Great atmosphere and classes 12/26/2008

This is the yoga studio you go to if you just want to practice yoga, period. A very healthy, non-competitive atmosphere and reasonable prices, particularly if you can go during the day. Pros: Daytime classes are inexpensive, truly dedicated to yoga more

Liberation Yoga is an absolute winner!!!!! 3/19/2008

Liberation Yoga is a welcome oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city and a true neighborhood spot. The main practice room has a beautiful and durable, yet ""giving"" floor, (trust me..I don't use a mat) and the garden room is delightfully unique. As a yoga practitioner for almost 20 years I have tried many different studios and I absolutely continue to favor Liberation Yoga. I particularly love the care and full commitment that Christine and Gary have made to the studio and the practice of yoga. This dedication comes through immediately as you step through the door. It has become a rarity in the current world of chain owned yoga studios. Teachers are fantastic.. I hope it's O.K. to say my very favorite is Lynn Taylor. My one wish: wish I had time to take more classes. LIBERATION YOGA is an absolute winner... Namaste Pros: Owned and operated by yoga teachers and scholars; excellent teachers;nice ambience Cons: Plan a few minutes to find parking..after all this is the city! more

Liberation Yoga will Embrace You with Peace and Grace 3/19/2008

This studio isn't just about ""taking yoga"", it's about living your life with more grace and peace. The variety of classes will appeal to any level or style of yoga, from restorative, to beginner, to level 3 advanced... ashtanga, iyengar, hatha or a mix of various methods. The owners, Christine and Gary, go out of their way to welcome new students, they encourage yogis to interact with each other and become a ""community"". This is the only studio I've ever been to, where, upon entering a class that's full and already started, students, teachers, and often Christine or Gary will happily greet a new yogi and move some mats to make room. No need to feel intimidated here, you will be embraced. Pros: Garden Studio, Candlelight Yoga, Warm and Welcoming Cons: NONE! more

Best Yoga in LA 3/19/2008

Wonderful teachers, lovely studio, great array of classes. Best yoga experience I have had in Los Angeles! The owners, Christine and Gary, are awesome - warm and welcoming. Pros: Class Variety, teachers, atmosphere, great store Cons: sometimes parking more

Great yoga! 6/20/2007

This studio is truly a gem in Los Angeles. Friendly, experienced teachers and great classes for all levels. Perfect environment to learn yoga and continue your practice. Pros: Great teachers, lots of classes in the evening, affordable more

Great Place To Visit But You'll Want To Live There!! 5/24/2007

If you're a yoga pro you can probably go to any yoga studio and do what you need to do. For the rest of us a place like Liberation Yoga is really a gift. Very welcoming with lots of knowledge, different options for classes, friendly but not oppressive. Just a very good vibe and a very easy place to be. more

Yoga fun, not silly. 5/23/2007

This place has a great atmosphere for yoga. The instructors are thorough and approachable. This felt like real yoga, where the technique was as important as the exercise. I went to one yoga class somewhere else that seemed like an aerobics class with the instructor constantly pushing us as if they were doing aerobics. That seems silly. Liberation Yoga is not silly. It was fun. more

Viva The Liberation 5/23/2007

Love this studio! The quality of classes, teachers and students amazes me, it?s a reflection of a truly devoted community of Yoginis. Their class schedule offers plenty of PM classes for 9-6'ers who can't make it to the earlier classes. Weekend classes are a most, great way to start the Saturday and feel alive! They offer a few different styles of yoga for those who want to try something new without feeling like an outsider. The seminars and workshops offered throughout the month are very beneficial to help deepen your practice. Pros: Quality teachers, Great boutique, Devoted student, Good location Cons: Yoga becomes an addiction more

THE BEST YOGA STUDIO IN L.A.!!! 5/23/2007

I had given up on Yoga when I wandered into Liberation Yoga a year ago. A handful of cold and unfriendly experiences at ""McYoga"" studios elsewhere had left a very bad taste in my mouth. But the moment I walked into Christine Burke and Gary McCleery's Urban Oasis, I knew I was home. The asana rooms are spacious and immaculate, the Garden Studio is amazing! Vines grow up the walls and it is absolutely awesome to practice yoga outside! One of the best things about the studio is the VARIETY of Yoga styles offered; there is truly a class for everyone- Vinyasa, Hatha, Iyengar, Anusara, Qi Gong, Family Yoga, Gentle, Pre/Post-natal.. and classes are specifically named Level 1, 2, or 3 so you don't accidentally wander into an Advanced Class! There is a great little General Store in the front that always has the hippest yoga clothes, mats, props, mat bags.. as well as books, CDs, DVDs, beauty products, jewelry.. I could basically stay and shop all day. The very best thing about Liberation Yoga is Christine Burke's classes. She teaches with such love and grace, style and panache! The classes are always challenging and insightful. Your first class is free, so go! And you will know what I mean. Pros: Spacious Studios, Great Teachers, Super Affordable Cons: NONE!! more

