Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Rudest Service Ever!!! 7/2/2007

I was invited to my boyfriend's friend's birthday. 2 of us were not interested in steak, but the waiter would NOT have it and bullied us. I stuck to the flounder, but the other girl had the $50+ steak. After we finished, the waiter flung the change at us telling us to get cabs on the way out.\r \r I got just as great a meal at Smith & Wollensky in Midtown, minus the attitude. Pros: Great tasting food Cons: Extremely rude waiters more

Best Steak In the Most Expensive German Shack 5/31/2007

I think it's important for me to state that this place is not for people who are looking for a great ambiance or service (although I've never had a problem, but people have big issues with it). I've been eating there for the past 20 years and my father was a regular since 1970. This steak is definitely rustic and RARE. DO NOT go in there expecting a medium, cause they will give it to you rare and cook it on the hot plate itself to make it so. I say this as someone who has eaten steak on 6 continents from kobe to a fresh slaughter in brazil, and RARE is the only way to enjoy the taste of the meat. The waiters are an interesting bunch, some have been there for decades and some are newbies, but all of them have a heavy eastern european accent. It's important to remember that these guys have a short attention span and an old man attitude, they can either be dismissive or as warm as a grandfather depending on you. If it looks like a busy day, and it usually is, they're going to be running in every direction, but everytime I've been there they always stop at your table and provide you with what you need. Service is not their business steak is, they've survived more than a hundred years running things like they have. One qualm I have is that their delicious onion rolls have been replaced by a mediocre subsitute, after inquiring persistantly I found out that their usual baker has since retired and have a new baker, its something I will surely miss. I cannot emphasize this more, do not expect this renowned restaurant to treat you like a guest in their home, expect a big perfectly aged greasy slab of meat to share with everyone around the table, followed by a hot cup of coffee and unzipping your pants to make more room for dessert.\r \r *This is not a date place, do not bring a girl to impress her, unless she's already revealed she's crazy for red meat Pros: steak (for steak enthusiasts), bacon, loud family place Cons: steak (for the weak of heart), LOUD family place more

""No Frills"", that's for sure! 5/30/2007

This was my first time at Peter Luger, and I was advised not to expect anything fancy. Having been the Del Frisco's a couple weeks prior, I think I was a little biased. However, I love steak and have been meaning to try this place for a long time. People are not kidding when they describe this place as ""no frills"". Bare wooden tables, bare walls, rickety chairs, pseduo-crabby male waiters are what await you here. My friend and I started with the tomato appetizer...it is good I suppose, for just a plain sliced jumbo tomato w. the ""special sauce"", which is basically dressed up cocktail sauce. The bacon was pretty fantastic, I reccommend it. We ordered the ""steak for two"", and I am not sure if it is the fact that I just don't prefer porter house (too much fat and gristle for me) or if it just wasn't a good steak, but I have to admit I was not a fan. We ordered it medium, and the outside was charred (the bone was black as charcoal and I was biting on a black crust on the outside) and the middle was cold, not warm. They prop it up on one side and all the oil/fat/butter/whatever it was pools down to one end. While some may like this, it was NOT appetizing to me. It looked and tasted like the pan drippings after cooking bacon. I chewed my way through the steak as well as I could, but focused mainly on the french fried potatoes. I understand we may have just gotten a badly cooked steak and I hate to say it, as I really wanted to like this place, but I have had much better steak at other places in NYC. Pros: Old-fashioned vibe, promt seating Cons: Burnt steak, borderline chilly service more

