Great place. Five stares all the way. I have a difficult prescription and am very picky. The staff was incredibly helpful. I got beautiful new glasses and the lenses are the thinnest I've ever had. Cost me almost $200 LESS than anything I've ever bought before plus I got a 2nd pair free!! Totally Free! they look great, I got them in just 2 days. Everyone ;loves them. I cant recommend these folks any higher. Best place for sure more

Editorial review from Citysearch 10/18/2013

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS. Very sloppy, rude customer service. Cheap AND dishonest.\r \r I bought glasses here that came with a scratch on one of the lenses. I went in to pick up my glasses and they could not find the glasses at all. After looking for 10 minutes or so they finally found them, with the scratch. The owner (Paul) told me he would immediately order a new lense but that I could take them away to use in the meanwhile. But apparently he forgot all about it and forgot to note the date I picked up the glasses in their records or that their was a defect they were going to fix...\r \r .... One year later still waiting for them to replace my lense. I finally went in to get the lense replaced. The owner denies ever telling me that he would replace the lense but now says that if I BUY one new lense (at full cost) he will replace the defective lense. He basically said I was making it all up and blaming me for not insisting that they do what they were supposed to do-- order me a new lense and then call me when it was ready.\r \r In addition, they refuse now to honor the one year scratch warranty. I originally ordered the lenses a year ago on October 5. I picked them up a couple of weeks later. But they did not give me any paperwork on the pick up and now because the owner neglected to make a note in their records that I had even picked up the glasses they are claiming October 5 warranty expiration.\r \r These people are cheap, rude, sloppy and dishonest. more

Wide variety 4/14/2011

This place is so much cheaper than Berkeley Optometry which is where I have been going for years. They also have a wide variety of glasses to choose from and they constantly have deals like buy one get one free. If you have anthem blue shield, you also get a discount. more

So far so good 4/12/2011

So far, so good. After several trips to fancier and more expensive boutiques, I wandered into Site For Sore Eyes. Found a fun and stylish German frame at half off, handed over my prescription, was fitted on the spot, and will have the frames in a few days. Plus, because I was unsure about the color, Paul has ordered the same frame in a different palette. If I prefer them, I can exchange them for the pair I bought. . . . And that's not all: they are currently running a two for one promotion. I can choose a frame from their limited selection of cheapie frames and get a second pair for free. Or I can have new lenses put into my old frames. Seems like a good deal to me. more

Excellent! 4/8/2011

I absolutely love the selection and service at the Berkeley Site for Sore Eyes!! They are always very helpful in finding me glasses that accentuate my best features. I have been going to them for over 8 years, and they never fail to impress me. I would highly recommend them to all. I picked up two pairs of glasses this afternoon, and was truly impressed with the quality and fit of them. Although they are not the cheapest eyeglass store, they are the best, and they provide a very generous replacement service, as well as lenses which carry a lifetime warranty against scratches. If you are looking for prescription glasses, I would definitely suggest that you check them out first. Oh, and my glasses were ready three days sooner than they said they would be. Excellent! more

Satisfied 4/7/2011

I just used Site for Sore Eyes for the third time. As before, I am quite satisfied. They were friendly and competent, had a wide selection, the price was good. The doctor making my prescription was very careful and thorough. Everything was fine. more

happy customer 4/6/2011

I am a happy Site for Sore Eyes customer. I had issues with my glasses, and, as they were under warranty, I got them replaced. However, when the issue happened again, I thought I was out of luck. However, Paul, the manager (owner?) sensing my frustration, went over and above to make matters right. Hopefully he can even talk the manufacturer into doing their part. Paul can seem brash as he is from New York and he tends to ""cut right to the chase"". Some folks in easy going Berkeley can take him the wrong way. However, I think he is a fair and decent guy and is really concerned that his customers are happy so they keep coming back. After all, there are many places that can sell glasses. I judge and optical center on how they treat you after they make the sale. Thumbs up to Site For Sore Eyes. I also really liked the optometrist. more

Great Service 4/1/2011

I was pretty happy with the service I received here. They had a pretty good selection of frames compared to LensCrafters. Everyone was pretty helpful and they were easy to get an appointment with. They were able to retrofit my current frames no problem. more

