Best

My favorite place to eat period! I'm there 2x per week and love it! Get anything on the menu and you'll be happy!

Worst

No bad, but far from the best BBQ in Los Angeles. I can't understand why such a high rating. The Bear Pit up the street is vastly better.

very good 6/7/2007

Just like the reviews for many other ethnic, or regional, restaurants -- the scores are very low from the transplants. I have no respect for any transplant who chooses to live in Los Angeles, yet complain about our food. There is no city in the country that can match the quality of so many specialty foods than Los Angeles. New York may be close.\r \r That is why so many of these reviews should be ignored. I have live in Texas and this place can compete with their BBQ. Also, their is great atmosphere to the shack of a restaurant.\r \r For the people who do not like this place, go back to Tony Roma's where you belong. That way, I will not have to wait so long for a table. Pros: great BBQ Cons: the long drive from the SGV more

Visit the motherland and get a re-fresher course on Texas BBQ 3/1/2007

It would have been wonderful to find a lil place of heaven to remind you of home out here in La La Land - but this is not the place. Perhaps this establishment was started to give the locals here an idea of bbq'd meat just as famous as St. Louis and Memphis? Whatever the reason the owner or whomever is the ""Texan"" associated with this establishment - he/she/it might want to take a long visit back home and practice! I have never had brisket so tough; by the time you try the 3rd or 4th slice it starts to get more tender, but not by much. I was also surprised how far one can take sugar - apparently it's used here quite a bit mask the lack of taste in everything from the cole slaw to their sauce. Our waitress assured us that the only item not made in-house was the potato salad - well, I don't know where they make that purchase, but that was the only item worth eating! Perhaps that outside source could provide a decent menu @ $20 a plate while the ""Texan"" is getting some schooling back home! Pros: Dive ambience Cons: Food, disappearing waitresses once you are served, price more

Dr. Wogly: Quack 2/18/2007

I can't believe I drove for even fifteen minutes to try this place. The place has table service, and the lifers there are courteous enough, but just. Seat yourself whereever, I guess. Most menu items are over fifteen dollars, with a handful of sandwiches for $7 and change. The texas hot link sandwich was lacking in heat of both the temperature and spice varieties, though, ironically, it did give me indigestion. The spicy barbecue sauce and wet naps likewise failed to live up to their names, being sweet and dry, respectively. I think the waitress forgot momentarially about the fries, judging from the flicker of surprise on her face when I asked about them after she said ""have a nice meal,"" so she didn't drop by again until it looked like we were finished. Mention cold food, and she'll just give you more of it to make up for the dissapointment. Quantity trumps quality here, and only barely. And oh yeah, the booths are so narrow that footsie is inevitable, and don't try to balance yorself with a hand on the table when you squeeze in; the tables aren't bolted down. Almost launched a saltshaker across the room with that one. Pros: Sharp toothpicks, dry napkins, cold water. Cons: everything else more

Best BBQ 11/16/2006

Ok who cares about atmosphere when it comes to getting messy with bbq. They have the best beef brisket and the portion for the price is crazy. Everything else is good but the brisket is to die for. Service is so so but with food that good who cares. Hole in the wall atmosphere but the food is soooo good who cares. Once you go you'll be hooked. Pros: Best Beef Brisket Cons: It's in Van Nuys too far more

Great BBQ, Great Service 9/24/2006

I'm from Texas, and I'm very picky about BBQ. In fact, I usually say that I don't really care for it, because so much of what is passed off as bar-be-que is at best mediocre. However, Dr. shines. It's not big, they don't take reservations, and they won't seat you until the entire party is there. However, we showed up with a party of 13, and were happy with our seating. Although everything is booths and banquettes, they worked to get us as close together as possible, and we still felt like a unified group.\r \r The food? Delicious. Tender, flavorful meat (I had the 3-item combo of brisket, ham, and spare ribs) with your choice of mild or hot sauce on the side. Both are terrific. The baked beans are excellent as well.\r \r The service was attentive and friendly, and they did a great job with our large group.\r \r The prices are totally reasonable for what you get. (Brisket is cheap if you buy it at the supermarket, but so is everything else.) They are not out of line with other BBQ places I've eaten, including Texas. And I wound up with at least three meals worth of food on my plate, so on a per-meal basis it's quite a bargain.\r \r We'll definitely be back. Pros: Excellent BBQ Cons: No reservations more

Best BBQ I've had in Los Angeles 8/21/2006

This is best BBQ joint I've been to in Los Angeles. They have huge portions, the ribs melt off the bone and the brisket is mouth watering good. more

Best BBQ 6/5/2006

I tried this place and it has the best BBQ I've ever tasted. I don't think the competition stacks up. Pros: Food comes fast, Great Food, Good Prices more

Extremely Overrarted 4/15/2006

I'm native Texan and KNOW barbeque. Walked out of here 6 years ago when saw that brisket was $9/ HALF pound. Brisket is an inexpensive meat. 6 years later $13.95 half pound. Love brisket but you could do much better for $28/pound. Brisket was specialty, tried it, with links and pork ribs. Links OK but brisket tough, chewy - not tender like supposed to be. Even worse, asked for sauce on the side but whole platter came swimming in thin sugary mess. Waitress said wasn't sauce but marinade. Made sure they drained for doggie bag - the brown sugary marinade, ruined everything.Portions large but $20.95 for a 3 meat platter should be. Confirmed my initial instinct of WHY I order sauce on side and why I thought it was WAY too expensive for BBQ 6 years ago. I know this is LA but BBQ is supposed to be cheap eats. Pros: Beans, Sauce, Bread Cons: BAD runny marinade, Price, Brisket more

excellent BBQ 4/13/2006

the beans to die ,the hot sauce not hot but very good.the service one of thest i have i do not care if is authentic texas or from wherever the food is so so so good i will go back and recommended ,just be prepared or be very hungry those portions are for heavy weight eaters. Pros: good food, good value, good service Cons: parking lot more

