FAMILY VET FOR HALF A CENTURY 8/29/2011

We have been taking our pets to Dr. Patterson's office for nearly 50 years. My parents started taking our animals to Dr. Patterson when I was young and I'm 58 now. All of our family uses Patterson's for our veterinary services and we are multiple pets families.\r Patterson's will refer you to MSU if they are not able to do what your pet needs, such as an ultrasound for my dogs shoulder, or a cardiologist for my sister's cat. Anyone that thinks that Patterson's is parochial about their patients hasn't become very familiar with the vets there. They are patient, helpful, and caring and knowledgable about many different animals. I've even taken a goat to them. I would recommend Patterson's to anyone, and have to many.\r \r By the way, for those who think the hours are wierd, Patterson's office is essentially open all day M-W, 10 until 8. They stop taking patients in at noon and 3 to catch up because it's a first come, first serve office. They are also open 10 til 3 on Fridays with a lunch break 12-1, and open Thursday and Saturday mornings. That doesn't sound wierd to me. It sounds like they are trying to provide the best care for the most people for a reasonable cost as opposed to most vets that charge outrageously, by appointment so they can get one patient to cover most of their expenses. more

Patterson's was very helpful & very professional 8/6/2010

We became owners of a puppy who as all pups are is very adventurous. One morning when I let her out, I turned my back for a moment and Abby had run out into the street. She got hit by a pick-up truck and she was able to crawl back to our yard. I called around a couple of places and finally decided to try Patterson's after hearing about them for years. As soon as we got there, they put us in a room away from the other animals to keep Abby calm. Dr. Gill did his initial assessment to make sure it wasn't life-threatening and then attended other patients. We waited for a very long time (2 hours) but I still say it was worth it. They had to put her to sleep to take an x-ray and told us she had a broken hip. We could spend the next few years worth of Christmas money to have surgery or we could try immobilization. We tried immobilization for about 2 months and Abby recovered. We took her back in for a follow-up x-ray and had to immobilize her a little longer. Abby hasn't been back in yet to find out if she is all the way healed but she has been her active self. I am so thankful that the total cost was about $140 and that they were available when we needed them. \r \r When I noticed that Abby still appeared to be in pain after getting her home, I called and talked to Dr. Patterson to see if I could up her pain meds. He asked what she was taking, I told him, and he said yes. It was nice to be able to talk to the vet and not have to be placed on hold while the receptionist asked the vet. \r \r If you take your pet in, be prepared to wait with several other pets and owners and be aware that not all animals can be sociable. I have to take another dog in and also take Abby in to get spayed/neutered and am looking forward to another positive experience with Patterson. more

Pattersons Vet Clinic 7/2/2010

My family has taken their dogs to Patterson's for years. They have always been friendly and accommodating. \r That being said, we never had to treat any serious ailments or had to get any type of surgery for one of our pets. \r \r I took one of my own dogs in because of a small lump that developed on his chest. I did not receive any real diagnosis of the lump, but a vet eyed it up and said it might be an infected hair follicle. A few months later the mass had increased in size and on a second visit it was diagnosed as a tumor. I scheduled surgery through Patterson's immediately.\r \r I went to pick my dog up after surgery, where he had been recovering for around 6 hours or so after waking up from anesthesia. The first thing I noticed was that he was still incredibly unaware, clumsy, and lethargic as if he had received way too much sedative. The other thing was that his incision looked as if it had been stitched by a 10 year old using some hefty thick rope. It looked like someone performed an emergency field surgery, not a professional operation inside of a clinic.\r \r Two days later half the stitched busted open, leaving my dog with a large gaping wound which appeared infected. I took him back in to get looked at and I was told that sometimes stitches wont hold and that I should let it air out, then I was sent home. This was a friday and by saturday all the stitches were out and the whole wound was open and infected. I rushed my dog to Waverly Veterinary Hospital and the Vet there was amazing, very professional and she took my dog in right away for emergency surgery (which she did herself) she called me multiple times to update me on his progress and ask me questions. I picked him up a couple hours after he woke from surgery and he was alert and ready to go. His wound was stitched so well that you couldnt even see that he had an operation, you could only see his shaved fur. \r \r It is a long story but that experience has told me that Patterson's is a fine place to take your dog in for its routine shots and immunizations, or for a condition that is very minor. But if there is absolutely anything serious wrong with your animal, or if your animal is suffering from a condition that is at all mysterious, its best that you take it to a professional animal hospital.\r \r You get what you pay for. Pros: Price for routine shots Cons: Treatment for anything serious. more