I love my glasses 3/29/2011

I have had great success in Site for Sore Eyes, Berkeley. The manager/owner, I think his name is Paul, is an excellent salesman who always finds the right glasses that fit me. As a guy, I need someone who can be straight with me if they look right. He is, and he doesn't hard sell it. He also stands by his word. I have returned glasses more than once and he happily accepts them. But this year he topped himself: he encouraged me to buy a pair I felt were a little stretch for me. WHen I got home, everyone thought they were outstanding on me. I went back and shook his hand thank you. But 2 months later someone rolled over them destroying them. I did not buy insurance and he did not have the same pair to replace it. I replaced them with a similar design but not quite as dynamic. He sold them to me at cost, and threw in insurance on this pair. When I seemed still dissatisfied, he offered to see if he couldn't get another pair like mine-they required a special order-and if he could he'd exchange them for the new version. After a few weeks I gave up that it would happen, but one day I got a call and he had managed to get a pair. I went in and he happily exchanged them for the replacement frames. this was beyond the call of duty. I love my glasses. I think this guy is legit. I will continue to get my glasses there. more

Extremely Positive Experience 3/22/2011

I had an extremely positive experience with SFSE -- it was definitely the best experience I've ever had in a glasses place. I only went there because the place down the block, For Eyes, (which I went to 5 times looking for frames,) didn't have frames that I liked. I told Paul that I'm very picky about frames and in fact may be a ""problem customer."" He said, ""Problem customers are my specialty"" and was So Helpful in helping me pick out frames. The glasses were ready the next day! - as promised. I didn't like the decision I made to get ""smart glasses"" (which automatically transition to sunglasses) and again, as promised, they changed them to regular glasses - the next day! In the mail I received a $25 coupon, which I put towards my 2nd pair of glasses - which are free if you get a single lens, but I got them as progressives so there is additional cost for that. I really like the 2nd pair too and they were also ready - the next day! My clip-on sunglasses arrived a couple of weeks later. I dealt mostly with Bill after picking out the frames and I found him very knowledgeable, helpful and conscientious. I highly recommend Site for Sore Eyes in Berkeley. more

great frame retailer 3/16/2011

Site For Sore Eyes is a great frame retailer. I had my exam down the street but found the selection there to be less than satisfactory. I came here, was offered help and found the frames that I wanted. They have a frame for everybody and great staff to help you choose it. And because of their sale I ended up getting the best deal in town! more

Best Glasses Buying Experience 3/11/2011

Can't say more positive things about these guys. Broke my old glasses, they got me in right away, were incredibly helpful finding the right frame (soo many to choose from), made them right away and I even got a 2nd pair (so I won't have this problem again) FREE. The price I thought was more than fair considering the great service and friendly staff. I, for one am happy and will definately go there again. more

Dishonest and sneaky 1/19/2011

One star is too good for this place. They use pushy sales tactics to get your money. They are dishonest and greedy. They don't care about customer satisfaction one bit. They pressured me into pre-paying for contact lenses I wasn't sure I was even going to like because they were on sale. After I tried the contacts, they irritated my eyes badly so naturally I wanted my money back, which I should've received because I never even ordered any contacts!! But they were rude and unhelpful and wouldn't give me a refund on something I never even ordered or received. Are you kidding me?? BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU GIVES THEM AN F RATING....explains it all. They just care about taking your $$$. more

Customer Service Sucks!!! 3/3/2010

I went in last week to get new frames. The main lady that helped me was very insincere. She looked like she was looking right through me the whole time and as if she was just too good to be helping me. Very fake the whole time. I wanted to take advantage of their current deal (which in the end was not deal at all), so I decided to stay. When the lady rung up my sale she added in all these extra charges and never bothered to explain or even acknowledge the charges. Just the worst. I just called a few minutes ago to see if I could find out if my glasses where ready, and the person that answered the phone today was just as rude as the lady that helped me last week. Good grief!! It’s amazing their still in business. Pros: Nothing so far... Cons: Bad communication, bad customer service more

