Review content:
My husband kept telling me how great Peter Luger is and that we MUST go there sometime. We decided to go there for our 2 year anniversary and I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, their steak was good, I would not say it was out of this world but good. In almost every review people were mentioning their creamed spinach. What a tasteless side dish. Even my husband who kept telling me how great their spinach was said it was far below average. Seriously Boston Market makes MUCH tastier creamed spinach! Then there were fried potatoes (something like hash browns) but these were SUPER dry, crusty even and super salty. Now I LOVE fried potatoes and it never happened that I had to pass on this dish, but I did last nigh. I mean how can you screw up fried potatoes but turns out you can. One of our friends who was also at Lugers for the first time summed it up very well: My grandma used to make potatoes like that, but that is because she was very old by then and could not make them any better anymore. Weve also had shrimp cocktail which was pretty good, tomatoes and onions smothered with PLs sauce which was an interesting combination, and then weve also had bacon. Now I actually loved bacon. One order consists of this HUGE strip of something that looks like Canadian bacon and it was great! Their desert was pretty good too, weve had apple strudel (sp?) with shlug. Im glad that we went to PLs only so that Id know for myself what it really is. I dont think that there is a second trip in the cards for me. While I realize that this is a steakhouse and those who go there go there mainly for the steaks, BUT I also think that an establishment with such reputation should have good side dishes as well! Oh yeah I must agree with others who said that they are not stingy on the alcohol. My apple martini was VERY strong!
Pros: Nice steak, GREAT bacon
Cons: spinach, fried potatoes
