One of the best in Atlanta 4/2/2011

While this place is pricey, it is well worth it for that rare occasion. Every course was prepared to perfection and the service was exceptional. Make sure you save room for dessert as it was excellent, and they bring out hand make chocolates and cookies with the check that help cap off a night to remember more

Fine dining at its... well, finest! 6/11/2010

As a fan of Holeman + Finch, it was almost odd that I hadn?t experienced Restaurant Eugene first, seeing as how RE came first, whereas H + F is the recent brainchild of 2010 James Beard Award nominee for best chef in the southeast, Chef Linton Hopkins. With an award nomination like that, the bar was set pretty high, and I was expecting to be wowed. Mission accomplished. RE is definitely more of a special occasion dining experience, and I couldn?t help but feel like a hybrid between Kate Spade and SATC?s Charlotte on my fancy night out on the town, being attended to by several different wait staff throughout the evening, and never having to ask for anything ? refills, more bread, new silverware, everything just appeared without having to ever ask. But the food is the main reason you came, and you won?t be disappointed. While the menu is ever changing, in keeping with what?s fresh and current at the farmers markets and the season, highlights on my recent visit included Oysters from the west coast (the best coast for Oysters, by the way), braised pork belly, beet salad with a whipped goat cheese, soft shell crab (OMG moment!) and duck. Every dish had clever mixes of vegetables, fruits and sauces that were surprise combinations, and which all seemed to work seamlessly. For dessert, this notion rang true with a blend of sweet and savory. A goat cheese cake with graham cracker on the side, sweet onion relish turned jam, and braised baby carrots, and a peanut butter mousse with chocolate cake crumble, topped with candied bacon ? After the last bite was consumed, I was actually disappointed the meal was at an end. And I?m already scheming for an excuse to return? Half birthdays count as a celebration, right? Pros: Great food, great service, parking, special occasion Cons: Hard to get good reservation time more

Creative, Delicious and Sophisticated 1/28/2010

We opted for the five course tasting menu with wine pairing and I am still thinking of it. Our server Chris took great care of us and the meal itself both surprised and comforted me. I had never had sea urchin before and I think I now crave it. It came in a small glass with caviar and champagne and a little salt. Exquisite! The duck was meaty and served withj mushrooms with a sauce I couldn't stop sopping up with my bread, which is also delicious. It is the best bread in town by the way and comes from their own bakery The lemon tart finished the meal with palate cleansing brightness. Overall: Brilliant Pros: tasting menu, service and surprisingly price more

not impressed 6/6/2009

I went to Restaurant Eugene with a group of friends this past Friday night. I was anxious to see what the hype was about. Our reservation was at 6:45...it took our waitress 30 minutes to get a drink order....we had to wait another 15 just to ask for bread while we were waiting for her just to take an order for starters. Cheese tray, pretty good, managed to flag her down for an order for our main course. As the restaurant is filling up(keep in mind we were the first table seated), the restaurant was full and everyone was eating except us. At this point, it was 9. While we were looking at our watches, that is when the waitress could saw the confused look on our faces and told us that the food was coming...we received our food close to 10. Normally, my friends and i would love to order desserts and more drinks, but at this point, we had already been there for three and half hours and were ready to leave. Pros: water glass was always full Cons: SLOW service, small portions more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE-WORST SERVICE 10/6/2008

I went to Restaurant Eugene this past Friday night for a dinner with girlfriends. We chose this restaurant based upon the great reviews that it received. We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated by the hostess. After waiting 15-20 minutes, our waitress finally took our drink order and asked for our water preference. 15 minutes later we had our drinks and about 20 minutes later our waitress showed back up to take our dinner order. By this time, we had been at the restaurant for ~45-60 minutes and had only seen our waitress 3 times. She informed us that one of the menu items was sold out. Had we actually been taken care of earlier when we arrived, I doubt that entree would have been sold out! They finally brought bread to our table after we asked for it. We had to ask another waiter to get us a 2nd round of drinks. After being at the restaurant for 1.5 hours, we received our food. It was good but certainly not what you would expect from one of the top restaurants in Atlanta. We are in our late 20s and were by far the youngest people there which I believe had everything to do with the horrible way we were treated. Most everyone around was > 60...and the tables around us turned twice in the time that we were there. We enjoy fine dining and have never been treated this way at any other restaurant. I will not be returning nor will I recommend this restaurant...there are so many great restaurants in Atlanta that offer top notch service and better food for the money!!!! Cons: service, not worth the money more

