Ignore everything negative. This is a great place. And there are not parking meters nearby. 6/24/2008

It is not true that the food at Tangerine is disappointing, nor is the service, the incredibly friendly staff, or the incredibly capable manager who frankly could be at Wynn Las Vegas directing fine dining.\r Any restaurant will seek to protect and preserve their best customers. That's good business, and sometimes we all have to put up with that. One night a famous movie star went to Tangerine. His handler was incensed they would not give him special treatment. To me, honoring your regulars and not feigning over stars is the very best of San Francisco's character..or what's left of it. I know Herb Caen would approve of Tangerine that night. The person complaining about friends of the owner getting special treatment was in fact rude to one of the sweetest waitpersons I have ever known in order to get his way. It was a difficult situation, and we (the ""friends of the owner"") took another table without fuss. So, if you want yummy food and lovely service, go to Tangerine.\r more

We are so glad Tangerine is in our neighborhood. We love to walk there, take all our visitors there, celebrate our lives there. The food is great (the duck rolls our absolute fave!), and very well-priced, but we return time after time for the people: co-owner and chef Sean, the ever-gracious host Katherine, and the flawless waitstaff. Tangerine is at once a lovely place for a romantic occasion, and a great spot for a spontaneous meal. We'll be back! Pros: good for a large group at dinner, if you make reservations. less noisy than many other restaurants. Cons: brunch is so popular that might have to wait. come a bit past prime time, or chill out with a mimosa. great people-watching, and it's always worth the wait. more

Great atmosphere, food is divine, staff very pleasant 5/28/2008

I stumbled into Tangerine with two friends last night after we were wandering around the Castro and our stomachs started growling. The menu looked tasty and we literally wanted to try everything on it, so we each ordered two appetizers, a bottle of wine and a side of bok choy. Everything we tried - lamb lollipops, chicken and onion cakes, smoked salmon cakes, the ribes, etc. - besides the corn fritters, was quite tasty, and the service was superb. We had this adorable Brazilian waiter, Fabiano, and I wished I could have taken him home with the meal, he was so sweet. Ask for him if you decide to dine here! I haven't tried Tangerine's brunch, but the menu was pretty appetizing. Pros: great staff, food is delicious Cons: need a reservation on weekends, tables are generally full more

Very disappointed 5/4/2008

After reading the reviews, I called Tangerine to see if I could make a reservation for a large group for Sunday brunch. I was told that the restaurant doesn't take reservations -- no exceptions -- and that the best way to get a good table was to arrive early.\r \r Two weeks later, I arrived nearly an hour before the restaurant opened, and waited outside. There are two nice tables near the window alcove, separate from the more crowded, noisy dining area. Right before opening the doors, a waiter put a ""reserved"" sign on one of the tables. \r \r We went in and explained that we'd been waiting for that specific table, and were told that two ""friends of the owners always sat there"" and that we couldn't have the table (the owner's friends, two people, arrived about 15 minutes after the doors opened, expecting to have the large table to themselves). I explained my side of the story and -- long story short -- we were finally able to get the table we had waited so long for, but the manager made it very clear that she thought I was in the wrong and that the ""two regulars"" had a right to the table.\r \r Once we were seated, the service was good, quick and friendly. We were the first ones in at 10:00, and the place was full with a line of people waiting by 10:30. We appreciated the range of choices on the brunch menu.\r \r The food, itself, was disappointing. Not bad, by any means, but certainly not exceptional or even very memorable. The concensus of our group was that diners should stick to the basics -- omelettes, pancakes and waffles, and not try the ""unique"" (and not very good) dishes such as macaronni & corn pancakes, fritattas, or even the eggs benedict. \r \r Given the way our party was treated by the manager and the double standard regarding reservations, I will never go back to this restaurant, and will steer everyone I know away from it.\r \r Let the ""regulars"" have their Tangerine -- there are hundreds of places in this city with much better food and atmosphere. Pros: If you're a friend of the owner, you will be treated well... Cons: ...if you're not, best go somewhere else more

