Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Memorable Meal for a Celebratory Occasion 4/27/2010

Another South Williamsburg gem! It took me 2 years to finally eat a proper potterhouse here and see what the “best steak in NYC” tastes like. Getting reservations on a Sunday afternoon was surprisingly easy – provided you make them about a month in advance. Don’t even attempt to make dinner reservations unless you’re prepared to dine at 5pm or 10pm. As expected, this NYC institution has an old school atmosphere, with quirky bartenders and no-nonsense waitstaff. It all added to the memorable experience nonetheless. The bread that came with the steaksauce was wonderful. We stuck to the staples – cream spinach and giant tomato slices with fresh mozzarella as sides, and a potterhouse steak for 2 (our party was 1 guy and 2 girls – the perfect combo for a potterhouse). The food came out very quickly to our pleasant surprise, as we were starving. There was more fat on the meat than I had preferred, although the steak was really delicious. Some parts were a little tough and chewy but for the most part, the meat was tender and very tasty, esp the part that you carve out of the t-bone (yum!). All in all, it was such a delightful experience and such an adventure to come out to Brooklyn for; this is the kind of meal that you’ll cherish with close friends for a lifetime! Pros: Potterhouse, Quick Service Cons: Dinner Reservations, Cash Only Policy more

Peter Luger Steak House, The WORST in New York!!! 4/26/2010

Peter Lugar's has been a New York Icon for as long as I can remember. What I can understand is WHY? YYou have to wait a month to make a reservation, the wait staffs are nasty and conduct themselves with an attitude, and the steak is sub quality. I had the misfortune of going there recently with a birthday party. I order my steak well don and what I got were BURNT lumps of meat that tasted like sand. It doesn't pay to complain because they act as if they are doing you a favor by letting you eat there and OH, forget your reservation time you'll end up waiting an hour when you get there anyway. And the meal for 6 was over $400.00!\r \r New Yorkers, Visitors, don't be drawn into this trap! PETER LUGERS STINKS!!! If you want a top quality steak go to the Old Homestead or better yet go to Arthur’s in Hoboken, NJ on Washington and 3rd. Their delicious ""Our Steak"" is 24 oz Sirloin that makes Peter Lugar look like a bad day at White Castle.\r \r STAY AWAY FROM PETR LUGARS!!!!!! Pros: The best time is when I left Cons: There is nothing good about the food or the Nasty Waiters more

SUCKS! 4/10/2010

I love to try new restaurants. One of my favorite things to do. After this expierience I felt like I got the s%!t kicked out of me! The wait staff treated my friends and I like dogs. The way they threw the food at us, talked at us like we were kids, and the over all feeling that they thought they were superior for some reason. SAVE YOUR MONEY! The chairs are uncomfortable, spinach taste frozen...I swear I get the same kind at the grocery store. You jerks might make lots of dough but no way are you going home feeling good about yourselves. You can't when you go through life treating ppl like that. The steak is bull sh*$! My b.b.q. taste better. Trying Wolfgangs next. Pros: free chocolate Cons: you feel used after more

My back yard BBQ tastes better!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3/25/2010

THE RATING SYSTEM NEEDS TO ADD A ZERO FOR THIS REVIEW. I was in the city with my colleague and the CEO of a well known N.J based manufacturing company. We were in the mood for steak and were heading to Del Friscos in NYC. I heard that Peter Luger Steak House was the best of the best so we decided to give it a try. I travel for a living and had dinner at top notch steak houses accross the country such as Del Friscos, Ruth Chris, Shulas, and New York Prime in Boca Raton Florida. I was shocked that Peter Lugar couldn't stand up to the challenge. I asked for a Filet and was told that I had to order a steak for two which was a large porterhouse cooked like someone put it in an electric oven and put it up to the broiler for 10 mins, it was fatty and nasty. The cut was not thick and the waiters almost knock me over as they served which appeared to be left over hash browns from the waffle house and thawed out frozen spinach. The waiter's rushed us to order and rushed us out. They wouldn't accept credit which is fine but we were insulted when the waiter held my colleague to recite the four digit pin before he enter it into the machine. he also asked if my colleague knew the three digit security code on the back of the card. The kicker was when my colleague was asked to write his phone number on the receipt, maybe the waiter want to call my colleague for a date. The food was nasty, nasty, nasty, so I told the waiters that they were pretty cocky for guys who work at a steak house with terrible food. If your ever in South Florida, try New York Prime just off of I95 and Glades Road in Boca Raton., It is the best of the best and you will be treated like a VIP every time you east there!!! Pros: None, a Diner is better!!!! Cons: The waiters are rude and arrogant, the food is terrible!! more

#1 Steakhouse in NY 1/28/2010

Came here for my boyfriend's bday. We got the bacon as the appetizer, porterhouse for two, cream spinach, German fries and finally hot fudge sundae. The bacon was not the regular one you get from grocery store; it is a little thicker than the Canadian bacon and juicier. You pair it with tomato and onion and their house sauce. It was ilke heaven. The steak of course was amazing and we couldn't finish it. We packed everything to go. Our server was actually pretty attentive and nice. They even sang my boyfriend a Happy Birthday song! The decor was not really fancy and it looks like an old German beer house but it goes well with the atmosphere here. Not great for romantic dates because it is kind of loud but i think either way, your date will appreciate the food and the money you spent! Pros: Simply Delicious Cons: Hard to get a table more

