to the L on 7th St. so we could get a little Williamsburg flavor .\r \r All in all a very nice experience and worth visiting. Pros: Good food, lots of fun Cons: Weird neighborhood, Cash only more

Best Steak.. Worst Service 1/5/2007

If you want tender fillet mignon rather than chewy porterhouse, this one is not for you. If you want romantic diner with candle light rather than noise cheap wooden table, this one is not for you. If you like well cooked rather than bloody rare, this one is not for you.\r \r I have read couple of complaints about their service recently and I agree with them. Their service was terrible and it is getting worse. I am usually annonied by waiters' bossy attitute also. But they are nice to Jewish neighbor customers \r .\r Even based on all of these, I do not hesitate to vote this one as #1 steak in NY. Their hot, bloody, oily, rare potterhouse is too tempting to ingore them.\r \r If you really hate Peter Luger service but cannot resist their food, I would recommend Wolfgang's as an alternative. Because of trivial reason, Wolfgang provides almost as good steak as Peter Luger. I would not say the food is better, but Wolfgang has 10 times better interior and service is slightly better. Pros: Best Poterhouse Cons: Service more

I would not even know if this place is good because they LOST my reservation made a month in advance. 12/24/2006

I made a reservation 1 month in advance to eat at Peter Luger over the holidays. When I called to confirm my reservation, the staff was horribly rude, and said they did not have my reservation in the books. Unlike a fabulous restaurant some claim that it is, the manager did not even try to fit my party in; he simply told me to ""come in for drinks, and he would see what he could do."" What terrible customer service! I am actually glad that they lost my reservation - I much rather spend the money at a respectable steak house! more

And people come here because...? 12/17/2006

This was my first time and I will NEVER go back or advise anyone to patronize the restaurant. First let's start off with the food.\r My party and I ordered their 'famous' porterhouse, creamed spinach, german potatoes, caesar salad, and tomato/onions. We orderd two porterhouses (each serves two; $79/porterhouse). We told the hurried waiter that we wanted one 'medium' and the other 'medium-rare.' He returns with two steaks, 'rare' and 'medium-rare.' We know that waiter got the order correctly because the steaks were marked with little plastic stakes that read 'medium-rare' and 'medium.' Then the waiter explains that the steaks are purposely undercooked because the plates are very hot. So hot that you can actually sear the steaks on it, which is what the waiter demonstrated. But the plates are not hot enough the cook the middle portion (rare part) of the steaks. I believe Luger's sears the meat and throws them into the oven along with the serving plate. If we're paying $40/person for a steak, getting the right temp of the meat is the least they could do. Although they look horrible, the steaks are not bad. Yet they don't have that thick salt and pepper crust that I was looking for. There's a lot of oil on the plate, probably from the excessive amounts of butter they use.\r \r Creamed Spinach: spinach without much cream. It was okay. I believe Boston Market has a superior creamed spinach and Houston's has the best creamed spinach (they also add artichoke) I've tasted in a restaurant.\r \r The overly dry German potatoes were as good as the homestyle fries from IHOP - horrible.\r Caesar salad was average. Tomato & onions: what do you expect? It's thick slices of onion and tomatoes for $11. Tha's it.\r Decor/Ambience: Horrible and old!!!!\r Service: horrible. Our plates and silverware were literally thrown at us. Waiter was not rude but not too nice.\r Verdict: Luger's is the Soup Naz! of steaks. But at least the Soup Naz! doesn't charge $300 to feed four. Pros: Free Parking Cons: Everything more

Worse restaurant in New York! 11/29/2006

\r I can't believe this restaurant is even recommended by some. The worse part of this restaurent is its SERVICE! If it were a self serve place, it would still be BETTER than the service the waiters are providing there. Steak in soaked in 1 inch of melted fat/butter. Lights are brighter than office work lights which kills any ambience. Crowded and noisy. Only reason steak as A BIT of flavor is because it was cooked IN BUTTER. I'd pay more for fine dining but this isn't even worth it for casual dinning. The service kills it all. Food isn't great. Price you are payin for this kind of kind of food is ridiculous. \r \r I've tried many places in NY and this is by far the WORSE. I thought I loved NY until I came here. This is NY embarassment. Pros: NOTHING Cons: SERVICE SERVICE SERVICE AND EVERYTHING ELSE more

Mmmmmmeat 11/17/2006

Peter Lugers is the epitome of a 'mans' steakhouse. Their is nothing fancy about it - the tables are covered in paper, the waiters wear dirty aprons, the menu is shorter than this review, and the decor is not worth mentioning. But thats not why you go there. Lugers is a steakhouse in every sense of the word, and in all my visits it has consistently produced the best meat in nyc. \r \r Be warned: Do not even think about asking if they can serve you something other than Porterhouse. more