Good food, cozy place! 12/7/2007

This was my 2nd time to Tangerine and the food was consistently good. I ordered the Sea Bass, which came out perfect. The fish was sweet and moist. It was really tasty on top of the bed of rice. My friend ordered the pork chop and it tasted better than last time. The meat was perfectly cooked and marinated. We were really surprised by the crab cakes, fluffy and soft, they were really good. The best appetizer has to be the clams and mussels. Save the bread and sauce for dipping. We saw the next table doing the same. The calamari was not too bad, though I found it a bit chewy. We had a great house white wine and completed our meal with the tiramisu. It was creamy and rich, but the chocolate was not too bitter or over powering. We came last Friday on a really cold night but they had a heat lamp to keep the place warm and cozy. The orange glow of the place really lets the diners relax and enjoy their meals. I noticed the ceiling fan was on to keep the air circulating which is really nice because you never want to smell like kitchen food like in other places in San Francisco. Nicely done. Pros: Clean, warm and cozy ambience, good appetizers, terrific main dishes Cons: Parking, small and limited seating more

Wish Tangerine Was Located Here in Seattle! 9/21/2007

We made our 3rd visit to San Francisco Aug 30, 2007 and ate at Tangerine on September 4th. It quickly became our favorite Bay area restaurant. WOW! The stuffed portobellas are divine - I can't emphasize this enough. So were the spicy corn fritters and the yam cakes! It was hard to determine which we loved most. Entrees were the Seabass Edamame and Prawn Pasta with Spicy Anchovy, both extraordinary in presentation and taste. Service was impeccable. We did not have reservations, but we were accommodated with a window table even though the restaurant was quickly filling with those who did. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive despite being quite busy with a full house. Although the restaurant is small, we were comfortable in our space and had enough privacy. The decor is intimate and warm with hues of tangerine amidst perfect lighting. A huge floral display at the entrance is enchanting, tangerine colored lilies which I wanted to photograph. I took a business card when we left so I could write a note to the owner/chef thanking him for our wonderful dining experience and pleading for him to consider opening a restaurant in Seattle! We miss Tangerine already and are looking forward to our return visit. Pros: Excellent food and service; Creative menu; Large portions; Good presentation; Reasonable Prices Cons: Parking more

Brunch is back 8/11/2007

Check this out - We arrived with what seemed to be the masses for Saturday Brunch, around 11 am. We were seated within minutes. Our waitress was fantastic - really friendly but not intrusive! The menu selection for a saturday brunch totally rocked! Each dish was excellent with combination, portion, and presentation too! What a great neighborhood haunt!!! This is definitely on my list. Look out Tangerine, you have a new regular customer!! more

Great Brunch! 8/11/2007

Tangerine is always my 1st choice for weekend brunch. The omelets and pancakes are fantastic! My favorite is the blue crab omelet which has a ton of crab meat in it w/ a small amount of cheese (I think swiss) and a dollop of guacamole on top. The mimosas and OJ are amazingly fresh. The ambiance is great; very open and bright or you can sit outside on sunny days. I've had dinner there almost 2 years ago and enjoyed it too! Pros: food and ambience Cons: can be a wait for a table and food due to crowd more

Nice waitstaff but truly horrid food 5/31/2007

Both the execution and presentation of all of our dishes was really off - sea bass on a bed of spinach with black bean sauce and jasmine rice sounded great but when it came - the proportions were garguntuan, the sea bass was oily on the outside, slightly undercooked in spots and completely flavorless which sat on top of a pile of huge old spinah leaves that had become wilted (in an icky way) by the very salty black bean sauce - all of which sat on what must have been 4 cups of cooked rice. The seafood stew was also a gigantic bowl of scallops, callamari, shrimp, etc. in a sauce that was very mediocre. We had one appetizer that was okay - a stuffed shitake mushroom; however it came deep-fried, which none of us remembered even being mentioned in the description of the dish on the menu. The crab cake appetizer was just okay - not very fresh tasting. And why would an asian-inspired restaurant that serves tea in great iron pots use BAGGED tea? Maybe their brunch is better but for the prices they charge for dinner and the quality of the food, I can't believe they have stayed in business this long. Pros: Nice Waitstaff Cons: Food, price more
