Great food~ 6/29/2006

We dined there two months ago, and it was fabulous. After reading all the review, I don't know what to get, so we order so many and stuffed ourself sick. We ordered four appetizers: Shrimp Cocktail (HUGE three pieces of shrimp); Oysters Rockefeller (it was creamy yet not greasy); Crab cake (the BEST crab cake I ever had, you must try it; the couple sit next to our table strongly recommended me, and I am so glad I listened!); and Seared Sea Scallops (very tasty, creamy, it comes with toast french bread as your utensil). For side orders, we have Sauteed Spinach - (which is just ok, creamy, not very tasty); and lobster mashed potatoes - (huge portion that we barely touch it, but the lobster on top of the mashed potato was not too dry yet tender, and the mashed potatoes has a hint of the lobster sauce). For the entree, I had Lamb - ( which is the best lamb I ever had, tender, juicy, flavorful, yet not very greasy, very nicely done!). And my friend had the bone-in rib-eye - which is very good too, but not as good as my lamb =b. The only complain I have is my servant, he should inform us that those are more than we can handle; instead of letting us getting more and more. Pros: Lamb, crab cake! Cons: Too dark; service - servant. more

Best steak i EVER had 6/24/2006

Single best dining experience of my life. Excellent food: the bone in filet melted in my mouth and the chef's cut rib eye had remarkable flavor. The lobster mashed potatoes were magnificent, although pricier than the other sides. Service (our waiter Jason) was excellent, very prompt and attentive. If you're looking for a quiet dinner, ask to be seated downstairs. Pros: INCREDIBLE FOOD Cons: Expensive more

best in town, even for a vegetarian 6/23/2006

I go to Mastro's four or five times a year, usually on weekends. I have never been disappointed. Some of the service staff are definitely better than others, but it's a range from "really good" to "absolutely stellar." I have never had to wait for a table, whether I arrived 10 minutes before my reservation or 10 minutes late. I am told the steak is excellent, especially the bone-in filet (not on the menu, if your server doesn't bring it up, ask for it), as are the seafood appetizers. However, I am a vegetarian, so I always order side dishes. I still get the same big sizzling plate as everyone else with my sides tastefully arranged into a meal -- so much nicer than some other places were they just give me a bunch of little dishes that don't really fit on the table. The cocktails and desserts are also excellent (although it is hard to save room for dessert). This is a particularly great place to take a group of people with divergent tastes, because there is pretty much something for everybody. It is a little noisy and a little crowded, but the quality of the food and the service can't be beat. Pros: food, food, food Cons: you won't notice any once you taste the food more

Absolutely fabulous 6/1/2006

My husband and I dined at Mastro's with our good friends for a birthday celebration. And what a celebration it was. The ambience was refreshing with its dark decor and celebrity atmosphere. The bone in filet was better than any steakhouse I have eaten at. We have dined at Peter Lugers, Palm, Ruth Chris & Morton's. The bread basket features incredible soft pretzle rolls. The Crab and truffle Gnocci were incredible. The mushrooms were amazing. The creamed spinach was rich but delish. Skip the Au Gratin potatoes. If you like Brulee, don't miss this elegant classic, a 10. Impressive service, the happy birthday written in chocolate that adorned the desert plate was a lovely touch. a 10+ AND by the way. I just loathe it when people dine top notch and in their review say it is too expensive. What do you expect in Beverly Hills at a top steakhouse? Pros: AMBIENCE, MEAT QUALITY, SIDE DISHES Cons: OVER PRICED VALET, HARD TO SEE MENUS more

The Best Steak in LA 5/29/2006

I just went to Mastro's for the first time, and absolutely adored it. The bone-in filet is hands down the best steak I've had in LA. The wine list was good, and the service was excellent. The prices are high ($40 for an a la carte steak) but worth it for a special occasion. I'd definitely go back. more

Filet-ing groovy 5/24/2006

We are two Englishmen who took some time to sample the culinary delights of American food, on our drive from east to west coasts. For three weeks, we ate at the best and so called best restaurants in each port of call. We have sampled some top nosh, but Mastro's Filet on the bone, was out of this world. The staff were professional, but friendly. Informative but discreet. Great for a romantic, classy meal. more

Bad experience and a rude staff 5/13/2006

Made reservations weeks in advance for a party of 2. We arrived and were greeted by the rudest maitre'd I've ever met and eventually waited over an hour before being pulled aside by the restaurant manager who saw how displeased we were. We eventually got seated and had a pleasant dinner, but the damage was done with our first impression... I don't plan on returning any time soon. Pros: Great food, knowledgable waiters, exciting atmosphere Cons: Rude maitre'd, VERY long wait, Overpriced experience more

excellent overall experience 4/30/2006

called ahead sun night, got a seat right away. maitre'd a bit snooty but whatever. great decor and atmosphere. rich & dark; live music that wasn't overpowering; no shouting needed. service was fairly prompt. oysters rockefeller a bit rich. ribeye and filet were both excellent. this might be funny, but the asparagus was OUTSTANDING. the wine: ordered Mondavi '01 Stag's Leap cabernet ($60). waiter brought it and it was amazing. PROBLEM: at the end i realized it was the wrong bottle, having instead gotten the '02 Stag's Leap Fay ($180). after a civil discussion with our waiter and the manager, we were comp'd the difference without hassle. it was an honest mistake on both ends but the mark of a classy joint is how it's handled. that alone elevates this establishment beyond others. Pros: management, atmosphere, steak Cons: nothing significant more

You make a great steak, but skip the attitude 4/5/2006

Here's the deal: Mastro's has the best steaks in LA, hands down. I'll go back and I know it. But... Is there really a need for the attitude up front? It's worse than at any restaurant in Los Angeles. If one is about lay down one's left arm for a meal, whether that one be Tom Hanks or Joe McNobody, one should be treated with respect. The impression given is that if one does not know the host personally, or have a three picture deal with Paramount, more important work is being interrupted. money is. If I've got an 8 o'clock reservation, I'd like to be seated by 8:15, not pushed to aside so some walk-in casting agent can get my table. Look, once you get to the table everything is Jim Dandy. The service is great. But please, tone it down upfront, you're not royalty. Pros: Steaks, Sides, Desserts Cons: The Front Court more

Bravo!Excellent!Very special restaurant... 2/27/2006

We recently went to Mastro's for my husband's birthday. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly (7:15 on a Friday night). The service was friendly and warm. The atmosphere is fun and elegant without being stuffy. The lobster mashed potatoes and chocolate sin cake are musts. Glasses of wine are generous and the steak was so tender it almost fell apart when I cut through it. I was so impressed with the willing-to-please attitude of this high-end steakhouse. I was shocked when the waiter brought the dessert with Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate since we only mentioned it was my husbands birthday when the reservation was made. We never said anything to the waiter about the birthday. Talk about thoughtful staff! Be prepared to spend some $$$, but know that is well worth it. I recommend requesting a seat upstairs; the windows make a big difference. more
