try the duck 11/8/2010

I highly recommend the duck confit and pan roasted breast. It was perfectly cooked and very tender. I have eaten a similar dish at two other area restaurants and this was definitely the best. My wife had the soy glazed wild Alaskan King Salmon and it was fine, but nothing special. more

Great Dining Experience!!! 7/30/2010

I absolutely love the Wine Cellar in Los Gatos, CA! if you want a great lunch or dinner dining experience you must check out the Wine Cellar! Obviously they have GREAT wine selections, but their salads, apps and dinner are very good! They have the best fondue and desserts. I have dined here many of times and have never been let down. Lunch on the patio with my dad, birthday dinners in large groups, every time has been delicious and a great dining experience! They have a very nice, small bar that is fun for happy hour or drinks with friends. Its quaint, dim and kinds romantic! Check it out! Pros: outdoor seating, cellar dining, unique menu Cons: can be pricey but well worth it more

Upscale American Restaurant with Underground Dining Area 3/24/2010

Tried this restaurant once and I don't think I am a big fan of the food or ambiance. There was nothing really wrong but nothing really memorable either. For dinner I have ordered - Traditional Swiss & Gruyere Fondue Duck Confit and Pan Seared Breast Soy Glazed Wild Alaskan King Salmon The taste and presentation did not meet my expectation for restaurants at this price range. Everything was just average. The appetizer fondue was probably the better dish out of my entire dinner. The duck confit came out dry rather than crispy. The duck breast was not nearly tender enough. Salmon was over done as well. I have had better salmon at restaurant charging half the price. This restaurant is pretty huge. They have a really busy outdoor dinning area and an underground cellar dinning room. It took me a while to find the right maitre'd. Would have been nice if someone actually showed us where to check in. Pros: Wine Cellar Dining Room more

Great choice for dining in Los Gatos! 4/4/2008

The Wine Cellar is one of our favorite restaurants. This is where we held our employee Christmas dinner this year since La Fondu was such a disappointment the year before. All eight of us were raving about our meals and we were impressed with how well they managed to serve quickly on such a busy night. We all love the ambience at The Wine Cellar. My husband and I like to pop in there for a glass of wine and an appetizer when we're shopping in Los Gatos. It just has a great feeling there. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The employees are friendly and the service is fast. I highly recommend the short ribs! The only dish we did not like was the ""apple crisp"" for dessert. It simply was not sweet enough to be a dessert and the topping was not crisp at all. When I gave this feedback to the waiter, he said that there are so many people who come there specifically for the apple crisp, I realized that their recipe is one you either love or hate. But everything else was outstanding, including all the other desserts we ordered. Definitely two thumbs up. more

So-so 3/12/2008

I read through many reviews to determine the best restaurant to celebrate my husband's birthday. The menu looked promising and the management showed that they really cared about their business.\r \r We ordered the abalone, which was pretty tasty. My salmon was also pretty good and so was my husband's duck (order it medium). The sauces (on the abalone, salmon and duck) were the highlight of our night; they really complemented our dishes. At the end of the night, all the food added up to a bit over $100 (without wine). So, everything ended pretty well; nothing special. \r \r I personally thought that our last celebration at Crimson restaurant in Los Gatos was by FAR superior to the Wine Cellar. It was cute, romantic, the food was AMAZING, and the bill including appetizer, 2 entrees, and dessert, and wine was only about $85. I loved it. \r \r Our experience at Wine Cellar paled in comparison to Crimson. I won't be visiting Wine Cellar again because there was really nothing out-of-the-ordinary there. more

great wine, great meals 2/15/2008

I just had Valentaine's day dinner with my husband there. \r \r OMG, it was a great dinner! I have never had such tender lamb chops before!\r Great wine, great atmosphere, great location too. \r I had crab cakes to start off the evening. Crispy outside, moist/soft inside. \r \r I love that waldorf salad with maple vinegarette. \r My husband really liked the Tiramisu. I had Napoleon to finish off the evening. \r \r This place never disappoints me. \r more

awsome steaks 11/24/2007

I want too let everyone know what a great experience I had at the Wine Cellar. If you want a great steak come here. The service was excellent to match the food. I can not wait to come back for lunch to see what that part of the menu has to offer. more

very slow service, do not recommend if you actualy want to eat 11/21/2007

Waited for over 1 hour, when waiter was asked about our food it turned out he forgot to order it. \r Do not recommend more

Customer service needs work 10/4/2007

I have lived in Los Gatos 36yrs I go to most restaurants in the area, I called the wine celler to make a reservation for ten I was told thats fine and they needed my credit card to hold a reservation at 6pm I don't give out my card info since I have had fraud twice in the last 6 months I told the manager this and was told they couldn't make the reservation I said ok thanks and hung up.\r Well it turned out to be the best thing I ever did, I ended up making a reservation at Crimson on the other side of town the 10 of us showed up and we all agreed it was one of the most fantastic meals we have had in years.\r I am not one to give out compliments easy since I have been in the restaurant business for 36 years but the Crimson deserves a big big thumbs up. more

