Wonderful! 12/13/2002

The best steak I've ever had! Wonderful ambience and service. A tad pricey, but so worth it every once in a while! Pros: steak, ambience, service more

Now you're talking steak 12/12/2002

If you're looking for the best steak in Seattle you've come to the right place. After trying Morton's, Ruth Chris', & the Met, El Gaucho wins hands down when it comes to food quality. The ambience isn't really to my liking but I've been able to see past that because the food was so much better. Pros: Best Food, More parking, Tre Chic Cons: A little noisy, A little too dark, Tre Chic more

Dining with an attitude. 12/10/2002

El Gaucho is a restaurant that goes above and beyond great food. The atmosphere, service and all around feel are something everyone should experience. As soon as you walk through the door you are immediately drenched in luxurious and rich culture that only happens inside the walls of El Gaucho. You are treated like royalty from the moment you arrive! If you are looking for a flavorful meal, with all the trimmings El Gaucho is the place to be. Pros: ambience, location, service more

Seattle's Best 12/7/2002

By far the best steakhouse in Seattle. The service varies from mediocre to great, but the food is usually so good as to make up for it. Start with the wicked shrimp and end with Bananas Foster. Everything in between will be excellent as well. more

Best steak you will ever have 12/4/2002

El Gaucho is the most underrated steakhouse in the country. Daniels, The Met, Mortens, Ruth's Chris, etc., are a far cry from the quality I get when I go to El Gaucho. Trust me - if you like your steak rare, then you know what a quality steak is. Everyone else can stick with the Met (c: Pros: Incredible steak Cons: Kinda pricey more

Exceptional Cuisine 11/26/2002

My husband and I have dined in most of the steakhouses in Seattle and this is our favorite. The chateau-briand is indescribable. It is beyond a doubt the steak that we crave and they prepare it properly at El Gaucho. We order it medium-rare, as it should be and then we leave it to El Gaucho's skilled staff to take care of it. It comes to the table where they cover it in juices, rubs and spices. Once you cut your first tender morsel and place it in your mouth, you know that this is what steak should be. The wicked shrimp appetizer is spicy and exceedingly tasteful. The tableside caesar salad for two is delectable, as is the bananas foster dessert also done tableside. El Gaucho excels in tableside presentation, but they are just the sideshow, surpassed by the succulence of their exceptional cuisine. Pros: Dark Dining Room, Unsurpassed Staff, Hard working grillers Cons: Expensive more

WOW 11/7/2002

If your looking for great steaks, great service, fantastic wines, a sexy and macho atmosphere this is the place to go, Hands downs the best Steak house in Seattle and maybe even the best restuarant in seattle...5 star more

Burned bread 11/6/2002

We went to El Gaucho for Father's DAy and I was not impressed. First the waiter hovered over us like he was trying to push us along to leave. The bread arrived at our table burned. The steaks I had heard so much about were mediocre. We won't be returning. This restraurant is very overrated. more

Swanky and outstanding dining experience 10/31/2002

I've now tried all 3 big Seattle steak houses, Daniel's, the Met, and El Gaucho. El Gaucho beats the Met any day of the week, and exceeds Daniels by its superlative service and presentation. My Seattle dinner club tried El Gaucho last week, all agreed it was the best Seattle dining we've had bar none. The chateaubriand was outstanding, tableside bananas foster to die for, but the service sets them above all others. Only minor notes: Caesar too salty, dining room SO dark, wine by the glass selection limited Pros: Stellar service, Superb food, What a presentation! Cons: red wine by glass sel more

El Perfecto 10/29/2002

Have been here about 5 times and never a diasappointment. The steaks are flavorful and good-sized (unlike The Met) seafood is wonderful (try the salmon), and delicious Caesars are prepared tableside. The wine steward is a genius and always helps us find an excellant choice. Atmoshpere is romantic; the bar and cigar room are always classy. After dinner, we usually head downstairs to the Pampas Room for cocktails and live jazz. Valet parking is complimentary (again, unlike The Met). The servers are also very knowledgable and attentive. Needless to say, this is my favorite restaurant! Pros: food quality/portions, ambiance, waitstaff more

