Lovely restaurant 8/26/2008

My husband and I eat out alot and love to try new places. We were intrigued by our friends reviews of this Beaverton restaurant - we usually head to Portland for a good meal. DeCarli was a pleasant surprise. Beautiful space, the right atmosphere (although The Smiths music seemed a little out of place - a little toooo hip for this crowd - try hip but more mature- Feist, Meiko, Adele). Waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, cocktails were very nice sized. The food was terrific - we had clams, a Caesar salad, a pizzetta and a pasta. Everything was fresh & delicious. Reasonably priced. We will return for sure! Pros: great food, atmosphere more

I thought the workers arent supposed to review their own place 8/9/2008

Sorry but you are obviously either a worker at Decarli or an owner...you are able to respond straightforwardly, not post a OBVIOUSLY fake review ""misseatsalot"". We can all tell. You seriously spent time calling this place to find out if they take reservations in the bar and then singlehandedly answered EVERY poor review on this forum?? You are CLEARLY biased and I hope that citysearch pulls your review for being FALSE. Restaurant owners are allowed to respond in an HONEST manner....\r I also had a very poor experience at decarli and will definately NOT return. I recommend many places in Beaverton to people looking for a great meal and perhaps decarli will arrive sometime. For now they are simply overpriced, and I would agree, pretentious for the clientele in the area. The staff seemed totally overwhelmed, the menu was tiny and they were out of HALF THE ITEMS!!! I can't ask my server questions if they rush away as soon as I speak! There was no greeting from hostess or server, no sense of welcome, just a sense that they were in a total frenzy and by my asking questions, were totally put out. We left in a hurry and will never return. Pros: It does look nice inside.... Cons: Service, menu, value, taste more

Va Bene' , Molto Bene' !! 8/5/2008

After hearing about Dicarli from friends, we visited last Saturday. There were two couples in our group; and we all agreed that our dinner was not only superb, but was the best we've had in some time. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable ; the ambience was relaxed ; and the cocktails were different and delicious !!\r For a starter, we had the chilled Honeydew soup that was topped with some Creme fraiche, and a spoonful of spicy red peppers--the perfect foil for the bland coolness of the melon--. Fabulous !! \r Two of our group had the Fish-of-the-Day, which was a perfectly cooked white fish served with a zesty fresh corn and tomato relish accompanyment. My husband enjoyed their signature dish of the Short-ribs with spaetzle which was beautifully prepared.\r The chef's pairing of unusual ingredients ( which end up being wonderful together !) elevates Dicarli's to another level--one we've not seen in Beaverton before . Kudos to Paul and Jana--keep up the good work !! more

Oh So Disappointed 8/4/2008

Finally, we thought, another spot in Beaverton to add to the Mingo/Typhoon/HallStreet Trio standbys. Too bad our first visit was sooooo disappointing. On a Tuesday night they were out of most items we wanted to order and the steak entree - enticing at their menu price - had jumped to $28 with a cut-substition (it's Beaverton fer gawd sake!). After ordering 3 menu items that were not available, I gave the waiter carte blanche to bring any one of their 5 salads; disappointingly, he brought the caesar. Were they seriously out of their other 4, less boring options? Our appetizer pizza - mozzarella and tomatoes - lacked flavor. The pasta was underdone. The dessert should have been delicious but was instead the tail ends of dried out cake cake with too much whipped cream and not enough rasberries. I'd rather the waiter said they were out of one more thing than eat dry ends of cake!\r I really hope the Decarli's pull through and make this spot a success. We walked in thinking what a great spot for a party and left disappointed and reluctant to return. Pros: a decent idea in Beaverton Cons: sadly, nearly everything more

