Pep Boys has been good to me. They do charge top dollar though. I recently had a leaking gas tank that started leaking on the 19th of Sept. 2012. I took it to Pep Boys and told them that the gas tank was leaking. After $160 and three weeks of waiting, they told me that they could not find a gas tank for my 1987 Dodge Dakota. I will donate it to Casa Esperanza and see what it fetches at auction. They did apologize and were very courteous. BTW, my wife had a flat tire in her 2001 Buick Regal LS and since they had sold me four tires a few years ago, they fixed the flat for free two weeks before the leaking fuel tank.\r \r If they didn't charge for labor they wouldn't stay in business. It is seemingly harsh but the alternative is to fix it yourself and maybe have the car fall on you. more

RUINED MY CAR 5/24/2012

I went to pep boys for an oil change. I asked for them to top off all fluids including my break fluid. The person who worked on my car put regular oil in my my brake fluid. Now my car is wrecked. Has anyone tried to sue them? more

Will Go Over Estimate w/o Permission 7/31/2011

This is the second time I have used this Pep Boys and the second time they have gone over a phone estimate without my permission. This time I took my car for an oil change and two tires. I was told a price -- I said it was too high. Pep Boys called me back and said tires were on sale and they would give me 40% off. I was given a final price and I said ok, but that they could not go over that amount. When I went to pick up my care the bill was $100 over the amount I approved of. Turns out the tires were not on sale at the register but that I had to do a mail in rebate. I had specifically told the manager I was on a budget and he said not to worry, I would only need $432. That was a lie -- I needed much more -- a mail in rebate is not the same thing as a final bill to be paid at the register. The other time they did unauthorized work and the bill was more than $250 above what I approved of. To get my car back I had to pay. Bottom line ASK QUESTIONS and get everything in writing. What they tell you on the phone never holds true. Note: I never ever had this type of trouble with Pep Boys in Upland, CA -- 7 years there an no complaints -- but the Fallbrook location really stinks and I will never go back. more

Please Save Your $$ and Time DON'T take your car here 6/24/2011

Worst experience I've had at a mechanic... and I've got an old truck... I've been to A LOT of mechanics! Please if you care anything about your car DON'T GO HERE!!!!!! I took my truck there because it died in Topanga Canyon and Pep boys was the closest shop. When I didn't hear from them in a day about my truck I called to find out what was going on. I was told it was simply a bad battery and I could pick up the truck at any time. That evening after work my buddy drove me out there (2hrs in rush hr.) only to find out the car was actually not running yet and that they'd forgotten to call me. Three days later I called to see what was happening with my car and they still hadn't diagnosed it yet. The next day they called to tell me they'd lost the key. Since that was the ONLY key they had to get another key made. After 5 days they finally had the key made but it took them another 3 days to diagnose the car. I was told because of the trouble they'd only charge me $70 for labor. When I went t more

When I called him he first blamed me for how long everything took because I only had one set of keys (seriously what kind of mechanic loses your keys!?!?!) then told me it he said he'd only charge me $70 for the diagnosis (which is totally inaccurate). On top of all of this the car stop running two days after I got it back from them. I took it to another shop and it was the same problem I supposedly got fixed at Pep Boys! I'll say it again - Please if you care anything about your car DON'T GO HERE more

Bottom Line Service 4/5/2011

My car needed new bolts for my steering column and the left front spring raised for tire clearance. I was quoted at $447 for the job. Then they said they couldn't do the job without replacing the boots on the power steering bringing the total to $967. Then the manager called me up and said it needed some other random part bringing the total to $1700. I just took the car and had a friend fix it for $200 as well as put in a new radiator for $200 bringing my total to $400, which would have cost $3000 at Pep Boys. Go to an independent mechanic that will do the job for 25% the cost of Pep Boys. I also lost two wireless mice($25 value). The loss doesn't matter, but the fact the repair guys stole something so cheap frustrates me. I'm lucky I didn't leave my iPod in the glove compartment like the last guy. more

Worst Pep boys store ever 3/15/2011

I got my car repair at this shop but afte a month of service the car had the same problem again. I went servie to a nearby location to my home who told me that I have to go to the same store. I went back to the services of the store where I had done the repair to get it fixed again but they said they don't have time that weekend and I should come on a weekday. I told them I work and can't come during weekdays so they agreed to take a look and I left my car on Saturday morning.\r I was expecting the call from the store but no body called. Finally I called on Sunday noon time and they said somebdody will call me to update me about the cars condition and what is wrong with the repair they had done earlier. \r I did not get any call back until 5PM on sunday, so I decided to call them again as the store would close at 6PM. They kept me on hold for some time. I decided to go to their store with the help of a friend who was kind enough to drop me at short notice. I reached the store at 5:30 PM and directly went to Mr. Angel who was covering for Martin who was the original person who asked me to leave the car. Mr. Angel said to me that they had no time to look at the car and I would have to come next time. I was shocked with this attitude and carleless answer. They could have called me earlier that I better come next time. They waited until the shop would close. Had I not gone personally my car would have been locked and I would have not been able to go to work on Monday. \r This is the worst experience with the automobile repair I ever had. They are unprofessional and irresponsible.\r Think thrice before you go for repair at this pep boys.\r more

Store Manager Martin saves the day due to lack of employees 3/4/2011

Last month we had our 2004 Toyota serviced at Pep Boys. We had new rear brakes , oil change and check fluids done. We took our car there this morning at 8:30 and told the lady(Maria) at the desk that something was wrong with the brakes and also the engine lite had come on at the same time. The car was there all day. To make the story short we were really upset that they kept our car all day we picked it up at 6:00pm. The store manager Martin was polite enough to have the car finished by six. There was air in the lines which caused the car to have problems. Martin had the problem fixed and we picked up our car. Today they were very short on mechanics so we really can't blame anyone for that. We t hank Martin for solving our problem. more

Buyers beware of service personnel 8/19/2010

My son recently went in to get his tires done. He left his vehicle there and returned only to be told that they needed the special lug nut. Since he did not have the time to wait any longer, drove off disappinted. On leaving, he discovered (as his music on his IPOD did not turn on) looked in his glove box to see paperwork shuffled around and his IPOD stolen out of his vehicle. As he did go back to the store, he explained what happened and was told the person that was working on his vehicle was on a break. He did try to call the police to report this but told this was an internal theft problem through Pep Boys and they were unable to file a report. He did fill out paperwork at Pep Boys but nothing yet. From expecting great service to no service and having his personal property stolen is not what he expected. So buyers - beware - service personnel not to be trusted at all! more

Problems with radiator servicing 2/9/2008

After I had my radiator flushed and fluid refilled at Pep Boys in Woodland Hills, they were unable to tell me what protection my radiator had from freezing. No one there had ever heard of a hydrometer and said the store did not have one. This is very unacceptable service. more
