The first thing you'll notice about Katsuya is the crowd. Mostly elegant, rarely underdressed, and definitely filthy wealthy. Ferraris, Porsches and Aston Martins are aligned in front of the restaurant to display the kind of clientele this restaurant is looking for.
Many trendy places in L.A cannot keep up with the quality of the food. I am a sushi fan, and I have to say that these are among the best sushis I ever had. Another thing: even if some review consider the place incredibly expensive, let me disagree. For the quantity and the quality of the food served, the price is just right. I was surprised the bill was not higher. I recommand this place for its food and its ambience, even if the service is so-so (for a place of this standing).
One last comment : valets are HORRIBLE. They welcomed me uber-nicely when I gave them my nice convertible to park, but have been extremely rude to my friend who came in a less-shiny and pretentious car... that is not what valet should be about... you guys drive cars for god's sake ! You cannot afford to give "the look" at a customer because his car is less expensive than a jag! So, if you have dinner at Katsuya, don't hesitate to be rude with the valets :)
But, aside from that, a good experience.