Good time in the 'burbs, who knew? 7/30/2008

I work at a high end restaurant in the Pearl and have been hearing the buzz regarding DeCarli so decided to take a trip to Btown. I first read some reviews which peaked my interest even more, especially the 1 stars. Here's the skinny, they do not take reservations for the bar ( I asked), in fact I don't know any restaurants who do. The appetizers are very good, and no, they're not meant to feed a party of 10, they are APPETIZERS, also known as ""starters"". And, they are not $12-14, which would be ridiculous if it were true, don't believe me check the website. I can only say my drink, the Provencal, was not ""yukky"" as so eloquently described in one review, it was actually quite tasty, albeit on the sweet side for me, and my friend enjoyed her drink as well! As for the people who came for dessert and didn't know a thing, it is quite acceptable to ASK your waiter questions, that is what they are there for. And to the guy who found nothing redeeming but the gelato, did you say something while you were there? OR were you waiting for the hostess to pry it out of you? The lesson here people is, if you have a problem, say something! Most restaurant owners want nothing more than to have guests leave happy, and most waiters, myself included, will do what ever it takes to make that happen- when we know about it. \r As for me, my experience was extremely positive, had the beet salad which was very interesting and good, not flavors I would expect to pair well but did, and the brown butter poached halibut, probably one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. If I lived on Btown, I would eat here a lot! And I will come back for the polenta fries!! For dessert I had the smore's alla decarli, which were crazy good! I think the only ""pretentious pearl wanna-be"" is chick who wrote the review, and by the way, Oba called and they miss you! ( sorry oba)\r \r Pros: everything seemed rock solid, loved the brick Cons: it's in Beaverton more

Finally in Beaverton 7/10/2008

I have to agree with the last review, I have found decarli to be a gem in the burbs. It has been very hard to find a restaurant in Beaverton that you really enjoy going to for the last few years. DeCarli has done it. The staff is very efficient and helpful in their knowledge of the menu and making recommendations that are sure to delight you. Try the Pork Chops!!! As for the bar, they have one of the best 'Happy Hours"" in town and the menu changes almost daily. Robert the Bartender will ask you what you would like and if your having a problem decideing, he will make suggestions that make you wonder, ""why didn't I think of that"". I also believe that they have probably the best selections of liquors in town. As for the person that rated this place a 1 star, have you found another job yet? It is really nice to have another restaurant in town other than the 'Stockpot' to take your guest from out of town out to dinner. Thanks Paul and Jana for bringing your talent to Beaverton. Pros: Great service and Happy Hour Cons: Only opens for dinner more

Finally come home to Beaverton 7/9/2008

Okay folks, I breezed over the reviews past and present, those folks in the pearl should just stay in the pearl. We have our own little gem right here in Beaverton, and it is called Decarli. Decarli is just what we have been needing for such a long time. The staff is always pleasant and friendly, and they make you feel like you are truly coming home. I have fallen in love with ""Happy Hour"", the menu is varied and very well priced, they also offer up drink specials each day. Althought the bartender has created an enjoyable alternative to ""cosmos"". If you are craving something unique then he is more than willing to create a new drink just for you. \r \r Now, let's get to the important stuff, the food. For dinner I heartily recommend the Pork Chop, but not be surprised when you are scraping the plate for the last little bit of the cherry flavors. The salads are all fresh, crisp and made to order. My favorite is their Ceasar, a little on the garlic side, which I adore. Appetizers vary, changing often so that your palate is always exploring new flavor sensations.\r \r I think the best thing about DeCarli is how it appeals to everyone, whether you are budget minded and come to the happy hour, or want to celebrate a special occasion with a gourmet meal. Either way you will be totally satisfied and hooked on my new ""favorite place in Beaverton"". Thank you Paul, Jana and staff for bringing your home to ours. Pros: Variety, happy hour, friendly staff Cons: parking can be harder on the weekends more

