Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Bad Experience 3/8/2005

Three of the four members in our party ordered the porter house and a single cut of meat was delivered to our table which the waiter then cut into thirds. That cost was 50 dollars a piece. more

Oh Wow! 1/1/2005

Old-school, friendly waiter were helpful and talkative, even though we weren't a conversational bunch. Forget that. After the slabs of red juicy steaks came out, who wanted to waste time talking! It was one of the BEST steaks I've ever had. The quality meat made a huge difference, topped by knowledgable cooking. I think this is one of the thing that everyone should experience it, AT LEAST ONCE! more

Sure Bet 11/29/2004

The staff here is excellent. It's very likely you'll see a star too. I recommend the steak for two very highly--ask you waiter for help and you're sure to be pleased. This is truely a mouth-watering experience. Dessert-lover? Homade ""Shlag"" is heavenly--add a dallop to your coffee! And they have their own parking lot!!! Pros: Quality, Staff, Quantity Cons: , Reservations more

#1 Steakhouse! 11/12/2004

Yes, the ambiance is a bit dark and mellow..but itz a steakhouse that has been around for ages and the atmosphere accompanies it all.. I've been to almost every steakhouse in Manhattan and Peter Lugers could never compare to any of them. I've been going to Peter Lugers for ages, and their steak will always be the best.. defiantely recommend it. Pros: resonably priced, good parking, excellent flavors more

The best 11/12/2004

Anyone who bashes this place either has something wrong with them or has stock in some other steakhouse in NY. I went with a party of 7, we all had drinks, tomato and onion salad, slabs of bacon, all the extras and magnificent steaks. We shared three bottles of wine. Everyone had an after dinner drink, and we split two desserts. The bill was $680. After a $160 tip..it came out to $120 a person. We were stuffed to the gills and feeling good. The steak was the best steak I've ever tasted, the bacon was too. The atmosphere was perfect, and the service was incredible. We were seated immediately, we were never rushed, and everything came out in a timely fashion. Absolutely amazing time. Pros: food, atmosphere, service more

Grade: A! 11/4/2004

I'm a fish eating vegetarian (don't laugh!!!) and I watched as my bf and friends chowed down on the steak. They were mystified by how amazing their steak was, if that's any indication how good it is. I ordered the plane no fuss SALMON and it was honestly the best salmon EVER. It was SO TENDER and just AMAZING... I would go back for the salmon alone. The service was great. True, it isn't a 5-star dining establishment, but people don't go for the service. The waiters have been there for YEARS and they know their steak is amazing. I'm just fortunate to live a few blocks away from my Favorite salmon. Pros: SALMON, food, no fuss service Cons: , CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY more

Bare bones is right! 9/4/2004

Don't go if you're expecting 5 stars or want a fancy night out! My fiance LOVED it and I thought it was OK but that's b/c I prefer a fancier setting. No need to get dressed up here. Order the porterhouse and they put it between you and you kind of eat family style at a wooden table. The ""fries"" are good too, as is the bacon appetizer. Go for the experience and see for yourself! Pros: good steak, laid back, not too expensive Cons: , ultra casual more

DISSAPOINTED! 8/11/2004

I HAVE BEEN COMING HERE FOR SUCH A LONG TIME AND I'M SORRY TO SAY A BIT DISSAPOINTED. FIRST, I ORDERED A STEAK FOR TWO MED. WELL DONE IT CAME OUT BURNED AND NOT ONLY THAT, WHEN I ASKED THE WAITER IF HE CAN TAKE IT BACK, HE GAVE ME THIS ATTITUDE AND SAID,""THIS ISN'T WOLFGANG'S"" I RATHER GO TO WOLFGANG'S! THANKS FOR THE RECOMMENDATION! more

Always a great place 7/27/2004

For a great steak in a great venue, this was, is and will remain the place to go. Not always consistent with cooking the steak (we wanted really rare and it was a bit more well done than that) but still fantastic with a great cut and dependable sides. The staff is fantastic. more

