Best

If you have some extra money and want to treat you and the wife out. This is the place. Great food great service. The best wine around.

Worst

We went to El Gaucho for Father's DAy and I was not impressed. First the waiter hovered over us like he was trying to push us along to leave. The bread arrived at our tabl...

THE BEST SERVICE IN TOWN. GREAT MENU. NICE SUROUNDINGS. GREAT MEMORY MAKER. more

Fabulous 10/9/2003

10 all the way. Great time everytime. Been to this place at least 20 times and always enjoyable. Friendly staff, great food, great atmosphere. Great band too. Keep up the good work. Pros: band, atmosphere, staff more

No-No Service 7/13/2003

The evening at El Gaucho had all the markings of a fine dining experience -- good wine, delicious food, and romantic ambience. The evening was spoiled by an incredibly snooty, non-service oriented female waitperson who was unprofessionally obvious in making her dissatisfacton known to us and fellow staff members. Fortunately, the captain took over and provided the service worthy of the prices and food quality. In general, the senior wait staff is professional; the younger staff appear spoiled childish with a lot to learn. Pros: Delicious steaks, Wonderful Crab Louie, Superb Wine List Cons: Bratty Service more

Cigars. 7/3/2003

My favorite place for cigar smoking. Food is good too, but preffer Buenos Aires Grill. BAG is not as fancy as El Gaucho but quality wise it is the same, and it is a much better value than EL. EL's cigar lounge is great and I spend there hours enjoying a good cigar, cognac and interesting conversation. more

Simply wonderful 6/23/2003

My boyfriend took me to El Gaucho for my 20th birthday and it was just perfect. The staff treated us not as two kids out playing dress-up but like the paying customers we were. Dinner was delicious and the atmosphere was fun, romantic, and classy. Just what we were looking for. The staff of El Gaucho made my 20th birthday the best ever. Pros: atmosphere, flaming game hen, excellant service Cons: somewhat loud, dark more

Horrible 5/16/2003

By far one of the worst places to go. The wait was extra long with lots of attitude from staff. The decor is "Costco" motif. The food is the worst part; over priced, served poorly, with lots of attitude (no tip for him), and portions are seriously lacking for the price once again. No sides or nothing with an order of your steak. Nothing. Nothing at all. Matter of fact I will make sure to tell all my friends. Cons: bad food, over priced, no service more

Exquisite, Elegant, Perfect, & Romantic 2/24/2003

Exquisite, Elegant, Perfect, & Romantic is how I would describe El Gaucho Restaurant. We ordered the chateaubriand med-rare and that is exactly what we got...a perfect med-rare. The asparagus were perfectly crisp. The ceasar salad was perfect as it was made right at the table. The waiter explained everything he was about to do so you had the opportunity to say what you didn't want such as no chedder on the potatoes. They suggested a perfect bottle of wine to go w/the meal...Syrah wine which was excellent. Eat dessert first...flambe bananas or strawberriew. Pros: Very Romantic, Very Low Lighting, Great Service Cons: Don't eat the figs!, Very Expensive more

Overpriced/Overrated 2/24/2003

I was happy with the service. But, the menu is definitely nothing special, it doesn't have anything that makes it a "different" place. Given the price it is one of the worst value in town. more

A great dining experience 2/16/2003

If I'm going to spend big bucks for a dinner out, I better get the full package. With El Gaucho my wife and I did. Service was excellent, food...about the best I've had in Washington. Our waiter, a young Mel Gibson made suggestions that were perfect...and not the most expensive (ie, wine). I work hard for my money and I feel we got our moneys worth! I will come back...and hopefully it will live up to our first experience. Pros: The best crabcakes, prompt service, banana foster!! Cons: had to wait for table, pricy...yes more

Excellent service, great food & ambience 2/8/2003

Our waiter was attentive to every last detail (even escorting the women to the rest-room). The food was cooked to perfection. Great live piano jazz in the background. A nice treat for a special occasion. Pros: Excellent service, Great food, Cool room Cons: Pricey more

Elgo 2/4/2003

Food and wine is good but the resturant is too crowded and too dark. That goes for both upstaris and downstairs. Pros: Good steaks, Good wine selection Cons: Porr salads, Ambiance is poor, Crowded more

yuppie pick up bar 1/21/2003

The service at El Gaucho is excellent. In fact, I don't think I've had better service anywhere. However the reality of this place is that it's where the rich and beautiful go to meet. It's a meat market for gold diggers, sports celebs, and attorneys to hook up. If that's what you are into, great. Have fun! Pros: best service Cons: overpriced, loud more

Bad service, mediocre food 1/16/2003

I was told by a server that the owners make up many of the 10 ratings in here. I'm not surprised because even though I am sure that some people have a good time at El Gaucho, THAT many people cannot think it's a great place. The food is overpriced and mediocre at best and the service is terrible. I should have stuck with the Met. Cons: bad atmosphere, terrible service, mediocre food more

bad meat and overrated style 1/13/2003

I had the worst fillet I have ever had here. It was full of gristle and had little taste. The lobster was also old, tough and had no taste. I spent 275 bucks and when we complained we were given back 75 and told to come back and try them again. Another time my friend went there to save us a place at the cigar bar and was told we had to buy their cigars or pay a $5 fee to smoke our own. Very bad. We typically spend $100 for drinks when we do cigars. We'll never go back and neither will 100 of our closest friends. Pros: good location, good location, good location Cons: snobby help, bad food, too expensive more

glittsy 1/13/2003

A special occasion restaurant, with good service, ambience and great food. Cons: expensive more

El Gaucho, top of the steak 1/13/2003

Great food, Great service and an atmosphere that cant be beat. Like any good restaurant you may have a short wait at the bar, but having a live piano bar to wait in is hardly an inconvenience. more

Overrated!! 1/13/2003

This restaurant is overrated!! The food was expensive and marginal, at best. The servers were entertaining (we saw a server roasting meat table-side), though. Cons: too dark!, expensive, marginal food more

One Hour Wait Even With Reservation 12/28/2002

Given the uninspired menu, one would expect that El Gaucho is selling service. Wrong. After making a reservation weeks in advance, we were nevertheless forced to wait a full hour in the bar for our table. The wait staff are moderately attentive. Your money is better spent elsewhere. more

Steak house AND a smoking room!!! 12/19/2002

This has to be not just the best steak I've had... but the staff is great. Excellent smoking room with some pretty good cigars. A+ in all areas. I make it a point to go here everytime I'm in Seattle. It's pricey... but great. more

Best in Seattle 12/19/2002

the food and service was outstanding, the steak I had was cooked to perfection Pros: great serive Cons: parking, expemsive more

  • In Short
Don't be fooled by the high school gym-like foyer--"swanky" best describes the 1950s supper-club scene that awaits. Inside, the dining room rises dramatically in three tiers and the lounge, all mirrors and light, glitters appealingly. All steaks are dry-aged Angus; the filet mignon, chateaubriand for two and baseball-cut top sirloin (a nearly round hunk of meat) are fully satisfying. Start with the wicked shrimp and don't skip the Caesar, which is entertainingly tossed tableside.