patterson's:not bad, and not brilliant either 4/21/2010

Patterson's vet is a great vet to go to for routine things. Shots and spays/neuters, heartworm medication and worming. The cost is really almost nothing compared to other vets, and the staff is friendly and obviously loves animals very much. However, the waits are long. Long long. There are no appointments, and people are attracted by the cost- Patterson's is popular. The hours of operation are also weird, it's best to call ahead before you need to go to make sure they'll be open. If in doubt, every weekday they are open 10:00am-12:00noon. Anything else is kind of a crap shoot and varies from day to day. Don't go on a Monday morning unless you're okay with waiting two hours. They aren't open on the weekends, so everybody comes in at once. Also, don't expect to get called in the order you arrived. Emergencies go ahead of you, as do things like post-spay/neuter check-ups. Don't complain. Everybody in there has had to wait while other people cut ahead of them. And if your pet is seriously ill, if something is wrong that isn't simple- you should probably go somewhere else. I'm not saying Patterson's is bad, but this is a little country practice. X-rays are only a hundred dollars a pop- but there is no ultrasound machine, and they are going to give you the simplest, cheapest solution first. They aren't diagnosticians, they aren't up on the latest in veterinary medicine. But they will charge you a pittance for shots and medication, and remember your name and ask about your kids at home. They are very nice, and they do what they do for as close to free as any vet I've ever seen. Pros: low cost, friendly staff Cons: low cost, long waits more

To Airiana2 4/18/2010

To Ariana I am not the competition\r \r Dr. Patterson is great his staff is questionable at best, he has several people at his counter that should NEVER have a job dealing with the public they are rude and unqualified to to any job!\r The staff was much better before the unfortunate loss of Mrs. Patterson she was fantastic.\r Dr. Patterson fills a void that no other vet in the area can or will. He supplies a low cost and reasonable service so those who normally wouldn't take proper care of their animals can afford the expense. Pros: Price Cons: Staff and Clientele more

Misdiagnosed!!!! 4/3/2010

I went to Dr Patterson office and saw Dr Gill...my dog had a fever of 105.7...I had them do blood test...he said my dog had bacteria infection and treated him for that gave him 2 shots, and 2 different meds...went back couple days later, he gave me another med to give my dog...my dog still had the 105 temp, went back again another few days later, my dog still had temp of 105, did xray and was told bacteria infection and peritontis. Gave him another few shots and more stronger pills. A week later, my dog still having 105 temp I went to patterson office, got all the records and went to MSU Vet hospital. Within the first 5 minutes, using only the information from Patterson's office, they instantly said that my dog had a severe liver disease/possible cancer. 2 days later my dog had passed. i was told that antibiotics can make liver disease worse. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THEM AGAIN. THEY HAD ALL THE INFORMATION RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM AND THEY DID NOTHING, BUT TAKE MY MONEY AND LET MY DOG GET SICKER AND SICKER. I am not a vet I trusted them, but never again!!!! Pros: NONE!!!!!!!! Cons: EVERYTHING more

I love Patternson's 9/30/2009

MSU Vet estimated cost of stomach surgery on large dog: $1975 Dr. Patterson's total cost: $510 with free boarding for a week to observe Pros: Cheap, extremely helpful, and they actually care Cons: Long wait but worth it more

Luv this place!! 2/24/2009

The best prices around, loving, friendly, and aren't afraid to give advice over the phone...UNLIKE other offices which are pining for an office call in their pocket every time. Always calls promptly when after hour messages left on their machine. The wait can be long. But has always been worth it. I recently moved 65 miles away and still make the trip with both my dogs. I do this because of service AND prices. I hope they never change the way they do business. No complaints and lots of referrals from my standpoint. You can't go wrong** Pros: Good people, great prices** Cons: Long waits, cuz they're just that good!! more

Patterson Veterinary Clinic - 12/26/2008

First I would like to say, I wouldn't listen to a review from anybody, knowing that the person giving the review is the competition. \r Of course the review will be negative, it's from the competition!\r So here is my review, based on my personal experiences with Dr. Patterson & his staff...\r I would not take ANY of my animals to anybody other than Patterson Veterinary Clinic.\r I have been taking my pets to Dr. Patterson for years, and my animals and myself, are treated absolutely wonderful every time we are there. \r And, 2 of our pets are still with us today, because of Dr. Patterson.\r The staff has NEVER been anything but polite to my entire family and all of our pets.\r We have NEVER been overcharged.\r My pets have NEVER been misdiagnosed.\r My pets have NEVER had unnescessary testing done to them.\r We have NEVER been rushed. Every vet in the building will spend as much time as needed/required with your pet and you.\r We have NEVER left Dr. Patterson's office feeling confused or boggled. Because he makes sure all of your questions are answered, and that you completely understand the current situation before you leave his office.\r Dr. Patterson's prices are way beyond affordable and reasonable. \r He has waived office fee's for us many times if we had something else to pay for, such as a prescription, etc..\r Dr. Patterson's staff will send you email reminders if it's nearing time for vaccinations, or surgeries. Which is very helpful, especially if you work alot or have other things going on, like I do.\r Hours vary, but the evening hours are great if you work days.\r Yes Dr. Patterson's office is a ""first come first serve"" set-up, and yes, emergencies will get handled first. Just like at a hospital emergency room.\r Sometimes the wait can be lengthly, but I would rather wait patiently then to take my animals to another vet.\r I would recommend Dr. Patterson to ANYBODY looking for a good veterinarian. \r You will be very satisfied at the service you & your pets recieve. Cons: The wait can get lengthly. more

