Best tailor ever! 2/8/2008

Jacks is run by Jack quite naturally. What's impressive is that Jack does everything himself. I've found it quite important that the person doing the altering also do the measurements. The approach a lot of bigger places take in separating these tasks sacrifices a lot of quality, in contrast, Jack is all about quality. I'm a law student in the area and have interviews coming up. My old suits are well, old and that wouldn't do so I bought a new one. I liked the price, style and material of the new suit, but the cut wasn't quite right and the usual stuff like arm and leg length wasn't quite right either. I took it to jack and he worked his magic and the suit now fits perfectly and looks like one 10x its price. Jack is very friendly and nice to work with and also extremely talented and does really high quality work. For example, little things like when he shorted the sleeves, he moved the buttons and adjusted the slit rather than just eliminating the button on the end and going with a shorter slit. Its got to be way more work the way he does it, but the suit looks better and looks like it was designed specifically for me, not like a generic suit with the arms chopped a bit shorter. \r \r All this to say, Jacks is THE place to go in Cambridge (perhaps the world), it just doesn't get any better than this!\r more

Great service, great craftsmanship 11/19/2007

I had three dress pants that needed to be significantly be taken in - in the order of 5-6 sizes. When I brought them to Jack, he was very straightforward about how hard it would be, how much it would cost, and whether he thought he could do the job or not (he could, of course). When I went to pick them up and tried them on, what once just dropped right to the ground were now fashionably fitting dress pants. Jack is very talented, straightforward, and personable - if you need anything more than an ordinary job done, definitely try Jack. more

My favorite! 10/9/2007

Of all the tailors I have used in my life, Jack is the best. He even remembers you by first name! He is a great listener and can often give recommendations based on his vast experience. I had a zipper replaced on a jacket and a pair of pants hemmed, and I'm very happy with the results. This is because Jack does all the sewing and mending and alterations HIMSELF!!! He doesn't have people working in the back for him, like most places. The last pants I needed altered he was able to do in 24 hours! \r My relative also had a great experience with him - after having a terribile experience with a place on Newbury Street in Boston and a small cleaner/alterer in Inman Sq in Cambridge, she went to Jack and has never looked back. He has done a number of pants for her as well as a very expensive designer coat. Always flawless. Visiting Jack is like visiting an old friend because he is friendly and looks you in the eye, and he is right in Porter Square so it isn't a hike to get to him if you are carless. Pros: Does the work himself, Close to Porter T stop, like visiting an old friend! more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! 8/26/2007

AVOID GUYS!! Save the effort and money. I took my DKNY trousers for alteration. I was charged a total of $51 = $18 (for pulling in the waist) + $18 (for pulling the seat in) + $15 (for hemming the pants). I know this is expensive, but I thought I was paying for the best (felt justified after looking at some of the reviews here).\r \r I go back and the waist didnot fit. I explained this to Jack. Instead of trying to redo the pants; he starts justifying and says the pants fit me just fine. I try explaining to hin that the waist is still 2 inches too loose and that the pants will fall off without a belt. Jack start suggesting that I should use a belt and that will fix it.\r \r I paid $51 and have to get the pants reworked else where. Horrible service, just take your dresses to your dry cleaners..I am sure they are cheaper 'n do a much better job.\r \r \r \r Cons: Horrible service, very expensive, bad job more

Want it fast and cheap...go someplace else. What is done right...go to Jack!!! 8/15/2007

Every man needs a good tailor and Jack is THE BEST tailor in Boston, bar none. He can take an average suit and make it look great, and if you give him something a bit better ? he can make it look like you flew to Hong Kong for a custom fitting. From the moment you walk in the door, you know you are in the presence of a truly genuine and honest person. Jack is a gentleman and a master craftsman. He sees thing no other tailor in Boston can see, and will make you look like a million dollars. I recently bought a nice Italian sport coat, that was really nice ? but a bit loose here and saggy there. I took it to Jack for his deft touch, and he took in the sides, fixed the collar, brought up the sleeves, and made a few other minor adjustments. I came out with a jacket that fits me perfectly, and makes me feel like a million dollars. He does the same for suits, pants, jeans and anything else that needs work. Instead of spending $1200 on a suit at Armani, spend $500 in Filenes Basement and spend another $100 with Jack. You will come out with a look that is 50% less expensive, and 1000% better looking. If you want weekend service or a quick hem?just go to Zoots or some other clowns in the area. But if you really care about your clothes, and want to look great and feel great. Go see Jack. End of story. Pros: Every Man (and woman) needs a good tailor. Jack is THE BEST in Boston. Hands Down. Cons: None at all. more

