Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

Sushi to compare all others to... 3/21/2005

I compare all sushi to the sushi at Katsu-ya. If you like inventive, fresh, delicious sushi, this is the place for you. it's a hole-in-the-wall place, but the ambiance is not why you go here. I recommend: crispy sesame tuna, spicy tuna on crispy rice, the honey handrolls, tuna sashimi with japanese salsa, and many more. Pros: best sushi Cons: park on street, always busy more

disappointing is an understatement 3/15/2005

if u're a true sushi conisseuer, this place is NOT worth it. sushi is mediocre. the inventive rolls and appetizers were ALL disappointing. i dunno how even Zagat's gave this place a 27rating but it's more like a 20. is it just me or are all LA restaurants w/ high ratings unimpressive?? guess i can't blame em if they've never had real food b4 to compare it to. this place is just average but at least the cost is affordable. Pros: affordable Cons: medicocre sushi, overrated more

Yummy! 12/1/2004

This is the #1 sushi restaurant in LA. The spicy tuna hand rolls are unreal, other favorites include tuna with crispy onions, spicy tuna on crispy rice with jalapeno, spinach salad with tuna and the chocolate cake...but the wait is insane. Make a reservation! Even with a reservation you will wait. But the food is fresh and the best tasting Japanese I've ever had. The service is bad though. Since they are so busy everyday, they can afford to be rude to everyone. Pros: Food Cons: , Service more

Sushi Row Gem 7/18/2004

If you only had one meal to eat in L.A. and you wanted to eat Japanese, you could not go wrong with Katsu-ya. The lobster dynamite, Kobe beef and seared albacore with Japanese salsa are can't misses. Don't be fooled into thinking you must order from the rather expensive specials menu. You can order strictly sushi or sashimi if you wish but they won't tell you this. The fish is top notch and very reasonably priced for L.A. Pros: great specials, sushi more

Sushi and More 12/21/2003

Some of the best sushi that I've ever had! Good for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. All or friends love it there. If you go, you must try and Seared Tuna Steak with Japanese Salsa. Although, be aware of the LONG wait. Make reservations and be prepared to wait your turn patiently. It's worth it. Pros: Great Food, Reasonable Pricing Cons: Parking, Crowded more

EXCELLENT FOOD!!! 12/9/2003

Cramped and crowded-Parking sucks-But make it a point to find a seat at Katsu-ya where the food will never disappoint. Fun and different only begin to describe the ""Specials"" and fresh and attractive are the keywords for all of the items available. Prices are in line with most sushi houses, but the presentation pushes Katsu-ya over the edge. Don't miss it! Pros: OUTSTANDING FOOD!, Friendly Staff Cons: Parking, Crowded more

Simply the best!!! 7/25/2003

Sushi Katsu-ya is by far--by far--the best sushi restaurant I have been to. Once you eat here, it becomes the standard by which you compare all others. Don't get fooled by the decor and the strip mall location. It is the food that is terrific. Must try the Baked Crab Hand Roll and the Seared Tuna with Japanese Salsa. It is absolutely addicting. I have taken several friends there, and they are now all hooked. Pros: Terrific Food, Always Fresh, Innovative Cons: Very Busy, Need Reservations, Croweded more

Tadpole 6/12/2003

Fresh food, nice people. Make reservations 2 days ahead for prime time. Otherwise have some tea or a beer (nice that they offer while you wait) and wait usually is about 15 to 20 min for 2 people. 2 people it is fun to sit at the bar. Koi has coppied a lot of Katsu-ya menu and increased the price. Pros: Fresh, menu changes, Nice staff Cons: atmosphere is just ok more

best sushi in LA 5/10/2003

katsu-ya has to be the best sushi restaurant in los angeles. apart from being a ""hole-in-the-wall,"" everyone is who is anyone dines here. the sushi and sashimi is extremely fresh and the specials and sushi rolls are mouth watering. try the albacore sushi - it melts in your mouth, and if youre a fan of freshwater eel, try the crunchy roll - which has tempura flakes on top of a california freshwater eel roll. definately worth the wait! Pros: fresh fish, unique sushi rolls Cons: always busy, long wait more

Sushi-lovers rejoice! 3/20/2003

My wife and I have been eating sushi for years now. We've tried countless other sushi restaurants, but always come back to Katsu-ya. Why? It's simply the best; the freshest; and some of the most inventive specials you'll find. A real plus is it's 1/2 mile from our house! Unfortunately it's small, and the waits can be crushing. Beware on the weekends of the ""Russian Mafia""-types take over with their large parties! Pros: Great sushi!, Wonderful specials, Mr. Katsu!!! Cons: Bad parking, Crowded, Curt hostess (Mrs.) more

THE best in the Valley 9/25/2002

Even if you have your favorite tried-and-true rolls or sushi, you must try at least one of the specials here. They come up with combinations that you would never think of...and they are all amazing. The wait is always long, but well worth it. Try making a reservation, but usually you wait just as long with or without one. Non-sushi items are good, too; chicken teriyaki and all the tempuras are delicious. It's also a celeb-sighting haven: one recent night yielded Christina Applegate, Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow! more