Martin G, you just don't get it! 1/6/2010

After reading your response Martin G. I have come to realize that there are many people in this world, you being one of them, that don't know class or high quality even after they are exposed to it and never will. You just don't get it. You could be served the finest wines, the best cognac, the finest cigars and expensive colognes and yet you still will hold to your belief that marlboro cigarettes, Budwiser beer and two dollar shots at the dive bar down the street is just as good. Class is not something that can be taught or learned. It's something to be appreciated. Peter Luger is class all the way and it's a shame that by saving a few twentys for a month or two lets the low end of society cancel their olive garden reservation and sits them among the elite and lets them expose their beer pallet taste to champagne living. Then to make matters worse you go and find fault with that which is without any fault at all. You are much to unsofisticated for Peter Luger. The decor, the meal, it was all to much for you. Money is not the problem. As i said, today anyone can scrounge up a little savings to treat themselves to anything. It's being of a certain class and cut of society that money can't buy, so don't blame Peter Luger, it's not them where the fault lies. more

Bravo Priso 1/4/2010

Ok first of all this site is to review a restaurant. There is no reason for someone to write a half page essay about another persons review mr or ms. priso. I simply did not enjoy my experiece at the worlds famous ""Peter Luger"" steakhouse and I was sharing that with the citysearch community before they too are swindled into the same trap as I. Now as far as me not enjoying ""the most expensive steakhouse "", price is not an issue for me. I have no problem paying when its worth the money. To make a long story short if anyone is bitter it's you. Im sorry if you are an employee there Priso or Family of the owners but the restaurant is just not that good. Pros: steak wasn't bad Cons: terrible service more

best steak in the US!!!! 1/1/2010

I have been to many steakhouses throughout the US and this was by far the best!!! The owner of my pharmacy Palma Chemist treated the entire staff during the holiday and boy, this was one of the Best Xmas presents ever! Our waiter Otto, who obviously has been there for many years gave us excellent service. The shrimp cocktail tasted like it was right out of the sea, the bacon appetizer was great and the porterhouse steak, ordered medium rare was outrageous. A couple of people in my party ordered the steak well done, much to the displeasure of our waiter and then said they have had better. Thats like taking a bottle of Moet and diluting it with a bottle of Colt45.Guess you can take the person out of outback but you...By the way, the creamed spinach side was incredible. Only problem was that after dining on this meal fit for a king, we didnt have any room for the delicious deserts going by our table.recommend...recommend...RECOMMEND!!! Pros: old world atmosphere Cons: cant afford it daily!!! more

Nothing better 12/4/2009

Nobody does steak better, but you need a reservation for dinner a month in advance. Pros: Amazing food Cons: Very pricey, most patrons are over 50, need a reservation more

The BEST STEAK HOUSE IN NY 12/1/2009

Don't even bother going to other steak places, nothing compares to Peter Luger's.Simply the best!!i'm a loyal customer since the 90's,Don't go anywhere .Steaks are moist,in good portions, always cooked in perfection. And I have enough to take home Pros: amazing steaks, wonderful attentive service Cons: making reservation more

Delicious! 11/24/2009

My boyfriend and I went for our very first time and we were very pleased. We started off with a few slices of bacon and a sliced tomato. I'm not one to balk at the price of food when it's truly delicious, but I'm still not sure why a tomato was $13. It was flawless looking, yes, but it didn't have a wonderful flavor and it was JUST tomato. Next time we're just going to get extra bacon because that was the best double cut bacon I've ever had. We decided to get the porterhouse for 2 and a ribeye. Both were excellent. They were the best non-kobe steaks I've ever had. My boyfriend doesn't drink and they don't serve wine by the glass, so I ordered the 1/2 bottle of Cab for myself. It was very overpriced at $39. I won't bother with any wine next time. The bread basket was wonderful. It was really a great selection. We ordered fries and creamed spinach for our sides. The fries didn't look very good and they tasted about the same, but that might have been the best creamed spinach I've ever had. It was very light and flavorful without being overpowering. Some places make a very heavy creamed spinach and that doesn't really appeal to me. For dessert we ordered key lime pie and chocolate mousse cake. The key lime was nothing special and I was really wishing I'd ordered the chocolate cake which was very moist and delicious, again not too heavy. The service was very eh, but I've noticed that about 95% of the legendary must eat places aren't very friendly because the food is so good that you'll go back anyway. One thing that's tricky is that it's cash only and the menu online doesn't have prices, so it's really hard to guess how much cash to bring. I'd say bring $125-150 per person if you plan on doing a full meal plus alcohol, tax and tip. That should be more than enough. Pros: Great steaks, amazing bacon Cons: bad wine, $13 tomato, cash only more

