I had high expectations when sitting down at the nicely appointed Flying Fish. The food was exciting to look at but bland tasting. The drinks and oysters on the half shell were ...

Great Apps & Wine List. 3/23/2007

Three of us went to Flying Fish last night for dinner and found that over all it was a worthwhile experience. One of our friends works at a seafood restaurant in Las Vegas so wanted to taste "local seafood" to compare. He left pretty satisfied, but not totally happy. Besides the Ono - which we sent back because it was overcooked and they brought us out another overcooked one - and the Mahi Mahi - which was uninspired and bland - it was great. Next time I would stick to appetizers only. The scallop appetizer was delcious, the oysters perfect (but steer clear of the ginger sorbet), and the Ahi poke fresh and delightful. They have a pretty wonderful wine list as well! Pros: Great wine list and appetizers Cons: Questionable service more

Flying Fish Hovers Due To Lack Of Finesse In Execution 3/21/2007

Using the $25 special, the crab cake was decent and ordinary due to lack of originality and was filled with shredded crab meat that was bland and not sweet. Six Seven's was to die for because it was filled with sweet lump crab meat and had a wonderful flavor to it. The seafood hot dish was good overall but lacked a certain spice to make you say ""wow"". The green curry the secret diner had would have been nice but was deleted. The chef must have changed the menu after the secret diner was there because now you only get 3 mussels that were pitifully small, overcooked fish, tiny scallops, not rich enough broth but 3 good sized shrimp. I wish the cast iron bowl the dish was served in was pipping hot to continually heat the food but was served cold which didn't make any sense other than an asthetic factor. The deep fried bananas were soggy due to a lack of accurate frying temp and a dollop of choc ice cream next it made it worse. The trio of sauces was a nice touch but dipping soggy bananas into it ruined the whole experience. The service was mediocre at best. There was a floating white flake in my white wine which was returned. The double americano cup was sitting on top of a dirty coffee grind stained dish. It took 10 minutes to get my bill and the clearing of plates was adequate. My water was refilled without grace with water splashing everywhere. The complimentary bread served was cold and the butter was rock hard. I left to use an unkept, smelly restroom prior to dessert and returned with my still used napkin that used to sit on my chair now placed on the table. Restaurant Zoe placed a brand new napkin shaped in a configuration that was greatly appreciated. It's the details in service that Flying Fish seemed to have forgotten or maybe I just got stuck with a waitress who's resume consisted of Applebee's. Overall, the dining expericence in a not so fine restaurant more like a high priced fish market that lacked finesse was adequate. more

What in the Heck happened Flying Fish????? 3/4/2007

People use to ask me if I was a food critic. I dine out very frequently and when I do find a great place....I stand up on my soap box and tell everyone, the same if it was bad. Although unofficial, my credentials of being a food critic is only because of part ownership of a very popular restaurant in Seattle. Cons: I had to pay 12 bucks to park in a lot more

People use to ask me if I was a food critic. I dine out very frequently and when I do find a great place....I stand up on my soap box and tell everyone, the same if it was bad. Although unofficial, my credentials of being a food critic is only because of part ownership of a very popular restaurant in Seattle. I use to go to Flying Fish around once every two months to have their blacken peppered dungeness crab. Even if they say it a plate to share, I order one for myself. The taste is fantastic and the vinegar sauce is mouth watering. Before ordering I specifically asked the waiter for the largest crab they had. He said they are all two pound crabs and they charge by the pound. I was so disappointed when the crab came to the table it was more like 1 and a quarter pounds. It was such an effort to break the shell and pick our the meat that I didn't really want to eat it. But my friend and I ate it and joked about the size throughout the dinner. We even put the 2 inch claw on the table which was one of those claws that a crab grows back after loosing one. The service was unusually terrible too. Our waiter kind of ignored us, and when we mentioned about the size of the crab he took it back to the cooks. Their response was they weigh them together and they all come out to be two pounds? They tried to accomodate by offering one dessert. Neither one of us eat desserts, but we took it to go just because they offered it. Will I go back? No.... Flying Fish was on the top of my list of restaurants and now fell to the bottom. Was I just being grouchy that day? No.... my dinner guest was my Pastor....I was on my best behavior. I have eaten at the Flying Fish once and it was great. Their menu changes daily, but their fish is fresh and everyone I was with loved their meals. The service was spectacular. Pros: Great food, great service more

Excellent platters 9/20/2006

I've been a fan of Flying Fish for quite awhile. That said, after reading other reviews, I can understand some differences of opinion. The time I visited and sat upstairs, was not particularly satisfactory. So, I would strongly recommend that you sit in or near the bar. I've always had good service at the bar. The Oyster Happy hour is always good. Because of the hard surfaces, this place does tend to be quite noisy. My favorite dishes are the "Sister in Law mussels" and the Fish Taco platter. These are always tasty and fun for sharing. The warm grappa brownie can be terrific, but I've also had it when it was just mediocre; it's best when it's still molten inside. more