I have been taking my dog to this office for just over five years now. She's seen three different vets there. All of them were good. My dogs had vaccinations, teeth cleaning/extractions, a growth removed, evaluation of torn ligaments and surgery referral through this office. The way this vet works is a first come first serve basis - kind of like a redi-care for animals. You can request a specific vetrinarian or see the first available. I generally see Dr Di'Silva because my dog does better with women. The prices are very reasonable- probably the best that you are going to find. Office hours vary so make sure you call before you go there. Many days 8-10am 1-3pm and 6-8pm but some days are different. When I move, I will miss going to this office\r \r Pros: Competent Vets and unbeatable prices Cons: Can be a long wait more

Dr. Gill gives unnecessary repeat vaccinations while my dog wears tags to show updated vaccinations 11/19/2008

My complaint is is specifically towards an incident involving Dr. Gill. I have 0 complaints against Dr. Patterson. \r \r My 16 year old daughter panicked when the groomers explained that they found cysts on our pomeranian (Jazzy's) stomach and they suggested she go immediately to the vet to have them checked as they could be cancerous. She drove Jazzy to have her cysts checked out. While she was there--Dr. Gill noticed after taking a minute to review her charts that her shots had not been updated (according to their records). What he didn't realize is that 2 months prior I took advantage of the FREE shots being offered through Ing County Animal Shelter. So, unfortunately, just because he didn't see that we had received shots through their office...he took it upon himself to repeat the shots Jazzy had received just weeks before AND WAS WEARING the tags AROUND HER COLLAR to show it. My daughter wasn't aware that Jazzy had been vaccinated either--she'd been in camp all summer. The bottom line is there was NO intention of taking Jazzy there--other than to have those cysts examined. They turned out to be hormonal cysts-so nothing more was done as far as treatment for the cysts. \r \r Later, I received the bill...but when I called to ask him to remove the unnecessary charges he said ""We don't have time to look at 200 tags a day to see if they've been vaccinated"" (yet he ""had the time"" to look at her charts and determine otherwise) and ""the meds are already in the dog..the money comes out of my pocket"" so I can't offer credit or write off those charges. Needless to say, I get to eat the cost at his mistake. If only he had taken a moment to notice the blinding colored updated tags when my 16 year old said ""I don't know if she's up to date on her vaccinations..I just brought her to get her cysts looked at"". more

Have gone for every animal my family has had for the past 20+ years. 9/30/2008

I wouldn't hesitate to take any animal to the clinic. There is a reason that the wait is a little long, they're worth the wait. My wife works at MSU in animal health and even there a lot of people take there pets to Patterson's. I know a lot of people that drive over an hour or more for the excellent service provided. They also show great compassion when it comes to the death of a pet. They move you to the front of the line and they even have property in northern Michigan where they spread the ashes for you. I even received a card in the mail signed by the staff.\r \r \r Pros: Professional, Service, People, Location, Compassion, Price. Cons: Sometimes the waits are long, but like I say it's well worth it. more

Best Place to take your loved ones 7/11/2008

Patterson's is the very best! As shown in the past reviews, only one negative one and that came from a competitor. Thank God I have not taken my pets to their place. What kind of person leaves a negative review for the competitor? A desperate one. How sad. Pros: Caring, gentle, experienced and inexpensive Cons: walk in can be quite a wait more

