DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS!! 1/3/2008

First of all, please know that I am in now way associated with this restaurant. I merely stopped by to direct a friend to this restaurant, and I was SHOCKED to see how many 1-star ratings I saw......how can someone possibly give this place any less than 4 stars, and usually 5 stars!!.......upon further inspection I realized that all of the low rating posters have only rated one place on all of Citysearch........can you say disgruntled worker? One of the low rated reviews is OBVIOUSLY THE FORMER MANAGER, and the rest are probably him as well..................take all negative posts with a grain of salt, and hopefully Citysearch will do better to check the validity of email addresses for thier reviewers, as the one I just used is obviously fake!!!................That being said, I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT AND I'M THRILLED TO RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY TO FRIENDS!! Pros: WONDERFUL RESTAURANT Cons: BITTER EX-EMPLOYEES WHO POST BOGUS NEGATIVE REVIEWS more

Too much Hype 1/2/2008

Well, unfortunately, this is one place not to go to. The place lacks imagination. The owners obviously took pieces of better restaurants and tried to create a unique atmosphere, but failed. After my date and I looked at the menu, we realized we had seen some of these receipes in a cookbook I had a home. We ordered the shortribs to make sure, and what do you know...it came with prunes. I'll be honest and it tasted fine, but where was the creativity? We had heard great things about this place, but after going there and eating, we won't be back. Why waste your money on something boring. The staff is unorganized, and the bartender very lacking. His cocktails were flat. PLEASE....why can't something ever open in Beaverton that is worthwhile...why is it always someone elses knockoff. Try again Decari's. This time use some imagination more

Great Food, Westside Location! 12/28/2007

We went here on the recommendation of a friend of a friend, and were pleasantly surprised. Not many people in the place (and it's a HUGE space!) on a rainy Thursday night, but hopefully that will change because it would be nice for a place like this to stay in business on the West side. We had the polenta fries that past reviews raved about and they were probably the most disappointing part of the meal. The ""fries"" were good but the gorgonzola butter served with them wasn't great; it had separated so that the actual butter was on top and the cheese was kind of gunky and not easy to dip (as in it didn't adhere to the polenta very well). Our salads were much better. They serve a great Casear. And the main courses were very good: Diver Scallops served over lentils and a Seafood Risotto, both the specials of the night. The scallops were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The risotto was good, too, but the seafood was slightly undercooked. It didn't bother me, but it might not be to everyone's tastes (especially people who tend to like everything VERY well done, even their seafood!). Our server was very nice but maybe a bit overeager and tended to repeat the same phrase over and over, but I'll take that over a pretentious/rude server any day! Also, they were out of the wine I ordered by the glass, but our server recommended another glass that I liked so much I plan on going out to buy a bottle or two on my own. We will definitely go back. Pros: Good Food, West Side Location, Nice Ambiance more

A must...Decarli kicks A...best new comer to the metro restaurant scene 12/18/2007

The whole restaurant has an open feeling to it....great lighting, exposed brick and classic fixtures provided a nice atmosphere that is not trying to hard to be something chic or trendy...at Decarli it is all about the food ...and to say the food was good would be an understatement. I went for the whole deal....caesar salad, soup, entree and several shared desserts. The key for me with a caesar is the dressing, and Decarli nailed it, just a bit tart with fresh, cool romaine lettuce. Enough to split with a friend. I trailed this with the tomato soup, which was spicy and excellent. In the brief time that Decarli has been open, the short ribs have been getting some high marks from friends who recommended the place....so for the entree I had to go for it. They came with prunes, which I was a bit leery of when I first ordered, but these roasted gems mash up to make a kind of paste, which when matched with the tender ribs and spatzel made the whole thing simply outstanding. For dessert we had chocolate / bourbon gelato that was out of this world, as was the chocolate / pear tart. I was floored at how good the food was. As mentioned in other reviews, our server was very, very attentive...but only because he cared a great deal. Definitely better than an inattentive waiter....and once this place gets rolling, (I get the feeling it is bound to) the wait staff will need all the attention they can muster...so its probably a good sigh they try so hard now. If you are planning on going out for a big dinner over the holidays with a group of friends or with family, and you're looking for great food and a new dining experience, this is an excellent option, as it has not been open long and word has not gotten out. I highly recommend Decarli.....the next time we go out I know I'm going back! more