Best Yoga Experience! 5/23/2007

As a mother of an 8 yr old and a 4 yr old, finding healthy, safe, and educational family experiences we can all enjoy is always a challenge. Liberation yoga not only met that challenge, but took it to a whole 'nother level! Their family yoga classes on Sundays are THE BEST! Wether you're an old pro, or a beginner, the class is fun, challenging, and leaves you feeling fantastic. My son swears he grows an inch after each class! I recommend this studio strongly, for their friendly, helpful staff, great class options, and wonderful studios. It's also a great way to meet others that share your interests, no matter what background. Overall, a wonderful place in such a big city! Pros: Double thumbs up for staff, price, class options, and studio design Cons: Not close enough to my house! more

All you need is Liberation 5/22/2007

I used to do yoga at the Larchmont yoga studio, and never really knew whether I liked it or not -- until I took a class taught by Christine Burke. That was the day I fell in love with yoga. When I found out she had opened her own studio, Liberation Yoga, I left Larchmont and never went back. Whereas the classes at Larchmont were large and impersonal, the classes at Liberation were intimate and spiritual. Now, as the popularity of Liberation has grown, the size of its classes has expanded as well. But it has kept its charm, personality, and sense of community. There's a reason people talk about Liberation Yoga with a religious passion. It has changed people's lives, including mine. Liberation is more than a yoga studio; it's my temple. more

Nice, normal people and conscientious teachers 5/22/2007

I love Liberation Yoga!!! Some yoga studios are full of super-snotty, ""spiritual"" students and teachers who behave like gurus - but not Liberation. Nice, normal people and conscientious teachers. The teachers are enthusiastic and the classes are well-planned and varied. I never feel pushed to do things that are above my level, but I always feel challenged to do my best. It is such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Pros: great teachers, great atmosphere, good space more

There's no better place for Yoga than the Garden 4/12/2007

I've taken 5 sessions here, with all different instructors. I've enjoyed all of them. I have a very fluctuating schedule which makes it hard for me to commit to one regular class. I've never felt out of place. Everyone here is really nice and they aren't stuck up or rude at all. The Tuesday and Thursday classes have been really packed for me, so you have to get there early if you want a good spot. They really pack you in, which is a little uncomfortable, but still these instructors are worth it. They are really good about giving discounts on the fees. Parking isn't great, but there is residential street parking, and I've never felt scared about walking to my car at night. If you haven't tried this place, try it. The first class is free. Pros: Friendly People, Garden Studio, Mats, Bricks, Pillows, and Blankets provided as needed, Cost is much better than other local places. Cons: Some classes are packed to the inch more

I never 'got' yoga until I found Liberation 2/21/2007

I cannot begin to descirbe this jewel on LaBrea. I never write reviews but feel compelled to share my love of this studio with everyone out there that has never really understood yoga. Christine is one of the most amazing women - her classes are always packed but that is because there is something unbelievably calming about her. I feel like a different person after each class and I can tell you, I've gone from 0 yoga to yoga 3 times a week and I am hooked. Liberation really feels like a supportive family, everyone is extremely friendly and the positive energy during practice and outside is really unparalleled. Pros: Wonderful instructors, great studios, extremely friendly Cons: Some classes are very full but that's a small price to pay! more

What Yoga Looks Like 2/16/2007

Liberation Yoga is my second home. I absolutely ADORE this place. This is what yoga should be---no competition, pretentiousness, and all about relaxation and wellness. The teachers are intensely caring and the owners are the most amazing individuals. I feel like a whole new person when I leave a class here. The best class is on Sunday nights with the co-owner Christine. It is in the garden---the garden is incredible by the way---and is a spiritual experience. If you're the kind of person who likes to leave your ""workout"" at the gym and really invigorate your mind, body and spirit---don't waste your time on any other studio in L.A. This is the real thing. Pros: Everything under the roof more

Testament For Liberation Yoga 1/28/2007

When I landed in LA a few years back, I had no idea where I was. There were so many days when this city felt utterly, totally foreign to me. I stumbled upon Liberation Yoga because my fear of cars meant that I was walking quite a bit back then. Oh City Search Friend! I must highly recommend the sudden sensation of returning home, when, completely lost, home felt so far away. I had finally returned to a place I?d never been. A breathe of fresh air, at the bottom of the sea. Pros: Everyone smiles there Cons: You never want to leave more

Heartwarming Staff, Fun, Mind-expanding Classes 12/21/2006

I only lived in Los Angeles for 8 months, but Liberation Yoga felt like home. I went there soon after I moved to LA on the recommendation of a friend. Christine knew my name after my first visit, and everyone seemed to make a special effort to make me feel welcome. This had nothing to do with me - they do this for everyone. The staff is warm, friendly and legitimately interested in the lives and health of their patrons. Pros: Great value, street parking and a small parking lot, excellent instructors, happy atmosphere more

The positive energy spills out onto La Brea... 12/18/2006

This studio is a true jewel. It is always brimming with supportive nurturing energy and smiling yogis and yoginis. It has two amazing studios, humble and passionate teachers and a beautiful art gallery. If you want a neverending supply of fabulous workshops, classes with purpose, intent and meaning and a community of supportive students, this is arguably the best find in the city. Gary and Christine are personable, they go the extra step with everything they do and that is what makes them such an important part of the community, the neighboorhood and Los Angeles. Pros: Everything is a pro Cons: There is no midnight class...yet ;) more
