So its the day before my 10th anniversary and I have forgotten to make reservations for my wife and I to celebrate. My friend reccomended Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills so I called and made reservations. Upon arrival I was greeted by an enthusiastic staff at the front door. The server was professional and informative of the evenings specials and displayed great passion for her job. We took her advice and ordered the 18oz Bone in Filet, lobster mash potatoes, and Black Truffle Crab Gnocchi. We were greeted by a manager that showed great concern of our dining experience and stopped by our table twice! I have to tell you this was the best dining experience we have ever had. The staff, the food and ambiance was impecible. I will recommend Mastro's to all my friends and look forward to our next visit. Pros: great food, great service, professionalism more

A New Yorker who travels, I've had the experience of eating steak in all four corners of the US. I've loved steaks in NYC, Boston, Vegas, Chicago, D.C., Texas, and even Minnesota. Having lived in LA for 6 years, two things were missing: great pizza and great steakhouses... now only 1 is missing. Mastro rocks. Go upstairs and kick it hard, old school, and bloody! Worst Experience/Food/Service-Will Never Go Back 11/23/2005

An overpriced so-called Steakhouse, with one of the worst services and foods that we have ever seen. My brother who is a very regular drinker of Dewars scotch, immediately noticed his drink wasnt Dewars (probably some cheaper scotch). After notifying the waiter, his drink was replaced, but again wasnt Dewars (he let it go this time). Our Caesar salad was probably the worst any of us had ever seen, with old lettuce, and served in a WARM plate! Four ordered a steak and 3 of them (ordered medium-well), came fully cooked (even beyond well-done!). Didnt finish our meals and were pretty disgusted with the food. After telling the manager about our complete dissatisfaction, apologized and brought back a shot of Dewars!!! (incredibly cheap). Spending $600 for 5, I can say it was the worst experience we have ever had at any restaurant. We will never go back. Stay away. Pros: None Cons: Bad Food, Poor Service, Poor Value more

Disneyland meets Chuckee Cheese steakhouse 11/12/2005

This Mastro's didn't come close in all three visits. Here's why: 1) The food, admittedly, is great...but 2) servers cannot remember who ordered what. 3) servers are aloof 4) the managers may as well be parking the cars because the only thing I notice any of the three I've seen roaming around do, is talking loudly thru their secret service-like walkie talkies. 5) New rule: I think I'd like to avoid eating at establishments with walkie talkies. 6) The matre'd had us wait 10 minutes to sit while only a sparce few tables were filled each time. 7) And let me not forget, why is the valet $7 bucks. I think they've caught on that idiots will pay whatever they put on the sign so long as they are riding on their earlier reputation from when this tired establishment first opened. 8) way too aloof for the price Pros: Great food, really great food, really really good Cons: rip-off, wannabe crowd, aloof service more

CREME DE LA CREME OF STEAKHOUSES 11/10/2005

I have only eaten at the Mastros in Beverly Hills, and I can't wait for the opening of the Costa Mesa location. This is by far a much better choice than Ruth's Chris or Lawry's. I recommend the bone in filet and the mastros mashed potatoes....must follow with creme brulee and of course their wine selection is great too! more

Good But Not Great Food Expensive 10/20/2005

More expensive than Spago, plan on $100-$150 per person. I spent $80 for entree and $10 bottle of water that I poured myself. Ordered a well done steak the middle was rare, unbelievable. I ordered the potatoes au gratin $12 I got a pan of very thick cut potatos that tasted dried out burned with not enough cheese, disgusting. The waitress was friendly, prompt but she hovered too much. I told her I was a slow eater, a lie, to get her away from me. It was like she was watching me I started to feel self-concious. The ambiance was amazing, exactly the picture of a high class restaurant. Definitely go to the upstairs dining room the downstairs is not as good. The crowd is dressed up. If they make a mistake on the food, you should request a change, I just didn't want to bother with it. Pros: Fantastic ambiance, good food, great breads Cons: hovering service, very expensive, food mistakes more

Whenever I go here, I can't help insisting that mine is the best steak I've ever had. And even their double cut pork chop is the best of its kind. The plates are so hot that they sizzle when you put the vegetables on it. The "special" lobster over mashed potatoes is a real treat. Gigantic servings--I've never even had an appetizer--but for dessert, the tangy key lime pie and huge strawberry shortcake hit the spot. Attentive, yet unobstrusive service. Classic cocktails. more