Sad service, menu not easy to read 6/30/2008

My family and I went to Decarli because it was close to home and we wanted dessert one Sunday evening. I was very frustrated reading the menu - apparently I am supposed to know exactly what each item is without a description. Do you know what a Boca Negro is? How about a Financier? All I knew is that it was garnished with whatever was listed below the item. The service was not very attentive - maybe because we were only ordering desserts? I decided to try the ricotta cheesecake - I'd never had one before. It was the driest cheesecake I'd ever tasted. I think we got out of there for $35 (3 people eating dessert and coffee only). I don't think that I'll return. Cons: service, price, noisy more

Worst food for the money 6/27/2008

Went there June 6 for a relaxing dinner? service was great, the only redeeming food was the gelato, everything else was salty and overcooked, the saltimbocca was more salt in your mouth than jump in you mouth.\r Let?s put this way they would have to pay me to try the place again.\r The hostess didn?t bother to ask how the food was, at least the waitress was very good.\r So if you want to spend a nice sum of monies and get bad food go for it.\r Pros: gelato was good Cons: to many to name more

Not what the reviews made us believe 6/27/2008

We were excited to try decarli because of the reviews, we had a large group and it was a birthday party. Granted, it was on a Saturday night, however we called and made reservations, even requested bar seating so that if some people only ordered appetizers, we wouldn't feel out of place. When we arrived there was no space for us in the tiny bar (not what we had been led to believe), the bartender was overwhelmed just getting the first 4 to arrive a drink, let alone food. The drinks list looked good, however EVERY single cocktail we ordered was yukky! Not one person thought their drink was ""delicious"". When everyone else arrived, we had to split up between sitting at the bar and sitting at a tiny table near the bar! Unreal! We ordered appetizers for the group, they took over an hour to arrive and were tiny! If I pay $12 to $14 for an appetizer, I expect it to be able to split amongst 4-5 people! We had 5 appetizers for a group of 10 and not everyone got a bite of anything! They didn't look appetizing at all. We were definately NOT going to wait ANOTHER hour for food, especially at $20+ a plate. Why everyone seems to think this place is so great is beyond me. I go to the Pearl regularly to dine and this, my friends, is NO PEARL spot. Just a pretentious, over-priced wanna-be. Don't waste your time. Pros: Location Cons: Service, menu, prices, taste more

BEST RESTAURANT IN BEAVERTON 6/11/2008

We have been to decarli at least 10 times since it opened and we have never been disappointed. The atmosphere, the service, the food is always superb. Beaverton was long overdue for a restaurant of this quality! Our favorite menu items: the polenta fries\r the beet salad\r any of the soups\r the beef short ribs\r the lemon tart\r These are our favorites, but EVERYTHING we have tried has been fantastic!\r Don and Cheryl Dutro Pros: Unique Menu, excellent service, excellent food, great atmosphere Cons: They're only open for dinner! more

Beaverton's best! 5/28/2008

I had heard about this place for a few months and decided to try it out on a whim with a few friends! We were not disapointed. The service was great and friendly, the food was fabulous! The atmosphere was so fun. Like being downtown without the drive. Walking out I had almost forgotten we were in downtown Beaverton. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone I know! Pros: Atmosphere, food, service more

We'll be going back and taking our friends... 5/10/2008

My husband and I had heard there was a new restaurant in town and decided to give it a try tonight. We had no idea how impressed we would be with the atmosphere, the service and the incredible flavors of the food we were served! I had the Balsamic Glazed Pork Chop; it was the most tender, flavorfull pork chop I have ever had! My husband ordered a perfectly grilled salmon over fresh seasonal vegetables with the most incredible smoky flavored sauce; the bite he shared with me was so full of flavor! DiCarli was a ""10"" for us. Before we left the restaurant tonight, we made a reservation for 10 of our friends for a few weeks from now... We can't wait to go back, and we can't wait to share the experience with our friends! I'm glad we made the reservation because when my husband and I left tonight, the resturant was completely full! We aren't the only ones that love DiCarli's. \r \r Pros: incredibly flavored food, ambience, great service Cons: cost more