Disappointed 3/16/2006

Lunched here with boyfriend Saturday, March 11. Used Zagat guide to find it. The bbq was good, not great. Enjoyed the hot links and brisket, but spareribs were just ok. His chicken was great. Our waitress was lovely (kind, professional, accommodating), but our server was very rude - a rough looking woman with a perpetual smirk and attitude bordering on disrespect. The food wasn't good enough to put up with that. We did not enjoy the sides. We like traditional pork beans and cole slaw. There was something tangy in the beans, maybe cumin? And raisins in the coleslaw with that same tangy taste. I guess we have high standards in bbq and service so agreed not to go back. Pros: Decent bbq Cons: rude server, bathrooms outside more

As Good As any BBQ anywhere 3/10/2006

BBQ is not Grilled meat, BBQ is completely different and THIS is some of the best BBQ anywhere. I have tried all the items on the menu, Brisket and Hot Links are my favorite. This is a simple formula, IF you are looking for fancy, then it ain't BBQ. You could move this place to west Texas on a roadside 200 miles from anywhere and it would be crowded because it is that good. The atmosphere is Texas Roadside. We drive 185 miles to have dinner here at least every 6-8 weeks. If you like Denny's and Perko's $7.99 steak you will not like this place. Hogley's is #1. Waitress' are great. Price is right. Yumm. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere more

Don't wear a nice shirt 1/5/2006

This place has the best ribs ever. Very much not your ""typical"" style of rib, very unique style and just killer. Huge portions are the norm, even the chicken pieces are massive. Kind of dumpy on the inside but no matter, the food by far makes up for it. The waitresses are rather rough around the edges. Your typical gruff, burley truck stop ""Marge"" types. Who cares though, the food is that good. The only draw back is you gotta go outside around back to wash up and make sure you ask for a coin before you go. Don't forget the floss and parking can be a pain, but the 20+ mile drive I make every now and then is well worth it. Pros: Huge Portions, Killer Food Cons: Dumpy interior, Bathroom location, Butch waiteresses more

BRISKET!!! 1/2/2006

Oh, I love their brisket. And the hot links. Good ribs as well, but the brisket. It's worth the trip. But loose the tragic plastic bags when boxing the food - it's just too much trailer park for me... Pros: brisket, brisket, hot links Cons: plastic bags more

horrible. 11/24/2005

After a previous bad experience we decided to give dr hogly wogly's another chance due to everyone online's praise. Turns out we were right. The prices are high--even by LA standards, the food tasted like it had been in a fridge for months and thank god we took tagamet before our dinner or I'd be writing this review from the emergency room. In short, why waste your time at this overhyped dive when you could be at the other great bbq haunts in LA and actually get what you pay for. Cons: expensive, bad taste, over hyped more

Most over-rated BBQ in LA... ...by far. 11/12/2005

I'm a huge fan of BBQ... Western, Eastern, Texas, you name it. ""Barbecue"" is both a noun and a verb. This place has placards/article posted proclaiming it one of best in the area (and the U.S.). Things mustve gone downhill a lot since then. It's outrageously expensive (even for LA norms); justified neither by portion nor quality. Service is quick, seating non-existent, lighting is 60-watt naked bulb."" I sampled everything on the menu over 12 visits trying hard to find their strong point. Everything (except the beef ribs) was very dry and tougher than youd ever expect from the best. Their sauce (the hallmark of any good barbecue, Texas or otherwise) ranks somewhere below Heinz family-size: so sweet you cant taste anything. The $14.95 pre-cooked ribs you find shrink-wrapped in the supermarket are better. Too bad, theres not much BBQ to be found in LA, and I had high hopes. Pros: service Cons: food quality, price price price, ambiance more

BBQ Masterpiece 10/18/2005

They have the Best BBQ ever. They actually cook the BBQ in a wood pit instead of grilling it. Whenever you go to a BBQ restaurant, check out how they cook the meat. Is it cooked in a barrell?- which is almost the same as grilling at home. Do they grill it like a steak, similar to home as well or do they have a pit. Hogly wogly's has a pit!!! That's why they're the best. Also, did you try their sauce. They have three sauces, the BBQ sauce, the hot bbq sauce and the marinade sauce. Have you seen other bbq restuarants with a marinade. I don't think so. Simply the best Pros: Sauce, Brisket, Beef Ribs Cons: Seating more

Best brisket around 7/20/2005

I love this place. As a former Texan, I love good barbeque and the Dr's beef brisket is some of the best that I've ever tasted. I love the sauce too. The portions are huge so be ready to have some leftovers for the next cople of days. Pros: brisket more

Great Food Though a Bit Expensive 7/10/2005

I grew up in Mt. Pleasant, TX, a speck on the map just north of Tyler. Dr. Hogley Wogley's is defintely authentic bbq. It is not the best I've ever had, but I would rate it in the top three.....and hands down better than anything else I've had in my 5 years in LA. Now, if only the prices were comparable to Texas........ Pros: Food, Parking, Service Cons: A bit Expensive more

Not Texas BBQ 7/4/2005

I originally come from the Tyler, TX area and let me just say this place should change its name immediately. You couldn't find this kind of mediocre BBQ in Tyler, Texas if you tried. The prices are high and the only thing that was reminiscent of real BBQ joints are the baked beans. Like other reviewers I am still trying to find the real thing! more

The best BBQ in the valley 6/13/2005

This is the best BBQ in the Valley the sauce is good the ribs are tender and the smoke flavor hot links are not too hot Pros: the ribs, hot links, the sauce Cons: parking, one restroom outside more