Magnificent steak 6/11/2004

I put off going here because of the location for years. But, I will surely be back there soon and often. THIS IS THE BEST STEAK THAT I HAVE EVER HAD. We eat out often and have been to all the ""best"" steakhouses in Manhattan. Price was reasonable for 2 people for a great meal in NY. And the cream spinach was great also. We had the french fries which were also good. But I would skip dessert. Pros: quality, quantity, service Cons: , decor more

No nonsense 6/2/2004

from the no nonsense menu (steak only) to the bare bones furniture, this place is great. some complain about the service (what service?) but the steak is great, (just don't make the mistake of ordering well done!) and I have never had better. more

Steak through my heart! 5/25/2004

Peter Luger Steak House is without a doubt the best -- ANYWHERE! There are a few contenders (I have tried many other steak houses both in New York City and across the country) but I always come to the same conclusion -- if you want the best steak -- go to Luger's! Pros: valet and parking lot, Great Bar, FOOD! Cons: ADVANCE reservation, Cash or Luger charge, ala carte more

Over-rated 5/19/2004

There are at least 15 better steakhouses in NYC than this restaurant that somehow manages to be simplistically pretentious. Appetizers were OK, steak was not as good as what I would have prepared at home on the grill. If you want a better steak -- and the ability to choose your favorite cut of meat (porterhouse only at Luger's) try Smith and Wollensky's on 3rd Avenue. If you want a nice steakhouse atmosphere with comfortable surroundings and a steak superior to Luger's, try Keens Steakhouse in the mid-30s. more

The best 5/4/2004

I don't know how anyone could claim to have eaten a better steak in New York. I've eaten at all of the usuals (Ruth Criss, Sparks, Mortons etc) and none of them come close to Lugers. People who complain about the service are nitpicking. I go here 3-4 times a year and am treated wonderfully everytime. There is no reason for a menu as there is no reason to order anything but the porterhouse, creamed spinach and hash browns. Also, the bacon appetiser is delicious. Pros: Best steak ever more

The best steak in the US 5/3/2004

Peter Lugers, even the name makes me drool. The porterhouse steak on a sizzling plate drenched in butter makes other restaurants wonder isn't all steaks cooked this way. Cream of spinach is absolutely delicious and the waiters are true professionals. I've tried steaks in Chicago (Mortons, Gibsons, Ruth Chris, etc) and Peter Lugers tops them all. Make a reservation now since its a constant hot spot. Pros: Steak, Service, Value more

Out of this world. 5/3/2004

Everything here is superb: service, food, wine list, appetizers, and side dishes. Try the creamed spinach -- it's out of this world! Pros: Food, Service, Wine Cons: Location more

JSOLO 4/25/2004

Our family just had a great time at Peter Luger's. The food was excellent. Our waiter, Bernard, was pleasant and helpful. No looking down his nose when we asked for menus. The steak was great and the pecan pie with ""schlag"" was heavenly. more

Why is Peter Luger so highly rated 3/11/2004

Peter Luger's is truly overrated. The Staff is arogant and selr-impressed. The food is good but not fantastic. The place is crowded and noisy, which would be tolerable if the service wasn't so snarlly. Cons: , Crowded/noisy, food only ok more

The best 3/11/2004

I consider myself a true seak connoisseur having sought out and eaten in the best steak houses all over the USA. There is no question that the sheer quality of the steak in Peter Luger is so far above any other that there is no contest. If you are a real steak lover and want the absolute very best steak prepared in the very best way, there is simply no other choice. Pros: Best steak in the USA Cons: , Ambience so-so, Limited menu more

Top of the Line!! 3/11/2004

Peter Lugers has 2 locations here in NY, and to be honest with you, they are the 2 best steak houses in the tri-state area. The best aged steaks, not to mention the greatest steak sauce available. Should you go, get the steak for 2, cream of spinach and hash browns. You will not be dissappointed. more
