Great Hospital, Amazing Staff 4/5/2011

Merrick Animal Hospital is a great hospital!! I could not imagine taking my pets anywhere else. Dr. Kostiuk is absolutely fantastic!! She is very knowledgable, and takes time to make sure i know exactly what is going on with my baby's. Her support team is also wonderful, especially Michael the technician. He is very courteous, helpful, and extremely bright. He should become a Dr. I always feel that my pets health is in the best of hands with the team at Merrick. Thanks!\r \r An in regards to a previous comment about the cleanliness....its never dirty when I've been there, just needs a little updating. Remember that place has been there for over 100 years. more

Needs a good cleaning 3/9/2011

This week I was in the office for our dog to see the vet, I must say that Merrick has really gone down hill,the place is filthy, whom ever is supposed to be cleaning the exam rooms should be terminated,the filth on the walls is terrible,the floors are disgusting,the baseboards and furnature made me want to throwup. Please clean your hospital! When I bring me pet to a filthy animal hospital it makes me question the level of comittment that the owners have to my pet. Also a little heat in the building would't hurt. This place used to be clean and comfortable a year ago now it is a dump! Find a good cleaning and maintenance person. I am considering looking for a new animal hospital I am afraid my dog will get an infection, fleas or something worse. more

Highly recommend Merrick 1/10/2011

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Bowes for a few years now. Having had dogs for decades and been through four vets now (Berwyn VCA, Blum downtown, Boone in Western Springs), I can say unequivocally that every encounter I've had at Merrick has surpassed the other places I've been to. As a whole, the Drs. and staff have been professional and compassionate. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for an appointment. There has never been more than two others in the waiting area with me when I've gone. When I've called for an appointment and the symptom my dog is having seems strange or urgent, they do not hesitate to get me in right away. They remember me and my dog's history without me having to remind them. I highly recommend Merrick and don't agree with the negative comments posted here. more

Merrick Animal Hospital is slightly above average 10/15/2009

I adopted a pug from a shelter this past May. I have several friends who bring their pets to Merrick, so when she needed care, I called for an appointment and that's where I brought her. My initial reaction was, "Wow, they really care about your pets here!" Based on her behaviors, the shelter believes that my little girl was a puppy mill dog. I explained that to Dr. Murnighan on our first visit. I was impressed with the time he took with her, and with the fact that when I'd emailed him about her being afraid of firecrackers and thunder storms he took the time to respond to the email and attached information on how to help dogs get through thunderstorms. Fast forward to about three weeks ago. I emailed Dr. Murnighan and left three phone messages to find out about getting a tranquilizer for her since my neighbors still seemed to be celebrating July 4th. He never responded to my email, nor did he return any one of the three messages I'd left. To the person who mentioned that Dr. Murnighan more

Merrick Animal Hospital, Dr. Kasper and the Staff A++++++ 10/6/2009

A year ago I had to find a new vet for an old dog, who really didn't like males. I called Merrick and then got me in rather quickly as a new patient with Dr. Kasper. She was sweet and kind to my old dog and did the exam and blood draw on the floor, so not to stress her out. Within the last 2 months I have had to call many times with questions about my dog, because getting her in the car was to difficult and I didn't want to stress her out. Every time I received a call back from Dr. Kasper with great answers to help me out. On October 2, 2009 my 14 1/2 year old dog couldn't get up, soiled herself and me, I knew it was time. I called at 3:30 and they got me in at 4:40 pm, there was nothing more that could be done for her, they made her comfortable and when I was ready we put her down and Dr. Casper said I could stay in the room as long as I needed no one would bother us. Merrick Animal Hospital is a great place to take your pet. 9/28/2009