Bad food, it is all a hype 11/9/2009

Upon arrival, we’ve been seated promptly. This was our first time at Peter Lugers. We ordered tomato “salad” (One large tomato sliced into 5 slices - $12.00). I know they claim it is a special grown tomato. Sorry, my husband and I didn’t notice anything special about it, very average tasting tomato. We also ordered spinach and steak for 2. Spinach tasted like a 99c defrosted pack of spinach with no cream or anything else in it. So I did not eat it at all, my husband ate some. So, we told ourselves, maybe salads and spinach is not their specialty, steak must be great here(All great reviews????). Our steak arrived. It looked nice, large enough for too. Taste was a huge disappointment for both of us. We’ve made reservations 3 wks in advance to eat this.. Steak was pretty tough and had no taste. Their “Peter Luger” sause, is a regular shrimp cocktail sauce you can buy at any supermarket. Ok, I can’t compare it to too many other fancy/expansive stakehouses, but even “Outback” is WAY better. We’ve been to Del Frisco’s in NYC, and it was great, a bit more expansive than Peter Lugers. So, at Peter Lugers our bill came to $135.00 (we also ordered 2 coffees and 1 desert). Final Note: Bad, Bad, Bad food. Our server was nice. It is all a hype, nothing else. Their upstairs section was totally empty, but they were telling people that asked if they could be seated –NO, you need to make reservations. Pros: service was nice Cons: bad, bad food more

Excellent 9/16/2009

I have read some bad reviews about Peter Lugers and was a bit apprehensive. It was many years since going there my first time and I was a little young to really remember what it was like. I like a good steak and Peter Lugers has it. I do a lot of traveling around the world and will say I have had better steak. This is mainly because the Filet Mignon is my favorite and they are noted for their Porterhouse. The steak was done perfectly the way we ordered and the German Potatoes and the Creamed Spinach were very good. Before dinner I had a couple of cocktails which were superb. As for the staff, I found them to be friendly, helpful and, all and all, quite good at their job. It was a bit bright for me as I like a little more mood to the atmosphere. An absolute great place to go with your buddies for a steak and drinks. Pros: Steak, Drinks, Service, Time waited for seating. Cons: lighting, very bright. better for hanging out with buddies. more

Worst dining experience on any continent 8/23/2009

They deserve zero stars, instead a black hole, as this was the worst experience I have had at a steakhouse let alone a restaurant anywhere in the world. The menu was limited, the steak offered was only porterhouse and served in bulk, so must be done to meet all diners’ needs. It was fatty and chewy and tasteless and drenched in oil. The vegetables were no better. The famous 'German' potatoes were left over hash browns at best. The waiter who served us, was a savage, he servied me by moving my hands out of the way with a knife and serving spoon to get at my plate, cutting my knuckles. After rushing us away out immediately after eating, they did not accept a credit card, and the debit machine was (as others have reviewed) was not working, which embarrassed both of the men in our party as they had not told us prior to seating the limited payment method, hence they were sent to the bank machine like criminals for cash, while the restaurant held me behind for ransom. During my hostage taking I asked to speak with the manager, and on complaining to the manager saying politely this was the worst experience in fine dining I have ever had and explaining how embarassed I was, rather than receiving an apology, I instead was scolded. To quote the manager ""most leave saying it's the best meal I've ever had', perhaps this is so for the odd savage that stops in. This was the word experience and cannot be rated well by savvy New Yorkers nor international guests who have dined the world, this is the absolutely no better than a road side diner with cranky bad service, bad food, and a horrible attitude. They do not deserve your business. In fact charging 300+ for four to dine on cheap California wine, gristly steak and overcooked potatoes with offensive and aggressive service is nothing short of robbery. Cons: Horrible service, poor qualilty meat, diner atmosphere more

Not worth the trip 7/20/2009

On my recent trip to New York I made a special trip over to Brooklyn to visit Peter Luger. Arriving right on time for my 10:45 reservation the door was locked. The bus boy wouldn't even let us in to talk to the manager about their error. When the manager did come out he apologized and said they had already turned the broilers off so that there was nothing he could do. By the way, they had confirmed the reservation twice by phone. Cons: Poor Organization more

WOW (BEST PLACE YET) 7/9/2009

It makes sense why this place has so many excellent reviews. Loved it so much, can't wait to go back. The service was amazing. Very friendly place. The whole experience was so delightful. See you soon peter. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Pros: Best steak I ever had in my life. Cons: 0 more

Nast y host, overrated food 5/10/2009

We made a reservation 4 weeks in advance, it took 45-1 hour to get a table. The matrede Alex was extremely rude, obnoxious, unapologetic, mean.....definitely not a good start to a nice evening in a well knowns place. The food is overrated - I have had many steaks that were 200% better in the past, the waiters are abrupt, quick, you feel like they are trying to chase you out form the place. Not a clean place, not a smile in the room from staff...this place needs to go. There are so many other places in Brooklyn or NY City that would treat their customers so much better and you will get a much better meal for much less....AVOID THIS PLACE! NVER AGAIN! Pros: Location Cons: Rude matrede alex, waited 45 min with reservations more
