Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

Nobody does it better! 3/11/2004

Luger's may not be the fanciest of places and the waiters are true New Yorkers through and through but a better steak can not be found period. You will not be disappointed. Don't forget the unlimited sides of creamed spinach and the potatoes. Oh and bring your cash. No plastic here. Unless you have their own ""Peter Luger"" card. Applications are available on their website. Make your reservation months in advance too. Pros: Steak, Steak, Steak Cons: , Finicky Service more

Not worth it 3/7/2004

With the ever increasing number of top notch steak houses in the NYC area, why settle for a typical 1.5h wait after making reservations at least 1 month in advance. Not to mention poor service, poor ambience , mediocre drinks & cramped bar space while you wait. If your dropping that kind of cash drop it elsewhere. Pros: Great Steak Cons: , Rude Staff, poor ambiance more

Peter Luger Steak House 3/7/2004

Peter Luger Steak House may have good food, but certainly far from being number one in NYC. Pros: average food, trendy, reputation Cons: , loud, crowded more

All the buzz proved to be a big let down 3/7/2004

I think Lugers is entirely over rated. The steaks are just not that good. The Midtown steak houses including Sparks and Ruth Chris' far out taste Lugers. Although the sides at Lugers are delicious (the bacon is out of this world) the steak is entirely priced way too high. I would not recommend wasting your money here. Pros: side dish, steak sauce Cons: , steak is not tasty, over rated more

Hyped... but great steak! 2/19/2004

Everyone knows that this plays carries tremendous hype. This place almost lives up to it. The appetizers and side dishes are run of the mill. But the steak did not dissapoint! The porterhouse gets better and better with every bite. Plus the house steak sauce is awesome. If you are a premium steak eater... this place is a must. Also, who says that this place has bad service. My party were treated with world class table service. Plus they arrange car service to take you back home. Pros: Steak, Sauce, Great Service Cons: , Expensive more

World Class Steak 2/18/2004

The porterhouse is as good a steak you are going to find in NYC or the surrounding area. It may even be one of the tops in the nation. The steak was good from the get go and stayed good to the last bite. Service has a reputation for being gruff, but Steve was helpful, funny and generous. The lighting is what it is, and if you expect a nice frilly steakhouse, you've come to the wrong place. Luger's is what it is, and what it is is a great steakhouse. Get the bacon, the porterhouse, the hashbrowns and spinach. Then go home happy. TIP- keep the liquor consumption down and you can have dinner for a steal of a deal. Pros: Porterhouse, Service, Price more

porterhouse...YUM!!! 1/30/2004

i was not a big steak fan until i tried the porterhouse at PL. now i am a convert and am eagerly anticipating my next reservation there in a month. simply put the porterhouse is to die for... its got the texture of butter, comes already sliced, and practically melts in your mouth. i relished every bite and could have eaten more than my half of a porterhouse for 2. creamed spinach, german potatoes and tomato/onion slices are also excellent. fast before coming here and skip the onion rolls to enjoy the steak to the maximum... its da bomb!! Pros: phenomenal steak, prompt service Cons: , hard to get reserv more

add to your luger visit 1/2/2004

we suggest for first time peter luger visitors...in the evening when it's dark...to have dessert and coffee at the River Cafe...a short driving distance away. the view at night from brooklyn of lower manhattan and it's buildings and bridges is truly incredible & unforgetable. Pros: best steak anywhere, no problem parking Cons: not the best area, get good directions, crowded more

Food is great 12/19/2003

The food is great. Mouth watering steaks. WOW!!!! $150 for diner for two!!!!!!! Just try it once in your life. Pros: Classy Cons: EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!, EXPENSIVE!!!, EXPENSIVE!!! more

big steak no seasoning 12/18/2003

For those of us who like some flavor on our meat, this is not the place for us. The steak is a high quality steak and is quite large, however there is no flavor in it except ""meat"". One thing I will say is that you will not have indegestion, even after eating more than 2 lbs of steak. Pros: Good quality steak, Exciting place, fast service Cons: crowded, no seasoning, cold in seating area more

