Editorial review from Citysearch 2/16/2013

Went in with standard suit, came out very satisfied with a great tailored suit. Not to mention that Jack is a great person to talk to. more

Not my cup of tea 7/27/2010

I went to Jack's once to get my jeans refitted, and a blouse taken in at the sides. He took one look at me and asked what I wanted to do with the clothes. He then quoted me $100 to have the sides of the blouse taken in and $80 to have my jeans patched up. I said no thanks and I walked right out. Does he think I'm an idiot?! Who in their right mind would pay these prices? What a joke. Pros: Tailoring Cons: Rip-off! more

Highly, highly recommended! 11/6/2009

I decided to go to Jack's after reading all those reviews. I went there today with 3 high-end suits (oxxford) that needed to be tailored (my brother gave them to me). Jack spent 30 minutes talking with me and taking the measures. Although he could charge me $140 per suit for tailoring (and they needed to be completely tailored) he said that the suits' cut don't fit me and that he would discourage me from doing it. I was willing to pay for it though. It is very hard to find somebody so honest today. He is not a sales person, he as a truly honest tailor, who doesn't want to advantage of his customers. Obviously, I cannot talk about the quality of his work (which I believe is great) but I can praise his honesty. I will buy new suits and bring them to Jack. I'm his customer for a life. Highly recommended! Pros: Highly, highly recommended! more

The best for custom leather cleaning 7/21/2009

Jack is great - charming, professional, genuinely wanting to help. I took a leather jacket with lots of mildew that belonged to my landlord to him. He was honest, said that dry cleaning would not do the job, but that reconditioning would. He was correct, and the jacket now looks like new. I will definitely recommend him for difficult jobs like this one again. Pros: Excellent work, professional demeanor Cons: not cheap, but worth it more

A Message to the reviewer STDNT 7/1/2009

I could not comment fully to your post due to word count limit so I would like to take this opportunity to comment here as I would also like you and future customers to know more about me and my views on this. I am very taken back by this review. I don't know what I did to give this customer such an impression of me and my work. I have never ever sent anyone away with work that did not satisfy them completely. I always try my best to do it right the first time. I admit that I have made human errors in the 25 years I have been doing this, however, I make sure that the customers are pleased with the work even if I need to do it over. And its never charged. I have looked through all my receipts to find out which customer this might be in order to fix the problem but I have found no such receipts to corroborate this review. I am skeptical now at believing it was from one of my customers however, if it is someone that has come to me, I apologize if you felt I did not care about the work I did for you. I stand behind my work because I complete it all myself and it is my hopes that I get future customers and return customers through the recommendations of my happy customers. My customers satisfaction mean very much to me. Thank you --Jack more

Absolutely the BEST tailor in Boston!!! 6/5/2009

I have taken numerous high-end suits and pants (Gucci, Zegna, etc) to Jack's. I started going to him after having SEVERAL bad experiences with Newbury Tailors. Jack always asks your name, shakes your hand, and listens to your requests. He takes precise measurements, is detail oriented, style conscious and very talented. More importantly, he will let you know if an item simply cannot be tailored appropriately. I have observed him treating other customers with non-designer goods in the same professional manner as he always treats me. Pros: Talented, professional, and service oriented! Cons: Pricey, but worth every penny. more

I wouldn't go anywhere else 4/17/2009

After having shoddy work done by tailors where I bought my suits and a couple other drycleaners that do some alterations, I was referred to Jack and now I won't go anywhere else. He knows all of his customers and greets me with a smile and handshake each time I see him. He does great work and completes it very quickly. Jack clearly takes great pride in his work so you know you are going to get excellent results. He is also as honest and ethical as they come. I have had him turn down work on more than one occasion, advising me I would be better off buying a new item than having the alteration done. I can't say enough nice things about him or his work. I highly recommend him. Also, his son is cobbler and Jack takes my shoes to him. Ask about it. I'm sure he'll do the same for you. Pros: Great work; Fast turnaround; Excellent service more

JACK will never give you up, jack will never let you down, JACK IS THE BEST AROUND! 1/23/2009

* Jack was the original choice to play the lead role in the movie, ""Boys Don't Cry"". We sat there for a year and a half ? until sure enough, someone constructs a bar around us. Well, the day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Definately Recommended!!! 10/18/2008

