Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

Worst

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, consid...

Rock Shrimp Tempura ROCKS! 9/8/2006

I heart Sushi Katsu-ya for many reasons. I can wax poetics over the rock shrimp in creamy spicy sauce solo, or, when they throw it on top of the spicy tuna roll, I can't even begin to explain the taste sensation. All the specialty dishes; seared albacore with crispy onion, crispy sesame tuna, spicy tuna on crispy rice. My, oh my! The honey roll is also quite divine and the service is always prompt and correct. Try the japanese shishito (green peppers) instead of everyday edamame and you are guaranteed to start your meal offl with a kick. Oh, and don't forget to make a reservation plenty in advance! Pros: Inventive dishes, prompt service, fair prices Cons: Make reservation plenty of days in advance more

Tasty... worth it? You decide. 8/24/2006

It's true - it's not the place for sushi purists. Get the things on the menu that are unique to Katsu-ya. Spicy tuna on crispy rice, definitely. Rock shrimp topped spicy tuna roll. Crispy onion. I visited the Brentwood location and despite having a reservation I still had quite a long wait - and this was on a wednesday. Take advantage of the time and order a grapefruit martini from the bar. Everything is tasty if you're not expecting traditional sashimi. more

You wont find fresher sushi 8/20/2006

My favorite sushi place by far. Its always packed so expect to wait an hour.. but its worth it. The chef prepares tons of specials that are out of this world. Each week I try something new and I am never disappointed. Pros: the best sushi in the valley Cons: long wait, parking more

Best sushi in town 8/11/2006

I LOVE SUSHI and Katsu-ya Studio City is my personal favorite. It's consistently the best sushi in town and the Super Toro is the single best sushi I've had on the west coast. The new Brentwood restaurant is beautiful and tasty, but still doesn't compare to the small Studio City joint. Pros: Incredible fish and specials Cons: Small and busy, often an hour wait more

Not for the sushi purist 7/31/2006

I should have read the reviews more closely and realized this is not the place for the sushi purist. We ordered what we sit at the bar for..What we got was almost a defiance from the sushi chef for trying to keep it pure...toro came brushed with soy sauce...bonito doused with soy sauce...sweet shrimp heads that came cold because they sat behind the bar while the tail was prepared. Our orders took a backseat to the fancier rolls. Ike was closed and Gen was too far for this evening. This place seemed like a factory..got sauce? Pros: soy sauce Cons: soy sauce more

I love, love, love this place..and so does everyone else. Always crowded and busy. Efficient service. Wonderful, fresh, quality sushi. Go there for the food first, the celebs second. more

Doesn't live up to the hype 5/27/2006

Based on all of the reviews, one would expect it would be worth the wait, especially if you ordered off the ""special board."" From the moment we arrived, I felt as we were being pushed out of the restaurant and the entire dinner felt rushed. Although some of the specials were good, most were drowned in sauce and the sushi was rather typical. A fair deal, but not worth the trip. Pros: Reasonably priced Cons: Ambience more

Please Expand! 5/11/2006

This USED to be our #1 Favorite sushi place in LA... and the food is STILL divine... But the ambience is like a train wreck! It's just waaaay too crowded - I still hear ringing in my ears like after a rock concert. And the poor waiters look like they're running a marathon, there's no way they can get your order right. The new Tarzana restaurant hasn't helped witht reservation frenzy here, or shorthened the mile-long line outside this place (since the food really is that good). PLEASE, Please, please expand the place. Isn't there a 2nd floor?? Pros: Best sushi ever Cons: Worst ambience more

Delicious 2/28/2006

We find a way to visit Katsu-Ya every week - either location is excellent. Favorites: Crispy rice with spicy tuna; crab hand roll; Crispy sesame tuna (if you say ""no avocado"" you get much more tuna!); Tuna with warm spinach. The chefs are really friendly and helpful, so we recommend sitting at the sushi bar. And if you have room, the green tea tempura ice cream is wonderful! Arrive at 5:30 and beat the wait! Pros: Fresh fish, Clever presentation, Friendly staff Cons: Waiting more

Katsu-ya is always packed with its loyal following, but it's unquestionably worth the wait. The good-looking Valley crowd doesn't even mind putting up with Hollywood types...
