Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

The Best Sushi in Southern California 5/21/2008

When I first moved to Studio City, a friend told me, "the best sushi in Southern California is in Studio City!" When I asked where specifically, he told me Katsuya. That was probably the best advice I've received to date. Time and again, I've had the most amazing meals at Katsuya. I love trying new things and the wait staff always offers fantastic suggestions! I especially love the yellowtail jalapeno sashimi and lobster dynamite. Really, you'd be hard-pressed to find something BAD on the menu. Pros: Sushi, Sake, & Beer! Cons: Always packed; having to wait for a table more

A penny tip....that's what I left them.... 4/10/2008

A penny tip....that's what I left them....\r the service was so bad and they were rushing us to leave- there is nothing great about this overrated place -\r I think before Internet sights like this(citysearch) , reviewers were ""paid"" to write rave reviews in food, perhaps? sake? \r something !! because it doesn't make sense why this place would have 4 stars. yuk. Cons: save your money, sanity more

Don't believe the hype. 4/6/2008

My husband and I decided to check out why this sushi spot garners so much attention and such a loyal following. We made an 8 p.m. reservation for a Saturday night and were seated rather promptly. We thought the night was getting off to a fine start until we were asked for our drink order without seeing a menu. When asked for a menu the bus girl huffed and then stomped off to retrieve us one. We sat perplexed for several minutes since we were without a dinner menu and were offered no explanation of the specials. We needed to request a menu from our server as well! The sushi itself was nothing special -- there are unassuming places in our neighborhood and on Sawtelle that offer sushi that is much fresher and impressive. The spicy tuna on rice cake is rather scrumptious, but the sushi, sashimi and the few rolls we ordered were not anything mind blowing or crave worthy.\r Toward the end of our meal, when the line out the door proceeded to form, our servers and the host seemed to rush us as we sipped our remaining hot sake. I do not expect to return to this spot again; I simply do not understand the hype. We know several other sushi spots that offer better customer service and mouth-watering fish. Pros: spicy tuna on crispy rice cake Cons: service, overall experience, value more

terrible service and attitude - not worth it 3/19/2008

Am so glad I can vent about Katsuya. Someone gave me $200 certificates so we called to make a reservation and they said if we got there at 6:30 we could walk in. No chance. We were turned away uncermoniously...and very upset. We have had numerous such experiences at this highly overrated place. The sushi is good but not good enough to warrant being with people who are too full of themselves to know who the customer is. I will probably ask them if they will cash my certificates and let others wait, and wait and wait... Pros: if you can get in the sushi is ok Cons: terrible service all the way around more

Too much hype 12/15/2007

I am not sure why people are waiting so long to eat at this place. The much talked about woman sushi chef has absolutely no personality and not even one of the sushi chefs even cracked a smile at all for the 2hr we were there. The fried onions with albacore was a mushy mess, could not even finish it. We kept ordering other things off the ""specials menu"" but it never got any better. The sashimi was okay, everything else was a disappointment. Waiting for the valet is also a nightmare. Down the street is Matsuda and it is much friendlier with more inventive and tastier dishes. Give it a try. This place is way over rated. Pros: cannot think of any Cons: food, parking, not friendly more

The best sushi in the valley! 11/1/2007

This is the best sushi I've had. The service is good at best only due to mass amounts of people eating in one place. The ambiance is clean and simple. I recommend the seared ahi tuna with fried onions on top!! I also suggest making a reservation so you don't have to wait hours for a table. Pros: food Cons: loud more

All hype - average sushi 8/18/2007

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, considering the hype and popularity of the place. My most recent (and certainly last) visit there, I waited for nearly an hour for my cramped little table, then waited ten minutes for the waitress, then another thirty to get my order, which was mediocre. The rolls are too loose and fall apart, and the fish was rubbery. I told my waitress the rolls were falling apart, and she just told me that ""that's how they're made"". The price is way too much for the quality. Pros: Decent sake. Cons: Slow service, average food, fixed-price valet parking. more

Katsu-ya is always packed with its loyal following, but it's unquestionably worth the wait. The good-looking Valley crowd doesn't even mind putting up with Hollywood types...
