Best

My favorite place to eat period! I'm there 2x per week and love it! Get anything on the menu and you'll be happy!

Worst

No bad, but far from the best BBQ in Los Angeles. I can't understand why such a high rating. The Bear Pit up the street is vastly better.

Hogly Wogly is my kind of pig. 6/9/2005

The best ribs ever and the baked beans are to die for. Pros: delicious barbecue, priced right, phenomal baked beans Cons: crowded, small parking area more

The Best BBQ in the World! 5/25/2005

The ribs as they come from the kitchen are pretty darn excellent but once you put the hot BBQ sauce that they put on the table on them they transcend excellence. Both the pork spareribs and the beef ribs are tender with some crispy spots that make things interesting...but oh that sauce! It's highly addicting and it ""IS spicy so not for the faint of heart. It leaves you with a nice afterburn in your mouth and a heavenly glow in your tummy. I'm not kidding about the glow...it's what keeps me coming back and it's not close to where I live! I've had BBQ from the top spots (Memphis, Texas, etc.) butthis is by far the best. Brisket, links and sandwiches are good too but you have to have that hot sauce! Pros: hot sauce, good parking, all booths Cons: too far from me, no veggies more

It's all about the pork ribs! 4/11/2005

Forget the beef ribs and chicken, this place is all about the pork spareribs and the brisket. The brisket is amazingly tender and succulent, and the pork ribs are the best ever. Love the beans and slaw, too, but it's all about those ribs and the brisket. The waitresses are great, too! more

Excellent Service 2/28/2005

Visited for the first time just recently. Our server, Carole, was the highlight of the visit with great recommendations and spectacular service. Food-wise, try the brisket--it's great. Pros: brisket, Carole (our server) more

Gets worse every time 1/13/2005

This place constantly is rated #1 in the greater LA area, but I have no idea why. The food average, at best...and rather overpriced.. more

Okay, but not Texan 11/15/2004

Hogly Wogly's food is serviceable, good if you're desperate to satisfy a barbeque jones. I don't think it's quite deserving of its reputation. Dr. Hogly Wogly's hasn't inspired me to end my quest for ""real Texas barbeque"" in the LA area, and I've managed to find much better all-around barbeque closer to home. more

past experience 11/12/2004

I vowed to never go back since I had a extremely rude waitress a few years ago. We were passing by and decided to have some ribs on the spur of the moment and happened to take a can of coke in with us. The waitress got extremely obnoxious and embarassed us in front of other customers about the coke. We got up and walked out! However, after many years, I took some out of town guest there since I knew there food was decent and found the waitress that served us was very delightful and helpful!! Pros: food good, waitress we had was , very good Cons: , portions we got were , somewhat small more

Good food, Very high prices 10/4/2004

I tried the Doc for the first time last night. We got the a pork and beef rib combo. It was about $20. While the portions were huge, I don't believe it's a good valve. Very overpriced. I thought the pork ribs were about average. Nothing great. The bbq sauce was terrible. Too sweet. But I loved beef ribs. Very good smoke flavor and the ribs had so much meat on them. I may go back to try the brisket. Pros: Beef ribs, large portions Cons: , bad bbq sauce more

I wasn't impressed 7/15/2004

I had the beef sandwich since a couple of co-workers and I decided to go their for lunch. We were astonished at the prices first of all. The baked beans were good and they do give you a lot of meat. However, it was rather tasteless. I'd rather have quality than quantity. It was average. I would like to go back and try the chicken and the brisket that people have been recommending. That will have to come at another time though, when I'm able to splurge. I was disappointed at the amount of money I spent on lunch-- a sandwich and a little side dish. Pros: a lot of meat, pleasant waitresses Cons: , kinda bland meat more

Best BBQ in SoCal 6/9/2004

My husband and I recently moved to Van Nuys from Santa Clarita. I previously lived in Ventura County. Hogly Wogly's is the best I have found anywhere! The food is spectacular and the service is good. I recommend eating in rather than take-out because the food is not as good when it isn't served to you piping hot and swimming in juice and sauce. Don't get me wrong, the take-out still beats the competition, but eat-in is the best. I highly recommend the brisket. Pros: Good Value, Delicious!, Good Service Cons: , Can get crowded, Chilly inside more

