I finally got to Ago last Thursday, and was weary from reading all of the bad reviews before, especially of the staff. From the moment that I arrived, I was greeted by a super ni...

If you want great food, but would like to be seated 1 1/2 hours after your reservation then this is place for you. I have been to Ago many many times (not by choice my friends don...

great place 5/24/2005

A must go in la. We got a wonderful recommendation from a new friend we met in hollywood and it was fabulous. Delicious arugula salad and the whitefish is wonderful. It's also not terribly expensive. Pros: food, atmosphere, service more

HOLLYWOOD 3/13/2005

I love the fine dining hollywood atmosphere of this little place. Service is outstanding at every level. more

Well worth the money 12/20/2004

This place makes it worth your money as far as food and service is concerned and it's really not so expensive to begin with. You should try weekdays instead of weekends (better chances of running into more of them). I'm not Hollywood-crazed but it's simply just fun to be sitting next to someone you've seen on TV. If you have out-of-state visitors, this is the one restaurant you should take them to. On the down side, even with reservations you're bound to wait. As you can imagine, every time someone "famous" walks in they get to go first. Waiting an extra 1/2 hour didn't bother me that much I got to see and Enzo, a Diablo, and many more exciting cars and people come by. Watch a bunch of old chubbs walk in with their model-like girlfriends & you'll have so much to gossip time will just fly by Pros: run into celeberties, great food, very good service more

Simplistic Excellence 9/17/2004

Ago proves that sometimes, the simplest flavors are what make an excellent meal. Barely noticeable, I missed it twice, Ago sits on the corner of La Cienga and Melrose. The menu is composed of typical Italian fare. The antipastas and soups are nothing out of the ordinary either. However, this is where Ago shines. I had the grilled polenta and burrata (fresh mozzarella with a creamy center) for an appetizer, spinach and ricotta ravioli as a pasta, and the veal chop with balsamic vinegar sauce. Every entre proved that even stripping down a dish to the basics, without any fancy or complicated sauces, is a welcomed event. In partiuclar, the pasta was very fresh tasting and the veal chop was the most tender cut I've ever had. I also want to mention the light and airy ricotta cheese cake for dessert- be sure to save room for it. Pros: Pasta, Prices, Ricotta Cheese Cake more

I'll Pass thanx! 10/21/2003

My friends and I had reservations for 7:30pm for 4 and we were told that it would be ok if we did not get there all at the same time. They would not sit the first two people of our party, who arrived early, at a table for 4. They gave them a table for 2 and once the other 2 arrived we were given the option of sitting in the back, which defeats the point of going to this happening restaurant. The 2 that got there late ended up going to the restaurant next door to eat after they would not sit us down and found it to be a great place. You basically see lots of sheeshee foofoo people rolling in the parking lot with super expensive cars and being full of air. It was kinda interesting just watch them all interact. I certainly would not go back. Pros: nice ambiance Cons: very loud, horrible service more

pass 8/11/2003

a very LA crowd---in the bad sense. pasta was not cooked properly---literally crunchy not al dente and the sauce was WAY too salty. raviolis were good but not worth the trip to come back to this restaurant ever again. was very, very surprised considering the people backing the restaurant. pretentious atmosphere. this restaurant thinks more of itself than it actually is. one trip was enough to know that it was lackluster, would NEVER come back here to eat ever again. agree with the other review that hostess/es were mediocre. more

Celebs and Plebs 7/25/2003

Thursday night is supposed to be celeb night, but all we saw were plebs in this crowded, noisy restaurant. At 6PM, we called to make a reservation for 8PM that night, but the receptionist could only offer us a table in "the small room." While it's a cozy, quiet room in the back, it's also SIBERIA. If you've come to people watch, you'll miss all the action. The tiny bar was three deep, and we ordered delicious peach martiniis until we could be seated. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait long. Too bad the food was forgetable. The beet salad was tasteless, and the raspberry tart was ho-hum. Only the juicy baby rack of lamb was remarkable. Trendier restaurants with better food abound, so skip this one unless you're desperate to catch a glimpse of co-owner, Robert De Niro. Pros: Yummy Peach Martiniis, A Scene, Robert De Niro Cons: Too Loud, So-So Food, Unskilled Hostess more

Delicious gnocchi! 7/7/2003

My fiance and I visited Ago Saturday, July 5th. We had reservations (strongly recommended) and waited about fifteen minutes to be seated. The server seemed rushed, but nice. The food came very quickly! I had the gnocchi with alfredo sauce, and my fiance had the veal ravioli. Their prices are very reasonable for pasta. (Our entrees were less than $20 per). The atmosphere is very busy and quite loud. Not romantic/elegant. Only saw expensive cars rolling through the parking lot, and I agree with other reviewers that many ""wannabes"" were around. We were just in the mood for pasta! Pros: Good food, "LA experience" Cons: Noisy more

Can't Get Into Luques . . . 3/9/2003

Been many times. A consistently steady performer that does not qualify as fine dining but does qualify as a great place to frequent. Always busy, especially later in the evening. A solid 7 (maybe 8 on some nights) across the board and that's not bad. Pros: consistency, food, atmosphere more

They Wouldn't Serve That In Italy 1/2/2003

Ago is apparently the hip place in town to schmooze and make the big deals . . . obviously all those wannabe producers are blubbering and blustering so loudly and so much that they don't notice the quality of the food. Ago is a crowded three ring circus where you can't even hear the folks seated at your own table. The food maybe reminiscient of the hometown fare of its owners but the quality is lackluster and uninspiring. The tomatoes in my cabrese had a hint of green unripedness to them and the mozzarella was chalky. A friend ordered veal which, after two bites, made her nauseated and she quickly left the table. I've spent time in Italy, they wouldn't dare serve the quality of food they served at Ago . . . it would be an embarrasment. Cons: Expensive, Bland Food, Loud more

Definitely for the scenesters 9/19/2002

Ago's food is excellent...thank God because you can't have a conversation with whomever you've decided to go there. The atmosphere is energetic and lively, and you definitely feel like you're "where it's at"; you also feel like everyone is looking around to see what celebrity might be there. Though celeb-hunting is sort of the fun of this place. The service is friendly and attentive, which is unusual for such a happening place. The salmon I had was delicious and my friend thoroughly enjoyed her pasta special. The tiramisu was delicious, too. Go for the food, stay to check out the stars! more