Downtown cuisine in Beaverton! 4/26/2008

FINALLY! A wonderful alternative to Hall Street Bar and Grill in Beaverton - that isn't a chain! \r This place was great! Great cocktails, great wine selection, great food, great service, great atmosphere!\r It's like going down to the Pearl, but without the parking hassle and the hassle of being downtown! KUDOS!\r \r Pros: It's all good Cons: can't think of any more

DeCarli's - Can't wait for next time! 4/11/2008

My daughter and I tried out DiCarli's the end of March. What a great meal! The atmosphere was very pleasant with the high ceilings, brick walls, and a joysome (but not loud) group at the happy hour bar. Our waitress was very informative as we plied her with questions about some of the menu items. We started with cocktails. I tried their Red drop - similar to a lemon drop but made with grapefruit juice. How wonderful. Our apetizer (we shared) was the polenta fries - my oh my how wonderful. I ate half of mine with the sauce but tried one without. They were so good that I finished the fries without the sauce. They were hot and crispy on the outside yet smooth, almost creamy on the inside. It was an interesting texture change that my mouth kept craving for just one more bite. We then moved on to a fennel salad. I am going to try making it at home as I really enjoyed it. My daughter had the gnocchi (I enjoyed the bite that she reluctantly shared) and I went for the ribs as I had heard so much about them. The sauce was not hot-spicy, wasn't overly spiced and both meat and sauce went together well - neither overpowering and yet supportive to each. My daughter had a glass of wine which one of the staff recommended to go with her main course. She liked it and thought it was a good pairing with the gnocchi (she collects wine so has a good knowledge of what is available). Although we had some of our main courses in take-home boxes, we decided to share a dessert. We both like chocolate but that night the apple-pear cobbler with cinnamon gelato called out to us. It did not last long when it arrived at our table. We definitely will be going back to this restaurant. The food and drink was wonderful, the staff attentive but not hovering, and had great suggestions when we asked. I have heard that the fish dishes are also good so will probably try one of those on our next visit. However it will be after the polenta fries. You can't miss on this place. Pros: I am still thinking about the food even three weeks later. Cons: Make reservations - This place will be filling up quickly on weekends more

Another great dining experience! 3/3/2008

My wife and I were at DeCarli on Feb 28, one day after the latest ""one-star review"" had been posted. Our dining experience there was again very enjoyable. I feel compelled to defend this fine newly-started restaurant against what appears to be a vicious, personal attack against Chef Paul DeCarli and Jana, owners of the restaurant, by someone who attempts to pass themselves off as a Nike employee who apparently doesn't know the difference between the Nike ""swoosh"" and the Adidas stripes. In most Italian restaurants you will find almost obligatory ""standard"" dishes on the menu. I've spoken with Chef Paul previously and found he has the experience, knowledge, and creativity to prepare and present these and other dishes with his own personal flair. For instance, my wife chose the Petrale Sole, the speciality dish of the evening we were there. How often do you see this prized flatfish on a restaurant menu? It's caught right off our coastline, yet it's very expensive for a restaurant to purchase from a freshfish dealer. But my wife enjoyed her large portion of steaming fillets to the point I almost wished I had ordered it instead of the delicious Pork Chop Milanese I was enjoying. Concerning the reviewer's reference to Jana, she has had years of experience serving in exclusive San Francisco restuarants as well as the Pearl's. It's almost ridiculous to think she would treat anyone in such a desultory manner as described by the so-called ""Nike employee."" I'm sure it's obvious to most readers the latest one-star review is untruthful, hurtful, possibly fabricated, and meant to damage the reputations of the restaurant and owners. It's also cowardly and a form of bullying which certainly is not in keeping with the intent of CitySearch reviews. I can almost discern a common thread (cutesy lead-ins, syntax) with more than one one-star review which leads me to believe they have been written by the same individual. This unhappy person should move on. Pros: everything's good! more