Best Tailor around 7/7/2007

A few months ago, I brought some high end jeans to Jack to have them shortened with the hem reattached. I was extremely happy with the results. I recently brought two new suits, two dress shirts and a topcoat to Jack for tailoring. One suit is a Luciano Barbera and the other is a Gianluca Isaia, both are three button jacket with flat front pants. Jack did an amazing job tailoring the suits. He took in the sides of the jackets, brought up the sleeves, took in the waist of the pants and hemmed both pairs of pants. I came back for the fitting and I could not be happier with the results. Jack did such a perfect job with both suits, they fit so well that they look like they are bespoke. Jack also did a great job and taking up the sleeves on my shirts and tailoring the topcoat as well. At the fitting, Jack went over every detail with me to show what work had been done on my clothing. The results were perfect. I believe it took approximately two to three weeks which is not long at all for the work that was done. If you want a one hour tailor, there are plenty around but if you want perfect results, go to Jack's. Jack is also very friendly and wants his customers leaving happy with the results. You can feel comfortable leaving anything from jeans to high end suits with Jack. I will definitely return with any other tailoring needs that I have in the future. Pros: Customer Service, Quality of Work more

Best tailor hands down 5/1/2007

Jack is the best tailor hands down. He takes the time to get to know the customer and tries his best to explain to you why something looks good or looks terrible on you. This is very important. In the world of suit sales, you have a lot of sneaky salesmen out there. It is good to know that someone line Jack is honest and will tell it like it is so you can return merchandise if it does not look right on you.\r \r In terms of his skills, Jack is truly a professional. Last year I had a pair of Diesel jeans tailored by the master himself. Jack did a complicated process which i call jean reconstruction therapy. The jeans were good around the waist but did were too long. In order to maintain the design and integrity of the hem on the bottom, Jack trimmed off the portion of the jean that was too long and then reattached the original hems back to the bottom of the jean. The job takes dedication and the job looked as if the jean was cut perfectly for my height despite being tailored.\r \r Another example of Jacks skills came to play when he did some work on a dress shirt of mine. The arm length was too long and Jack once again trimmed off the unnecessary materials and reattached the cuffs to the shirt while moving the buttons up to their proper place. If you look at a poorly tailored dress shirt, the buttons on the dress shirt will look too close together as if someone has butchered the sleeves. This is not so with the job Jack has done. He has this special stitching he does on the sleeves that moves the entire button into the proper place thus doing a perfect job.\r \r Lastly, Jack has done work on a suit I purchased. Though the suit did not cost a whole lot, Jack made it look like it was a $900 suit. He shortened the arms and the length and brought in the sides to fit my slim body. Truly a master craftsman and a surgeon for your clothing, Jack will make you look good and feel good when out and about in the real world. Thanks Jack, cheers to you! Pros: The best Cons: You have to pay for the best. Nothings free in life except death and taxes. more

Don't need to go to Newbury! 4/12/2007

Having just moved to the area I did a lot of research and decided to go to Jack's. I had two nice pairs of pants that needed to be hemmed, including one pair of designer jeans that needed the original hem reattached. Jack shook my hand when I walked in and was very patient when I tried things on and helped me get the length just right to work with heels and flats. The results were very good and the work on the jeans is really impressive. It's a great tailor if you're in the area! Pros: Location, service, experience Cons: Maybe a little expensive, but not compared to Newbury more