You gotta try It! 12/11/2007

My wife and I were visiting Portland last weekend and met at DeCarli for dinner with another couple who had driven up from Salem. They parked in front, and we found ample street parking around the corner on the right from the restaurant, plus we noticed a municipal parking lot just beyond. Good thing to know, because we went early and the place was starting to fill by the time we were through. There was the warm, friendly buzz of people visiting and enjoying dinner, a good place to be. We started with the yummy polenta fries appetizer, then found the beet salad and Caesar salad to be the best we've had in a long, long time. Made with fresh ingredients, too, I must add. Owner/Chef Paul DeCarli, who visited our table, mentioned all produce and meats are purchased locally first whenever possible. We had four different entrees and were able to sample each other's and found them all to be fantastic--tuna, porchetta, shortribs, and ravioli. We were quite full by that point, but managed to sample two delicious desserts by sharing the bread pudding with gelato and the ""lavender"" dessert. Excellent, it was all excellent! Our waiter was friendly and took good care of us, as did other staffmembers, without being obtrusive. During the dinner, owner/manager Jana DeCarli also stopped by to chat, which lent to the relaxed, genial, ""family"" feeling we all left with. We'll be back, for certain, next time we are in the area and won't miss driving to the downtown section of Portland when there is a restaurant of this caliber in Beaverton. And, we plan to get there early in the evening because this best-kept secret won't be for long! Pros: excellent food, excellent service, excellent atmosphere more

Decarli is FANTASTIC!! 12/10/2007

Great food, great wine list, great wait staff, great desserts...all on top of a beautiful space. Treat yourself to a real dinner in Beaverton, before the crowds take over here.......it's only a matter of time before this gem is discovered, and it becomes reservations only. Pros: Read the review!! Cons: It will sson be crowded. more

Finally....Beaverton has ARRIVED!! 12/9/2007

For years I have longed for a business in the historic district of Beaverton to come in and turn around the neighborhood. I think Decarlis is going to do just that . My husband and I are always driving miles from our home in the West Slope to find great food....we usually end around NW 23rd or in the Pearl. We've done Clarklewis, Bluehour, Andina, Le Pigeon, Filbert's, Hoyt 23, you name it, we've been there.....And now we have a new favorite...Decarlis in Historic Beaverton. The menu is simple and rustic, but diverse and complex at the same time. The ambience can't be beat. The exposed brick walls and hanging incandescent bulbs transform the space to urban chic.....ask owner Jana Decarli to give you the history of some of the fixtures when you come in....an amazing testament to restoration and reclaimation.\r \r The service was impeccable.....I've been here twice, and felt well taken care of both times. My water glass never went empty, and my plates were quickly removed as I was finished.....good service doesn't make me nervous...lol!! Owner and Chef Paul even came out to check on us before our meal ended, which is always a nice touch.......\r The first night we came with three young kids. The server was quick to offer two different pastas in kid size portions for a very reasonable price.........\r \r The pork ragu was incredible, as were the beef spare ribs.....but I will come back for the tombo tuna tornados wrapped in prociutto next week! The polenta fries are a great starter, as was the Yukon Gold potato pizza. The cesar salad was large and delicious, and the beet endive salad was a perfect winter starter. I can't wait to try the gnocchi or the ravioli next time.........\r \r Kudos to Paul and Jana Decarli for having faith in a part of Beaverton that has longs since been forgotten, and congratulations on a restaurant that could hold it's own on any street. We look forward to our next visit!! Pros: Great food, great service, great location, great great great!! Cons: Parking could become an issue when others catch on. more

Too bad they didn't get it right 12/8/2007

Tonight my husband and I tried a new place in Beaverton called Decarli. We were at first very excited because of the reviews we had read on citysearch. We walked in and there was no wait, on a Saturday night, it was unusual for us, but that was the start of the problem. The menu was short but nice and the wine list was decent. Right away both my husband and I felt something was off. The bartender was distracted, and so was the server we had. We had been recommended this place by someone who was a friend of one of the servers. The food was fine, nothing special honestly. The service was completely lacking. The staff walked around and interrupted out meal continuously. My husband asked if there was a manager present, because he did enjoy his wine and wanted to know where to get it. We were informed that the manager was no longer working there. Probably had something to do with the overall feel we felt while dinning. The staff didn't have a heart for the place, they were just robots going about their business. After waiting so long for a place on the south side that would be fun to go to, this place lacked heart. We won't return. Strong warning to those who want to try. We also read the good reviews, and found out for ourselves what it was really like. If you want ok food, and a staff that obviously hates working there, this is your place. more

Like attentive service? This is your place. 12/8/2007

I hope this restaurant gets it's act together because we need something like it in Beaverton. I was hopeful on the outside. It looked great from the street. It was great looking on the inside as well. Unfortunately, they are going to need a little more time to work out the quirks. Our table had appetizers, salads and main courses. We were disappointed with the canned ingredients, off-tasting cheeses and a smell to one main course that made it inedible. The food pairings were uninspired and awkward. Our waiter never left us alone. The staff needs to stay in the back of the house as much as possible. We were unable to have enough time between intrusive visits to have a conversation. In fact, most of our conversation ended up being about the waiter and signalling to each other when he was going to walk by again. I will give this restaurant another chance in a month or so. I hope to report better. Pros: Nice ambience; Free bread and water; No waiting Cons: Work out the menu and fine-tune the stafff more