Great Atmosphere, Fantastic Food, Awesome Prices 2/27/2008

This is a great find and I am glad me and my sister decided to eat there.\r \r The food was amazing.\r \r For an appetizer we had polenta fries with gorgonzola butter and the caramelized onions with goat cheese cazuela. They were both fantastic, but the cazuela was mind blowing. I already want to go back so I can have some more.\r \r For an entree I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli in the white wine sauce. I just want to say this is the most fantastic sauce I have ever had. You could actually taste the white wine and the roasted garlic was a great addition to the sauce.\r \r My sister had the gnocchi, she is a graduate of Western Culinary Institute, which she says is hard to do right. She was blown away by the great taste.\r \r The open kitchen is great fun to watch.\r \r For dessert we shared the apple and pear cobbler with the cinnamon gelato. It was amazing. The cinnamon was real and the cool spice of the gelato with the warm cobbler was fantastic.\r \r I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. We went on a Tuesday and we didn't need the reservation I had made. The atmosphere was great! The brick walls with the soft lighting was very soothing.\r \r My only complaint is our waitress. She was very flaky and seemed to have trouble serving her three tables with even time. When our entrees came she offered to refill my coke and I never received another coke, she was also only at our table when she cleared the dishes or was giving us our next course. The poor waitress was the only sour note with the staff. The manager and our busboy were very attentive. They were at our table more than the waitress.\r \r The prices are great! The whole night: two appetizers, two entrees and one dessert with tip was only $65.00\r \r I loved this restaurant and will definitely go back. Pros: Great Food, Awesome Atmosphere, Fantastic Food Cons: One Bad Waiter more

is this for real 2/27/2008

i work for Nike and have been in the portland food scene for awhile. Caffe Mingo and Mingo are 2 of my favorite restaurants. I knew that Paul the Chef of Decarli's worked at Caffe mingo before opening his own place. So my friends and I decided to go. I have never been more disappointed. First it was freezing in there. Next the hostess/ owner sat us by slapping our menus on the table then returning to her friends at the bar not saying a word to us. Not a very warm welcome. Then as I look at the menu I was in disbelief. Half the menu if not more was an outright ripoff of Mingo/ Caffemingo. I understand being influenced by places you have worked. But putting items on your menu that are straight off another restaurants menu was unbelievable. The romaine salad and tre bruschetta just to name 2! I thought chef's opened their own place to express their creativity. Not the case here. He is stealing the wave and calling it his. Addias might as well put the swosh next to the strips and call it theirs. The food was just ok, if you want these items done right go to Mingo(beaverton) or Caffe Mingo NW. I will not return and think he should get a palate of his own. It is a shame this is allowed to go on. Beaverton needs more family owned core restaurants but not in this manner. It angers me. They can write all the good reviews they want of themselves but time will tell. Get a menu of your own. Dont let the other 1 star reviews fool you. Pros: no wait Cons: menu items from area restaurants more

We loved it! Don't tell anyone!!! 2/13/2008

We went on a Saturday knowing the place was booked, but the hostess recommended seating in the bar. We ended up with a cozy window seat. We tried a few of the signature cocktails, unique but delicious, and the wine list had some wonderful choices. The food was very good and creative, however, they did run out of the pasta special by 7:30pm. Anyway we had a great time, the bar was not overly noisy, even thought it was packed, which allowed for conversation at our table. We are definitely returning to try out the dining room. Pros: Creative unique food combinations, great wine list and signature cocktails Cons: Busy on the weekends, book early more

FINALLY! 1/7/2008

If you want ""back-of-the-house"" service, go to Hall Street, please! That leaves more room at deCarli for the rest of us!! It's gonna get crowded! This place is a breathe of fresh aire! A truly wonderful menu with spot-on recommendations from the staff! The gnocchi is best-in-class but you better be ready for decadance! Over time it will continue to grow into the space it occupies and for now is a warm urban minimalist feel. Great cocktails, wonderful wine list and kind, genuine people working there. WE LOVE YOU deCarli's!! more
