We arrived early on a Sunday so we would not have a wait, which once opened we were seated immediately. That was the only good part. I waiter was less than enthusiastic and just...

Old Miami's Living Legend! Best Stone Crab Claws Anywhere, Period! 2/2/2007

I remember coming here with my parent's as a kid, when we lived in North Miami Beach. Fast forward into Atlanta, thirty years later, I never miss going to Joe's when I'm in the area. Nothing much has changed about this place, and that's one of the things I find most attractive about it. No South Beach Neon here, and there's not wrong with that, but Joe's is just a classic. We always start with that crazy chopped salad. It's now popular everywhere, but has always been a staple here. And what to order? The world's best Stone Crab Claws period. And that mustard sauce. Still a little pricy, but it's the best. My favorite Dirty Grey Martini, and the crab claws. Service is strickly old school, tuxes and all. Finish with one of the best Key Lime Pies, in South Florida. The legend lives on, one of my favorite places in the U.S. Note: Don't pay any attention to the complaining New Yorker reviews, they complain when the sun is out. LOL! Pros: Stone Crab Claws, Chopped Salad, & Great Old School Service! Cons: Pricey, But Well Worth It! more

Not Great Not Terrible 1/15/2007

I've been living down in Miami for about a year(from NYC)and have been meaning to get to Joes for a while now so friends came into town and figured it was as good a time as any -went last friday night after HH at Monty's, the wait was about 45 minutes but had drinks at the bar was which crowded but not obnoxiously so.the staff was all very attentive and the place seemed like a NY steakhouse with the staff in tuxes and want not. so the menu had a nice selection of seafood as well as meat entrees i got the large stone crabs since thats what the place is known for as well as a few sides(hash browns, fried asparagus. So the crabs were good although werent as exciting as i had hoped -they basically seemed like chilled steamed crabs i have made at home mustard sauce was fine too, again nothing to rave about but not bad, thisseemed to be the case with everything, the service and the sides -not bad but considering the hoopla i had heard about the place just didnt live up to expectations all around.I experienced it once but wouldnt really rush back, although wasnt as pricey as I expected again compared to NY. Pros: nice ambiance, interesting people watching Cons: can get crowded,no reservations, lots of greasing going on more

Best stone crab ever! 11/17/2006

My parents used to eat here many many years ago. My father took my brother and I here once when we stopped off in Miami on our way to the Carribean. While a trifle unfair to look back now and compare the seafood here to Grand Cayman, Joe's Stone Crab definitely stood out as some of the best we had. Their blackened spices are incredible. I'd love to go back. more

Always a wait, but worth it! 8/4/2006

In season, you'll wait, but the crabs and the mustard sauce are worth it. I would never miss Joe's on a trip to Miami. Never! more

Great Seafood 7/3/2006

We are from Texas and we wanted some great Seafood and we heard about Joes. Lucky for us we did our homework and knew to get there early. We were there for Sunday dinner and we arrived just before they opened so we only had about a 15 min wait only because they were 15 min before their scheduled opening time. Our waiter was named Moses and he took great care of us. Great Food, we will be back. more

NOT WORTH IT 4/3/2006

I read several reviews that said this was the place to go for stone crab. After waiting 2&1/2 hours to be seated, the waiter was rude and unattentive. He even argued with me that a lemon should go into my key lime martini instead of a lime. Good thing I had already had two others at their bar that were served with a key LIME and not a lemon. Other than that the crab was good, but expensive. I know you can get stone crab just as good and for alot less hassle in Miami. Pros: Decent Food Cons: Toristy, Long Wait, Expensive more

Definitely something to experience 7/28/2005

I came here for dinner and as expected the wait was quite long. The restaurant itself is just like a classic steakhouse but for crabs. The decor is very pleasant and the service attentive. The boiled potato side was pretty good, and the grilled tomato was outstanding. The crabs themselves were pretty good, though it still took work to get to the meat. It definitely seems better to get the larger claws. The key lime pie was very nice. Many of the items on the menu are not expensive at all, but the crabs can set you back a bit. Pros: Crabs Cons: Long wait more

Great Stone Crab 7/21/2005

Joe's Stone crab has the best stone crab i've tasted. The rest of there menu is just as good. They tend to be busy, plan ahead and make reservations. They have excellent food and amazing service. more

In Love with Stone Crabs 3/12/2004

Ok People read this carefully and learn. Joe's Stone Crab is one of the best restaurants in Miami Florida for a reason. The food is incredible, the service phenomenal, the wait time ridiculous but well worth it. Order the Stone Crabs and make sure they are the jumbos. Also get a side order of tomatoes with the spinach stuffing and melted cheddar cheese. The wine selection is very good and the atmospheres is great, be romantic and come as a couple or bring a crowd. Pros: Food, Service, Food Cons: , Expensive more

Sardine Can 1/19/2004

Food is good, although definitely NOT worth the 3 hour wait. After spending a small fortune on the bar bill still had to wait an additional hour standing in line to spend a large fortune. If you are fluent in sign language then you and your significant other will be able to communicate. Pros: Service Cons: CROWDED, Expensive, NO Reservations more