Birthday Bummer 7/8/2007

After using Citysearch reviews as a guide, I took my husband out to Wine Cellar for his birthday. According the reviews, Wine Cellar is considered one of the most ""romantic"" spots in Silicon Valley but we could barely hear one another speak the entire evening (7-9:30pm). Not exactly the most intimate ambience. It was similar to a hall--with nothing to absorb sound. \r Also the hostesses (one in particular who was stationed outside by the patio but kept hanging out with the hostesses inside) were rudely oblivious & blocked guest traffic to the corridor bathroom when chatting(already an inconvenient location as it's across from where servers pick up the food). As an 8 month pregnant lady, I really don't appreciate having to elbow my way to the nearest lavatory. They didn't even notice that guests were waiting on them to move.\r Our waiter was average and the food was overpriced for its quality. After mentioning my husband's birthday to the hostess and on my open table reserveration, they still forgot. I had to remind the waiter who put a candle in the average banana sundae & that was it. They did not comp my husband's dessert (for his b'day) which I thought was tacky. We're never going back. Pros: Location Cons: Everything else more

Great Cozy Place & fresh food 4/17/2007

I've been going to the Wine Cellar for so many years and the food is consistently fresh and wonderful! I go specifically for the fondue though. I also enjoy the cozy and private feeling of the ambience. The fondue is by far my favorite thing there and I like to follow it up with a nice fresh salad and if I have room, maybe a dessert chocolate fondue too. \r \r Last weekend I was actually up in time to enjoy Sunday Brunch. I loved the fruit and pastry bar and my avocado and tomato benedict was delux. Also notable were the fresh potatoes. At other places one of my pet peeves are soggy and luke warm potatoes. None of these things here though. They were actually made fresh and were piping hot. \r \r I always enjoy The Wine Cellar and am apprehensive to do a review on it because I don't want it to become ruined by huge crowds. \r \r Cheers! \r more

A Big 0 12/21/2006

I travel a lot and have had the opportunity to experience some of the best fine dining establishments from New York to Paris. Never in any of my years of travel going to some of the worlds finest restaurants have I ever been turned away because I was dining alone. On a Wednesday evening I showed up at the Wine Cellar restaurant for dinner and was turned away because I was alone. The hostess offered me take-out as an alternative. I was humiliated. \r This restaurant is a big zero. I will be sure to tell any of my business associates about my experience, and also mention all the poor ratings mentioned on this site, when asked for recommendations in this area. more

Pretty good! 6/7/2006

I was impressed by the service and atmosphere. The sirloin I had was a little on the dry side, but overall everything was good. I came here for a birthday dinner. The desserts are excellent. It's as the editorial said, it's a cozy basement restaurant. more

Unfortunate 5/23/2006

I visited the Wine Cellar for a birthday celebration with a large group. Upon arrival, the organizer informed the hostess she had one more to add. The hostess ultimately caused a scene, saying ""...it's an inconvenience when you make huge changes to your reservation..."", and ""let me go figure out how to make this work...."" Any restaurant, when faced with this common request, should be able to handle it in a discreet, courteous fashion. This was not the case. Instead, the hostess nearly berated the organizer! As much as we tried to enjoy ourselves, sadly it set the tone for the rest of the evening. The Wine Cellar's hostess turned out to be an owner as well. Very surprising. A guest at the table turned out to be a wine consultant who refers clientele here for their reputation. This experience will cease future recommendations to The Wine Cellar. Unfortunate. more

Never again! 5/9/2006

Booked a dinner for a birthday(17 total). Upon arrival, asked to add 1 seat to a completely empty dining room. Once we were seated, the OWNER came out and, rather than thank us for choosing their restaurant, yelled at me, from the other end of the table, explaining how much of an inconvenience it was that we added 2 to our count (we only added 1). Unfortunately, her angry tirade set the mood of our party. Waiter was rude to all guests and, at one point, slammed a dinner plate down, in frustration, when one guest switched seats. Before leaving, I spoke with the owner to give feedback and thought she would attempt to apologize. I was wrong! Instead, she was argumentative and felt that her behavior was justified. If you're looking for a restaurant where customers are treated as a priority, do not go to the Wine Cellar. Pros: outdoor patio Cons: horrible customer svc, no flexibility, rude waitstaff more

Food Great, Poor Service 5/8/2006

Attended for a special birthday dinner. The food was definitely enjoyable. The pork chop with the pinot wine sauce was a palette pleaser. The wine list is quite extensive as would be expected for a restaurant called wine cellar. Various varietals and price ranges to choose from. I agree with another reviewer, decor is on the cheesy side...Marie Callendars caliber. The management staff and service received was rude and made me feel like a second class citizen. They were unaccomodating initially and never felt the need to apologize for their rudeness. Pros: Good Food Cons: Service, Poor Mgmt. more

Great Experience on Important Day 2/10/2006

I selected this restaurant based on the reviews, hoping for a great meal and service. We got both. The lamb chops were excellent, as was the fondue. We also had a great merlot. I can't say enough about the friendly and prompt service. Highly recommended. Pros: Service, Entrees Cons: Parking more

Fantastic Steaks 8/30/2005

I have ate at the Wine Cellar a couple of times. Most recentley last Monday and always end up ordering a steak and am never disappointed. They are perfectly cooked and full flavored. I had the Ribeye most recentley and the Filet the two times before that. My wife cycles between Lamb chops and Short Ribs both also very good. Great restaurant will be back again shortly. Pros: Steaks more