Well, your reviews have won me over - updated 7/7/2008

I have made it to Patterson's, and am happy to say my cat is on the way to becoming healthy again. Dr. Patterson himself came out and asked me everything he needed to know while I was filling out paperwork, instead of having a secretary write down what was wrong. The whole visit was only $66, including the office visit, medication, and a colon test on my kitty. Impressive! Dr. Gills was my doctor, and he was fantastic and covered every question I had. \r \r Well, I have to say, all of your posts have been wonderful to read, and I have decided to try out Dr. Patterson because they have won me over. I will be heading there tomorrow morning, first thing, to get in line. I did want to say, however, that I have called the office twice this morning and spoke to 2 different people, and neither of them has been very friendly on the phone, in fact kind of short. (I am taking this to be the fact that there are 25 people in the office right now waiting, i was told). HOwever, it will not affect my overwhelming desire to go there, based on all of your wonderful posts. I will repost after my visit! thanks all! Pros: Dr. Patterson himself came out and asked me questions about my cat Cons: When I called the Office Staff was not friendly more

Patterson Vet Clinic 6/20/2008

I can't express how wonderful the Patterson Vet Clinic is. They love your pets and make it affordable to take care of your pets when times are hard. M y dog went to a vet clinic in holt and they charged about three times as much and was not as good. My dog hates to have her nails done and the vet in holt would refuse to do her nails unless she was put to sleep each time at about 75.00 every time she needed them done.\r I started taking her to Patterson's and for 10.00 a visit we get them done and I can tell the girls really care for her and they got her personality down.I don't have to go through putting her to sleep each time and the bad effects on her body by doing this. When you walk into the Patterson Vet Clinic it feels like family with one mission and that is to take care of our pets with love and compassion! I would never take my dog anywhere else and I hope more people learn about this clinic because they truley do care about your pets and they do what they do, because they care about your animals and not how much profit they get. Pros: They do what they do not for a profit but the love for your animals. Cons: Sometimes the wait is hard.because it is a walk in. more

Drive 2 hours 6/18/2008

I still use Dr. Pattersons for all my vet use. I moved to Coleman MI from Holt MI. I drive almost 2 hours to get to Dr. Pattersons office. I looked around at the vets around home and did not like them or the high prices they charge to just walk into their door, $20.00 and more with out even looking at my pet. I wish there were more Dr. Patterson in this world. Pros: they remermber your pet name just by looking at them Cons: sometimes long wait. more

11 year and still going to Dr. P. 1/8/2008

I am sure at one time or another there is bound to be disgruntled clients. Dr. Patterson is older (so am I) and if he is not taking continuing education classes then he should. But this does not detract from the excellent service he and his extended staff gives. They are compassionate and have always been there for me and my pets when other Vets have not, this includes the Holt Vet Clinic. If you are dissatisfied with Dr. Patterson he has several highly qualified Veterinarians that are equally compassionate and helpful on his staff. I have been going to Dr. Patterson?s Veterinary Hospital for 11 years. All my children now go there and we have all been very pleased.\r Pros: Many Cons: You have to wait your turn, no appointments - I am ok with this and just work around it. more

BEST VET EVER 12/12/2007

My animals have been going to Patterson for almost 8 years. He is by far, the best vet we have ever seen. My dog started having weird head spasms a couple years ago, we took her to Patterson and one other vet. The other vet told us we could have a $6000 surgery to see if she had a brain tumor, other than that there was nothing we could do. Patterson, on the other hand, looked her over and gave her some medication, and she has been fine ever since. The other vet told us our dog wouldnt live past 10 years old. She is almost 15 now, and still doing great. Dr. Patterson is a God Send to the world of veterinary medicine. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Patterson Vet Clinic 12/1/2007

Like the last review, I also saw the scathing review of Dr. Patterson's clinic and signed up just so I could leave a review. Dr. Patterson is by far the best vet I have known in my 48 years. He, as well as his colleagues, are caring and knowledgeable which is a far cry from many places I have been. My cat had a\r problem with excessive licking of fur . I took him to several vets that did not know what was going on and wasted $300 in the process. Then I went to the Ailurophile Cat Clinic in Frandor who said my cat should be on steroids and that would clear up the problem. That all cost $165 and it still did not help. I did take him back there (my mistake) and was told ""Oh he probably has fleas we can't see"" so I spent $40 buying meds for that. Something didn't seem right about that. Then I was talking with a co-worker who told me to take my cat to Patterson's clinic. I took him there and was immediately told he didn't have fleas and he didn't need steroids. My cat was diagnosed with a skin allergy and given a $9 shot. He didn't have any problem after that. I spent $505 at other places and my cat got no help/no relief. I went to Patterson's clinic and only spent $9 and actually got people who cared about what was going on with my cat. The vet at Ailurophile cat clinic referred to me as a hysterical owner who was overly concerned. Dr. Patterson and his staff cared about my concerns, and most importantly, cared about the comfort and well being of my cat. He and his colleagues are the best. If you want to go to a place that loves your pets as much as you do, then Dr. Patterson's clinic is the place for you. Pros: Caring staff, very reasonable prices Cons: not one more