So incredibly overrated and below average 4/27/2007

First, I must confess that I have eaten at many of the best restaurants around the USA. From EVERY restaurant in the Hamptons (Nick and Tonis, The Laundry, Bamboo, etc.), to Nobu, Jean Georges, Palm, etc., to many restaurants in LA , Florida and so on. Never before have I been so taken aback by such a scam. IF you think this place to be exceptional, then you are high, or have not experienced great food. The steaks are not bad, but, all they do is drown it in butter, that's it. Why then, is it the best steak in NY?. There are places that are significantly better for less money, with better service, and actually worth the $. It's amazing how people fall victim to the hype this place generates. They have to be paying these people for those reviews. This place is much worse then V, and they sucked (Although I love Jean George, V was not his high point). People say it's the 'old school charm' of 'incredibly bad service' and 'run down atmosphere' that makes it great. WHY? I can understand the old school charm, but it's not even nice? it looks like a cheap diner, lacks any character whatsoever (I do like Grit, cool run down hole in the wall restaurants can be phenomenal, but not this one)Our waiter was so bad that he kept apologizing at the end, I'm sure you know why. Makes you feel like you're in Disney World, out to experience old German cultural restauranteuring. (note excessive sarcasm in these statements). My salad sucked, cheap store bought dressing with cheap parmesan cheese. Sides were just filled with butter, hmmm sounds familiar. The only other restaurant that I can think of equivalent stature is MR., CHOW. That place, is also a big SCAM. They, like Peter Lugar, scoff you and curse you for looking at a menu. Then they send you out whatever they have left over and you eat it and pay 100$. You would service yourself better by wiping your a** with 100$ bills, or go to the Elbow Room, or tha Palm, Dylan Prime, Union Square cafe, Monkey bar, etc. Much better food. Pros: Steak was OK Cons: Everything more

WORTH EVERY PENNY! 4/25/2007

In regard to the comment made about Peter Lugers, this person cannot be serious. Not only does Peter Luger have the BEST steak anywhere, their other entrees are just as delicious. My husband and I have eaten at many steak houses and Peter Luger is by far the best! If you think you can get a better meal at IHOP then you definitely do not belong at Peter Luger's. I think it's hysterical that it annoy's you that they do not take credit cards. Pay cash or get their credit card. It is really not that difficult. Anyone looking for an excellent steak should go to Peter Luger. Everytime we have been to the Long Island restaurant it has been fabulous service! We will be going back very soon. : ) more

Why Do People Go Here? 4/18/2007

I've eaten at a lot of steakhouses. This one rates at the bottom for two reasons: the steak itself is just bad and the restaurant is WAY overpriced.\r \r While the side items of this place are decent, the steak is very poor. Not only do they always undercook the steak, the meat itself seems to be pretty low quality. The steak is not that tasty, and the famous Peter Luger's sauce just seems to be a mix of cocktail sauce and steak house. \r \r Second, while this place is in NY, it is way overpriced, even for NY. A meal for four without booze costs $300. Pretty exorbitant price considering you can get just a good of a meal at IHOP.\r \r Oh, and the whole ""cash only"" policy this place has isn't cute, it's just annoying. Pros: The bread Cons: Price, steak just isn't good more

I don't care for the patented NY attitude - don't act like you're doing me a favor, please! 2/22/2007

I was kindly invited by a friend who had just received a nice bonus from work. As I live nearby, I rode my bike - I know, kinda unconventional for a place like this. They have an honest-to-goodness bikerack right in front, but while I was chaining my bike, the dude at the door was asking me if I was eating there. I didn't understand him due to his accent, so I asked for clarification. That's when I realized he was asking me because he felt only customers should use the bikerack. As the bikerack is a public item, he had no right suggesting that, which was somewhat confirmed when I asked him why he was asking. Again, I didn't quite understand him, but I just knew. That's pretty lousy.\r \r Inside, the bartender was sneering a bit. Way to make me feel welcomed, O'Henry! Luckily, sitting at a table was much better. The waiters - all young guys - were personable. They even gave us a menu or two when they found out we were newbies. We ordered shrimp cocktail (yawn . . . ), tomatoes and vidalia onions (good with steak sauce but nothing to shout about), the German potatoes (recommended as being like hash browns, but more like home fries, which was fine but nothing special), and creamed spinach (I've had better). \r \r But how was the steak? Porterhouse is not my favorite, but it was ok. The presentation is interesting, and it makes for a nice communal meal. However, I was not blown away.\r \r Best part of the meal, however, was the cheesecake. Despite being full, I am totally glad I ordered it. Replete with a bown of creme fresche (sp?), it was a nice way to end the evening. \r \r Is it all that? No! Was it worth going? Yes . . . once. I am still miffed by the 'tude, although I've tried to be objective all the same . . . FWIW. Pros: I love steak Cons: Get over yourselves and your NY BS more

