Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Still the Benchmark of All Steakhouses! 6/20/2011

My wife and I eat here a few times a year and we are never disappointed. The porterhouse for 2 is always perfectly cooked and the seafood never disappoints! Desserts are impeccable especially the Pecan Pie and the Chocolate Mousse Cake with fresh (Schlag) whipped cream on top. We tried all the top steakhouses in the NYC metro area and we are always disappointed when we compare it it to Peter Luger's! We will be customers for life! Peter Luger's prices are on point for the level of service and food you get! It is worth every penny and then some! more

Great meat! 5/15/2011

A traditional family style restaurant with inexpensive price. Great meat with very original taste! It worths for the wait and long reservation period. Highly recommended! more

Excellent! 5/14/2011

It gets really busy here, but the steaks are so delicious that it is a must visit. I always choose the sirloin and I've never been disappointed. more

just absolutely great more

First TIme - excellent experience 2/11/2011

Been in NY my whole life and this was my first time at Peter Lugers. Dinner was delish - tender sirloin- they did a great job cooking it the way I like it, still mooing. Service was fine - I don't know what anyone else was complaining about - we had a terrific time. more

Finger-lickin' good! 1/23/2011

The wait was long, but not overly unpleasant. I just moved to Brooklyn from Idaho, and nostalgia for good steak times brought me to Peter Luger's. The ambiance is unique, a great combination of the old and the new and urban. Having a reservation really paid off because my steak was DELICIOUS beyond words. more

Best Damn Burger! 1/11/2011

The Burger at Peter Luger is one of the best, if not THE best on the city! Check out the burger blog of a true burger connoisseur at: (search: damnburger) for a full review of this burger and other great ones in NYC.. I'm on a quest to find the best Damn burger and I eat a new burger every week, so check out the reviews... more

What an experience! 12/10/2010

You have to book long in advance to get there: but this is a wonderful exoerience! pick the tomato or the tomato and oignon for the first dish, and you will say that this is the best tomato ever! and there is hardly anything else to choose anyway. Then the meat: it is just so perfect you can remeber the taste of it long after the experience. And no thrill at all in this incredible place whare the waiters are so busy they even can forget to give the menu... It is delicious and memorable. more

Classic, what's not to love! 11/22/2010

Doesn't get any better than this! Always a tried and true I;m a big meat eater and always know I can get a good meal here! more

Best Steak ever 11/15/2010

Really great steak. When the order arrived we were in doubt if we could finish that big steak. But in no time, the plate was empty. Awesome steak. Need to visit this place every year. more

Good Food but nothing else good 10/23/2010

Visiting Sat 10/16/10. Spoke 3 times on phone for reservation. Not once did they mention that no credit cards were acceptable nor advised at door. Drink prices not published. Charged $10.00 each for a tiny mug of Kostritzer beer-outlandish. More than one waiter. Waiters had to be hunted down. Table not cleaned off before serving desert. Price and service doesn't warrant a return visit. Zagat and other ratings exagerated, not truthfull. Not a good experience for my party of 5. auf Wiedersehen Peter Luger. more

Not so special 10/21/2010

I have been wanting to try steak here for years and finally went for my birthday. I was very unimpressed, the steak was ok but not great like I had hoped and with the price we paid I expected a lot more. My big gripe came with the service the waiter repeatedly put his arm pit into my face each time he put anything on the table, we were given dirty wine glasses and dripping wet plates for our meal. The highlight of the meal was the slab of bacon I had for an appetizer but from that point it went down hill quite quickly. more

Great steak, awful service 10/14/2010

We got the great steak we expected, but the service ruined it for us. The waiter would not look at us, nor would he talk to us. I ran out of water twice and the maitre'd had to bring us our horseradish. The service was enough to send us to Smith and Wollensky next time. more

Exquisite food that will make you come back for more! 9/7/2010

What a great place for steak! A landmark of Brooklyn dining as your near the river and great views of the city skyline. The food is great, delicious and mouth watering!! Quite expensive but definitely worth it!!! more

