What more can you ask for? Great staff + relaxing environment + great color and cuts = amazing salon!!! The mimosas and the freshly baked goods on Saturdays don't hurt either...

Worst

Chris gives a decent haircut & is fun to chat with. But I was left waiting - twice! because he overslept and missed my morning appt. entirely. Another woman trimmed my hair, and t...

Best Ever!!! 3/14/2007

I read the reviews on this site about Starr House, some not great but most of them really great and thought I would take the chance that City Search members knew best. I was right this place was friendly, upscale and just under the radar of being crazy busy. I went on a Wednesday afternoon and my colorist and cutter were booked. I loved the hilites and hair cut I got. I will definitely be talking all my crazy friends who waste half the day and a lot of money going to the west side to try this place that's close to home. more

OVERHYPED AND OVERPRICED 3/4/2007

After much debate I decided to shell out the money for this place. I expected a fabulous haircut. I had Chris who was nice and helpful but the entire process felt rushed, he didn't really listen to my input or look at the pictures I brought. The entire hair cut took around 15 minutes. When he finished, I was shocked, there was not that much change. Definitely not worth the $75 dollars. I came back a few weeks later to get my bangs trimmed. That took about 2 minutes and they came out too choppy. A few days later, I had my friend who works for Toni and Guy cut my hair and she asked if I cut my bangs myself because it did not look professional. Will not be coming back to Starr house again, it was a huge disappointment. Pros: Cool looking neighborhood Cons: Price and Cut more

HARMFULLY CARELESS 2/26/2007

I'd like to second a previous observation that a large percentage of these reviews sound as if they had been written by a Starr House employee. My skepticism is only reinforced by my own bad experience at Starr House, which might not have seemed as negative had I not driven what turned out to be over an hour to the place on the basis of the many suspiciously well-worded positive reviews on this site. I happened to get lost on my way there and arrive late, so to be fair I won't go into the specific snootiness with which I was greeted in case I deserved that for being late. However, after my haircut, Albert repeatedly burned my neck with the hairdryer while flat-brushing my hair so vehemently that it felt like it was being yanked out by the roots, bringing tears to my eyes, and he did not cease burning me even after I jerked away suddenly a couple of times and he had to say, ""Oh, sorry, did I burn you?"" (I assured him that he had). If you do go to this salon that has to drum up business by writing its own reviews, make sure and don't be late or you will be physically injured as a consequence!!! more

Must mention! 1/22/2007

I was just browsing throught the site here to let my friend know where to look and was horrified to read a review about Andrea. As a very very loyal client of Starr House I would like to mention that Andrea does the most beautiful and natural hair I have ever seen, no streaky or funky from her! She even referrs clients to other stylists if that is what they want as it is not her style nor is it a reflection of her work. And the nearly 3 years since I have been going to her she has never been running late unless her client before me was late which pushed me back. She sees so may people a day as she is so popular that if any are late( and out here that happens!) It upsets her entire morning. as for her hair, it used to be blonde, now it is red, nothing weird about that right? What do you expect, she is a colorist!!!!! Believe me, she is fantastic, there is nothing she doesn't know about color, how to do, fix, change........ go on try her, you won't be disappointed!!!! Pros: fab fab! Cons: busy street at the weekend more

Really loved it.... 1/22/2007

I loved this place. I read the reviews even a few bad ones and thought I would try it. I really loved it. I saw Andrea and Kimberly for color and cut. Andrea did a great Highlight on me- really natural and Kimberly gave me a great haircut. They are doing Style classes for the clients now and I signed up for one. I think this place really has it together and will be letting everyone know about it... thanks city search for having such a great site... more

Best Salon in Pasadena Area 12/5/2006

I have tried salons everywhere....West side, East Side, Valley and this salon far out weighs them all. I found it professional, clean, nice and slightly trendy. I called and booked with Andrea for hilites and Kimberly for haircut. Both women talked to me about what I wanted and really listened. That in and of itself was new treatment for a salon. Then they both made nice small talk...but in the end (where it really counts) delivered what I wanted. I don't remember being this pleased with my hair in a long long time. This place is worth the hype and worth the drive (if not close to you). Amazing.... Pros: Great place Cons: A little bit of a drive for me- but worth it more

master with the cleaver! 11/20/2006

I have been to Chris a few times now and my entire office are about to book with him too. I found him here and on another site. I moved here from NYC and had a great guy there too but they are completely different both in personality and style, but guess what, my hair is drastically different now than before and I love it and Chris. I totally trust him with my locks and so do my friends. I guess you can't be all things to all people all of the time tho. Keep up the great work Chris, we are all booking ahead, you are so hard to get in with. Even my 72 year old mother loves what you do with her hair. Oh and Andrea is fab with the color too! Pros: free parking and running on time! more

