Disappointing 2/2/2009

The experience is simply not worth the price. The food can either be excellent or chef Boyardee. We had the most perfect Fritto Misto and the worst Spagetti Allo Scoglio. The wine list is lacking and overpriced. We had a Vermentino that was three years old and I am sure it must have been delicious if we had enjoyed it two years ago. The worst however was that we were served by an obnoxious waiter that kept saying ""Beautifull"", ""Wonderfull"" practically to himself everytime he came to the table. The busboy must have been instructed to make as much noise as possible when clearing the table and tried to be cute pouring the water like he was performing a Mayan ritual.\r No, No, No. \r \r This was not the first time we go, but it will be the last. If I am going to pay top dollar for dinner I am going to drive to Brentwood and go to Vincenti Restaurant where the quality and service is worth the price. more

THE ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD!!!!!! 1/2/2009

So I was here on New Year's eve and I know, I shouldn't expect much on that night but I could never have dreamt of a worse experience!!! First of all when we called to make the reservation they assured us that they were serving their regular menu. Personally, I think this is the most over-rated restaurant in the universe, the food is marginal normally and WAY over priced but my friend like's it here. When we sat down they handed us a ""New Year's Eve"" menu. What they essentially did is take a few things off their regular menu and jacked the price up 3x at least. $28 for a green salad???????? I asked our waiter who was seriously, the rudest person I've ever encountered, for a wine list by the glass. He said they didn't have one, which I happen to know is untrue. When I finally got him to admit they do have one he said, ""yeah but not tonight"" Oh I get it, so you can charge me $30 for a glass of $5 chianti???!!!! What he brought me was undrinkable. Not only did he roll his eyes every time we asked him a question he was actually venomously rude. At the end of this horrendous night I understood why. What did he care, they added 20% tip no matter how many people in your party. One person in our party ordered the salmon, which I'm not sure why being that the smell of bad fish in the entire restaurant was making me gag. When we tried to tell the waiter that it was horrible his response was ""well you put sauce all over it"" that was to mask the stench!!!! My friend wouldn't let me see the check when it came but I'm sure the curmudgeon didn't take it off the bill. When the desserts came they looked like they had taken them off unfinished plates from other tables. HOW DOES THIS PLACE STAY OPEN????????? Pros: NONE!!!!!! Cons: horrible food, high prices, rude service more

GREAT FOOD, EXCELLENT SERVICE, RIGHT ON THE MONEY! 7/2/2008

I initially made reservations at IL SOLE for my husband's birthday dinner. However, we were given the "RUSH" at greeting point. We were told that we can only have our table at Il Sole for 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is not enough time to celebrate a birthday with 4 guests. We decided to go to AGO instead and ENJOYED every second of it. From the greeting to the end! We had their soft shell crab special and fritto misto for appetizers, the crab was mouthwatering!!! not overpowering, cooked perfectly! and their Fritto Misto was delicious! not oily, you can taste the squid and chew comfortably. For main course, I had seafood risotto which was nevertheless, a great choice!! my husband had their lamb special, which he devoured! as it was very good! We had a $90 bottle Barbaresco to drink with our food.- PAIRED WELL, thanks to the Somelier... and didn't feel rushed! Our daughter had the Fillet of Sole which was NO WAY NEAR "IL SOLE" Overall, this place is worth the BUZZ! We had a great time and our guest enjoyed the dinner as well. Spent $350 for four - WELL WORTH IT!!!! Pros: warm service, hot food, cool vibe, no pretense Cons: nada more

Bad Food, Expensive, and bad service! 6/4/2008

This place is a typical LA ?hip? restaurant. The food was very bad quality, same sauce for the lamb and steak! Over cooked and dry steak. Appetizers were decent, especially pasta sampler. The service was so bad and unprofessional. It?s the type of service that you get at a 2 star restaurant; however the manager was very polite and caring. We had a big group of 14 people, came up to be $150 per person, the quality of the service and food was close to a $50 place, so over all I would say a rip off. I won?t go there for the second time, unless I have to for a BD party or something Pros: Ambience Cons: Service, Price, Food more

Refreshingly Simple Plates with EXTRAORDINARY Flavor! 5/22/2008

Wow, I didn't know that pasta could taste this good! I'm not kidding you when I say that I was delightfully surprised with every bite. From the apps to the main course to dessert: everything I tried was STELLAR! It's a rare & welcome occassion that I leave a restaurant in LA thinking, "wow, that was worth every penny!" Perhaps more refreshing was the simplicity of dishes. There are no complicated flavor combinations or frilly garnishes or overly structured presentations at Ago--just phenomenal fare made with fresh ingredients. Great wines & service too. more