Restaurant Eugene - 1st experience 9/6/2008

Celebrated anniversary here tonight....my first time at the restaurant. The ambiance & decor was sleek, modern & upscale. Greeted warmly upon entrance & taken immediately to table (had reservation). Server clearly made an effort to give us our space given our anniversary, but still kept a watchful eye to fill our wine & water glasses. Started with the seared scallops as an appetizer, which was the highlight of the night for me.....perfectly cooked - tender, moist & very flavorful. Ceaser salad was next with unique presentation. Too much dressing for my taste while the wife complained about the ""fishy"" flavor, likely resulting from sardines in the dressing. Fried sardines were part of the presentation, which had a great effect despite my lack of interest in eating them. Main course was a ribeye with potatoes au gratin (with some grilled onions, red & orange peppers) topped with a mustard sause. Very flavorful dish with variety of color. If steak is your thing though: i recommend going to a steakhouse. While not a grandslam, this was a very good steak with excellent presentation & flavor. The wife had the swordfish, which was excellent. Perfectly cooked (very tender & juicy) with a lot of flavor. Desert followed with a peach cobbler with a buttermilk ice cream, which my wife enjoyed thoroughly. I had the chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet & sauce, which was very tasty as well. While I brought my own bottle of wine; the wine list appeared to be very good in diversity & quality. Nice price points for all budgets. Main dissapointement was getting charged a corkage fee despite pouring my wine (a 100 Parker rated wine - selling for $387/bottle on their wine list-surprisingly) for the server to taste. But, the server also gave us complementary cookies to go, which we'll give to our boys tomorrow! All-in-all, a very nice place to enjoy an evening! more

I really enjoyed this place 8/21/2008

This is what I heard......food not so hot, everybody over 80. This is what I found...a very nice upscale fine dining experience. Not sure how that age thingy came about......the people in my section were in their 30's. Food not so hot?? Found just the opposite. The food was delicious. Everything tasted fresh and competently prepared. I had gazpacho with shrimp starter, red snapper main and chocolate tart dessert. I enjoyed them all and I?m not a person who usually orders fish at restaurants. The service was excellent without hovering. The courses were served at the same time to the entire table which is the right way to do it although at Bacchanalia it was very notably not the case and for only a party of 3. As I was leaving I looked around a bit and saw a small intimate bar that looked like a great place to perch before dinner. One item of note?.a few tables around us appeared to be doing the tasting menu. We always try to take advantage of that and the matching wine course but couldn?t last night. Anywho, the strangest thing?all the wine glasses were on the table for the entire meal?..OK, I get that, but then?..all the wines were poured at the beginning of the meal. That was the first time I every saw that and I've slugged my way through many a tasting menu. While it looks very pretty and some of the wines can indeed benefit from being poured early it sure is one accident waiting to happen since some of the tables were not huge. I saw it as a nice short-cut for the wait staff. A whole lot less work to do it that way. Hmmmm?sure doesn?t stop me from wanting to go back, however, and try out that tasting menu. Bottom line?..an elegant yet comfortable dining experience. Oh yeah?.one thing I found to be a deficit. The mains consisted of 4 seafood dishes, squab, vegetable plate and red meat. That was it. All looked wonderful but I would have enjoyed a little more variety. If you don?t eat fish, last night your choices were pretty limited. Pros: Very comfortable fine dining experience Cons: None really more

Did not meet expectations 6/17/2008

I was somewhat disappointed with this restaurant. After hearing such wonderful words about the food and service, to be honest, there was nothing exceptional about either. I had the salmon. The preparation was not anything special. Our wait staff was not very attentive as one would expect from a restaurant in this price catagory. My expectations were not met at Restaurant Eugene's. I am very sorry to say this. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Extraordinarily small portions more

Great Sunday night value 2/17/2008

We went for the Sunday night pre fixe menu for $30 per person. The first course was so so. We had the salad and fried chicken livers. Second course was outstanding. We had the fried chicken with collard greens and amazing sweet potatoes and the pork chop with amazing grits. The dessert was a fried apple pie. Mostly it just tasted like a funnel cake and had the calories to match. No point in making a great dessert if you are just going to fry it in heavy batter. Coffee was amazing. They gave us each our own french press with delicious thick black coffee. Atmosphere is nice without being overly trendy. Recommended for the value on Sunday night, overwise would have been too pricey for what you get. more

All around, pretty good 11/18/2007

My wife and I visited Restaurant Eugene for her birthday on Sunday to try the Sunday Suppers. I think the Sunday supper special is a great deal. I had a Broccoli Soup, which was great and my wife had the mixed green salad, which she said needed more acid. I had the Country Fried Steak, which was a good, classic rendition. My wife had the Fried Chicken which she liked, but the sides she thought were absolutely AMAZING! Then the dessert. We had poached pears with a profiterole. The profiteroles tasted as if it was frozen and came from Wal-Mart. The pear though was fantasically cooked. All told, we enjoyed our experience, and would recommend it for a special occasion for sure. Pros: Good Food Cons: A bit expensive, dessert not so good more

this place is a treat 9/29/2007

Restaurant Eugene was a treat all around. The food is phenomenal (and I tried over half of the items on the menu.) Some of the portions were small for the price, but well worth it! The modest space makes for a very cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The decor is very simple but elegant. This place would make a great date spot, as it is quiet. The server was very knowledgeable of both the food and wine. I will surely return. Pros: service, food quality Cons: a bit expensive more