CAREFUL IF YOU DON""T WANT CHRIS TO BUTCHER YOUR HAIR!!! 11/18/2006

Based on the excellent reviews on different websites I made an appointment with Chris and Andrea. I just moved here from the East Coast and my hair was long overdue for a cut and highlight. Pros: easy parking Cons: STYLIST DID NOT LISTEN TO WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Fabulous place where you truely get what you pay for! 11/11/2006

I went to Starr house with some hesitance since none of my friends or co-workers had heard of the place, it was a bit pricy, and I only had citysearch's reviews to go off of. But Chris, my stylist, quickly knocked those thoughts out of my head. Truely a professional, he questioned what my habits were, amount of time I had dedicated to my hair, etc. Not only did he do an increadible job cutting and styling my hair, he actually broke it down for me as to how to achieve the same look at home. None of the complicated 16 step instructions (I'm a wash and go type of person). The compliments I recieved about my new look were too numerous to count and definately worth the cost ($75)! Pros: Free parking, knowledgable staff Cons: price - but worth it! more

three cheers! 10/18/2006

I have been going to Andrea for a very long time for my color, we met in Washington DC after I read a review about her as best colorist in the dc area written by the Washintonian, wow what a big deal I thought. I had to wait about 4 weeks to see her and it was well worth it. Since then I moved out to the LA area and saw her when I went back east to visit my family. You can imagine how delighted I was when she said she was moving out here too! I travel from the beach just to have her do my color. And I have watched her steadily grow here too as word has got out. Andrea came from San Fransisco then moved to DC after NYC. She has been an international educator for Wella, Clairol, Schwartzcopf..... that means she has taught other colorists, there is nothing she does not know, it is fasinating! ( I know everything about here, well it has been a long time!) Her DC clients included senators, lawyers, they couldn't get enought of her. And now LA is getting word of it too, she has had reviews alongside Fredrich Fakkai in Angelino, best color/cut recently in Elle and many local magazines. And what's even better, she costs me less here than she did on the east coast. She is $75 for color and $130-$160 for hilights, that's it, no more, and that includes shampoo and blowdry by her amazing assistants. And if you take in a pic she will tell you flat out, yes I can or no I can not, and this is why. It's not that she cannot do it its that she does not think it is in your best interest to (lets say you want really blonde as I have) use bleach as it will ruin your hair. And when she says you will just need a retouch next time and not hilights she means in a month or so, not 3 when there is half a head of roots! (been there too!) Go see her, tell her Amy sent you!!!!! Pros: lovely area and free parking! more

Hope for hair in Pasadena again!!! 10/17/2006

First let me say that not every salon can please all of the people all of the time, but Starr House pleased me and I am very picky. I have been to most salon in the Pasadena area including several recommended on this site and a few on the west side too. I have found that they are not bad but not great either. I gave it one more go at this site and found starr house. I called and was pretty much interviewed by Karen ( a service I loved as she explained she wanted to match me to the right people) she recommended Andrea and Kimberly. I went to the salon and filled out a consultation form and had a very long talk with Andrea about my color. How often I wanted to come in, how much I wanted to spend, how I kept it up (product) and what I had done in the past. I was really amazed at how long she spent with me. Kimberly talked to me for a long time too. I had my services and was just thrilled with the result. I think the hilights are the most natural I have ever had and the cut is cute and easy to take care of. The referral program (send in 3 friends and get a free service) topped off my great time. Thanks Starr House for giving me hope in the Pasadena area again. more

Different colors of streaks ACROSS hair Inconsistent Overpriced and Overrated 10/14/2006

