This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Fit for God 8/30/2003

Hands down best steak on this planet. I have been to every steak place in NY, LA, Chicago, Miami, Vegas, Dallas and they all try but simply cannot compete. Best bacon, lambchops, porterhouse, side dishes, bartenders, maitre d's and waiters. The uneducated people saying anything bad about Peter Luger either a) couldnt get a reservation b) generally enjoy the meat on the buffet at Ponderosa or c) order their meat well done. I have personally brought over 30 ""Luger Virgins"" here and each time it is hands down the best they have ever had. Those complaining about prices obviously dont eat at Palm, Sparks, Mortons, Strip House, Del Frisco's which are all more expensive across the board. Long live the King of Beef. Best in NYC? Spare me... 8/23/2003

Ive had better steak at Bonanza. Good thing we had $200 of wine to ease the pain. I understand steak places can be hit or miss but all four of us at the table agreed that this place is surviving on its prior reputations. Service was good, the waiter was a little flip, but we can deal with that. The wine selection was good, but a little on the pricier side. I've been to 5 out of the 10 listed here and several others not listed (Palm Westside; Gallagers; Del Friscos to name a few). There is NO way the caliber of Steak at Peter Lugers is that good. The steak tasted like a burnt grill; the steak sauce was WAY to sweet; the desert was OK; the wine selection was terrible. WHO is voting this place as #1??? Fughedaboutit.... Definition of STEAKHOUSE 7/23/2003

Those that talk of ""Grey, tough steak"" are obviosly ordering the steak too well to begin with. A real red meat lover orders it so; BLOOD RED. If you order correctly and eat like a human, it's still red, perfect, tender and juicy prime porterhouse. It is always hot, always served by a man who has served steak his whole life, and always the best steak you could ever eat. If you think it's overpriced, try the filets at Palm or Sparks, which are not quite as tender as the porterhouse at lugers, and cost twice as much. great steak 7/7/2003

Best steak I've had. It's actually better to have the rare than the medium rare. The steak is aged very well and full of flavor that the steak sauce is not even needed. They don't try to saturate their steak with butter like others. It's just a great steak. Very low key kind of place that serves good food. I was there for the steak not the decor. If you want decor, go to other trendy places and over pay for bad food. Pros: great steak more

New York has better. 6/30/2003

If it was not for the flowing beer that evening the dinner would have received an overall of 1. The HIGH ($285 for 4 people) price of Going to one of these ""Heard it's great"" hole in the walls. The steak was tough and dry by the time I reached the middle. When I looked for a correction on the meal I was looked at as Elliot Ness in the middle of Al Capone's bedroom. Originaly from New York I was looking at surprising my guests with a legendary steak, in a legendary city..........boy was I wrong......about the steak that is. I absolutely agree about the 'lava hot' platters making the meat after the first slice a very expensive disappointment. The best single piece of meat I ever had was at the old Manny Wolf's---so good, when you think about it, that I can i.d. it as the best single steak in my life. Much like the single best wine...but how tough is it to say that about meat? Morton's was a 9-10 compared to Lugar's...and Sparks was almost that good. Over rated steak 6/25/2003

This is by far the most overrated restaurant in the city. Is the meat good? Yeah, but I have had better and it is certainly not worth the miserably crowded, ugly little room, crappy sides and surly service. This city has a lot of good steakhouses, and it is a mystery to me why everyone swears by this one. Its great to be anonymous and non-politically correct. Hands down, the BEST STEAK anywhere, Peter Luger borders on a carnivorous religion. Having been to most of the steakhouses in and around NYC (and elsewhere), I feel confident in saying that Peter Luger is the best of the bunch. All of the distractions that you find at other steakhouses - numerous cuts, large menus, fancy decor - are set aside in order to focus on the ultimate steak dinner. Go with somone who's been there before so you don't have to ask for a menu (which is Luger blasphemy). And if you can't tell the difference between this and an Arthur's steak, then I am truly sorry for you - I suggest a taste bud transplant or eating all future meals at the nearest McDonald's, because there is no comparison. Simply the best 6/10/2003

If you are a steak-lover, you will be in a gluttonous heaven. The numbness in your lower legs from sitting on old wood chairs is more than compensated by the wonderful food. Get the bacon (best ever, hands down) and shrimp cocktail to start and steak for how many ever to finish. Pros: Everything Cons: Wait more

A definite experience 6/8/2003

I'd heard a lot about this place, but wasn't totally prepared for the whole experience. The side dishes are pretty good, but the steak is what you come here for. And - the waiter was friendly! -- I was expecting the waiter to ignore us and be rude, but he had a quick smile and was accomodating. Definitely go with someone who's been before ... and it helps to have a P.L. credit card. Pros: Great steak more

Don't plan on walking up, you'll need a reservation. And bring plenty of cash as they don't take credit cards. To sum it up, the steak is indeed the best out there, but the servers and especially the hosts are big time jerks. Just because you have the best steak in the world and everyone wants to eat it still doesn't give you a right to be jerks about it. Who the hell do these people think they are? Rude and disappointing 5/15/2003

When we made our reservation we were called three times to confirm, but they never mentioned they don't accept credit cards. The waiter was rude, and the steak was over-aged and tasted awful. I won't go back. Cons: No credit cards, terrible neighborhood, rude waiter more

Not Impressed 5/15/2003

Its not that I didn't like the steak but I didn't love it. I go to restaurants for the ambience and service as well as the food. Frankly Peter Lugar's needs a facelift. Its decor isn't any better then say TGI Friday's or Outback. The plates and silverware looked like they were perchased when PL's first opened. It seems like its living off of its reputation from yester year - I was disappointed. The best thing about Peter Lugar's is the steak sauce and as luck would have it you can buy that at your local grocery store. Pros: Steak Sauce Cons: Expensive, Bad decor, Sub par service more

Four for dinner, the special was porterhouse for four, we ordered medium rare, what arrived was two t-bones blackened from flames. Not an appealing meal, I do better at home! Cons: blackened steak, not porterhouse, no flavor more

Not worth the $$ 5/15/2003

I've even had much better for much less. You are better off saving your money and going to Arthur's. The one good thing I can say is that they were understanding when our party was a 1/2 hour late for our reservations due to traffic. Traffic, yet another reason not to go.