The best steak I ever ate 8/19/2010

After months and months of brain-breaking studying, my boyfriend finally completed the first step of the US Medical Licensing Exam! We needed to celebrate and I knew just the place. Under the East River and down Driggs Ave. it's off to Peter Luger's we went! All I really knew about the establishment was that it was cash-only, very expensive, had a reputation for snooty service and served AWESOME steak. Walking into the restaurant, it felt like I could have been in any era - the place is timeless (it's been around since 1887 so I guess it has to be). We made reservations, which you absolutely need about 2 months in advance I'd advise, and only had to wait a couple of minutes for our table. Contrary to what we expected, our waiter, Bernard, was warm, welcoming and very happy to make recommendations. The menu is very simple with few options for add-ons and the way your order steak is not by cut or even by oz. You can either get Steak for 2, Steak for 3, Steak for 4, or Steak for 6. Expensive aside (you have to just suck it up if you've already made it in the door), the meat was incredible! When steak goes to heaven, this is where it goes; super buttery in texture with a nice crisp on the outside. As for sides, and you have to order something else all you'll be eating is cow, we started with the Caesar salad and had the German-fried Potatoes and Creamed Spinach. The salad was pretty standard, but nicely dressed, while the potatoes were yummy but not that different from your typical home fries. The thought of creamed spinach takes me back to the days of eating in my dreary elementary school cafeteria, but I could have eaten this stuff by the bowlful. Not overly creamy and still with a fresh spinach flavor, this side is a must-do. In the end, we were too full for dessert, but after seeing the table next to us order special ""Holy Cow"" ice cream sundae, I'm definitely game for that next time. All of their desserts are served with homemade Schlag, or amazing amazing creamy whipped cream. I know NYC has so many hip and trendy eating establishments you would like to try, but trust me on this one. Oldies can be goodies and Peter Luger Steakhouse is a goodie. Make your reservations now for October! more

Disappointing and completely inaccurate ratings 8/19/2010

If there was a zero star, I would have chosen to rate this restaurant as that! The waiters were ever changing & luckily for us, the 2nd waiter we had with the black dirty nails went on to another table. For such a limited menu, in food & wine, it’s hard to believe that the waiters have no idea of the wines by the glass that is offered. I almost cancelled our reservations for a 2nd time then thought wrongly to go outside of my gut feeling and finally went for dinner. \r \r Seriously??? Again, Seriously??? It’s so unbelievable that this is considered the best steakhouse in the US and that being said; let’s go on to more realistic ratings…\r \r Setting the stage: Smack dab in the center of what looks like at any moment you are going to get mugged! Not a pretty site & we went during sun light. I wouldn’t want to be here at dark! People in flip flops at every age range, cobwebs all over the upper walls & beer steins, are the wooden tables authentic? If not, they looked like it. \r \r We started with the tomato & onion salad, served plain. If you want sauce, there is 1 to choose from called “Luger’s Sauce” aka… Cocktail Sauce from the can! This is there “special” sauce that you not only use on your salad, you use it on your steak or what ever pleases you. Now, getting to the point…\r \r The beef was overcooked, tough & grizzly… something you could expect from CORN FED cattle. It comes out in 2 cups of unidentifiable hot liquid, when we asked about it the waiter said is that it was a combination of butter & aus jus. To us, it looked like straight vegetable oil with little bits of dark pepper & some microscopic meat droppings. I had the first bite and wanted to spit it out immediately! Now, I don’t mean to disrespect Denny’s, but if I could have imagined that I was eating a steak from Denny’s, that’s exactly what ran through my thoughts! \r \r Disappointed, I tried different sections of the “Steak for 2” to see if I had just eaten a “bad bite” NO! It was a BAD STEAK through & through. Honestly, the worst steak I had ever tried to eat! I spit most of it out on my fork and back on the plate. The waiter never came back to ask how our food was. I wouldn’t even feed this steak to my dog so we left the majority of the portion sitting there and ran back to the city to enjoy dessert to flush that bad taste memory away! I remember steak in the dorms to be of better quality & taste than this. Don’t waist your hard earned dollars on this one… you will be more fulfilled at any fast food chain; coming from a NO fast food eater. \r more

Oh, the gods of deliciousness have spoken!!!!!!! 6/29/2010

Yes, you're in for a treat with Peter Luger's. Classy, historic, delectable, nothing not to like except for maybe the price for the experience. But if you're looking for the steak of steaks, this is the place! more

Place to go for serious steaks! 6/28/2010

The atmosphere is great. You know that you're getting good quality service when the wait staff is so knowledgeable about their menu. The porterhouse is the way to go in my opinion. Lunch is good as well. It's definitely a New York staple. Pros: they know steaks Cons: cash only more

BAD customer service spoilt my experience 6/27/2010

I expected great things about this restaurant. We enjoyed the great steaks and waiters were very friendly and efficient. \r \r HOWEVER, the front desk staff / management were extremely rude and totally lacked any customer service. Twice I went up to the front desk with a query on getting a taxi home. Both times the manager and the front office lady looked up at me and then looked away - she started to count the cash in her hands. I waited a few seconds before almost shouting - ""Hello. Can someone help me."" \r \r A restaurant cannot rely on the quality of its food alone. I will not go back and get treated so badly. There are a lot more equally great steak restaurants in Manhattan Pros: Great steaks Cons: Extremely rude front desk staff / management more