We went to Dr. Weiser for 20 years for our border collies Sapphire and Shannon. Sapphire lived 6 yrs Shannon 14 1/2 yrs.We had to put Shannon down 12/18/08. Not once in all the years we went had we ever had a bad experience. The staff , especially the receptionist were all friendly , compassionate,and efficient. We lived in Brookfield for 14 yrs. Now in Naperville we used to drive back and forth and never minded when I got to Merrick felt like seeing friends. Still have yet find a vet as good as Dr Weiser. Would love to come back however now have 2 border collies 1 who does not like the car. To all of you how complain about receptionist she does run that office very smoothly, does care was Dr Weiser right arm. Sylvia does listen however she is also working doing her job. Trying to get everyone needs met human and animal. Dr Weiser retirement change for her as well. I miss everyone over there . Say to all of you be patient ,friendly, and relax . You lucky you have such a great staff more

AMAZING STAFF 9/15/2009

I have to say that one of the greatest things about Merrick is the staff. Yes I agree the receptionists can be a bit snippy at times, but I would be too if I was dealing with all those people on a regular basis. The vets are amazing especially Dr. Bowes and Dr. Kasper. I really like the techs they have as well. We took our cat to VCA for awhile and the techs were unfriendly and they just didn't care. The young, short, long haired blond assistant was extremely friendly and caring towards my animals. She would constantly come out to talk to me about my dog whenever she saw me in the waiting room and I could tell that she honestly cared. The tech, with short highlighted blond/brown hair was also very very good at explaining how to use the medication to me. The techs seem to know exactly what they are talking about and unlike a lot of places i've been, they can actually answer questions without creating even more confusion for me. Great Vet's Excellent Care! 9/15/2009

Great Vets, excellent care and doesn't gouge you of your hard earned money. I am reading these reviews and thinking to myself if you are having a problem with a staff member, where is your spine! Did you make a complaint? Or did you just snivel, furthermore, what did you expect on a Saturday with no appointment. Did you ever go to your Medical doctor for yourself on a Saturday without an appointment? How long did you wait? Go to an emergency room? If your not dying, then plan on sitting for at least five hours.This is the best clinic I have been to and have been using them for over 15 years! I adopted two cats from the Naperville Animal League many years ago, brought them home and one was so sick, it wouldn't eat, drooled and could barely walk. I called the animal league and they referred me to their Super Clinic that they use. So made the trek from Brookfield to Naperville with this poor cat. Dr. Weiser please come back! (with an UPDATE) 9/8/2009

We have never been so disappointed in our vet care as when we took our dog into Merrick this weekend. We used to see Dr. Weiser there, who was wonderful, but who sadly has retired. So we started seeing Dr. Murnighan. Our dog became sick this weekend and when I saw blood in his stool I immediately called Merrick. Of course we had no appointment, but they said bring him in right away, that they were booked, but they would see him but we would have to wait til they could sqeeze him. And since Dr. Murnighan was off that day we would have to be seen by another vet as a new patient. Fine. So we rush and get there at 9:30. The waiting room was like grand central station and from talking with some of the other people there, they apparently overbooked. Some people just left before seeing the vet. But we waited, and waited and watched other "emergencies" be called ahead of us, for dogs that had come well after us who also had no appointments. They Saved My Animals!! 7/27/2009

I have had nothing but good experiences with this vet. I wouldn't take my animals anywhere else. I first saw dr. weiser and now I'm seeing dr. bowes who is the most amazing vet ever. Very good bedside manner for the animals too. As far as the receptionists, they know me by first name and the two blondes are extremely nice to me and my animals. I've never seen them be rude to anyone else either. The brunette was rude to me 2x but not after that. I highly recommend this vet. Just because you've had a bad experience at the front desk (which still shocks me) it's well worth it for the quality of care your animals are getting. They've saved my cats life 2x now. more

Your customers keep you in business, make changes to stay in business 7/24/2009

I took my dog for his yearly checkup in June, and was shocked by what I encounter. First, there was no where to sit or even stand for that matter. There were 5 dogs and three cats waiting already, and more waiting to check in or out, people were actually outside to wait. This is a huge a safety issue for the animal and it's owner. I pray that your overbooking does not result in the injury of a pet or human. In the past, I usually waited with the max of three other pets and owners, and we were in with our doctor within 5 minutes not the 25 minutes I waited in June. My second concern was with the new receptionist, she was extremely rude and totally unprofessional. She ignored me for 9 minutes while I was the only one standing in front of her, to pay my bill. She also was screaming that everyone was leaving without paying, gee I wonder why! If I didn't have my son with me to take my pet to the car I would of left too, due to the unsafe conditions, I had to keep looking around so I did not more