Consistent Quality 10/25/2002

I have been a customer of the El Gaucho since 1970. The quality of the food has remained constant and the quality of the staff unsurpassed in that entire time. more

hmmmm....this is it! 10/25/2002

When I first walked into the place, after hearing that it was 'so in', I was underwhelmed. It's dark, plain surroundings were anything but classy. The dining area lacked 'any' style and the food was ok. If I were going to go out for a special dinner....this would be the last place I would pick. The downstairs bar which had 'live' music was fine, that is if you wanted to feel like you were in some old cramped, plain local bar...but maybe thatswhat they're going for (again no style). It's been about a year since I've been there and unless it's changed drastically, I could think of dozens of places to go instead. Cons: No style more

great steaks and ambience 10/14/2002

I enjoyed my recent dinner at El Gaucho and was impressed by the scenery and the food. This was a great place to come when you feel like getting out of the normal seattle restaurant scene. Pros: Entertaining Staff, Great Food, Different Atmosphere Cons: Expensive more

Swank Steak House 9/28/2002

I've eaten here several times, and love it. Service is exemplary, the food--well, the steaks were some of the most tender, well prepared I have ever dined on--and the after-dinner accompaniments were so plentiful, it was silly! Highly recommended, both for food and ambiance--hell, even the service is great to boot. It is in the same price range as other steak houses like the Met and Ruth's Chris, but in my mind, much better. more

wonderful times at El Gaucho 9/23/2002

I've been to El Gaucho three times, and each was excellent. My first time was for dinner, and the service, food, and ambiance were well up to the standard that I had set for a place if its calliber. The other two times were for after dinner drinks- one time being my birthday. The place was virtually empty, but regardless, the piano player played "Happy Birthday" and we had a great time! I hope to return soon to El Gaucho! more

nouveaux riches wanted 9/17/2002

I could not have been more disappointed with this restaurant. I'm no stranger to paying for quality, but this restaurant DOES NOT deliver quality. It's a place for people to impress each other (oo, my bank account is bigger than yours!), not for a good meal, a romantic meal, or a remotely satisfying experience. The wait staff was pretentious, the food was mediocre at best (one standout: excellent salmon), the atmosphere left EVERYTHING to be desired. I was so embarrassed when I sat down and looked at the prices that I wanted to leave there and then. The absolute worst were the wine prices -- I had to laugh out loud when I looked at them. Really, for GOOD STEAK, go to the Metropolitan Grill. To waste money in a dark, ugly 1950's-style Vegas supper club, go to El Gaucho. Hopefully your waiter won't condescend to you. Good luck. Pros: cute waiter, clean bathroom, best salmon ever Cons: pretentious waiter, awful layout, OVERPRICED more

A wonderful night 9/9/2002

From the moment we walked in the door I doubt I've ever had better service, we were early so we waited briefly in the louge, which makes outstanding drinks, and then were seated early. Everyone from the hostest to bartender and the waiter was amazing. And the steak, wow, I'd recommend the Filet Mingon, it literally melts in your mouth, and I'd also suggest the baked potato. I know it's just a potato, but you'll see. Also the table side cesear salad is wonderful to see and taste. Pros: Cesear Salad, STEAK!!!, piano player more

Stunningly delicious 8/25/2002

One airline magazine called El Gaucho "the best steakhouse in the Northwest, and possibly in the United States" -- and I couldn't agree more. Pros: Attentive service, Delicious food Cons: Expensive, HUGE portions more

Derik Jeter! 8/23/2002

Ok, Not only did I LOVE the steak (I'm a small town farm girl from Kansas... I know my STEAK) I got to sit next to the EVER SO SEXY Derick Jeter.... I tell you hOt hot hot! more

  • In Short
Don't be fooled by the high school gym-like foyer--"swanky" best describes the 1950s supper-club scene that awaits. Inside, the dining room rises dramatically in three tiers and the lounge, all mirrors and light, glitters appealingly. All steaks are dry-aged Angus; the filet mignon, chateaubriand for two and baseball-cut top sirloin (a nearly round hunk of meat) are fully satisfying. Start with the wicked shrimp and don't skip the Caesar, which is entertainingly tossed tableside.