The 1st time there my hilights were immaculate ($180 +25 tip). The 2nd time I got only the base color, inconsistent with an obvious darker color on top which was so contrasting to the earlier all over blonde below ($140 +20 tip). I was told the next time my full hilites would be better. So on my 3rd time I expected just that! For $180 + 15 tip, I still had streaks acrross from the old coloring before PLUS the new color on my left side had so many variations of brown (suppossed to be blonde, hello?) mixed with some blonde. Also this time like the 2nd visit no one bothered to check my developing b4 they rinsed and (barely) dried my hair.It was so dissapointing the next day when I noticed all this inconsistent colors after I shampooed.I didn't want to spend another $180 again when it should've been just as good as the very 1st time! Shame on me if I go back. There isn't any excuse for spending this amount of money to have such bad results. They are very nice, but I would rather have bad attitudes and the right color.I have been nothing but nice and even when I called to say how unhappy I was Andrea gave me some unbelievable reason that she was just looking out for the health of my hair. (Yeah, I alreday skipped a bleach hilite for 3 months prior! Hello!)That was so dissapointing. I thought I had found my dream salon, but once again, I'm out looking for a place that will be consistent to a loyal (and generous) client like me...I don't recommend this place, sorry folks. Live and learn, don't take my word for it..walk around for 3 months in embbarrassment like I did, first! Oh and don't be 5-10 minutes early, they will make a comment. Pros: Parking Cons: Inconsistent Awful hilites, Rushed hair drying, they don't own up to their mistakes. more

Andrea and Chris rock ""the House""!!!! 10/12/2006

First off let me say that I am VERY picky about my hair and always hesitant to try new places. After reading all the rave reviews for Starr House, I had to try them and was thrilled with the experience I had (and continue to have). Each time I leave feeling fantastic. Andrea colors my hair so it looks so soft and natural, not streaky or brassy AT ALL. If you are someone who colors their hair and wants it to LOOK colored this might not be the place for you. Chris's cuts are fantastic and hold up for months. I've gotten more compliments than I ever have. They run on time, are super friendly and don't take forever to do a great job. In a nutshell if you want the westside color/cut without the attitude and crazy prices, try Starr House. Pros: quality of work, excellent service more

TV hot shot 10/12/2006

Well, can I just say that I called Starr House for a haircut and I was asked a few determining questions (like a mini interview on the phone) to best determine my stylist and I was given a choice of a male and a female best suited for my type and style of hair. Can you imagine my surpise when the young lady that came up to greet me when I had filled out my consultation form was Kimberly from the Jonathon's hair salon show on Bravo. I LOVED that show and she was amazing on it. She is as equally amazing at Starr House, I absolutely love my haircut, it is so Chic! I am so excited that Kimberly is here in San Marino/Pasadena area as the journey and price put me off the Bev Hills area. Now I am looking forward to going back for my color with Andrea. Great job you guys! Thank You Kimberly! Pros: Celeb fun gossip! Cons: my hair doesn'tgrow fast enough! more

chris rocks! 10/11/2006

all i can say is..................FANTASTIC! Chris' cutting was so precise and exactly what ive been trying to explain to the 500 other cutters ive been to! he got it! Chris totally got it! my hair is now FUN EDGY AND SOPHISTOCATED! and hes hilarious and has more style and fashion sense than anyone ive let touch my hair on the west side! thanks for bringing beverly hills to san marino im saving money and getting much more than i ever thought! Pros: fun and inviting Cons: wanting to spend the day there! more

Amazing color and great cut 10/9/2006

I went to Starr House this past weekend after reading the reviews here and had Chris and Andrea do my cut and hilites. I have to say I am amazed at the hilights most likely the best of my life and the cut is cute. Chris took a lot of time with me to show me how to style it and Andrea talk to me about upkeep and products to keep my hilights looking great. Thanks Starr House for making me look great. more

Kimberly ROCKS!!!!! 9/19/2006

I found Starr House on this site read the reviews and was going to make an appointment with Andrea and Chris. I couldn't get in with them at a time that worked for me and was told that Andrea can take 3 times as many clients as Chris and they have hired a new master cutter. I made an appointment with Andrea and Kimberly and found the 2 nicest and most knowable women that do amazing color and cuts I have ever found. Bonus is Kimberly was on Johanthan's hair show on Bravo so I got lots of celb. gossip and great star tips to style my own hair. These chicks really rock. Try Starr House you'll love it. more