Go for the experience and Stone Crab 4/27/2003

This place is historic in the restaurant scene. It is loud and expansive; I would hate to guess how many square feet it is. This is a place for crowds and a long wait if you dont know the maitre d', (luckily for us we were with a known individual in the area that was able to walk right in with a party of twelve and get seated right away at 8PM on Sat.). For those that are waiting to be seated there is a large bar to sit back and enjoy a cocktail or two. The food is notable for their specialty, Stone Crab. I also tried the Sea Bass, Fried Calamari and a few veg. sides and was unimpressed. Pros: Stone Crab, Experience, service Cons: Crowds, wait, Some menu items more

Worst Experience Ever 4/2/2003

In order to stay under my word limit, I'll hit the highlights. The wait was outrageous, close to 3 hours. This was mainly due to the regulars coming in, being placed in front of the out of towners, because the regulars know to tip the host on their way out. We kept getting bumped down on the list and when we approached the manager, the answer basically was too bad. This is the way they do business. If you don't like it, leave. Pretentious, unfair, and soooooo not worth it. Cons: Long wait, Bad service, Rude staff more

NOT WORTH IT ... 3/31/2003

No reservations, so a 3 hour is likely. The wait is reserved for out-of-towners because tipping the maitre d' for a table is only permitted when leaving the restaurant. After complaining that this practice was unfair to out-of-towners who do not have a chance to move up the list, the manager essentially told me, ""Too bad. You can leave if you like because there are hundreds of other paying customers waiting in line."" The service was poor, and the attitudes of the maitre d', waiter, and manager were unbearable. The food and restaurant ambience were good, not outstanding. Joe's has been there a long time and is a place to tell people you have been to, but I, personally, will never go back to Joe's. If you go, only go during off hours. Otherwise, go to Monty's for equivalent food without the hassel. Pros: stone crab, ambience Cons: horrendous wait, poor service, poor attitude more

Joe's is too Cool!! 2/26/2003

Once you walk in to a room full of movers and shakers, you realize that Joe's is a restaurant that serves all walks of life. The food is the best, not just the crab either. The grilled tomatoes happen to be one of the best things that I tasted that month. The waiters make you feel as if you are the only table that they are servicing, and the bartenders can make anything you ask for. There is nothing that they have not heard of. I you live in Miami, and haven't been, you better go!!! Pros: great service, secluded location, upbeat atomosphere Cons: not a date place, close quarters more

Too Crabby!! 2/6/2003

Rude host, bad bartender, and a long wait. I went early, and was alone. The host told me it would be a 30 min wait, or I could eat at the bar. As I walked to the bar, I heard him tell the couple behind me it would be 10 min. Despite no crowd at the bar, it took me 15 minutes ( no, really ) to get a beer, and another 15 to place my order. The bartender was slow & clueless. I was given dirty silverware, and a dirty napkin, and my replacement set was just as bad. The waiter who finally brought my crabs, was pleasant, and attending. First time I had Stone Crabs, and really enjoyed them (mediums). It took about an hour from ordering to eating. By default, the other place Montys has just got to be better. Pros: Good Crabs Cons: Bad Service, Long wait, Pricey more

Take-It-Away 1/2/2003

My boyfriend and I felt a bit underdressed for the restaurant and stopped into Joe's Takeaway for lunch instead. The food was great. Get the crabcake sandwich or the grilled Mahi-Mahi. more

I got crabs! 12/14/2002

My wife and I, tourists that we are, got an order of the Large stone crabs (they've got Jumbo, Large, Select and Medium and, we were told, you get one pound of meat no matter which you choose). The meat was plentiful, but I didn't think Joe's lived up to the hype. After all, we paid for the poriton (each Large order was $40), but I think we expected too much. We both thought it'd be out of this world. It was just another good restaurant. The restaurant itself, and the staff, were very nice. Pros: Prompt service, Free parking lot, Key lime pie crust Cons: Expensive more

Awesome 12/5/2002

Started off at the bar with a couple great apple martinis. We were seated and given wonderful recommendations by our waiter, Bobby. We had the seafood platter appetizer and continued on to the large crab claws with creamed spinach. I finished off the meal with a slice of the best Key Lime pie I've ever had. We also had our 2 year old daughter with us and she was treated like a queen. We enjoyed our meal so much that we are going to order for New Years Eve and have it Fed Exed to Indiana. more

wait was worth it 11/18/2002

we waited 2 1/2 hours, but the stone crab was phenominal. go early, like 5 pm or 11 pm on weekends. more

Go early, go late or WAIT! 11/3/2002

If you arrive during peak dining hours, be prepared to wait upwards of 90 minutes. Once seated, service was average, with a feeling that you're being rushed so that your table can be turned over to the next waiting party to ring up more profit. Food ranged from good stone crabs to tough, over-cooked conch fritters, average overall. Would be nice if the entrees were served with side dishes or salad instead of having to order everything ""a la carte"". If you're looking for value or ambiance, there are much better choices beachside. Cons: Very loud, A la carte prices, Long wait more
