I had high expectations when sitting down at the nicely appointed Flying Fish. The food was exciting to look at but bland tasting. The drinks and oysters on the half shell were ...

Wow! Great Seafood in Belltown's Late-Night Restaurant 9/21/2007

Fabulous food in a trendy place in Belltown which is open for late-night dinner gave us both big smiles and happy tummies! The beet salad with crumbled blue cheese, crab cakes, and Alaskan halibut were all tasty and satisfying. Service was impeccable - our waitress was soley responsible for handling all the tables in the front of the restaurant as well as those alfresco due to the lateness of the hour. She did a stupendous job keeping everyone happy, and could be seen running from place to place as though it were early morning. She never indicated she was tired, and I was impressed with her energy and attitude as well as her excellent customer service. The manager tried to help her once when all the tables were filled by doing some fast bussing . He quickly removed our bread plates and bread basket even though we had not finished, but she noticed before we could even bat an eyelash and came flying over with new plates, butter, and fresh warm bread! She was even willing to tell us the names of a few other late-night places in the area despite her busy activities and direct us in how to get to a jazz bar nearby. We will return often if the food continues to be as tasty as it was during this visit. I like the idea of the chef consistently changing the menu to coincide with the current veggies of the season and purchasing fresh food from local farmers. Good partnership with great benefits for all, including the patrons. Wonderful restaurant with very good food and interesting presentation. Pros: Great food; Late-night restaurant; Organic dining; Excellent service Cons: Parking is difficult in Belltown more

Best seafood ever 8/31/2007

A former Seattle resident told us (first-time visitors) that Flying Fish had the best seafood he's ever experienced (and he once owned a restaurant as a sideline). It thought he was going out on a limb but he was right. We had a superlative meal and the service was excellent as well (when I asked the server if they had blue-cheese olives for my martini, she said she'd stuff some). Do not miss Flying Fish; the prices were reasonable and on par with other seafood restaurants in the area. Pros: Great seafood and service Cons: None for us. more

Pretty pricey to be so average! 7/25/2007

want to like FF, I really do. The decor is swanky and I like the layout of the bar, kitchen and dining room. The oyster happy hour seems like such a screamin' deal too (and it could be). However, my last two trips were so mediocre I've finally decided I'm done. The oyster happy hour is a good deal provided you don't mind bits of oyster shell with your oyster. It seems the happy hour rush is so frantic and the chefs are in such a hurry that shucking is more like semi-smashing, which leaves you with a crunchy oyster or the annoying task of fishing out the sharp bits. Last night I went for a business dinner and was disappointed with the food. Our server was friendly and attentive and was quick to bring me a new glass of wine when my $12.75/glass arrived smelling funky. For appetizers we got the poke, calamari and dungeoness crab platter. The poke was just so-so. The calamari also wasn't amazing although the wasabi sauce added a much needed zip. The dungeoness crab was so over caked with super salty rub it totally obscured the task of the crab. I was also disappointed to find that 1/3 of the crab didn't fill the shell (nice work on the buying side). For dinner I ordered the wok blackened albacore. It arrived blackened alright, and once again had a crust of overpowering salty rub which served to obscure the taste of the fish again. I found myself gulping water to get the salt taste out of my mouth. It came with a disk of fried white rice and a slightly overcooked piece of bok choy. Don't get me wrong - it wasn't bad food, it just wasn't good food. Thankfully I wasn't picking up the tab because at those prices there is zero value at Flying Fish. Sorry to be a hater but that's my take. Pros: good location, nice decor, fun scene, nice service Cons: totally uninspired food more

I Can Taste The Sea! 4/12/2007

I was on the prowl for a unique taste of seafood. Unfortunately, having grown up in Montana & being a recent Seattle import this subject felt out of my grasp. Luckily after reading some reviews & having it recommended to be by numerous people I decided to try The Flying Fish. It was an adventure of "firsts". A friend and I started at the bar for the Oyster Happy Hour. Which I thought was marvelous. 25cent Oysters on the half shell. What a great deal! It was my first time tasting an oyster so needless to say I was a little nervous. After our oysters came out a very nice server named Claire showed me all the ways to consume an oyster. She recommended different garnishes & types of oysters. It was amazing for somebody to take a moment of their day to help me out. She made me feel very welcome. After sampling our oysters we were seated at a very comfy table. Where we were treated like VIP's. Our server Eric was incredibly friendly & accommodating. He recommended a variety of options & I was truly impressed with his knowledge of the menu. We ended up deciding on the Whole Fried Rockfish. This was SPECTACTULAR! So fun to eat?a sort of ?hands on? experience. It was served with this amazing anchovy dipping sauce & fresh herbs which you roll up into rice papers. We thought for sure that there was no toping that. Oh, how wrong we were. Next we tried the Calamari & the Ahi Tuna. Both were fantastic. The calamari was served with this delectable honey jalape?o sauce which complimented it perfectly. It was by far the best calamari we had ever had. During the meal our server was very attentive to our drinks & making sure we were happy. After finishing everything on the table we were full to the brim. Despite that we decided to tackle the Warm Grappa Brownie. It was exquisite. All in all I would say it was probably the best dining experience I have ever had. Consider me a regular....I can?t wait to try everything they have to offer. Pros: Great service, music, and art! Cons: none! more
