Have called several companies in our search for a home security service and ended up going with Smith Thompson. I chose to write an early review on my experience so far, especially after seeing some bit of debate over whether or not people should use this company, to give folks an honest opinion from a regular person that has no incentive to either promote or bash this company.
I called STSS late last week inquiring about service. I liked that there would be no contract (just 30 days to cancel), the option for cellular link, and they weren't trying to nickel and dime me for every little feature like ADT did. If their response center goes down due to weather, they are set up to switch over to remote monitoring... so this cut the 'advantage of ADT' in having various centers around the States. The guy who took my call (after a very short wait on the phone) answered all my questions confidently and calmly. It also turned out a few of the pieces of equipment we wanted were on sale at the time I called, but in general their equipment fees and monthly pricing were more favorably priced than other companies I called... bonus! I didn't ever feel like I was getting a major sales pitch like I did w/ the ADT guy that game to my house a week ago (who couldn't even explain to me why ADT was better than other companies), or hounded for days about whether or not I was going to select their company (this was another company called Smith Monitoring in Houston) as I continued to shop around. I got my STSS system installed just 3 days after calling. Lloyd was my tech and he was on-time, very knowledgable, a bit jokey (all in good nature!) but still very professional, and was very thorough w/ the install. Upon testing everything, he noted there was an issue w/ the front door sensor and fixed it right up. No extra charge. After the install, he walked me through how to use the keypads, the remote, and gave some practical suggestions of how to use the system - esp. with young kids in the house that know how to unlock and open doors.
So far, I have been impressed. Friendly customer service thus far, nice/decreet-looking keypads, etc. Lloyd even instructed me about how I need to get an alarm permit and knew how much it would be for my particular county. We will be up & running by tonight/tomorrow morning. I will be back to provide another review after we get a chance to test it out (if all goes well, I will upgrade my rating from 4 to 5 stars!). But so far, so good!
**************************
This is an update to my previous review and upgrade from 4 stars to 5 now that we've tested the system a few times. We've had their service now for a couple of weeks and have accidentally set off the alarm twice. The first time, I had gone outside where there was a lot of noise due to the landscapers that were at our home at the time. So when I didn't pick up my cell phone (didn't hear!), they called my husband (who had been unable to pick up as he was in a meeting), and then my parents.... just as we had instructed them to do on our list of contacts. I later saw the time of the call from ST and it had to have been within a minute or two of when I went outside, possibly less. Then, last night I tripped it again going out to cover some plants around 10:15 PM. The alarm went off immediately and ST called within 30 seconds.
I am convinced that all these negative reviews out there have to be false as some others have implied because my experience has been nothing but terrific. Very happy we supported a local business and very happy with the service they are providing. Remember there is no contract like most other services require. So try it for yourself before giving in to internet review fears... if you aren't happy, you can always cancel & go elsewhere. But I'm pretty sure you won't.