Best burger I've had in a long time 2/20/2007

I know you don't go here for the burgers but I have to say its the best one I've had in awhile. Also I found the servers to be busy and a bit gruff but also friendly. The woman up front (Delores) was super sweet as well. Great place. Pros: hamburger! steak obviously Cons: hard to get reservation, long waits more

Best steak i tried in the east coast so far! 2/19/2007

im a meat eater, & i have to be honest, i love steak. i dont really care how much it cost, but as long as it is good, i pay, that simple. peter luger is the one i keep talking to my friends & co-workers all the time. I just love them. their porterhouse is the best i found in the east coast! \r their big, juicy tomatoes also a must try, i cant really remember the actual name for it tho, but it is one of those big tomatoes from NJ (i believe so).\r dont bother to try other entree, stick with the steak, i tired their lamb chop, but it is one of the worst i have tried in my life, again, it is a steakhouse, rite?\r phone manner is really lacking there too, kinda rude, but the server i have usually good tho. Pros: best steak Cons: cash only more

got sick after =( 1/29/2007

We were excited to go to peter luger's from all the hype and we were very dissapointed. We went w/ a party of 6 and were late for our reservations due to construction on the bqe. we called for directions and the hostess was worthless. Then when we finally arrived the maitre d was rude to us that we were late. We finally sat and the waiter spoke broken english so had a hard time understanding our very simple order. I don't eat steak so before coming i made sure to check the menu to see if there was anything else for me to eat and there was, the burger. Upon ordering they would not let me order the burger, they said it was a lunch special and for kids at night. This was not right since nowhere on the menu or online did it say this so i spoke to a mgr and explained i came all this way to eat a salad? so they complied but were not nice about it. Later that night I was sick from the food and spent the rest of my wkd recooperating. Overall we were not impressed with the service or food at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. For the value you can go to many other steakhouses that the taste is much better! Pros: free fenced in parking lot w/ attendant Cons: rude hostess/host/mgr/waiters, got sick from food - waay too greasy & fatty more

Great Service 1/25/2007

I didnt think the place could live up to all the hype but it did. The steak had just the right amount of fat....yum. The tomato appetizers were the best tomatoes I ever had. The bacon sides were a meal in itself. But, the best about this place was the service. Our waiter was attentive and knew what he was doing. I was so full and happy when I left this place. more

Best Steak in New York! 1/22/2007

This place was everything I expected and more. The waiter was not the nicest guy, but that was to be expected because people go for the food. And i'm so glad I did. My boyfriend and I started with the 6 shrimp cocktail. Those were the biggest shrimp I have ever seen and they were delicious. We shared the steak for two and it was hands down the best steak we have ever eaten. We ordered it medium and it came out perfectly cooked and had the most delicious charbroiled exterior and most tender and flavoful interior. The creamed spinach was a success with my boyfriend who swore he hated spinach and the German potatoes were just ok. Save some room for dessert because everything comes with a big serving of thick delicious homemade whipped cream. I swear I could have just eaten just that for dessert alone but the ice cream it came on top of was great as well. When dinner is done, the waiter tosses some chocolate covered Peter Luger coins onto the table. The ambiance was great and the food was definitely worth the wait and the crowd, despite having reservations. We can't wait to visit NY again because we this place will definitely be at the top of list of places to visit again. Pros: Best Steak in all of NYC Cons: Make reservations, huge crowd everyday more

What an Experience 1/11/2007

Peter Luger's is more than a steakhouse, its an experience. The restaurant itself is old fashioned, with great wood ceilings and panelled walls that are too rare these days. The steak is hands down the best I've ever had, and I eat a lot of steak. The best cuts of steak are the 'steak for two' and 'steak for three.' If there's four of you, get two orders of steak for two, trust me, it definitely make a difference. Service is simple, they are very unobtrusive, to the point that some consider it to be poor service, but it's really just the way this restaurant is - it's not Daniel. Deserts are great, drinks are great. Make sure to make your reservations at least a month in advance, this place fills up fast. And bring cash! Pros: Great steak, cool place Cons: They only take cash more
