Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

Worst

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, consid...

best sushi in the valley 2/19/2007

going out for sushi is always an experience, and Katsuya is definitley the best one i have had. i've tried sushi at many different restaurants, from LA to Orange County and this one is my favorite. Prices are reasonable, sushi is fresh, and service is good. I have taken several of my friends here, and they all agree that it is the best sushi they have had. My boyfriend and I always take our out of town guests here when they want sushi, and so far everyone loves it! The fish is so fresh, it practically melts in your mouth. Among my favorites are the spicy tuna on crispy rice, the albacore sashimi appetizer with crispy onions, the robert roll (avocado, spicy tuna, lobster, shrimp), and the rock shrimp tempura. Don't be surprised if you run into some celebs, i've seen several in my many times here. definitley try to make reservations, or you could be waiting for quite some time, even on weeknights. the service is prompt, mostly because i think they just want to feed you and get you out of there to make room for the next person. but the wait staff is still nice and helpful. Pros: sushi, sushi, sushi....and the prices are very reasonable Cons: always a long wait! more

Entertainment Industry Insiders 2/6/2007

I am very satisfied with a sushi restaurant if I am served a good spicy tuna roll and Katsu-ya certainly delivers. I worked for a top entertainment executive - a guy who only ate at the best restaurants - and, without fail, his choice of sushi bar for a business lunch was always Katsu-ya. My co-workers and I loved the place, too. Pros: Some of the best sushi in L.A. Cons: Self-parking is impossible more

RUDE Service. NOT accomodating! 12/17/2006

The sushi is quite good but the service just ruined everything. Our waiter was not accomodating at all and shook his head at us more than once. He gave really vague answers to our questions about the dishes we asked about. One of the dishes (panko tuna) was not specified as raw and asked if they could cook it through a little more. They said they couldn't do that ?!?!?!?! There are enough restaurants with great sushi in LA so I won't be going back to this one. Do yourself a favor and save yourself from a night of rude service and unfriendliness. more

Sushi + glamour scene for a nice evening in town 11/11/2006

The first thing you'll notice about Katsuya is the crowd. Mostly elegant, rarely underdressed, and definitely filthy wealthy. Ferraris, Porsches and Aston Martins are aligned in front of the restaurant to display the kind of clientele this restaurant is looking for.\r Many trendy places in L.A cannot keep up with the quality of the food. I am a sushi fan, and I have to say that these are among the best sushis I ever had. Another thing: even if some review consider the place incredibly expensive, let me disagree. For the quantity and the quality of the food served, the price is just right. I was surprised the bill was not higher. I recommand this place for its food and its ambience, even if the service is so-so (for a place of this standing).\r One last comment : valets are HORRIBLE. They welcomed me uber-nicely when I gave them my nice convertible to park, but have been extremely rude to my friend who came in a less-shiny and pretentious car... that is not what valet should be about... you guys drive cars for god's sake ! You cannot afford to give ""the look"" at a customer because his car is less expensive than a jag! So, if you have dinner at Katsuya, don't hesitate to be rude with the valets :)\r But, aside from that, a good experience. more

Spicey Tuna, Rock Shrimp 11/1/2006

This is one of the best reasonably priced sushi restaurants I have been to. I cannot wait for a reason to drive to studio city just so I can eat here. It is always busy from the moment it opens. Try everything it is great. The only thing I disliked is that they were not very easy to get them to make special rolls the way you want them. We just wanted avocado added to a roll and they didn't want to do it. Overall this is a great inexpensive sushi restaurant. more

Salmon caviar sushi, tuna crispy rice - 10/31/2006

No reservations, limited parking, line out the front door...stop your kvetching, the sushi here is to die for. Service is brisk and not too friendly but once again, stop your kvetching and try the house specialities which you can read on a special menu that comes to the table. As soon as you get it, order a handful of those and prepare to tuck in! My favorites ar ethe salmon caviar sushi, the tuna tartare (which came out more like tuna sashimi with an elegant french creamy mustard sauce), the tuna on crispy rice (order plenty, you will fight over them), and I think we had another item that invovled lobster but by that point, I was in sushi bliss heaven. This sushi place may be in a strip mall but I'd rather go here instead of lining up with the skeletons at the new Brentwood location. more

omg the best sushi! 10/9/2006

I drive over the hill all the time for KY! Make sure you make reservations in advance or you will be waiting forever. Doesn't matter what time you go there will be a wait! Make sure you order a honey hand roll, it's not on any of the menus and it is by far the best one...or at least my favorite! It's soy paper, rice, spicy tuna, spicy shrimp and avocado...I think I need one right now! Other must haves are the spicy tuna on crispy rice, spicy albacore sashimi w/crispy onions, spicy shrimp roll w/soy paper, scallops w/foie gras, robert roll (similar to honey), and the tuna sashimi with warm spinach. Pros: super yummy sushi Cons: super long wait more

Very Rush! 10/8/2006

We went last Friday night for my daughter's Birhtday dinner. She adsolutely loves sushi so I thought this would be a real treat for her. It turns out she was not too thrill about this place. I was hoping to order the Omasake but the waitress talked us out of it. That's was a mistake! Instead she suggested we should order like 8 dish and we can all share. I personally did not like their rock shrimp tempura! It's too salty and heavy for my taste. Their spicy tuna crab roll was very good! The Tuna sticky rice was not all that great. We also tried 3 different deserts and they were all good. Overall I would give this place an 8. Would I go back probably not ony because the place gets way too crowded! I did make a reservation and they seated us right away with no way. If you really want to try this place, I would suggest go early. Pros: Special are good! Cons: Too busy and very rush! more

ON THE DECLINE 10/6/2006

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and Katsu himself used to make the sushi. They have the best tasting sushi in town and the freshest fish. HOWEVER - over the last year the portions have gone WAY down... Crispy rice spice tuna has turned into JUST that and in THAT order CRISPY RICE spicy tuna (just a dab on top now - and the rice overwhelms the taste). The once nice slices of Seared Tuna in Mustard sauce are little tiny pieces now no larger than half your thumb. Lastly, my favorite Baked Crab Roll used to contain real crab meat with a small portion of fake surimi...it is not mostly surimi and very little at that...again, if you get this as a cut roll (as I used to) all u get is a lot of rice with a tiny dot of crab in the middle...I am now forced to order the hand roll just to taste some crabmeat.\r \r They are raking in a fortune here and opening so many new restaurants I find it hard to believe they are having to pull back on their portion sizes and compensating with RICE!. I am looking for a new sushi place - any suggestions? more

if you want hyped up sushi... 9/22/2006

Okay, long wait. Not a problem. Unimpressive sushi..a problem. I expected that this would be the haven of heavenly sushi, being a sushi lover, but was sadly disappointed. I think with really good sushi, you are supposed to come out the restaurant feeling better than you went in, but this certainly wasn't the case. I came out with an empty wallet, cursing over how long I had to wait, how the sushi was crumbling before I barely picked it up with chopsticks and overall how overrated the whole experience was. Their crab rolls rock, I have to admit, but it's just not worth it. The service can be described better by "rushed", not "fast" because they want you to get out your seat so the next person can eat sushi. Not very intimate or amiable environment at all. Pros: crab rolls!! Cons: long wait, noisy, do you like crying babies next to you while eating sushi? more