Rather average 11/4/2006

My husband kept telling me how great Peter Luger is and that we MUST go there sometime. We decided to go there for our 2 year anniversary and I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, their steak was good, I would not say it was out of this world but good. In almost every review people were mentioning their creamed spinach. What a tasteless side dish. Even my husband who kept telling me how great their spinach was said it was far below average. Seriously Boston Market makes MUCH tastier creamed spinach! Then there were fried potatoes (something like hash browns) but these were SUPER dry, crusty even and super salty. Now I LOVE fried potatoes and it never happened that I had to pass on this dish, but I did last nigh. I mean how can you screw up fried potatoes but turns out you can. One of our friends who was also at Lugers for the first time summed it up very well: My grandma used to make potatoes like that, but that is because she was very old by then and could not make them any better anymore. Weve also had shrimp cocktail which was pretty good, tomatoes and onions smothered with PLs sauce which was an interesting combination, and then weve also had bacon. Now I actually loved bacon. One order consists of this HUGE strip of something that looks like Canadian bacon and it was great! Their desert was pretty good too, weve had apple strudel (sp?) with shlug. Im glad that we went to PLs only so that Id know for myself what it really is. I dont think that there is a second trip in the cards for me. While I realize that this is a steakhouse and those who go there go there mainly for the steaks, BUT I also think that an establishment with such reputation should have good side dishes as well! Oh yeah I must agree with others who said that they are not stingy on the alcohol. My apple martini was VERY strong! Pros: Nice steak, GREAT bacon Cons: spinach, fried potatoes more

Best Steak in NYC and Beyond 10/25/2006

I've been going here for 30 years. Quite a bit has changed - the waiters are now pretend to be surly and gruff, rather than actually being that way as they always were - chalk that up to the continued theme-parking of NYC. That aside, this is the best porterhouse in the world, period. If you are looking for filet mignon, pretty silverware, apple tinis and cappucinos - go to Craftsteak or one of the others. If you want a great piece of steak, the best cream spinach ever and some solid german fried potatoes and grilled onions - Luger's is it.\r \r One little aside, I once dated someone in Texas who's father bragged about Texas beef. He spent a night making fun of me when I told him about Lugers - ""good steak in Brooklyn - ha!"" - and assured me that we were going to the best steak in the world the next night, a place in Dallas. When we got there the walls were adorned with many ""Top 10 US steak places"" - Mr. Texas kept pointing to the Texas place we were dining - ""See #2, #3, #5"" on all the different lists. I noticed one thing, consistently, ""Peter Luger's"" - #1 on all lists. The guy almost had a stroke. Absolutely priceless. \r \r Enjoy #1. more

So good! 10/20/2006

I don't generally like to eat meat- I'm not that carnivorous but I would go back to eat Peter Luger's steak. I love their 'special sauce' as well. I had their side order of creamed spinach which in my opinion isn't so great, but their fries were excellent! I put their sauce on everything. Tried their apple dessert as well which didn't impress me. But overall, I will be going back. Oh, and one more thing. I really hated the atmosphere. The lighting is too bright, the people are too loud. Pros: Steak, fries, 'special sauce' Cons: Ambience more

try it once and decide 8/17/2006

Yes, this place is expensive ($70/head with inexpensive wine and NO dessert). However, it's worth trying once. If you are a steak eater, you will appreciate the ""natural"" tastiness of a porterhouse and the way Luger's ages it. That being said, if you prefer different cuts (i.e. ribeye) -- you're better off going to one of many NYC fine steakhouses. Sides (creamed spinach and german potatoes are delicious). We were seated promptly and our waiter was a very amicable gentleman. I like that the crowd is a decent mix of locals, tourists, and non-Wall Street professionals (but yes, there are banker meatheads in the room.) Overall good experience but it's too expensive (and artery clogging) to go regularly. Pros: Easy parking, friendly waitstaff, casual dress Cons: Hard to get a reservation, expensive more

The Be all End all of Steaks 7/28/2006

Just got back from Luger's today for my birthday, I have actually been going there for 10 years now and had to leave a review becasue I quite honestly am blown away how people can criticize the product they put out. You cant even describe how good this steak is. I defy anyone to tell me where else you can cut the steak with your fork, it practically melts in your mouth- and the sides are amazing. Creamy Spinach and German potatoes along with the incredible sauce. What are people looking for??? If you looking for ambeince forget it, its a beer hall. With the exception of Sparks Ive been to every major steakhouse in Manhattan and although the atmosphere may be nicer in some places (Palm and Morton's), no one comes close. I'll even go as far to say Old Homsestad is an embarrasment. A meal at Luger's is by far not a cheap affair, but i cant understand how you can't look at this as money well spent. Lugers is an amazing experience, and if you dont agree as your leaving, check out the wall on your left as the Zagat's plaques (ever hear of them?) have been rating it the top steakhouse in New York 15 years in a row. Anyone how is down on Luger's is an amateur and is best suited for Outback or maybe Charlie Brown's. more