Great food, horrible service 4/11/2008

If you want great food, but would like to be seated 1 1/2 hours after your reservation then this is place for you. I have been to Ago many many times (not by choice my friends don't mind waiting at the bar and checking out the scene for over an 1 hour and as I said the food is great). The host and hostess do not care if you are a regular patron unless you slip them a $50 bill (which did happen on a date and they did sit us right away), which I think is ridiculous especially after spending so much on the food. If you do go the pizza, mushroom risotto, and pasta on the menu is fantastic. The meat and fish dishes are so/so. If you do get the langostinos appetizer (not on the menu you have to special request them), be aware that they are seasonal and can cost you upwards of $60 depending on the day. more

awesome mozzerella appetizer, dark and romantic (for a date with myself) 3/8/2008

I dined alone, experience was great, 6pm on a Saturday, wasn't busy yet, very attentive wait-staff. I read the other reviews before I wrote this and was a bit shocked to see how horrible a time some folks had! It looks like it probably gets really packed, but I was literally the only one in the outdoor dining at 6pm on a Saturday (I was walking by and felt like Italian, never even heard of the place before that). My food was excellent, I had 2 glasses of wine, the mozzarella appetizer with tomatoes (superb) and the veal raviolis... AWESOME.... and priced right for just under $75 bucks with tip. I go out to eat pretty much every night, and I must say this was one of the best times I've had by myself out eating in quite a while (I'm talking all the places in LA... Eat on Sunset, Lucky Devils, the restaurants at the Grove, etc. ... but really, I think it was because the place was basically mine! whoohoooo! Folks started arriving around 7pn though... Pros: i really enjoyed the food ALOT! good stuff! Cons: look like you have to go early, i had a great time when I was the only one there! more

Worst customer service, disgraceful establishment 2/24/2008

I absolutely do not recommend this restaraunt. I made reservations for 14 people on a friday night for my wife's birthday, and I was told that it's too many people to have individual orders, that instead it will be ""family style"" and that I will be explained the details of this when we get there. To me, family style means you order a bunch of courses and everyone shares. Oh contrare. No one explained to me what it meant or how much it would cost. They said something about having caprese, calamari, pasta, steak and fish. I told the waiter that we probably wouldn't want steak and fish, next thing I know they start bringing the food. We never even saw the menu. Of course we had a couple of vegetarians, one person with extensive food allergies, and had to notify the waiters who never asked. At the end of the night they stuck us with a $1400 bill with a high tip. It would have been nice to know what we were getting into from the getgo. The worst part, however, is that they overcharged my credit card and I had to go through the math with them twice! as they overcharged it AGAIN, then FINALLY got it right the third time after I got upset. When I told the manager, he basically didn't care and said that most of the food was eaten so it's worth the price. Now my credit card company is calling me because they never cancelled the first two charges and are essentially charging my card three times the price. Now I have to get back in touch with this restaraunt to ask them to cancel the original charges. I've never seen such poor, disgraceful, horrible treatment of customers in my life and I will NEVER go back to this establishment. Pros: Good Food Cons: Rip off, terrible service, overcrowded, don't know how to run a business more

Valentine's Day Nightmare 2/18/2008

My boyfriend flew all the way out from New Jersey for a special Valentine's Day. He chose Ago for a special romantic Italian dinner. The experience was not romantic, nor special. I felt so bad that he had spent the airfare for such a miserable evening. Even with reservations, we had to stand at the crowded bar, elbow room only, waiting 30 minutes, only to be seated in a corner next to the outdoor dining section. It was so cold we could not take off our coats. I think I saw the waitor twice, once to take our order breifly, while ignoring our questions and running off. We did not see him again until he dropeed the check on the table. The items on the pre-fixed menu were vague, and very non-elegant. We ordere the mixed fried fish. Yes.. fried fish. Couldn't tell you what was in the mess. For dinner, i had the ribeye steak, which was 90 percent grizzle. After eating the two bites of edible steak, we really just wanted to leave. 15 minutes later we were able to get the check... from the busboy! AND the neglectful waitor had taken the liberty to WRITE IN a 20% tip on the $140 credit card receipt! Isn't that illegal? Ago may be decent on "non-holidays", I would not know. But if you're looking for a romantic special dinner with a loved one, I would not reccomend this one ! Cons: no parking, bad service, over priced, poor food. more

Los Angeles Italian at its best! Uber Fabulousness Itailian is delivered in perfect doses! 1/2/2008

When you make it through the packed door... passing over celebrity after celebrity you will be treated to a fan-fare of perfection! Sit on the Patio it is ever so lovely! Of course have the concogtion of the night with a delightful and sinfully wicked Peach Martini! Pros: Great Patio. Romantic! Peach Martini's from Heaven Cons: Wait staff all have a perhaps false Italian Accent.. but hey roll with it ! more

Spa-esque and delightful 12/28/2007

I read so many negative reviews about this restaurant and they were all wrong. Must have been submitted by a bunch of savages looking for California Pizza Kitchen...or should I say CPK...instead of an amazing, authentically italian dinner. Pricey for sure but we were treated like a king, queen and prince. Terrific. Americans and weird tacky eurotrash looking for 600 pound plates of food served with a craven, hooters-esque suburban "flair", please stay far, far away. Pros: fantastic food, great, attentive service Cons: a little bit pricey but worth the money more