Rude, Rude. Ride front desk The vets are terrific but I don't understand why they have Satan's Sisters working at reception. How can the vets let these crazy receptionists handle the office. I have never met such rude employees! They are full of hate for the animal owners that visit the clinic. Just don't get it!!!! more

I can't take the receptionist anymore! 7/15/2009

I thought that I was the only one who thought that one of the receptionists was very rude. The other receptionist is so nice, but wouldn't you know that I was always "helped" by the rude one. I loved the vet (Dr. Bowes), but I am switching now due to the long wait and poor treatment by the staff. more

Great Vet 7/15/2009

I've had nothing but great experiences here. Dr. Shack is very thorough and genuine. She follows up with a phone call after any of my pets have blood work or other procedures. After one of my dog's surgeries I received a follow up call from Dr. Shack and one of the vet techs - very impressed. I also don't feel like they're trying to gouge you with pricing. I feel they want people to be able to afford to take care of their pets. I'm extremely happy that we switched from VCA to Merrick. VCA was always friendly and I have no doubt they have good vets, but I felt they wanted you in and out as quickly as possible, and it's no secret that their pricing is through the roof. more

Great vets, mediocre receptionist 6/22/2009

My animals have seen Dr. Weiser (retired), Dr. Shack and Dr. Merningham, all of whom are excellent. Doctors Shack and Merningham were especially caring and patient with my cats and sympathetic to my worries. They took the time to explain my pets' illnesses and treatments thoroughly and answered all my questions. The price of services is very reasonable. The receptionist with the short brownish hair is very impatient but once you get past her, everything is great. The vet techs are also very kind. more

Excellent Vet! 3/9/2009

I went to Merrick Animal Hospital for the first time and saw Dr. Shack. She was great! I've taken my dogs to at least 15 different veterinarians (in 8 veterinary practices) over the past 40 years and know that it is rare to find a vet who communicates well with both animals and people. I appreciated her thoroughness and willingness to take the time to make sure I understood what was wrong and the options for treatment. more

Rude Staff Member 11/2/2008

I would also have to agree with anyone else who has had a problem with one particular staff member. I love the vets there but I find myself always "crossing my fingers" that one, particularly rude staff member doesn't answer the phone when I call or wait on me when I have to go in. I always just assumed she must be married to one of the vet's...that's the only way she could still have a job there. more

Yes, I would agree with anyone who has commented about the staff. However, I would mention that it is only one staff person that I have encountered who is rude and bossy. The rest are very professional. If I need to call and order a prescription dog food, most staff who answer are nice. If a particular one answers, I know I will be in for a hassle. Don't even bother calling about a prescription dog food on a Saturday, she will really ream you out for calling on a busy day. I put up with this as I like everything else about this place. I do not think that the vets know how bad this is. more

Terrible experience!!! 10/30/2008

After reading all the wonderful reviews for this hospital it really saddens me that I have not had these same pleasant experiences. My family just moved to illinois this summer and when we saw that we had a veterinarians office right around the corner from our new home we were very excited. I called Merrick to let them know that we had just moved into the neighborhood, that we had an elderly boxer and that I would like their fax number so that I could have her records sent to them. The lady on the other end of the phone was completely rude. She made a comment about how busy she was I guess to infer that she really didn't have any time to impress a NEW customer. A few hours later I went into the office to introduce myself in person and get a copy of my dogs shot records for our home office, the same lady that I spoke to on the phone tossed them across the counter at me. When I asked her if all of my dogs shots seemed to be up to date she shrugged her shoulders and said she didn't more

They are the nicest,most caring vets I have ever taken my dogs to. Very knowledgible. Their prices are reasonable and they don't do any unnecessary testing. I feel confident that my pets are well cared for. more