Yikes 1/18/2010

Is there something less than one star?? Buyer, please beware! Brought in my old glasses for new lenses (old ones chipped). Was told they were not covered by my insurance (not true!), paid $150 (should have been close to 0), glasses returned 2 weeks later, were unusable. Told that they could not be done, talked into buying new glasses ($350, again told not covered --- yet they filed with insurance for compensation...double dipping, which I will report to BBB and others). New glasses ready in a few weeks, though no phone call when ready. Then told they would repair original glasses for free. One month later, no phone call. Told they were not there when I called. Stopped by today, original glasses were done and perfect. Bait and switch, what I wanted done was finally done, but put out big bucks for job that should have been covered originally. Do they sound like thieves to you? Never again. Cons: Ripped off more

Decent Prices and Selection 5/21/2009

I think the reviews on here aren't fair to this place. Check it out before you decide. I don't have tons of money and think that this place is good for those of us who can't afford the most expensive pair of glasses. Another place I went to in Berkeley was so snobby--de Visu or whatever it's called. This place wasn't snobby at least. Pros: extensive collection and 2nd pair free Cons: customer service mediocre more

Be Afraid, be very afraid. Worst customer service I've experienced. 10/16/2008

This is by far one of the most disturbing customer experiences I've ever had. Poor customer service, Less than knowledgeable employees. Terrible, and I mean terrible customer service.\r Went to get my wife's eyes checked and get new glasses. The store manager helped us pick new frames for her Progressive lenses. Were told 3-4 days. 2 weeks later I called to see where the glasses were. Was told they'd be ready in 2 more days. They weren't ready for 5 more days. Picked them up. They weren't right. My wife couldn't read with them, the main reason she needed glasses. A very rude Optometrist came out of the back and, rather than help, simply gave my wife a hard time. Finally, one of the lab techs came out and simply said the frames are to small for progressive lenses. No room for the reading part of the lense. Remember, it was the store manager that picked the frames out and wrote up the order. So, new lenses had to be ordered, ""Access"" lenses this time, not ""Progressive"". We paid more money for the Progressives and should have gotten at least a store credit, right?? After all, the store manager herself picked the wrong frames for Progressive lenses. \r There's even more to this horror story. Bottom line? Stay away from this store. more

Avoid at all costs 10/12/2008

Horrible service all around. If I could give it less than one star I would. They act nice when you first walk in, then give you such horrible attitude after that. It took me over 10 visits to get my glasses and contacts right, and they acted like it was my fault. They lure you in with a deal, then bait and switch you, make you pay in full even if you have insurance, then they have your own insurance reimburse you, which is less as they are contracted to take a certain cost, so you pay more for less. Stay away from this place. Either go down the street to For Eyes, where they are VERY nice and have great service or go to Cal Berkeley eye center, you get a great exam by students, using stuff no regular place has, then you are checked by a regular dr - and parking is free. Pros: Not much Cons: Most Everything more

A class Act 3/31/2007

After so much trouble other places with my progressive lenses, they really listened to my issues. They carefully explained all my options. I did not realize how different progressive lenses were. They recomended Zeiss lenses. I was a little reluctant because they cost more but when I got them I couldn't believe how great I saw. They seemed very professional and really knowledgable. I was measured carefully and explained my options in great detail.\r \r I'm thrilled with my new glasses, the best I've ever had. After going cheap at Costco I realize sometimes you really do get what you payy for. BTW, I priced my Zeiss lenses at a couple of other places and Site For Sore Eyes was over $100 CHEAPER for the same lenses. Altogether I could not reccomend them more highly. Pros: Very knowledgable more

Do not go there. 10/18/2006

Aside from the fast contact lense exam, all aspects of service at this place was below average at best. The manager there was much like a used car sales person. She kept on trying to get me to buy more expensive contact lenses, despite the fact the I've worn same brand of contact lense for over 4 years and made it clear to her that I would have preferred same brand. Another annoying thing was when I asked to use restroom after the exam she replied ""We don't have restroom here."" Not having restroom available for solictor is one thing, but for customers is a completely different matter. Also, when I did go back to pick up the contact lenses on the day I was supposed to pick them up, their only reply was ""it's not here"". You would think they would at least call you about expected delay, so that you don't have to wasts your time. I had to take initiaitve and keep calling the shop to see when it will arrive. Since most of the customer are cal students who will likely not going to be a repeat customer, the incentive for management to provide a ""good"" service for customers is almost non-existent, and it shows. Pros: Fast eye exam Cons: Horrible service, Pushy Sales person, Long wait for contact lense more
