want to like FF, I really do. The decor is swanky and I like the layout of the bar, kitchen and dining room. The oyster happy hour seems like such a screamin' deal too (and it could be). However, my last two trips were so mediocre I've finally decided I'm done.
The oyster happy hour is a good deal provided you don't mind bits of oyster shell with your oyster. It seems the happy hour rush is so frantic and the chefs are in such a hurry that shucking is more like semi-smashing, which leaves you with a crunchy oyster or the annoying task of fishing out the sharp bits.
Last night I went for a business dinner and was disappointed with the food. Our server was friendly and attentive and was quick to bring me a new glass of wine when my $12.75/glass arrived smelling funky. For appetizers we got the poke, calamari and dungeoness crab platter. The poke was just so-so. The calamari also wasn't amazing although the wasabi sauce added a much needed zip. The dungeoness crab was so over caked with super salty rub it totally obscured the task of the crab. I was also disappointed to find that 1/3 of the crab didn't fill the shell (nice work on the buying side). For dinner I ordered the wok blackened albacore. It arrived blackened alright, and once again had a crust of overpowering salty rub which served to obscure the taste of the fish again. I found myself gulping water to get the salt taste out of my mouth. It came with a disk of fried white rice and a slightly overcooked piece of bok choy.
Don't get me wrong - it wasn't bad food, it just wasn't good food. Thankfully I wasn't picking up the tab because at those prices there is zero value at Flying Fish. Sorry to be a hater but that's my take.
Pros: good location, nice decor, fun scene, nice service
Cons: totally uninspired food