Mystifying Dissenters 12/10/2003

Peter Luger is the finest steakhouse in the world. Ordering a burger at that fine establishment is among the most inane actions that can be taken in this city. And complaining about it is lunacy. With clearly very little knowledge or appreciation for fine foods, Laureljanssen deserved a horrible experience. Pros: steak, service, sides more

PL Sucks 11/27/2003

How disappointing to make my pilgrimage from the City to Brooklyn, order such an average burger that comes with onions even when order specifically WITHOUT, and is served by the rudest, most incompetent moron I've yet experienced in my years of rude NYC service. For $100 lunch, I should have stayed in Manhattan and gone to Smith & Wolensky, where the crotchety waiters are nice to me and my burger doesn't come with a side of $6.00 lettuce/tomato -- a bit excessive, don't you think????? Pros: good beef, good onion rolls Cons: nasty waiters, miniscule drinks, incorrect order more

Manna on Heaven for Steak Lovers 11/21/2003

Peter Luger's is a wonderfully unique experience and has the best porterhouse in NYC, period. While the waits frequently run to over an hour, even with a reservation, the food is definitely worth it. Fit in and order off menu - my faves are the porterhouse, the sinfully thick and juicy bacon, and the best pecan pie I've ever had. Tomatoes and onions are thick and popular, the cheesecakes wonderful. The service is distinctly old school New York and charming. Ambience is a bit coarse - don't pop the question here - and location suck but hey, you know why you're here - it's the food, schmuck! Pros: Food, Service, Food Again! Cons: Location, Wait Time more

There's Luger's, then the rest 11/14/2003

Rating food is obviously a subjective exercise. However, when it comes to Luger's steak there is no question - it is simply the best steak available anywhere, bar none. They have over a century of experience hand-selecting the best meat in the US, and it shows time and time again. For atmosphere, fancy napkins, a trophy wine list, a fish special - go to other places. If you want the best steak of your life, go to Lugers. -Quick tip: try the $8 burger, made from the trimmings of the aged porthouse. Excellent! Pros: Best steak, period., Unbelievable bacon., Cheap burgers. Cons: Pricey more

worth only 1 trip 10/28/2003

peter lugers is a place everyone should at least try once. while our steaks, medium-rare, was good, it's not as good as everyone rated it. the no fuss waiters and decor were actually a nice break from the pretentious restaurants in the city, but overall it was just a decent dining experience. definatley does not live up to the hype. Pros: casual setting , no fuss service Cons: neighborhood too far more

best steak in NYC 10/14/2003

rarely does a place live up to its reputation...in the case of Peter Luger, it exceeeded its reputation...my party of 10 had a terrific meal...steak was delicious, service was excellent...can not wait to go back again and again more

The best, bar none 10/9/2003

I've been to tons of steakhouses. The others don't even compare. Anyone who disagrees is out of their mind. You don't go for ambience... you don't go for cushy service... you go for Red Meat. No fooling around at Luger's. They serve up the best steak anywhere. Anyone who has taste that disagrees should be getting their meat at McDonald's. 'NUFF SAID. Pros: Steak, Steak, Steak Cons: nothing more

the best of the best 9/23/2003

Best steak in the country barring none. worth a trip to NYC from LA. Have been going there for 35 years. meal is always consistent. Never varies. more

Great but not the best 9/7/2003

I was definitely impressed after finally eating here. Bacon is a must. The steak is very good, I would rate it among the best I've had, but in my opinion Keen's porterhouse is a bit better. Pros: Good Food Cons: Crowded, Getting There more

My heart hurts 9/3/2003

I won't say Peter Luger is the best steak I've ever had, but it is certainly up there. How anyone can give the food anything less than an 8 (unless they don't like steak with pink on the inside) completely boggles my mind. The party of 8 I dined with were all agog at how good the seak was. The servers were all helpful and good-natured, although we ate upstairs and had a lot of the younger staff, so that might have been it. Decor is old, but the bathrooms are clean and updated. If you're in NYC, you do have to take a trip out to W'burg once to try it. I've had a lot of steak in this city, and Luger is one you have to try. Pros: Steak, Steak, Did I mention Steak Cons: A bit overhyped more