Excellent Service 4/7/2007

I had to get my bridesmaids dress altered, and when I saw his positive reviews on Citysearch, I decided to check it out. The location is very accessible, with parking at the Porter Exchange and public transportation, such as the T, commuter rail and buses. \r \r Jack is a friendly tailor, always greeting customers by their name, and very professional. He took in the dress, removed some trim that was fastened in the lining, and had it ready the next weekend. He gave me some good tips on steaming and from what I gather charged a fairly standard rate--$85 for taking it in, shortening the hem, and removing the ribbon. At first it seemed expensive, but after talking with friends I realized that their tailors would charge about the same.\r \r The only down side is that Jack doesn't accept credit cards. So go there ready with cash. There are ATMs in the area, so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience to go back with money.\r \r \r \r Pros: Parking, Customer Service, Quality of Tailoring Cons: Need to pay with cash more

Great Jacket Alteration! 1/26/2007

First off, Jack is a very friendly guy and is all about business. I asked him for the unusual request of adding a drawstring to the waist of a jacket that did not have one. A few days later, I return to the store to find exactly what I wanted. It seems there is no task hard enough for Jack to find a way to achieve it. Great customer service, highly recommended. more

Thrives on challenging jobs 1/4/2007

We brought two challenging jobs to Jack and he did splendidly on both -- and we had fun interacting with him. I had an old leather motorcycle jacket that needed a very complicated zipper replacement. Not only did he do a great job VERY quickly, but he put in an ""antiqued"" zipper that looked fabulous with the jacket and was a huge improvement on the one he was replacing. My husband had a vintage winter coat with a very worn velvet collar and some staining. The coat looks so fabulous after Jack's ministrations that my husband is constantly getting compliments on it! Jack's sensibility is to be relied upon -- and he is honest with you. If he feels a job cannot be well done, he will be upfront about it. I recommend him highly. We take our drycleaning there now, as well. more

Bridesmaid Tailoring 12/28/2006

Jack did a fabulous job tailoring my two bridesmaid dresses, and delivered in my very limited time constraints. One of the dresses needed ""special"" tailoring because when I tried it on, lets just say it clung to all the wrong places! Jack took it in where it needed it and also took it OUT around the hips and it fit perfectly come the day of the wedding. Jack is friendly and gives an honest opinion on your clothing's fit, I highly recommend chosing him to tailor your clothes. Pros: Fast Turnaround, Friendly Service, Honest Opinion Cons: A Little Pricy more

It's nice to know your tailor's name... 12/21/2006

And it's nice to have a tailor to begin with. Jack hemmed my pants in just a day -- and I brought them only days before Christmas. I got the feeling that if I had needed him to hem them while I waited he would have done that too. I haven't used the dry cleaning services yet but now I know where to go. Pros: excellent customer service, fast, very friendly, convenient location in porter square Cons: price maybe? I don't often have my clothes altered so I don't know. I suspect $15 for hemming pants is a bit much, though... more

Great job on shirts 11/27/2006

I have purchaced a couple of nice designer's shirts online. The shirts fit me fine, except for the sleeves that needed to be altered. \r I brought them to Jack's, being not sure if they could do the shirts. However, he took them, and did terrific alterations, right on schedule, and now they fit me very nicely. \r \r If you have any designer's shirts which sleeves need to be altered, Jack's is the place to go! Highly recommended! more

Great workmanship, Great person 11/12/2006

Jack has done my tailoring for over 3 years, from simple hems to full suit alterations. He does top notch work and is an exceptionally nice person. Highly recommended!! more

quick easy, and kind 11/6/2006

I just went there for the first time to see if he could alter my jeans in the waist for me. He explained to me what i should have done and quickly added a clip so i could tighten them myself instead of having them cut and resewn. Simple procedure but he did it infront of me while the other place i went told me it would be a week and $25 to cut and sew. Very nice man! more

Excellent service 11/2/2006

I have used Jack numerous times to alter pants, jackets, coats, and have found all of his work to be meticulous - no problems over time with hems, etc. coming out. I would recommend Jack to anyone who wants tailoring done properly, friendly service, and reasonable costs. Pros: EXCELLENT SERVICE IN A TIMELY MANNER more

Very Helpful 10/26/2006

I had just bought a suite for my grandfathers funeral for the next day and needed an emergency hem job. Jack took it and did an amazing job in only a couple hours where everywhere else required days. more