Excellent 12/8/2007

Since moving to Portland a few years ago we have been in search of that go-to Italian restaurant when we need a good meal and I think we have finally found it! Decarli was an unexpected find in downtown Beaverton. The atmosphere was cozy, the staff friendly and most importantly the food was great. We started with butternut squash soup and mixed greens salad. Both were very fresh and very tasty. Our entrees included the parmesan, proscuitto, arugula pizza and the duck ravioli in a brown butter sage sauce. Both entrees were delightful. The menu included a decent wine selection and they have a stocked bar. We can't wait to go back! Pros: good food, atmosphere, more

Finally something for the Forest Heights crowd !!! 12/2/2007

We've been to Decarli twice now since it opened just a couple of weeks ago, and.... WOW !!!!\r Walking through the front door, you realize that this place is the ""real deal.""\r Chef Paul Decarli is a master of his ""mostly Italian cuisine.""\r Taking the old Tara Thai space was a genious move, keeping the exposed brick and adding some killer light fixtures to make this place a true gem in Beaverton.\r The open kitchen off the very cool bar brings a great open feel and flow to the space. \r The menu is awesome, the wine list great, the prices VERY reasonable... and the flavors--- YOWZA -\r So far, we've had the clams and linguine, papardelle with wild boar ragout (delish), the duck ravioli (my fave), and the beef shortribs (also excellent). Not to mention a KILLER caesar salad, and little extras that the sous chef Adam gave us to nibble on while waiting (only a few minutes) for our entrees.\r Paul and Jana know the biz, as they have been in Portland serving up yummy food for over a decade. \r If you live in Forest Heights, this is your new fave.\r If you love good food, get in your car and head to DeCarli !!!!\r Pros: exceptional food in Beaverton Cons: signage needs to be bigger so folks can find it better more

Best meal we've had in Beaverton 12/1/2007

Decarli was highly recommended through a friend of a friend, though I have to admit to having some skepticism at finding a great restaurant in downtown Beaverton. Sure, there are some really good places to eat out in the burbs, but you always go to downtown Portland when you want the best, right? Well, maybe not any longer. Our group tried a variety of menu items this evening: beet & pear salad with endive, polenta fries, tombo tuna with orange, wild boar pappardelle, arugula salad, roasted chicken.\r \r Every single thing we tried was fantastic. The salads were fresh and not over-dressed. The meats were perfectly prepared and seasoned. The portions were more than sufficient without being overwhelming. And best of all, the prices, while not cheap, were perfectly reasonable for the quantity and quality of food.\r \r The decor at Decarli is pretty basic, but the atmosphere is comfortable, open, and conducive to a great evening out with friends or a romantic dinner for two. Probably not a great place for small kids, as the menu items are a bit eclectic for young palates. The staff was very helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive without hovering. We are already planning our next excuse to visit.\r Pros: Wonderful food and service Cons: Location is a bit awkward being on a one-way near a busy intersection more

Keep it up 12/1/2007

Hope they do well. They have a dream and only more business can make it work. Keep it coming. Good Luck Decarli Pros: a dream Cons: no Parking more

Worth the Drive 11/29/2007

Worth the drive from Portland (15 minutes from my home in NoPo), and I can't think of another place in Beaverton like this one; I've been to DeCarli twice already and it's only been a week; my craving for their duck and chestnut ravioli with the browned butter and sage was just too strong to deny !! Tried several different dishes including : \r \r - Proscuitto and arugula pizza- nice , thin crispy crust with a drizzle of olive oil & parmesan- stands up to some of the better pizzas in town including Ken's Artisan. Good ingredients, well made, individula size about $11, I think.\r - Potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms- I've had Bluehour's version of this(the standard by which I 'd judge this dish) -this is the lighter and less intense ""cousin"" - more mushroom , less cheese and truffle.\r - Caesar salad ; a respectable version- although I like mine w/ a bit more garlic and lemon, still, one of the better versions I've had in town; lighter than most and not overdressed.\r -Duck ravioli- one of the best ravioli dishes I've had anywhere , including Italy. This is the perfect fall/winter dish.Chestnut and duck puree, with brown butter, pecorino and sageYUM!! \r -Lavender panna cotta- two of my favorite flavors in one dish, What a way to end the meal.\r \r Cool interior space with the rustic brick wall, simple wood tables and high ceilings; could get loud on a busy night. I liked the urban feel and combination of modern w/ rustic touches. Will be back to try some of the main dishes.Worth watching...\r \r Pros: Good value; can compete w/ the best Italian in town, but less $$ and pretension. Cons: Could get noisy if dining room get;s busy. Some servers still finding their groove, but it's only been open a short time. more

Best new thing to happen to Beaverton 11/29/2007

It's about time Beaverton got it's own great restaurant! The food was awesome (had the shortribs!) the service was great, and I couldn't believe the ambience! I am so, so happy to have somewhere to go without going all the way downtown. This place rocks, and everyone should check it out!\r one very happy customer Pros: great food, great atmosphere Cons: scaffolding makes it look closed more