Total dining experience 6/18/2007

On the road for business, it can be awkward enjoying fine dining alone. Not so with the kitchen and waitstaff at this very impressive location. The physical layout and personable staff (including chef himself) and loyal regulars make Restaurant Eugene feel very family-oriented. The food was clearly prepared from the freshest of ingredients and the most creative culinary talent. Although presented in a friendly and non-pretentious manner, make no mistake that Restaurant Eugene is fine dining and priced accordingly. That said, I would still pay twice the going rate for those B.L.T. scallops! I would recommend ordering a tasting menu - have chef Hopkins prepare your own personal Iron Chef style sampling of his (and his staff's) talent! Pros: Fresh and innovative; spot-on service Cons: No locations in my home town more

Slice of Heaven! 12/25/2006

As stated previously, who knew that such a wonderful scene could exist right off of Peachtree Street. From the valet to the waiter everyone was very polite. Quite, intimate, and romantic, are a fiew choice words I have for this place. After my girlfriend and I finished dinner we were very happy and relaxed. The waiter, Marty, was very knowlegable and polite. The head chef was chosen over many other top chefs, in the Atlanta area, to compete on the Iron Chef television show, and boy does it show. The ribeye was crisp and char-grilled on the oustide while being medium-rare on the inside, very juicy and full of flavor. The potatoes and baby spinach that accomapanied the dish were equally amazing. My girlfriend's veal was cooked to perfection. The place was neither crowded nor loud. Do not come casually dressed. The desserts were exceptional, the toffee pudding is recommended. If anyone leaves this place not impressed please let me know because I had a wonderful time. Realize also that Americans have become used to receiving all of their food at once. Take your time and dine at this restaurant! Pros: Food, service, ambience, service, and everything else Cons: You have to be a real stiff not to enjoy this place more

Small, Intimate & Just New American Cuisine! FineClassy Bar! 10/4/2006

Being a resident of Buckhead, with so many big fancy chains, see & be seen scenes, this is a great find and break. Located on the bottom of the Aramore, near Peactree Battle, Restaurant Eugene, is the perfect convienent, getaway. Small, intimate, with just the right touch of class. The cozy bar is the perfect place to start. All the old standard coctails, are served with a New American touch. And owner/chef, Linton Hopkins and his charming wife, deliver New American(Hip Southern) cuisine. The menu changes weekly, depending on what Hopkins, finds at the market. You will not go wrong, especially on Sunday nights, with the pre-fixed 29.00 menu. Sunday nights, we just sit in the bar area, and dine. Wonderful versions of classic martini's and cocktails, try one you've never had. Service is excellent, the food preparations are creative, and we can relax, from the previous nights of high-profile dining. What a way to finish the weekend, and start the week. Five stars, all the way. Pros: Wonderful New American Menu! Classic Martini's & Cocktails!, Small & Intimate! Cons: None! Are You Kidding! more

Incredible Food, Great Attitude 4/10/2006

Finally a restaurant in ATL that has both excellent food and a laid back (but professional) attitude. The dining room is elegant but also warm and friendly. The servers really seem to enjoy their job and are knowledgeable about the food. On the night we went, spring pea puree soup and sable fish wrapped in prosciutto were spectacular. The menu changes with the seasons, so just order what looks good, you'll be very satisfied. The wine list is very impressive, especially the 1/2 bottle selection. This is definitely one of the top 3 restaurants in ATL. Pros: Seasonal Menu, Wine List, Service Cons: Location more

Exceptional 12/12/2004

This restaurant exceeded all of my expectations. The veal ravioli was superb and every dessert our table tried was fantastic. The half bottle wine selection suited all of our groups needs. I am glad to see a restaurant open in Atlanta that is not part of the sushi/tapas/martini movement but has actually brought grace and civility back to the city. Hats off to a wonderful restaurant. Pros: Flavors, Wine List, Service more

What A Find! 11/17/2004

Transplants from San Francisco, my wife and I are used to exceptional dining. After some very good experiences elsewhere, we agree: Restaurant Eugene is our top-notch choice in this city! Stunning decor, inventive food using quality ingredients and service that blew us away. Unbelievable wine list. When I questioned our server about wine, I got knowledgeable and intelligent responses to all of my questions. Great Pinot selection. We're hurrying back. Pros: Service, Food, Decor more

Beautiful 11/15/2004

decor, but too pricey for quality of food. I paid $29.00 for four small scallops. The fois gras was excellent, my soup was tepid, food was good enough, but nothing exceptional. Very small and romantic, waiter sucked up to my boyfriend all night thinking he was picking up the check. WRONG. Oh, the music was fabulous - old jazz classics. Pros: atmosphere, music more

Understated Elegance 11/10/2004

One of the most elegant, civilized places to dine in Atlanta. The service is gracious and unobtrusive, the New American cuisine refined, the wine list interesting, and the candle-lit room intimate to say the least. In short, it is one of the most romantic and sophisticated restaurants in the city. Pros: Romantic, Great Service, Good Parking more

SHHHH 4/26/2004

Restaurant eugene is the place to be seen by the whos who of Atlanta. Nestled inside of the Aramore Condos on Peachtree it is hard to believe that you are sitting on peachtree street, the decor and the ambiance are simplistic and stylish, and there is no outside noise ever to distract you from your wonderful meal prepared by Chef Linton Hopkins. The food and service is something Atlanta hasnt seen in a long time. Dont tell anyone, this is a place we want to keep a secret. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: , none, none more