I was looking for a new tailor after having a bad experience with an Everett-based tailor. I found Jack through Citysearch and noticed the extensive positive reviews. I brought in a wool long coat that required major alterations in the body of the coat , in the sleeves, and the lining. The coat also wreaked of mothballs to the degree that I didn't think that the stench would ever come out of the coat. I found Jack to be pleasant and engaging. Upon arrival Jack did a thorough job of taking my measurements. I wasn't sure how my coat would come out. Two weeks later I got my coat and was pleasantly blown away. The coat fit me excellently. The price for the job was reasonable. I am extremely pleased with Jack's work. The mothball smell vanished. The coat looks great! I brought in a pair of boots for his brother to repair the soles and was equally pleased with the price and the quality of the work. I will continue to rely on Jack for my tailoring and dry cleaning needs. In an era where corporate chains predominate, I also am happy to support a local business like Jacks. Thanks Jack! Pros: Quality work from a local business more

Jeans tailoring with original hem reattachment A+++ 10/7/2008

Jack?s talent and attention to detail are rivaled only by his professionalism and integrity. I have been taking my jeans to him for tailoring and original hem reattachment for quite some time now, and have been nothing short of amazed at the results each time. The skill and care that Jack puts into his craft is easily seen in the quality of the work he produces. In addition to the wonderful work that Jack does, he is quick with a handshake and a smile when you enter his shop. Keep up the great work Jack. Pros: excellent work, attention to detail, and friendly face more

Terrible Experience :-( 9/24/2008

I needed to hem my new brand name white jeans. So I googled for the best tailor in the area to make sure the job is done well. Jack got more good reviews than anybody else, so I chose him, but the service I got was not what I expected. \r \r The first time I went there Jack talked very nicely to me, but when we got to how the jeans have to be hemmed, he told me that it would cost me $18 and that he wanted to save me money by not charging me for the more expensive work (i.e. for reattaching the original jeans hem, which was $30) - exactly how other people wrote about Jack in their reviews. I tried to ask him several times if the jeans bottom would be more durable with the original hem, but he did not care to answer my question. Instead he brought several pairs of other jeans and started showing me how nicely he reattached the original hem to them. And then I realized: he did not care to give me some advice or answer my questions or save my money - he only mentioned it as an excuse to advertise his more expensive service! I ordered the usual hemming.\r \r When I came to pick up my jeans during the office hours, Jack was not in and I ended up waiting for him for 30 minutes. Also when he showed up he was not nice anymore: he did not even say ""Hi"" or ""Bye"" to me, and when I asked if I could try the jeans he looked at his watch as if I was going to waist his time.\r \r But this is not it. When I came back home, my girlfriend looked at the work and noticed that the stitch on one of the trouser leg is already broken and about 2 inches of the hem got detached.\r \r So I had to go there the third time next day. And this time Jack was not nice either: again neither ""Hi"" nor ""Bye"" - he just asked me ""What's wrong?"" When I explained to him the problem, he did not redo the whole stitch - he just added an additional 2 inch stitch over the broken piece. So I can still see the broken threads sticking out. I do not know how long his ""work"" is going to last...\r \r I am not going there again!!! Cons: terrible work quality more

Not up to the job 7/24/2008

Brought in a blazer to have the collar shortened. The work was not symmetrical, causing slight bulges in the jacket when I put it on, and the stitching was very coarse. In the end, I had to take the jacket to the tailor at J Press in Cambridge, who was surprised at the poor quality of the work. Jack's might be ok for simple things like sleeve length etc, but take more complicated jobs elsewhere. Pros: Location; friendly in that low key gruff way that many tailors have Cons: inadequate work quality more

Fast, friendly, and detailed. 5/8/2008

This is the only tailor I use. \r He always has my items done in less time than he estimates. He is so fast.\r All the work he does is detailed and beautiful.\r He is honest!! (I had a bridesmaid dress that was too big on me but really ugly. He suggested we do as little tailoring as possible - even though that is less money for him - because he said ""You are never going to wear this again!"")\r He is so friendly - he remembers everyone's names and greets you personally as you walk in.\r I can't imagine getting better service any where else.\r \r more

Best tailor in Cambridge. 4/25/2008

Jack is the best tailor in Cambridge! He's pricey, but he made my suits look amazing. I totally recommend him. more

Can't be beat! 4/15/2008

I have to say, Jack is AMAZING! I took 10 items there on a Saturday and it was done by Wednesday!!!! I didn't even ask for it to be rushed. He said two weeks to be on the safe side, but WOW!!! And when I was there, he was SO nice. He's really personable, and honest. I asked him a couple of times whether he recommended I have something done and he flat out said it wouldn't be worth the money. Clearly not trying to drum up business for himself. \r \r Pros: \r 1. fast\r 2. so nice\r 3. honest\r 4. quality work\r 5. really great guy that you just want to give as much business as possible\r 6. doesn't outsource the tailoring; does it himself. i went first to a cleaner's who said they'd measure it and send it away for tailoring. i don't see how that can possibly end in anything but disaster if the person who sees the clothes on you is not the one tailoring them. \r \r Cons:\r 1. not a bargain basement price ($250 for everything)\r 2. a little bit far for students who don't have a car in Cambridge (he's right next to Porter square) but it's a totally walkable distance. more