Great BBQ! 12/22/2003

I went there with a friend from Texas, who was convinced that it was imposible to find good BBQ here in LA. After trying the food here, he completely changed his mind. Even though it's about 45 minutes away, we still go there often. Large portions, a great BBQ sauce, relatively cheap. Plus, you will get leftovers for at least another meal or two ... Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Large portions more

Best ribs and brisket in the U.S. 9/15/2003

1) I am a long-haul over-the-road 18 wheeler truck driver and have been all over the U.S. Trust me: when comparing food alone (i.e., not considering ambience) with the possible exception of Ruth Chris' Steakhouse in Nashville, Tennessee, there is no better food. Most people go to Dr. Hogly Wogly's for the pork ribs, but inasmuch as they allow two entrees, recommend you also get the beef brisket. It too is to die for. 2) There is a place that is a close second, but you""ll have to drive to Kilgore, Texas to try it. It is the Ranch House (just over the county line because Kilgore has a dry county.). [And...if you have gone to this much trouble: to go to Texas for ribs, don't drink Lone Star beer there, instead drink Steiner beer--it is by far the best Texas beer!]. Pros: Pork ribs & brisket Cons: Crowded--but worth it more

Food A Side Dishes C 9/15/2003

The meat is great, but the side dishes need major improvement. Pros: meat, BBQ sauce Cons: bread, macoroni salad, beer selection more

Disappointing 8/25/2003

After hearing a friend and later a celebrity go on and on about this place, I figured what the hell? What IN the hell, was more like it. The meat was dry, chewy and stringy, and the baked beans looked condemnable. After paying the bill, I felt even more ripped off. Maybe it's an L.A. thing akin to embracing a place as cool b/c it doesn't have a sign or is in a shady part of town. I dunno. But I'm from the South, and I think I can say with some credibility that there has GOT to be better BBQ in L.A.! Pros: um, they have beer?, waitresses are nice Cons: dry meat, hot sauce not HOT, overpriced more

Best sit-down BBQ in San Fernando Valley 6/30/2003

Order the center-cut ribs (Leo's also has this). The hand-sliced brisket (do not confuse this cut of meat with the roast beef sandwich) varies in quality, but when it's good it's the best in L.A. Get the triple- combo plate (it will serve three) with brisket, ribs, and chicken. When chicken is ordered, it means half of a chicken, or more correctly, the size of half a small turkey. It is huge and very tasty. Pros: center-cut ribs, hand-sliced brisket, combos Cons: parking, one outside restroom more

Awesome BBQ 6/5/2003

This is serious, delicious BBQ, and the servings are huge. Be sure to try the macaroni salad, it's just about the best we've ever had. The parking lot is small but definitely worth the trouble. It's ""roadhouse"" chic for sure. more

Not what I thought 5/23/2003

After hearing so much about it, we decided to try it one night. Not what we had expected. Not so good and I did not feel the prices were worth what you got. BIG DISAPOINTMENT more

Vastly overrated 4/25/2003

I can not believe that this place constantly makes so many ""Best of LA"" lists. The meat is tough and stringy; average, at best. There is a new place in the west valley called Big Als on Ventura, just east of Topanga that is vastly superior, and cheaper too! I also think the Bear Pit, which is close to Dr.Hogly's is much better, as is Ribs USA in Burbank. more

the very meaning of meaty goodness 4/25/2003

You simply cannot form a legitimate opinion about the best bbq in LA without trying the good doctor. The bad reviews in this list are player-hatin', pure n' simple. Go. Try the beef ribs. Try the brisket. Try the hot links. Try the beans. Take some sauce home. A special, special place. Pros: the food, the food, the food Cons: valley location, no ambiance more

Hogly Yum-o-gly! 3/24/2003

Yum Yum Yum! BYOW - Bring Your Own Washcloth! So its not all about location, although the real estate under the Spearmint Rhino billboard is choice! The food is as good as it gets in the mecca of California Cuisine and valet parking for pick up orders. Beef ribs are muy meaty! Bring your tums! The each plate comes with two sauces, spicy and other. Both are equally good! B/c of the messiness involved i do not suggest bringing your first date here! But it would be a mighty fine second! Pros: big servings, good for kids, reasonalbly priced Cons: parking, small venue more
