Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

Worst

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, consid...

Rock and Roll 8/9/2007

Yeah it's a little $$$ but it's definately good. Go with someone assertive- lol- and sit at the bar. You'll get rocking service, interact with the sushi masters, and have a good noisy shoulder to shoulder dining heck of a time. I went with a friend that is in several times a week, and it's as good as he said it was. Especially the spicy tuna with crispy fried onions and jalapeno slivers on top... I have fantasies about that dish. So if you're looking for your average expensive dining experience with Vegas-friendly attentive waitstaff and sculpturesque food and a quiet little booth to keep ""all that noise"" out (like the other reviewers seem to be), the this place is not for you. But if you're looking for something tasty, have an open mind and stomach, and need an adventure that you'll remember, then you've come to the spot! more

Best?! I think NOT. 6/25/2007

Go if you must, but don?t expect much from this place? especially don?t base it on the grand 28-pt score given by Zagat (as we mistook it for). We?ve gone to our fair share of sushi bars and 25-pt plus Zagat recommendations all over the world, but this takes the cake for mistaken identities. As you would/should know, taste, freshness, and presentation are very big parts of any sushi dining experience. However, Katsu-ya fell short of all. Taste: We?d have been better off crossing the street to Todai. Freshness: Maybe? Presentation: Perhaps it?s because it?s a ?hole in the wall,? but there was definitely no ?dress to impress? factor with this one (unless, of course, you count the Hollywood-type patrons that worship this place). We agree with the last reviewer, if this is indeed the BEST sushi place in Los Angeles, shot us now! more

If this is the best sushi place in all of Los Angeles...shoot me now... 6/24/2007

I have been in LA for a couple of years and have yet to find sushi that is anything close to what I used to find up In San Francisco. With all the rave reviews I thought I would try Katsu-ya and you know what...it was totally mediocre. Some of the appetizers were good, but at that price they damn well better be good. Fortunately we made a reservation, so we didn't have to wait for a seat, but it seemed like as soon as they sat us down they were rushing to get us out. Not a pleasant dinning experience at all. I just don't see what all the fuss is all about. I had a hard time giving this three stars, but since three stars means ""average"" I guess it fits. Leaving and seeing all those people waiting to get in made me wonder if they lacked tastebuds or if they just had way too much cash to burn... more

Best Sushi Ever! 5/1/2007

This is by far the best Sushi I have had in Los Angeles. Nothing can compare. Many sushi places try to copy this restaurants specials, particularly the spicy tuna on crispy rice dish. If you have not tried this place it?s a must. Best way to get seated is to come early and sit at the sushi bar. Pros: Delicious Cons: Hard to get seated without a reservation more

BEST SUSHI, you WONT be sorry! 3/28/2007

My first impluse is to write about every single dish and then some, creating a novel on here. But, all you need to know is that the service is great and the sushi. EXTRAORDINARY! I have turned on at LEAST 10 people to this place, all who keep going back for more. Every single thing on the menu is divine. The crispy rice tuna, the baked crab roll, the crispy albacore.. just to name a few . Trust me, have some of Katsu-ya's sushi and you WILL be going back for more. I've been a loyal customer for about 5 years and have yet to find anything comparable. Prices are great. It's not a posh place but nobody seems to care as the fish is top notch. Treat yourself! oh! You'll always want to make a reservation! Pros: Every special dish down to the basic sushi.. phenominal! Cons: my wallet cant afford to keep up with my habit here! more

Best Sushi in LA 3/23/2007

You've probably heard that so many sushi restaurants are ""the best in LA"". My description of Katsu Ya in Studio City as such isn't based on my sole perception, but the reaction I get whenever I mention it to anyone. Hands down, it ranks as everyone's favorite sushi spot, and with good reason. The items on their menu are unique and mouthwatering, the spicy tuna on crispy rice is savory, the crispy onion on seared albacore is fantastic. The restaurant itself has a rustic charm to it, although the only drawback is that it's located in the corner of a stripmall. When I heard that Nobu was located in a strip mall in Malibu, it was a huge drawback, but once you're inside KatsuYa in Studio City - and see the line outside it at the valet - it's a different story. Sure, you might catch a star sighting or two there (e.g., Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz) but the star-sighting isn't the reason to go here. It's the quality of the food. Hands down the BEST sushi in LA. Don't think - just go. And definitely make a reservation. :) Pros: Amazing sushi, variety of sushi options, service Cons: Located in strip mall more

i'll tell it like it is 2/27/2007

The unimpressive standard pre-placed paper menu had me fearful of what i was about to experience - particularly after a 30 minute wait. I had set foot out of my cold apartment intendning to eat a big all you can eat meal at Midori only to find that it was closed - luckily on ventura you can bet that a sushi store will turn up in less than a five minute walk, and Katsu-ya did. We were offered beverages during the wait - which adds points to my experience. Once the hot towels were set and the waitress set up the portable specials menu I was able to breath easier ... the special menu items were new, unique and inticing . I typically like servers to recommend more popular but also risky dishes - i let the waitress go to town and homegirl was ON POINT. I had albacore topped with crunchy, almost burnt, onions in terrific sauce (but not too overbearing so as to enjoy the fish, unlike i find the too thick and too sweet ponzu to be), the crispy rice special, shitake mushroom clams, mozarella crab (i know its not quite right to eat dairy with sush - i cringe at the thought of a philly roll - i but it was actually good), an excellent crab roll and the lives-up-to-every-good-review honey roll. Ah, and the fried calamari that is comprised of about 6 thick and juicy pieces accompanied by a light sauce. All were MOUTH WATERING. The server actually managed a great meal for the four of us, stopping us when she thought we had ordered enough for our first round, and suggesting one last hand roll (the honey) when we were borderline full, but wanted one more dish - we even did dessert. Great pairing of green tea ice cream and warm chocolate flourless torte-like cake. .The fish seemed of good quality - although I find it more difficult to review when eating in rolls and such. Overall I was impressed and look forward to returning - this week. Four of us each had a beer or sake, all of the above (and a standard caterpillar roll) and dessert paid $40 each. Well worth it, to me. Pros: Not your average sushi dishes more