excellent tailoring service 4/12/2008

Jack is an excellent tailor. There is much more to the experience of taking clothing to Jack than his high skill. He takes a pride in his work and his relationship with each customer that is rare in the buisness world today. I brought a sports coat to Jack that was too short in the sleeves. He explained that if he were to lengthen the sleeves the previous cuff of the jacket would be visible in the extended version in the form of an unseemly black line. He did not have to tell me that. He could have taken my money and when he returned the lengthened version I would have been dissapointed by that unsightly line. I decided not to lengthen that sports coat and also decided that I would only go to Jack for all my future tailoring needs. more

Simply Awesome 4/4/2008

I'm a student at Harvard Business School and I needed an update to my wardrobe to get ready for my summer internship. I took four pairs of pants to Jack's to get the pants hemmed and the waist taken in. A week later (pretty good turn-around), I went in to pick them up and Jack suggested I try the pants on. He knew he had done a great job, but he wanted to make sure I was happy. I tried them on, and three out of four were absolutely perfect. The fourth pair was a bit too long, but without any questions asked, Jack re-hemmed them for me on the spot, saving me from a second trip to Porter Square. \r \r I've been to several tailors, and this has been my most positive experience by far. Jack is a very sincere, kind person who has been in business for twenty years. He does all of his own tailoring and does a fantastic job. And while he takes a lot of pride in his work, he is completely willing to redo any tailoring that doesn?t fit your spec. The 73 positive reviews on this website are a testament to his excellence. I couldn't recommend him more strongly.\r \r Pros: fast service, high quality, willing to do re-work without questions asked, proximity to Porter Square T-stop Cons: cash only more

Amazing work 3/5/2008

I have been to Jack's twice now in the past 6 months and both experiences have been amazing. For the first time, a had a pair of jean's almost completely ""rebuilt"", turning them from a baggy mess into my now favorite pair. All hems and taking-ins have been top-notch and of the highest quality. Also, it is very reassuring that he seems committed to learning, or at least attempting, to learn the names of his customers. All in all, his tailoring is definitely worth the price! Pros: great customer service, fast, friendly, high quality work, easily accesable Cons: nada more

Excellent quality and attention to detail 2/26/2008

I recently brought a suit into Jack to have tailored and after getting it back, I am astonished by the results. Jack's expert skills made it fit extremely well and I can now wear it with a great deal of pride.\r \r I have very little experience in having tailoring done on any of my clothing so this was a first for me. Let me just say that I'm pleased that Jack was so welcoming about the whole process of what would be involved. He took the time to offer careful remarks on how the suit's fit could be improved and noticing the finer details I wouldn't have seen.\r \r By the time we were through there were 4 different things in the suit that were going to be modified - basically a full overhaul. Jack even was able to give me an estimation of what the suit would look like on me when all was said and done - a great help so I'd know what to expect.\r \r He was even accommodating to my schedule and had the suit done in a week's time. When I came to pick it up, Jack had me try it on and made note of the areas that had been changed and took the time to recheck for proper fit. This man definitely takes a great deal of pride in his work.\r \r It's true that his services are not cheap but in terms of quality, professionalism, and service - this guy's a bargain. As many other reviewers note, you definitely get what you pay for with Jack. His services are one-on-one and he performs all the work himself, something not commonly seen in laundromats or large chain tailors. The turn-around time was excellent as well. I will definitely be making the trek out to Cambridge to visit Jack whenever I have anything that needs tailoring in the future. His location is great too, very accessible to both the T's Red Line and Commuter Rail at Porter Sq. and there is also ample parking in nearby lots for those traveling by car. If you have any tailoring that needs to be done, I personally can't recommend Jack more highly. Pros: Easily accessible, Wonderful service, Well skilled, Takes a lot of pride in his work Cons: none. more

Completely Overpriced 2/23/2008

$18 to do a simple hem on a pair of pants! Out of control. I should have done it myself. Maybe he is worth it for upscale alterations but something that simple? I dropped the pants off and asked how much they would be on the way out the door. I'm a mother on a tight budget. I kicked myself all the way home for leaving 2 pairs of pants there. I decided I would go back the next day and get them back since he also said it would take a week to hem the pants. I went back the next day and they were already done. He did a nice job. But so has every other place I've ever taken pants to be hemmed and I've never paid over $12. He only took cash so I had to go get cash and then i thought it was very tacky that when I paid he pulled out a big roll of money from his pocket to give me my 2 bucks instead of ringing it up on the register or anything like that. Just kinda rubbed in what a killing he must be making ripping off poor suckers like myself. Pros: nice job Cons: overpriced more
